Exporting vs. printing to postscript printer

I guess I am old school, since I have been using Distiller for 13+ years. What do most designers do now?

You're only referring to the dumbed-down version. In fact, real old timers walked uphill to school in the snow both ways while dragging their Heidelbergs, Linotypes, lead ingots, and process cameras on sleds behind them. They took breaks and photographed themselves with the cameras, and creatged beautiful long-grayscale negatives by special development in chemicals mixed in the warm water melted from the ice encasing their superheated bodies. Later generations, unfortunately, perished while trying to perfect a silver-based tri-color transfer printing process.<G>

  • PageMaker 6.5 set default PostScript printer for PDF export

My boss uses PageMaker 6.5 and it appears when she uses the Export to PDF option it is selecting a PostScript printer at random and asking it to "print to file" to create the PostScript file that it later gives to Distiller to create the PDF.  The problem is, she has a "virtual PDF print driver" installed that is not unlike the Adobe PDF printer driver, except it either doesn't support "print to file" or maybe just doesn't like something about the way PageMaker is using it.  It works great from other apps, but not PageMaker.  Anyway, is there a way to force PageMaker to use a specific PS printer for this, instead of picking the first one it finds?  I thought it might be alphabetical order based on driver or printer name, or port name, but I've tried changing all of those, and no luck.  I did install a new PS printer, and that worked for a bit (so I assumed it was using the most recent printer installed), but now it is selecting the virtual one again, and not working... not sure why.
If she sets the default printer to Adobe PDF Printer (she has Acrobat 9), it uses that one, and everything works fine.  She doesn't want to use that for her default printer though, and the printer she wants as her default isn't a PostScript printer, so PM doesn't try to use it.
Maybe a registry setting or something?  Or someone that can confirm the order that PageMaker looks for a printer to use, so that I can maybe trick it in to using a specific one?

If it wasn't my boss, I'd just tell her to do that.  She's been using PM for many many years, and hard to retrain yourself.  Of course, this might be the best option.  Seems like a weird design to "pick a printer at random" though, so hoping someone knows of some hidden option to force a specific printer.

How can I install a postscript printer in order to export to pdf?

I presume you mean that pop-ups are disabled. If you're using Safari, that setting is in the Safari Security preferences. For other web browsers, consult their documentation.

  • Export to PDF and Print to Postscript (in one step)

I am seeking a script that will do the following consecutively:
    * Export to PDF (PDF settings never changes, output directory never changes)
    * Print to PS (printer preset that is used never changes, output directory never changes)
It would save us a lot of time in our workflow having to do this in one step, with a single keyboard shortcut.
Since the same PDF and Printer presets are always used, as well as the output directories, It would
probably be easy to include those settings in the script itself, as opposed to some preference file, I'm guessing.
If anyone can help me write this, I'd much appreciate it.
    Thanks,
    Destin

    Thanks Gerald for the suggestion.
Looks like some powerful software there... and a bit pricey for what I need to do (over $500 US dollars, yikes).
Surely the script I am seeking is much less involved than that.  I suppose I'll have to try to do some Javascript myself,
which will be a learning experience...

  • Install Non-postscript print on Solaris 10 x86

I tried to setup a print queue on solaris 10 x86 for a Brother HL-1230 non-postscript printer which attached to Linksys EPSX3 print server parallel port 1 (L1).
    The network configuration as followed:
    EPSX3: 192.168.2.250
    Solaris box: 192.168.2.170
    /etc/hosts:
    192.168.2.170 neptune
    192.168.2.250 epsx3
I used the printmgr to setup my print queue. In the destination field I typed epsx23:L1 and pick up the printer drive by model number using ppd file.
I'm able to use the print queue to print text file, eg. /etc/hosts.
However, I didn't get any ouput from web browser. When I print from the PDF viewer, it complained there is no supported postscript printer.
Did I do something wrong in the setup? When I used the lpstat -p command to see the print queue status, it return nothing. Is there anything wrong with the print server daemon?
    Thanks.

