Exporting Widescreen out of FCP 3?

I am trying to export a file out of FCP that was shot in widescreen, yet I don't want it to have the black bars on the top and bottom of the screen.
Is there a way to export out it out without it doing this?

It sounds like you are editing in a 4:3 sequence.
Your sequence must be 16:9, then export as current settings.

  • Exporting rushes out of FCP onto DVD QUICKLY!

I have a translator waiting for me to export rolls of rushes from FCP 5.1 onto DVD so they can start work. He doesn't need high res pictures - VHS quality would be fine. I can't seem to use Compressor to do it quickly. Any suggestions kind world? I've got FCP Studio loaded.

The encode will always start off longer than it will actually take. 50 minutes should take less than that. Kind of depends on how many tracks there are audio and video-wise. Again, with a MacPro you should get less than realtime encoding.
Now, that's the easiest way to do it. You could try this . . . export a quicktime movie first, then encode that movie for burning a DVD. I used to always do this as it was ultimately faster. But, that was on G5 and a G4. The MacPro I use now encodes right from within FCP pretty fast. You could try it and see which method works faster.
One more thing that may help . . . in FCP under "tools" go to the render manager and delete all your renders for that project. Then, re-render the timeline. This will give FCP less to deal with render file wise and may increase encoding speed. Of course, this may be offset by having to re-render an entire 50 minute timeline, but it's another option.

  • Cannot export to MPG2 from FCP 5.0.3

    Hey,
Finally getting ready to burn my project to DVD using DVDSP. When I go to export to MPG2 however, it isn't listed as an option in my available codecs. There is:
    MPEG IMX 8-bit PAL - 50 Mvb/s - 48 kHz
    or
    MPEG 4
Then under custom, there is another few MPGs that go something like this:
    MPEG IMX 525/60 (30Mb/s)
    MPEG IMX 525/60 (40Mb/s)
    MPEG IMX 525/60 (50Mb/s)
I also opened Quicktime and see that there is no codec there either to encode to DVDSP compatible format.
Needless to say Compressor has never worked, unless the appearance of an error message reading, "Cannot submit batch, cannot connect to background process" is the new definition of working. I've tried all the workarounds for Compressor that have appeared over the last 4 months or so.
I don't really want to export as DV-PAL or whatever and then import into DVDSP cos that will be two lots of compression and I'm assuming it won't come out too good.
Some help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Crazy

ooooh boy... that's not good news for me... I have totally given up on Compressor. I have reinstalled too many times to count along with various other fixes such as a sudo command in terminal, and disconnecting all firewire/ethernet cables. (Although even if it did work, it wouldn't be much use to me without Firewire cos that's where all my captured video is).
SOme guy on the Compressor board though was saying he doesn't use Compressor cos it's too slow. He exports directly out of FCP somehow? Can I import a sequence into DVDSP?... probably not.
This is insane... all those $$$ down the dunny cos I can't even get my project to DVD!!

  • HDV clips out of FCP to After Effects.... Settings???

    Hi,
I am capturing my HDV clips with the apple intermediate codec 1080. And exporting like that to. But when I make a 1080 comp. in AE it is square. I turn the 4:3 aspect ratio off but to no avail. Any idea what I need to make my settings in the AE comp.
    Thanks a bunch

Does it look squished horizontally? If so, make sure there are no 'anamorphic' settings checked in AE, or in your export settings out of FCP. That would make it look square.

  • Export Quicktime movie in FCP comes out as a Final Cut Pro Movie File

Does anyone know why when I Export Quicktime movie in FCP it comes out as a Final Cut Pro Movie File? I can still play it in Quicktime and it's possible to set the Quicktime Player as the default software, but it still says in my finder window that it is a Final Cut Pro Movie File.
Does anyone know if there are any settings for the clip to come out as a Quicktime Movie instead? Thank you!

+"The studio apps "brand" their exports. Actually kind of useful...+
In the words of the venerable Forest Gump, "Useful is as useful does" ... or something like that.
I actually use similar "icon" techniques in other areas of my workflow. But most of the time I just modify the file title for quick ID - I also use dashes & underscores to get things to stand out and stay at the top of lists etc.
But QT is my Go-To App for quick media reference and I have it set up to play almost all types off media when double clicked. I started doing it years ago when iTunes opened up every time I wanted to check a few seconds of an mp3 file.
I guess the best solution would have been for Apple to leave the "export FinalCut movie" option intact and simply add in an "export Quicktime movie" option as well. Or maybe add another drop down option for the tagging (branding).
At least we would have been able to make the workflow choices in-the-box rather than doing it with the OS.
    Andy Neil,
I think using the OS is the better option rather than re-compressing your movie just so you can double click into QT.

