Expose, Cmd Tab, Screenshot, Spaces all breaking

Not sure what causes this, I thought it was sleeping but apparently not.
All Expose, Cmd Tab, Screenshot and Spaces will all be fine but they theyll stop working and I also cannot reboot or log out, the Mac just wont.
I have to go Terminal -> "sudo reboot" to force a restart.

Couple of possibilities. The first thing I'd try is clearing your launchServices caches.
Launch Terminal and copy & paste this at the command line to rebuild LaunchServices:
Code:
<pre class="alt2" style="margin:0px; padding:3px; border:1px inset; width:640px; height:34px; overflow:auto">/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user</pre>
Then press return. Wait until terminal returns to the command line. Quit Terminal. After that, log out and back in or restart. Let us know

This occurs in tandem with a menu bar situation where the spotlight and bluetooth icon and one or two icons on the far left appear, but not the time, sound, monitor wireless etc.
Also I have to force quit everything and restart won't work so i have to hlld the power button down to shut the mini off.
    Restarting usually helps
    I'm running 10.5.6 on a 1.42 mini.

  • Spaces / Firefox / CMD Tab

    Hi @Apple
    1) Even if i switch with CMD-Tab to Terminal in Spaces 1 and then back to Firefox, i had to click into Firefox, because it's not active.
    2) If i have more terminal windows open and switched back to terminal in antother Spaces Window the last active terminal is now in background and another one has the focus.
    3) Whish: Could you please give me the ability to change the effect when i switched between spaces. I whish the cube effect. It's so cool....

I am also experiencing all these problems. 10.5 has some great features which I am really enjoying using, but I have to say I'm a little disappointed in Apple for releasing the system at this stage, it really is below the grade.
Command-tab will often switch me to the other app, but will not change from the current space to the space the app is in, let alone set the correct window focus. This is happening with many Leopard apps too, mail,, safari finder, not just third party.
Can't wait for 10.5.1, let's hope it fixes many of the bugs.

  • Various Keys disabled - Cmd-Tab, Cmd-`, Bright+, Bright-, Expose, Dashboard

Before I start - I have to state I do have two cats who like to sit on the keyboard, and might have flicked just the right combination of keys to do all this apart from making the computer "Purr" for a good ten minutes... anyhow -
About a month ago I noticed my 24inch 2.4Ghz iMac runnig 10.5.5 stopped allowing me to switch applications via Cmd-tab (now jumps to the toolbar highlighting the first button) and switching between windows within the same application - Cmd-` does nothing now.
I've also noticed that Bright- (F1), Bright+ (F2), Expose (F3) and Dashboard (F4) no longer responds to the associated tasks.
    I've checked the following
    * Rebooted machine - reseated the keyboard USB into different USB port
    * Screen Shared from my Macbook and tried same key combo (making sure keyboard not at fault) - same response
    * Keyboard & Mouse -> Keyboard - "Use All F1, F2 etc keys as standard function keys" is un-ticked
    * Keyboard & Mouse -> Keyboard Shortcuts - Clicked on "Restore Defaults"
    * Universal Access -> Keyboard - Sticky Keys OFF, "Enable access for assistive devices" is un-ticked
The only software other than apple updates that I've installed in this period is apple updates and Microsoft Intellipoint

I recently moved my office about, and had EVERYTHING unplugged, once I plugged everything back in and the system was in a different orientation everything was back to normal...

  • Spaces and Cmd-Tab

I've found that Cmd-Tab to change between apps doesn't work after a while when I have spaces enabled. After I'd first installed Leopard Cmd-Tab would happily take me between spaces to the application I was moving to, but now it only appears to work for a short time after I've rebooted or if I disable spaces.
Anyone else seeing this? It's on my iMac G5.

  • CMD Tab not switching to apps in different Spaces

This has been a problem in the past and looks like it's still lingering in Mavericks. Yes I do have the Preferences option set btw
I think it seems to be triggered for me when disconnecting my external monitor (connected via Thunderolt aka MiniDisplayPort to DisplayPort cable). So once I'm using the laptop screen only then CMD+Tab doesn't switch to the correct Space. Not sure if it's when I disconnect when my MBP is sleeping or awake, something else I can test I guess..
Anyone else still getting this, and in the same situation re ext screen?
killall Dock makes it work again though.

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a way to do that, or at least in my testing I can't make that happen.

    Dear John,
thank you for your prompt reply. After I sent the email, I left the wheel spinning to see if it would eventually stop. It didn't, but after a while the screen turned blue, so I decided to switch everything off with a forced shut-down. I could not restart with the OS DVDs because I am currently away from home, but fortunately everything was more or less fine after restarting. It then got stuck again, I forced it shut again, restarted again, and now it seem to work but I won't overdo it and will switch off smoothly after writing this (unless it gets stuck again). Last April I have replaced the HD, so it's now just under 6 months old. And, of course, since the crash occurred when I was abroad and had backed up just before I left, I have lost only a few days' work. Still, and I know this will make me hugely unpopular here, with my 5 previous laptops running on MS Windows I never had a problem. Which does not mean I loved the OS, or I would not have switched to Mac.
Anyway, and this is the main reason for this message, thank you very much again for your speedy intervention.