  • Non postscript printer color difference

i am trying to understand when the colors i use in Illustrator or CorelPainter IX print differently than what is on the monitor - I just did a handpainted project in Painter - I scanned in the sketch to Illustrator and hand sketched over it to Illustrator - I then brought it into Painter to color - I dropped all of the layers and placed it into Illustrator to finish it - when it printed it gave me the message of colors will be different when i print on a non postscript printer - i don't remember ever getting this error before - i was going out to kuler to get colors and "making" them in painter by using the rgb values - after all this work it printed different in both Illustrator and PS - any help or tutorials on colors, printing, and non postscript printers would be helpful - i am also going to call my printer's customer service dept to help me out on this - thanx in advance O_O

If your Illustrator document color mode is CMYK, you must print to a PostScript device to ensure accurate color. That can be a printer with native PostScript firmware or something like a typical inkjet printer (an RGB device, CMYK inks notwithstanding) operating via (usually) optional PostScript RIP software.
A non-PostScript printer expects RGB data. When you print a CMYK document on such a device, a color space conversion must occur somewhere. That conversion is out of your control; hence, the unpredictable color.
    You have several choices:
    1. If your output is to your non-PS printer and
only that printer, work in RGB mode in Illustrator. You will then have the full range of color management options available to you.
    2. If you must work in CMYK (because you are ultimately going to press) and you wish to do local proofing, buy a PostScript printer or, at least, a third-party PostScript RIP for your existing printer, if available.
    3. You can use the "poor man's proofing" method: Assuming you have Acrobat,
    print (not
    save, not
export) to PDF using settings that convert to sRGB (e.g., for screen viewing). You can then print the document on your non-PS printer from Acrobat (or AI) using RGB color management. It's not the same as #2 above, but your colors should be reasonably accurate. This works because the Acrobat Distiller engine is, in fact, a PostScript RIP.

  • Can't print to a non Postscript printer on Mac

How do you get inDesign to print to a non postscript printer (HP laserjet 1200). Running CS3 on Mac 10.4.11
iD will not let me sellect the printer but defaults to Postscript file.

A quick way around printing to any non-PostScript printer is to export or distill a PDF and print that.
I've used this trick for years to print "colour proofs" on various different inkjet printers.

  • Gray color background in PDF exported from Crystal Report not printing correctly in Digital Printer (CMYK)

I am processing a crystal report on RAS server, and exporting it to PDF, using the RAS Dlls.
    Dim Report As ReportClientDocument
    Dim crExportData As New ByteArray
    Dim crExportType As CrReportExportFormatEnum
    crExportType = CrReportExportFormatEnum.crReportExportFormatPDF
    crExportData = Report.PrintOutputController.Export(crExportType)
A gray background is applied to an object in crystal report, with RGB color code (216,216,216).
On exporting this report to pdf, the color appears as required.
However, when printing this PDF in a digital printer (uses CMYK color format), the color changes to Pinkish Gray.
The color remains gray as required, in other printers.
Is there any way to make the exported PDF CMYK compliant?
    Please help.

From the info, I have no idea what version of .NET and CR you are using...
How is the printing from the CR designer?
How is the printing to another printer, say HP?
Do you have the latest updates for Digital Printer (CMYK) installed?
How does a plain pic with grey background print from a .NET app? (E.g.; is this a CR issue, or a framework issue? See:

  • LR3 won't print to my printer with postscript driver

System config below. Can print to USB attached Epson R1800 no problem. Can print to network attached HP2840 with the PCL drivers (though it comes out in black and white not colour). Can not print to HP2840 using Postscript drivers through either its USB or network port. Process monitor shows print engine thread consuming 1 CPU for each print job launched. Cancelling the print job in LR3 does NOT kill the print engine thread (!), leaving LR3 consuming 50% of my total CPU resource when I've tried to launch 2 print jobs. This worked fine under LR2.7 and all previous. No changes to printer drivers / config since LR3 upgrade.
Anybody with any suggestions and or experience (good or bad) with other postscript printing would be appreciated.