  • Need to export MAC PRO RES HQ footage out of FCP and into premiere friendly format

Ive been forced to switch platforms mid project (mac -> PC) and luckily have obtained picture lock so theres no loss to having lost my FCP project. The problem has been that when i went to load my footage into premiere or to even play the files with VLC nothing worked, and i discovered that it was infact the codec, which was a MAC only PRO RES HQ codec, so now i need to re-export my footage out of FCP into a windows usuable format.
What is the best codec/format to use that will maintain the original quality? Filesize is not an issue.

As Jim mentioned, you'd have to use an uncompressed codec--probably QuickTime Animation, as I'm not sure you can encode to an uncompressed AVI on the Mac.
You might also consider something like
Sheer Video. It's a QuickTime codec for both Mac and PC. You'd have to purchase the Mac encoder component, and I think you could then get the free playback component on the PC--though you might actually have to buy the PC version, too. There's also Digital Anarchy's
Microcosm. Both of these codecs are perceptually lossless, but offer far greater compression ratios (and manageability) than Animation. Not saying either is the best option, but they are options, nonetheless.

  • Quicktime Export causing Out of Sync Audio?

I'm trying to export a self contained Quicktime movie from my timeline, and every time I try, the audio ends up being out of sync. What am I doing wrong?
The audio is set to just the defaults, 16 bit, 48khz.
    Sequence settings: HDV1080p30
When I bring the final exported movie back into FCP, it plays out of sync.
Exporting through the Share feature to bluRay resulted in perfect sync audio, so I'm at a loss as to why this isn't working.
    Please help!

Allright, since nobody out there seems to have the answer - I'm going to share what I discovered so that the next person will actually get an answer without having to spend hours and hours finding it in other forums. Here goes:
Problem: Audio plays in sync on the timeline, an export from the timeline through Share to bluRay results in correctly synced audio; but a Quicktime Export with current settings results in a final movie where audio is out of sync with the video.
Solutions: I found two solutions to this problem:
1- When exporting to Quicktime Movie, check "recompress all frames". This solution had mixed reviews, with lots of people saying you should never do this, as it will reduce the quality of your final output; while others said the reduction in quality was not noticeable to the naked eye. I guess you can try it and be the judge.
2- In your sequence settings, change the compression setting to Apple Pro Res. This is the setting I decided to go with, as I'm currently awaiting the 10 hour render.
I did do a quick and dirty test on the ProRes option, where it appeared to work. Since the audio is correctly synced in the beginning of the video and then slowly falls out of sync (obviously the 30p to 29.97 problem), I had to run a test using my entire sequence. If you run a test on a 2 minute sequence, it will appear to be correct, because it is a slow falling out of sync issue - the problems occur later in your project (just fyi). Here is what I did (in case you want to try it on your project):
I created a new sequence and then changed the compression setting from HDV1080-30p to Apple Pro Res 422. I dragged my sequences into this sequence (so they were nested). I unlinked the audio and then selected about a 20 second area from about 3/4 of the way through the project. I sliced this section and then removed all the video before and after (so it would speed up render time and only render black, but I would still be able to see if the audio synced up later - I hope that makes sense - this made my export time only 12 minutes). After it exported, I reimported the movie, found the little 20 second area, and it was correctly synced. So, now I am exporting the whole thing. I sincerely hope this works. I don't have lots of 10 hour blocks just lyin' around!
Since my audio issue was most likely due to the fact that I captured and edited in 1080 30p, I believe it must be a bug in FCP that exports the Quicktime movie in 29.97 regardless of whatever your sequence settings are (believe me, I tried to change it to 1080-30p and it didn't work). That is why I think the Apple Pro Res option works, but it involves a total re-render of your project. This is also why I believe it plays fine in the timeline, because my timeline was set to 30p. Again, I also believe that is why my export to BluRay through Share resulted in correctly synced audio - the bluRay export I believe uses the Pro Res codec (which, by the way, took 19 hours).
Wish Apple would fix this bug.

