Exposé crashes Yosemite, must hard-restart
Invoking the Exposé feature on my Mac (MacBook Pro mid-2010 15" model 6,2) has been causing it to crash. I have Exposé set so that moving the pointer to the upper-left corner shows the open windows of the front-most running app. I have the upper-right corner set to show clusters of windows for each of the running apps.
Moving to the upper left causes all of the open windows to clear from the screen altogether, leaving a blurred backdrop that's the color of the picture on my desktop (a picture of the Mars landscape from an orbiter). The mouse pointer is still visible and can be moved normally, but it can't select anything, After repeatedly moving the mouse to and from the upper left corner, eventually a scrambled arrangement of fragments will appear on the screen, as shown in the screen shot below, and the pointer changes to the beach-ball. Notice that the icon of the hard drive on the Mac desktop appears in three places.
(description continues after this screen-shot)
This seems to happen only when the pointer/cursor/mouse is moved to the upper left very quickly, or by mistake by brushing the track pad. My theory is that this is happening because the animation of the windows, as they are moving to their positions in Exposé, is happening too fast for the graphics RAM buffer to handle.
I opened Console to see if I could figure something out, but I didn't know what to look for - maybe someone reading this can tell me, so I can help trouble-shoot this. I don't have much hope that there is an easy fix...
In case this is another hint, this MacBook Pro is one of the models that had graphics processor issues in Mavericks, which were eventually resolved with a later dot-release of Mavericks. See this thread: Graphics corruption issue continues in Mavericks 10.9.1
PS - This situation may be the same issue that's also reported here:
App Expose freezing Yosemite
You have the MacBookPro6,2—the Edsel of Macs. It may have the logic-board defect that was covered by a recall program that has now ended.
Residents of the EU may be entitled to warranty service for up to six years after purchase.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider, to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers do not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue that Apple calls "VST" (for "Video Switching Test.") Ask for it. A "Failed" result means that the fault is present.
You may be quoted a price of about $300 (in the U.S.) for a "depot repair," which involves shipping the unit to a central repair facility and takes about two weeks. For that flat fee, anything found wrong with it should be fixed, not just the logic board.
Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility. If you decide to pay for a new logic board, test thoroughly during the 90-day warranty period on the repair. Some owners have reported that they went through as many as three replacement boards before getting one that worked.
If you don't want to pay for the repair, you may (or may not) be able to work around the problem by disabling automatic graphics switching. To use the discrete graphics processor, you'll need a third-party utility to switch to it manually.
Often the problems start after an OS upgrade. If the upgrade was recent, and you have backups, then you can revert to a previous OS X version.

Every time I place a bid on Ebay my firefox crashes and must be restarted. This is the only time this happens. It seems to be ok until I actually confirm the bid and within a second or two firefox crashes.
This is most likely caused by '''The Browser Highlighter''' add-on. Uninstall or disable this add-on from Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions. You could also try finding an update for this extension.
See [[Uninstalling Extensions]] and https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/682558
If that does not solve the problem:
Go to the address '''about:crashes''' and tell us your latest crash IDs. We can then look at the data specific to your crash and have a better idea of what is causing the problem. -
MacBook Air (Mid 2013/Mavericks) - Freezes, requires hard restart
11-inch, Mid 2013 MacBook Air.
Upgraded to OS X Mavericks in December 2013 - have downloaded every fix/patch as prompted by the App Store.
Relatively simple use pattern - word processing and web work. No bootcamp or 3rd party software, out side of Mozila products (that I am aware of).
Aproximately once every 12 hours (regardless of continuous use), the entire computer freezes. It does not take input from any input devices/including external keyboard and mouse (which I normally do not use). The only way to fix this is a hard-restart.
I have previously suffered from sleep/wake crashes, this is a new sympton of purpose the same problem?
Getting anxious as I approach my final exams - which are written on computers. Apple - which specifically targets students and technologically unsavvy customers - has created a faulty product, unfit for the purpose for which it was sold.
Any suggestions on fixing or mitigating this problem?
My only thoughts have been a link to RAM use? I don't usually browse flash-websites or keep more than one word processing window open at once.!
Many Thanks!1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) on the advice of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