  • Printing with SMC4007ABR Print Server to PostScript Printer

I've just set up my Mac Mini in a new network configuration, with an old SMC4007ABR router/print server printing to my Ricoh Laser AP2100 printer, using IPP printing and the configuration for a Generic PostScript printer, which had worked for this printer in previous setups. I am using the IP address of the router, 192.168.2.1, and the queue name specified in the documentation "lpt1". When I log into the router to view the status page it says the printer is idle and ready. When I submit a print job, I get the message "Network host '192.168.2.1' is busy; will retry in 30 seconds...".
I have tried deleting the printer queue and recreating it, using the queue name with upper case, using the queue name specified for use with Windoze ("LP"), changing the router configuration from DHCP to manual IP assignments and back again, resetting the print system from the Printer Setup Utility, using the CUPS interface at http://localhost:631/ to modify the printer setup in any sane way I could think of. I have looked at anything I could find in this forum that seemed relevant, but haven't found anything to try which I haven't tried. I have tried the SMC technical support system, but the router is no longer supported by them, but by another firm which charges per incident, and doesn't support Macintosh.
I would appreciate any suggestions from people who know idiosyncracies of this router, or who have fruitful insights into this strange behavior. Clearly my Mini sees the printer queue, but not well enough to be able to transmit data to it. Thanks for any insights you can offer.

Thanks very much for your response. It seems I was ignoring the answer in some of the posts I was looking at, having misjudged that they were applying to a different sort of situation. I can't even remember what set of instructions from years ago established such a strong prejudice that I needed the IPP protocol. In any case, I'm grateful for your help.

  • Need to export windows 7 x64 builtin printer driver to a x86 print server

     Hi,
We're planning our migration to windows 7 x64. But our environment doesn't have a x64 server neither a Server 2008; we only have x86 server 2003.
We are having trouble with printer Konica Minolta Bizhub 161f. I spoke with Konica support, they advised me they do not have a x64 driver for this model yet. The tech told me i can use the
HP LaserJet Family PCL5 driver built-in windows 7. I connected the network printer and selected the built-in driver from the list. So far this works as a charm.
Here's my concern, in order to upload x64 drivers to a 32bit server, i need to first to connect the printer from the print server to my x64 computer. But when i try this, i don't have the
prompt to select a driver from win7 built-in drivers. When i choose connect to... it asks me to locate a INF file on my computer. I don't have the INF file since its built-in windows. I tried to look within Windows's file system, under "Windows\INF\" but i
    couldn't find what i need.
    1. How can i export or find a built-in driver file within windows 7?
2.Is there is a better way to upload x64 drivers to a 32bit Server 2003?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Regards,
    Benoit

    Hi Benoit,
    Thanks for the post.
Here is how we find the built-in driver file within Windows 7:
    1. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environments\Windows X64\Drivers\Version-3\{Printer Driver Name}, in the right panel, check the value of "InfPath". Now we will get the specific path of INF file.
    2. On a x32 Win2k3 server
    Click on Start, Control Panel
    Double click on Printers
    Press the ALT button
    or
Click on Organize, Layout, Menu Bar
Click on File, Run as administrator, Server Properties...
    Click on the Drivers tab
    Click on Add...
    Click on Next
Uncheck the 'x86 Type 3 - User Mode'
Check the 'x64 Type 3 - User Mode'
    Click on Have Disk...
Click on Browse... (to the x64 Win7 machine)
    \\X64Win7\c$\windows\system32\driverstore\filerepository\prn*.inf_{GUID}
    For example:
    \\X64Win7\c$\windows\system32\driverstore\filerepository\prnhp001.inf_5fecfc5e\prnhp001.inf
    Click on Open
    Click on Ok
    Under "Printers"
Select the print driver that you want to install
    Click on Next
    Click on Finish
Now you should be able to see the x64 print drivers installed under the "Processor" column.
    Click on Close
In this case, we need to pay attention to the match of INF file name. As the Konica Minolta Bizhub 161f 32-bit printer driver has been installed on Windows Server 2003, but you try to install HP LaserJet Family PCL5 64-bit printer driver. The two INF files
will not be the same, which causes the x64 driver can be instaled as an additional driver. So we need to change the INF file name to match the 32-bit one. I cannot guarantee that the method can totally work on this case as it may involve some custom settings
from printer manufacturer. If needed, I suggest you contact Konica Support when you go through it.
    Hope this helps.
    Miles