  • Why is export quality HORRIBLE? FCP 7.3

Why can't I export a .mov quicktime movie from FCP 7.3 that looks EXACTLY like the image I get when playing the footage in the timeline?
These are my 2 biggest quality issues that I can't find a way to surmount:
    1. Interlacing.  Yes, I shot interlaced - bad idea, never will do it again.  But in FCP, viewed at full screen, the footage is beautiful - no interlacing artifact at all.  Once exported, it looks horrible. Please  no comments about "just choose 'deinterlace' when exporting." This  seems to horribly degrade the quality (see below) and it doesn't deinterlace it anyway at the same resolution as I'm viewing it in FCP - you have to scale the quality down from 1080i to 720p before the interlace artifact in the exported file is gone. And even then, the quality is much worse than 720p should be (see below).
    2. Saturation/bit depth/color quality: Once exported - no matter what quality I choose and no matter whether I check 'deinterlace' or not - the color goes down the drain once exported.  It looks pathetic. Oversaturating the image before exporting in hopes of a correct saturation by the time it's exported does not work. The image is simply very, very washed out once exported.
Bottom line: If the footage looks beautiful IN final cut, viewed at full screen, we KNOW it can look beautiful OUT of final cut, viewed on the same screen.  How is this accomplished?
    A few technical details:
    Footage specs:
    Shot in 59.94i, 1080
    AVCHD
    .MTS
Imported RAW into FCP using Log and Transfer.
Once ingested into FCP (using default ingest settings):
    29.97i
    1920x1080
    Upper (odd) field dominance
    Square pixel aspect ratio
    Apple prores 422
    Export specs:
    Compressor: H.264
    Frame rate: Current
    Keyframes: Automatic
    Data Rate: Automatic
    Frame recording: Unchecked
    Quality: Best (multipass)
    Encoding: Best quality
    Export size settings:
I have tried all of the following settings, each with 'deinterlace' checked AND unchecked, respectively.  And each with bad results:
    1920x1080
    1600x900
    1280x720
    and other sizes of 16:9
Any ideas on this is HUGELY appreciated.

Thanks for all the great input everyone.
    To your questions:
    Jason: I'm using QT 7.7.
Michael:  Very helpful thoughts.  I did export using quicktime instead of QT conversion and it looks identical - no problem....when viewing the exported file with FCP.  When viewing it with QT 7.7, with the settings suggested by David, it's the same old crap I've been gettng all along.  I"m new to Compressor and I'm using version 3.5.  Can you advise a specific workflow for using Compressor here?  As far as customizing QT for FCP color, I assume you mean the option in the Preferences 'Enable final cut studio color compatibility'.  This is the only setting I see of relevance...
Russ - Final cut pro DOES accurately show image quality.  At full screen view, my footage looks great in FCP.  If it can look greatin FCP, it should be able to look great OUT of FCP.  The question is just how to use the best compression setting to get the export file size down without sacrificing all that quality.... I'm judging by the monitor because I'm shooting for monitor end-viewership, not TV.
Bottom line - sounds like Compressor is the way to go.  If someone could give me some pointers on Compressor workflow with this situation, that would bed awesome. I've never used the program before - 'export using QT conversion' in FCP has always been sufficient up until now.
    Many, many thanks!

  • Can't get movie out of FCP

Hi, I have just created a fairly simple 75-minute movie in FCP 7, and for the life of me, I can't send it to Compressor to make files for creating a DVD. Compressor will do its thing for a few hours, then "Failed". Then out of curiosity, I tried to export it to a simple Final Cut Movie (not 'self-contained') and all I got was spinning pie. I just don't know what to try to get this movie out of FCP! Any suggestions would be most welcome.
    Thanks, Bob
    MacPro  10.6.6

It will be useful if you give us some specifics.
What is the codec of the source media? H.264, HDV, DVCProHD or ? (Quicktime is not a codec. It is a wrapper that can support a wide range of codecs.)
Where is the media stored? System hard drive, second internal drive, external firewire drive, or ?
What are the timeline setttings? What codec is it using?
Your explaination of your process is very unclear. Have you tried exporting the project using "Current settings" and "self contained". Then take that file into Compressor.

  • Export DPX files from FCP with Timecode

    Hi,
Have anyone found a way to export DPX files from FCP, and also get the timecode in the DPX header...
    Thanks for answers!!
    //P

    Your workflow is not correct.
In FCP I bring the clip to the timeline, trim, color correct it then File> Export> Using Compressor. Compressor opens up and places the clip into the Batch Window. This works fine, but when I go back to FCP, delete the clip from the timeline and place an other clip there and when I Export>Using Compressor, Compressor places the clip in a new Window title "Untitle 1" and so it goes on. As far as I understood, whenever you add a clip from the FCP it places it below the first clip so when I want to add my settings, I can add all 3 settings to all the clips. Did I missunderstand something?
You're misunderstanding a couple of different things. When you send a clip or sequence from FCP to Compressor, you cannot then apply the settings you want in Compressor then go back to FCP and delete that clip from your sequence ... Compressor is trying to reference that sequence. If you keep removing clips, then Compressor won't follow those clips ... you're essentially breaking the link between Compressor and FCP by doing this.
    Try this:
    1. Load Clip A into the Viewer, Set your In & Out points and add your Color Correction.
    2. Press Command U to Make a Subclip. This will create a separate "clip" in your bin. Rename as necessary.
    3. Repeat this process for your other 19 clips.
    4. Then Select all of your new subclips in your Browser, then File > Export > Using Compressor. This will open Compressor and add all of those subclips into the Job window.
    5. Add your appropriate Target settings and set your Destinations and revise any filenames if necessary.
    6. Click Submit.