Hey everyone, I've been searching for quite awhile for an answer to this issue, and I haven't found it - so I figured I would post a question about it. To give some details, whenever I soft restart my Macbook Pro (By resetting it through the "restart" option at the top left) it will shut down to a gray screen and just sit there forever. The only thing I can do, as far as I know, is a hard restart - by holding down the power button and shutting it down - I know this isn't good for it, but again, it's about the only option I've got.
I've tried to verify/repair my disk permissions, and that hasn't helped.
I've also not installed any software since before that started happening. I'm also using OS 10.8.2 - I don't remember what was installed prior to that though - but it's an early 2011 model...the problem actually started happening well before I updated to Mountain Lion, and it's still happening now.
Thanks! If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful. -
IMac runs slow intermittently; occasional freezes require hard restart.
Recently, my iMac (27", mid-2010, OS X 10.9.3) has begun intermittently running very slow, with occasional freezes requiring hard restarts. I've been keeping activity monitor open and notice that multiple Google Chrome Helpers open (4-5 of them) with each using 98%+ of CPU capacity. Not sure if they relate to the slow response time. They are sometimes open in the activity monitor, but response times on the iMac are normal. Then, suddenly, the iMac slows to a crawl, with 15-45 second beach balls, sometimes followed by complete freeze and crash.

Macbook Pro Running Slow, Constant Force Quit and Hard Restart
Unlike other folks in this forum, my Macbook Pro has been on the downturn for the last several months, as opposed to suddenly having issues when I downloaded Mavericks or some other program. I try to shut it down regularly so it's not constantly running, close out programs as I finish with them, etc, but it still seems to be very bogged down. I did Etrecheck with some more details on the issues below:
Problem description:
Macbook Pro running slowly with a myriad issues, including:
-I often have to force quit applications to close them because when I try to close them regularly, I get the rainbow wheel.
-When my Mac goes to sleep, it sometimes will not respond when I try to wake it back up and I will have to hard restart to get it to do anything. When it DOES respond to me moving the mouse, it will take a minute or two to boot up, during which time I get the rainbow wheel, or it will be stuck on the sign in page but won’t allow me to click in the password box or type my password.
-I get a pop up asking me to install Java Runtime Environment every few hours, but when I try to download it, the website says it’s not compatible for Mac- yet I still get the notification on my computer all the time!
-When I am connected to Apple TV and my computer goes to sleep, the screen on my laptop won’t return to normal size, even though it is no longer displaying to the Apple TV.
-And those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head…

White Screen computer hard restart
I have been having this problem for some time ( I have been with apple since the Apple 2) and I have not been able to figure out what is the problem. I have put in new ram (then took it out and put the old one back in to test it) I have reset pram. My computer will heat up if it has been on for about 12 to 6 hours and then go to the white screen and says to press any key to restart your mac, or it will if I am playing a couple of hours on World of Warcraft. Could you please help me I have given you a ETRCheck and console report on the last hard restart. Thank you in advance for your help
ETRECheck report
Problem description:
When my computer is turned on for a long while or when I play World of Warcraft for a short time my computer will turn itself off with a white screen saying that the computer was turned off for a reason. It has been doing this for the past 3 months. Any ideas

Updated to 10.5.5 - now beachball freeze forcing hard restart
A week ago I ran the update to 10.5.5 through Software update, along with several other things (security, itunes). I started getting the spinning beachball, and it's not letting me quit application or force quit anything, I have to do a hard restart.
I dug through these forums and found a potential solution. Download and run the combo update, then reinstall itunes through the download. Did both. Still getting the beachball.
Triggers: It seems to do it every time when I open a PDF made from an Open Office document (opening in Preview). Today it crashed just attempting to open Open Office 3.0 beta. Later it crashed just trying to open the Adobe Acrobat Reader application folder.
I just ran permission repairs. It looked like it repaired somethings, mostly relating to Airport (which I'm not using on this computer).
Any ideas? There is a major problem with the PDFkit system component.
I have exactly the same problem here. My PDF file is generated by my HP ScanJet device.
The PDFs work well on Adobe Reader on both Mac and PC with no indication for an invalid PDF file.
The files also work well on Tiger (intel/PPC).
Also other files downloaded from the internet are affected.
Just Leopard on intel seems to be affected so far. I am not sure about Leopard on PPC.
It does not matter whether you are having a preview with QuickLook or opening it in Preview.
The interesting thing is that when you run Preview using Rosetta, then the system does not get unresponsive. But this trick does not apply to QuickLook since this is not a stand alone application.
Is there a way to disable QuickLook? -
All of a sudden I keep getting message that my computer must be restarted and it freezes. I restart it and within minutes it happens again. This is a 27 inch iMac with latest system and software. Any ideas of what is wrong and how to fix it?
10.7.5 is not the latest system, 10.8.3 is. However your message sounds like a Kernel Panic, does the message look similar to About "You need to restart your computer" (kernel panic) messages? If so, then if you can get the machine to restart normally then please post the Kernel Panic Report which you can find by following directions in How to log a kernel panic. Please post back with the KP log, and we can take a look. However if the machine continues to not restart then my guess is a hardware failure suck as a hard disk or failed RAM in which case you should take it into your local Apple Store or AASP for repair.

