Exporting video into a .mov container

I'm liking the idea of trying to use Front Row as a media center, but I'm not expecting Apple to build in any support for subtitle files. Since there is next to no support for subtitle files under QuickTime - kind of ridiculous, if you ask me - I was trying to figure out what I could do.
I downloaded TitleLab, and was playing around with hardsubbing the video files with the subtitles. I've not really used the .mov container much, so I was pretty shocked to learn that I could save a video file out into .mov without having to re-encode it. (Since .mov IS a container, and not a codec, though, I shouldn't have been surprised.)
Here's something I've run into, though. I tried saving a file that had been encoded with DivX (showing Generic MPEG-4 as the codec) as a .mov file. When I play the clip fullscreen, however, the framerate goes to all ****. The original .avi file that I have plays just fine fullscreen under QuickTime Player.
Why is this happening? It is because, now that it is in a .mov container, the DivX codecs I've added to QuickTime are no longer playing it, and QuickTime itself is trying to? If that is the problem, then any suggestions on what other options I have for getting an end result where I can see the subtitles with the video under QuickTime?
iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Just FYI, one reason why QuickTime doesn't support
subtitle files is because it has support for
text tracks IN the movie (as you see with TitleLab.
So, given the option of having a movie with a
built-in text track OR having to have two separate
files, it's not quite that ridiculous.
No, I know that... but that's only for the .mov container, right? Because of that, that isn't a valid excuse, to me. Back when there weren't many video format options, I can understand. But these days, QuickTime should be more supporting of non-Apple stuff, seeing as it is the main means of of OSX playing media. At the least, there should be the means for a third party to build on an added piece of software/code/whatever to allow QuickTime and QuickTime Player to run subtitle files, and if that ability is there, somebody needs to make it.
I downloaded a media player the other day made by one guy. It works mainly off of QuickTime, and it can handle subtitle files wonderfully. Why he can do it, and Apple can't or hasn't, is silly.
on't know of a way that you can have QuickTime
ignore the apple codec and use the DivX one. Does the
file still show Generic MPEG-4 when in the .mov file?
Yup - I'm getting the exact same information from QuickTime for the file originally, and then inside the .mov container.

  • Issue with Exporting video as Quicktime, Self Contained

Hi, I am a new Final Cut Pro user, and a new Mac user really. I am taking a film editing class and we are required to capture and edit HDV footage into essentially a 2-3 minute edited video. So I completed the capture and editing, and my finished product came to about 2:15. My professor is requiring us to turn in the assignment on a flash drive. Problem is, my exported video lags/skips/pauses throughout the entire thing, especially when played on a flash drive. Also, I noticed the file size is abnormally large for a 2 minute video, clocking it at around 2.3 gig. I also noticed that it exports a bunch of source files as well, and the exported video won't play without them. However, I am 100% positive that I exported "as a self contained video." So shouldn't that mean the video should be able to play on its own, no strings attached so to speak?
Something is just fishy about my video when I export it. All I want is a simple quicktime that should play without lag, and play on its own, but instead I get a huge video with all the source files, despite the fact that I checked the "self contained" box. Is there anything that stands out that I might be doing wrong? A particular sequence setting I should change? I'd greatly appreciate it.

    Hi -
The reason that your video is playing back poorly is that a USB flash drive does not have the speed necessary to support playing back your movie. I am confident that the flash drive is just a way of delivering the file to your instructor, and that once delivered, they will transfer the mov file from the flash drive to a regular disk drive for playback.
You can test this yourself right now by dragging the mov file from your USB flash drive to your hard drive and playing it from there.
If it does not play correctly after having done that, post back.
In regards to the having other source files on the drive, are you confident they were created when you exported your finished movie to it?
What exact method did you use to export your movie - it should have been: remove all in and out points from the timeline, click on the sequence icon for the sequence you wish to export, go to the menu File > Export > Quicktime Movie and when the dialog box opens, make sure Make Movie Self Contained is checked, as well as Current Settings and Audio and Video, unless otherwise specified by your instructor.
If it were me, I would export the mov to my hard drive, the copy that export to the USB flash drive, but it is up to you.
The size of the resultant file is depends on the codec and frame size you used for the edit.
    Hope this helps.

  • When exporting: Error -2014 "the movie contains an incorrect duration"

My end goal is to be able to edit .FLV files in iMovie, so I need to convert them to a usable format. I already have QT Pro, so it's the first thing I tried.
I have Perian, so the .FLV files play with no issues, but when I try to export them to something usable in iMovie, it makes it to the end of the export process and gives the following error:
"The movie contains an incorrect duration -2014"
Has anyone had this issue? Are there any known fixes?

Select an in and out point other than the very start and end (usually a good idea anyway as there is often a bunch of junk you don't need there) and then do edit trim to selection and then save as. Once in a MOV container try exporting.
You might also try to select, copy , paste in a new player window and then save as, that new one and export from it after saving as.

  • Can Logic Export Audio into a Movie PORTION?

I am a film composer. I'd like to export as a quicktime movie, my cue(song mix) with the appropriate portion of the movie that it is synced up to. Preferably at a user defined resolution and compression setting (ie: so I can create little preview quicktime movies to show my directors over the net).
    Can this be done?
And if not, what application would be best to insert an audio file as a soundtrack into a Quicktime movie and get frame accurate results? Does PRO TOOLS do that?
    Thanks in advance,
    Evan EVans

    sorry mate, can't be done. what you can do is;
    1. with quicktimepro, extract the section that you want to do it with. you don't have to save the all the information, you can save it as a file referenced to the orginal film. when you do that, the file will only be about 165k as opposed to Gbs. so it's quick. you can then open that in logic and put your music onto the film and sync. (BTW depending on the codec you are using, you can still use movieplayer that came with authoring goodies back from OS 8 days, and that works in classic, though it doesn't play back very well, you can make the referenced file that works just fine in os x)
    2. import it into imovie and edit out the bit you need, but at that rate you might as well bring the cue into imovie as well. the advnatage there is that you can export the great new codecs with first class quailty and tiny file sizes.
finally, to my knowledge protools does not allow you to extract and bounce a portion of a quicktime movie. it is a quicktime thing. you have to have quicktimepro.