  • H.264 out of FCP

Hello, Im new to FCP and Im trying to get a project out of FCP to a quicktime movie with the H.264 codec. My project was captured in 1080/60i and its 4 minutes and 39 seconds long. If I export to compressor and chose the 720HD 30p output the file is 660 meg. Of course Way to big , what I want to do is compress it in the H.264 codec down to about 200 meg.
When I change my render settings in FCP to H.264 and try to render I get "codec error".
If I try to export to quicktime movie and choose custom present-H.264 the same thing happens.
    Any help is greatly appreciated

    Export using quicktime conversion.

Do you have any filters applied to your clips?
This happened to me before, I accidently had applied a broadcast safe filter to a color matte that was black....
I figured it out by duplicating my sequence and deleting items from my timeline 1 by 1 until I was able to export a reference movie.
Anywho, export again, this time with "self contained" movie selected.
Then try to import to Compressor.

  • Exporting QT file from FCP with multiple audio channels...?

Is there a way to export a QT file out of FCP that will not mix down all of your audio? This file could be a FCP QT or just a regular QT, doesn't really matter!
But If I wanted to edit with self contained Qts that had been synced from a wav file that had 8 tracks, Each from a different mic. How is this possible?

    Hi -
    For FCP 7:
    Click on your timeline.
Type Command - 0 (Zero) and click on the Audio Outputs Tab.
Change the number of outputs you want, and set the track pairs up as stereo or dual mono, as you want.
Click OK, a warning dialog box will come up that you can dismiss.
On the timeline, Option-Click on each audio track right below the auto-select toggle icon, and from the drop down menu, route the track to the desired output track.
When done, export the Quicktime movie.
The only way you will verify that all the tracks are there is to either open the exported quicktime in Quicktime pro and menu Window > Show Movie Properties. You'll see the additional tracks listed there -OR- just import the exported movie back into FCP and bring it up in the Viewer, you'll see all the audio tracks.
Make sure you restore your sequence back to two channel ouput, if you want, when you are done.
    Hope this helps.

  • Exporting multiple projects from FCP timeline hangs

When rendering multiple projects from Final Cut Pro's timeline through compressor, I get varied results. I am rendering 3 files - Apple Pro Res, MPEG-2 (VBR Highest quality for Blu-Ray), & 48khz AIFF audio file.
Typically we will set up 3 projects for one night to render overnight (30 minutes to 1 hour for each project). In the morning when we come in compressor will sometimes show up as 90 hours remaining, sometimes it will still be cranking out on the last project with 12 hours remaining. If we leave it going it will eventually finish. However when we shut everything down, reboot computer, start export from timeline and it completes the render in HALF the time compressor stated remaining before we closed it. Each project typically takes 6-8 hours to get all three files (pro res, MPEG-2, AIFF) we allow 18 hours for render.
Drive space should not be an issue. We have a 5 TB array (typically has 2 TB free for 4 projects), system drive has 350 GB free and the 4 projects rendered out will take up approximately 300 GB. The project reads, and writes to the array for everything.
Any help on trying to figure out why compressor slows down over time. Once restarting compressor goes as expected.
Thanks for the help in advance.

All software is up to date latest versions of FCP and Compressor.

This is like an EDL...Edit Decision List.  This basically is a metadata rich document that is used to transfer clip information between systems.  You can export an XML from FCP 7 to FCP 6 so that you can open a sequence, or a project.  Export an XML of the sequence and open that up in Excel to have clip name, reel and timecode information for tracking footage.
No media is enclosed in this file.

  • Exporting Final Sequence from FCP....

    Hello all:
I am trying to export a wedding video out of FCP 4.5 and am having audio problems. It seems fine for he first 30-40 seconds and then the audio breaks up for about 5 seconds and then drops out altogether. The Video doesn't appear to have any problems. When I go back and reopen the project in FCP it plays back fine audio and video. I am exporting the final sequence (collection of nested smaller sequences) as a self-contained quicktime movie, NTSC 720x480 DV, both audio and video. It's 1hr, and 40 min project, (Lots of LONG winded toasts), shot on DV and normal wedding music aiff format. What am I missing, or doing wrong?
    Sincerely,
    Frustrated...

I remember having to do a mixdown in each of my nests when dealing with this issue in 4.5.
You can also do an end-run around FCP's mis-management of the audio renders by manually throwing away the audio render files for the project in the finder and re-opening the project.
You might also try using the Advanced Format Conversion in Compressor, as that should ignore any pre-rendered material from your sequence.
Also, I have seen this problem when combining 44.1k audio (from a music CD) and 48k audio (from digital video) in the same 48k sequence. You might find it helps in the long run to re-export the CD audio as 48k and replace the music in your sequences.
    Hope this helps -