  • App switching (cmd-tab) and Expose stop working

This has happened to me several times in the last couple of days: Suddenly the cmd-tab command for switching applications stops working, as well as my active corners for Expose. No matter if I use the laptop's keyboard or an external one. After a restart everything works again. Any ideas?

I'm having the exact same problem. I think it may be somehow tied to the new update of itunes (9.0.1) because when I try to cmd+tab after open itunes it activates tabbing within the itunes fields.

  • When I now use the cmd-tab shortcut to go to a different open application it madly scrolls through all the open applications and does not let me select one. Any ideas as to what might be wrong. It doesn't appear to be a sticking key?

Problem with the cmd-tab keyboard shortcut now cured with the latest software update, so the original problem must have been a software glitch.

  • Update to 10.10.2 breaks dock, cmd+tab

Late 2010 MacBook Air. Updated to 10.10.2, dock freezes and cmd+tab doesn't page through open aps (nothing happens). Removed several 3rd party aps, no improvement. Restored 10.10.1, reupdated, same problem. Turned off auto-update and am sticking w/ 10.10.1 for now but would like to fix this. Ideas?

    Try a restart.
Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

  • Cmd-TAB is not working in 10.9

    Hi,
since Mavericks the application switcher is not working correct. When I switch to an other application using cmd-TAB the menue of the other application is shown, but no windows of this application will be shown. In older versions of OS X the app switching via cmd-TAB was no problem.
Is ist possible to bring back the old behavior of the shortcut cmd-TAB?

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to gather information about the state of your computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it on this page. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them.
Here's a summary of what you need to do: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a couple of minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking  anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in your browser, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign ($) or a percent sign (%). If you get the percent sign, enter
    exec sh
in the window and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know your password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that takes administrator privileges.
The test may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report your results. No harm will be done.
    8. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If it happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

  • Quick dock question---Using cmd-tab

    Hello,
I am very used to using alt-tab to cycle through all the windows in XP. In XP it would cycle through all the open windows regardless if they were maximized, minimized, etc...
In OS X if you minimize a window cmd-tab wont bring it out from the dock (it will bring the program forward on the top of the screen but the window will remain locked in the dock until you click on it). Is there a keyboard shortcut to bring a minimized window out from the dock?
    Thanks!

Oh yeah, I didn't notice you had a Macbook which means the Fx buttons have special functions. So, you would have to use the sequence fncontrolF3 to focus on the dock.
Note that you can change the settings for the Fx keys in System Preferences->Mouse & Keyboard to make such that they operate like a desktop model. When you do that, the modifier key (fn) is required to get to the special functions like volume, screen brightness, etc.
The window behavior in Mac OS X is not like Windows. The maximize button does not make the window fill the screen such that it takes over the whole thing. You can manually size it full screen by dragging the bottom corner though. This window behavior is bothersome to Windows users, but you'll get used to it. I do recommend using Expose as opposed to trying to make the Dock work like the Taskbar.

  • Why are my cmd tab icons polarized?

all of the sudden today my icons started looking "polarized" when using cmd+tab or moving icons around on my dock.  screenshot:
my icons also look like this when i drag them from a finder window on to my desktop.  what gives?
i've tried the usual suspects like restarting as well as shutting down and booting again but this has persisted.

Hmm, my tabs screen looks the same as other recent versions. Could you double check both the non-private and private tabs (the two icons at the upper left of the tabs screen) in case your missing tabs are in the other category?

  • Dock/Cmd+Tab Icons shows up as blank

Recently all icons relating to webkit (chromium, safari, mailplane, fluid, even pages (not sure if it relates to webkit though..)) shows up as blank in the dock and cmd+tab boxes, however they show up just fine in the applications folder. very odd behaviour.
any ideas what might be causing this?
    screenshot http://bit.ly/bcG9b0

Simply, removing the concerned applications and re-adding them to the dock, reseted the icons. Duuh.

  • Bug with Show Whitespace and tab and space characters in SQL comments

If Preferences > Code Editor > Display > Show Whitespace Characters is checked, and I type the following in SQL Worksheet:
    --A[tab]B[space]C
It renders with two spaces between B and C. The first one is a blank space without the light dot character used to signify a space character, and the second space is filled with the dot character. The caret is then blinking before the C instead of after it:
    --A[tab]B[space][dot][|]C
Further selection actions and editing in the region produce "corrupted" results. I've tried changing fonts, but there was no change to the behavior. Multiple tabs before the B produce multiple blank spaces immediately after it, and when placed at the end of the line the caret is then shown another space to the left of the C:
    --A[tab][tab]B[space][space][|][dot]C
If I turn off Show Whitespace Characters the rendering immediately corrects, and caret placement, selection action, and editing behaviors all work as expected.
This is observed on OS X with both the Mac OS X and Oracle/Fusion Blue look and feels.

are you using an "Expert Mode" query or not?
With normal mode, the query is stored in an XML attribute.
With expert mode, it's stored in a CDATA Section, which allows it to respect all user-spacing and newlines.
XML attribute values are forced by the XML 1.0 spec to be normalized, and this is done by the parser when they are read in. That might account for your different in space treatment.