  • Can Final Cut Express 4 export videos into iDVD '06?

    Hello cp115,
Sorry for the unrelated question, but I am going to buy FCE 4 and was wondering if I could export videos made there into iDVD '06? I am assuming so.

An educated guess is that it will work. But I'd like you to confirm this prior to purchasing with apple directly (pre sales questions).

  • What settings to use when exporting HD into QuickTime Movie

This help call goes out to any Mac user with Final Cut. I need help!!!
I have a Mac G5 and use Final Cut Pro V. 5.1.4. I Just bought a Canon XH A1 and filmed a few test shoots. Then downloaded to FC Pro. I have been trying to export using QuickTime Conversion. Every setting I have tried comes out more or less square. HELP!!!!
    My Settings:
In Easy Setup - HDV - 1080i60 FireWire Basic
    Under Sequence the setting is:
    Frame Size - HD (1440X1080) (16:9)
Pixel Aspect Ratio - HD 1440X1080
No check mark in Anamorphic 16:9
    Field Dominance- Lower
    Editing Timebase - 29.97
    QuickTime Video Settings:
    Compression - Motion JPEG B
Under Export - using QuickTime Conversion - QuickTime Movie - Options - Video Settings:
    I tied:
    HDV 1080i60 and 50
    Motion JPEG A and B
    DVCPRO HD 1080i60
    All settings come out squarish!!!

    Hi Patrick,
Thanks for the info. But I can not get any setting to come out looking widescreen. All settings come out square looking. I have tried every setting I can think of but all the QuickTime exported movies come looking like (i.e.: 800X854) more box than widescreen. I think it must be some setting I do not know about or some combination or possibly the capture setting (easy setup).
    Thanks for your help.

  • Cannot export videos into iPod format?????

I have Quicktime Pro, and recently exported some 15 video or so into iPod format, then imported them into iTunes for storage on my 60 GB iPod 5G. Imagine my surprise to find the error message that some of the videos, including all but three of the ones I exported, cannot be played on my iPod. I even tried using iTunes to re-export the videos in iPod format, to no avail.
What's the deal? I thought the "export to iPod" option in Quicktime Pro 7.1.2 and the "convert selection to iPod" function in iTunes was so that I could vide my videos on this iPod. Why is this no longer working?????

There are some files (such as MPEG-1 and those with muxed audio) that Quicktime has trouble converting. I use iSquint for converting videos for my iPod, and it works great. It's faster than Quicktime, and it's also free!

I can't used my Quick Time Software with all futures, I want to convert from the CDRoom a DVD video to movie format into my computer, would you help with a good solution.

Are you referring to a commercial and hence copy-protected video DVD? If so, it's illegal in the US to attempt to break the copy protection, so we cannot help you with that question here.
If that's not what you mean, please post back and explain further. Feel free to post in your native language if you're more comfortable that way. There are people here who speak other languages and can probably help you more quickly.

  • Why can't I File-export-render video into a mpeg 4 rendering into a small .mov file format in cs6?

I create short videos using the PS frame animation panel. I used to be able to FILE-export-render video- and choose MPEG-4 Video in the settings panel which would render my file into a small .mov file. Now in CS6 the new render video panel does not have that option. I tried the QT options in the export window and my file is hugh! The H.264 option gives me an .mp4. I put the .mp4 into my web page via Dreamweaver and my video does not play when uploaded into the sever. The video plays fine in Dreamweaver before I upload to the server. After I upload to the server I just get a Q and no video on my web page.  If I render the same file in CS5 I am able to view it in my web page. • Exporting final cut video into DVD.

Hi I'm exporting video from final cut into IDVD but having problems as every video is pixelated, i need help in telling me which is are the best formats and settings to set it to, we are mostly doing wedding videos, and we want the quality of the dvd to be good in a tv and on my 30'' apple screen, any help is much appreciated, this forum is great...thank you all...
    Message was edited by: Bphoto

Use *Export/Quicktime Movie* (not Export/Using Quicktime Conversion): then you can select whether to Make Movie Self-Contained or not. Quality is the same, but if movie is self-contained you can move it to another Mac for burning; on the other hand it takes more time and disk space.
The resulting .mov file may be imported into iDVD, which will take care to compress it to MPEG2 before burning.
Note that this workflow is good for creating DVDs with iDVD. But the resulting DVD is best watched on a real (interlaced) TV, not on a (progressive) Mac/PC monitor.

Im just guessing but it seems like you would have to get your movie into the correct folder on a computer then use iTunes to sync it to your iPad. If you've synced to a computer and have movies then on your computer should be a folder with the movie in it. You could export your iMovie to something like Dropbox then download from Dropbox to the folder you think it needs to be in the sync your iPad again. Again this is just a guess. Others may have a better answer.

  • How can i put a 3GP video file into i movie?

I have put all my baby sisters videos into imovie to make a CD...
but the most important one (the one where she was born) wont go in because its not the (mov) format, its (3GP). Can anybody help?

You could use QuickTime Pro to export your file to DV Stream. This .dv file will work with any version of iMovie.
Because your .3gp file has small dimensions the export will resize it and image quality will suffer.