  • Lightroom 4 Export sizes not accurate? Print Space website london

    Hi Guys,
I'm currently exporting my images from lightroom 4 to get them printed at the print space in London
i exported 3 files at A4 size in mm, i then uploaded them onto the print spaces website and all 3 images are very slightly off in dimensions
i took all 3 pics with the same camera, same lens, and they are not cropped at all, all exported at 300 DPI, all exported into Jpeg, all export dims bang on
i also exported another image which was 16"w x 22"h, again i uploaded to the website and same thing it stated the original file size was 16,9" x 23.2"
i sent the guys a message but they only use photoshop, so not that clued up with lightroom, has anyone else experienced this problem
when exporting an exact size and yet it comes out slightly different?
could it be that lightroom 4's measurements are out? i find that unlikely as everyone would complain!
i'm struggling for ideas on what else to try to solve this issue
One thing the guy mentioned at the print space was that you can switch to custom sizes and enter what ever size you require the print to be
but when you amend the width, it automatically changes the height... and vice versa, so you cant pick both custom H and W at the same time.
who would have thought that printing in A4 would be so difficult !!! :-)
Thanks for your time hopefully someone might be able to shed some light on this.
    Cheers
    Chris

    We'll need some details
For one such photo, we need the exact pixel dimensions of the photograph (you said you didn't crop, so I want the pixel dimensions of the uncropped photo)
We'll also need to know your exact settings in the Image Sizing dialog box (screen capture is best, but you can type these in if you need to)
And since I'm an American and not familiar with A4, exactly what are the dimensions of an A4 piece of paper?

  • How to install Adobe printer's 'postscript driver' in mac os x

    hello again,
as posted recently hv a problem with adobe printer's postscript driver (ppd),In Indesign cs4 It shows ppd is missing while making Print File(.ps),
pls suggest how to install ppd again, i tried to install ppd driver downloaded from adobe website, but it fails to install.
    pls help.

I guess you didn't read the link I gave you inthe other thread...
Here's one of the comments that you would have found:
Short description to the workaround Solutions
    1) Usual workaround for printing with Distiller under SL and InDesign CS4:
Copy the PPD called “ADPDF9.PPD” (download-link here in this topic) to Library/Printers/PPDs /Contents/Resources/en.lproj
Works for CS4. Problem: Does NOT work for CS5.
    2) Workaround for InDesign CS5:
    - Go to Applications/Adobe Indesign CS5/Presets
    - Create a folder called “PPDs” (attention: foldername is case-sensitive!)
    - Copy the PPD called “ADPDF9.PPD” (download-link here in this topic) into this folder.
    - PostScript Printer will be useable within InDesign CS5
Hope that helped and clears up all questions so far.
    Cheers, hi2hello

In the printer driver (accessed through the Page Setup button) set the Advanced tab to borderless. Then in the right hand panel under Layout set all the margins to zero.

  • How to set up postscript Printer for printing graphics

We have a requirement to print Structured graphics. I found out that we need to set up a postscript printer for it. After debugging I found out that the Device Type name should be either GRAPHICS or POSTGR or ZGRAP.
How can we set up such a printer?
    Thanks in adv.

    Hi,
The Device Type names that you have provided are not listed in the SAP Central Note for Printers/device Types
    https://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/8928
However, you can again re-check this note with your printer model and check what suitable device types should be used. As you will find inthis note:
"Device type definitions are stored completely in tables and can be individually adapted, modified or enhanced. If SAP performs such an adjustment for a customer, it constitutes a consulting service, and is generally charged seperately"
SAP has now released the SAP Printer Vendor Program - https://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/1130927, printer manufacturers can develop and release device types for their printers.
https://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/1100779 contains a list of all participants
Information about the support for new printer models is contained in the "Printer Vendor Wizard Note" of the relevant manufacturer. A complete list of all "Printer Vendor Wizard Notes" is available in Note 1097990. If your printer model is not listed in one of these "Printer Vendor Wizard Notes", proceed as described in Note 1103826.