After I launch Camera Raw to do additional retouching work the cursor/SW freezes. Only way out of the problem is to do a hard restart. It happens every time now. Using Windows 8.1. Any ideas and solutions? Thanks.
It will pop up with a window asking if you want to clear the preferences. You must press Ctrl+Alt+Shift immediately after initiating ACR by pressing "open with Camera Raw."
I haven't heard of any bugs in the ACR 8.7 for CC, but that doesn't mean that there aren't. -
Macbook pro freezes & after a hard restart i get a grey screen & horiz bar
i have a intel 2.3ghz macbook pro that is freezing up... and the only way to unfreeze it is to do a hard restart.... then when it is starting i get a grey screen with a while apple logo and a horizontal progress bar near the bottom of the screen? the computer seems to run fine after it starts until it freezes again... usually it freezes a couple of times a day... i have run disk utility and repaired the permissions and also done a disc check.. the disc check said that the hard drive was ok.... i have backed it up via time machine and superduper back up... my laptop is running osx 10.6.7 and it says that the software is up to date... the hard drive is a 500 gig hitachi and was replaced a couple of months ago... i have 105 gigs of free space... any ideas on what is going on? and what i can do to fix it... i am heading out of the country for a couple of weeks on monday...
I reloaded OS X 10.6 with the install disk (CD) and then upgraded back to 10.6.6 using the downloadable 10.6.6 Update Combo file from the Apple site. Below was the exact sequence:
1. Download 10.6.6 Update Combo file connected via a direct ethernet connection. I wasn't able to accomplish the download via wireless because my computer crashed before I could get the entire file. I saved this on an external hard drive, also, just in case. I also backed up vital files.
2. Reinstall 10.6 via install disk. Put disk in drive and restart holding down "C", per the instruction blurb on the CD. This took about 45 min. Note that the "progress" time didn't seem to match what was going on.
3. After the 10.6 install was complete, I opened and ran the 10.6.6 Update Combo
After (3), everything has been fine. Total time was about 1 hr. All of my files/programs seem to have made it through untouched.
I've been tempted to try the 10.6.7 Update, but am still gunshy from the experience. I have a feeling that if one were to use the 10.6.7 Update Combo in (3), things would work out fine. I'd love to know if this is the case, but for right now, I'm pretty happy that my computer is back to normal. Hope this helps.
BTW I think you can probably restore via Time Machine, but the above is what I did.

New MBP crashing (beachball) while hard drive makes chirping sound
My 3 week old 15" MacBook Pro crashes at least once a week. I get the beachball and the computer becomes unresponsive to any commands (although the mouse pointer still moves). Meanwhile, the hard drive is making regular chirping sounds. The computer is not being moved so it isn't the motion sensor (unless the sensor is malfunctioning). Only option becomes a hard restart with loss of all unsaved work. Any one else experiencing this problem? Any ideas?
Please can you post the outcome of your visit to the Apple store. My MBP does this every now and then, and I think it is the motion sensor. I usually wait the chirping out - it can go on for quite a while but does stop eventually. I haven't been able to get to an Apple store so would be interested what you are told. I think it is the 7200 500Gb drive.. seems some had issues.
Thanks

Hello there, vsanfilippo2.
If you're iOS device isn't recognized at all on your computer, then the following Knowledge Base articles provide some great troubleshooting steps to follow, depending on the Operating System running on your computer:
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for OS X - Apple Support
or
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch not recognized in iTunes for Windows - Apple Support

OS 10.8.5 screens go black, audio stops, must hard reboot
So I have been having a really annoying problem the last few months. I'm running OS 10.8.5. My issue: screens go black, audio stops, must hard reboot...it happens at various times, but never while sitting at my machine, UNLESS viewing video in fullscreen as noted below.
Today while watching VLC fullscreen it repeated this behavior three times in a row within 90 minutes.
While watching in fullscreen and rendering in FCP - the video stops playing followed by the audio a few seconds later.
I thought I had fixed the problem sometime ago by turning off my screen saver, but apparently that was not the solution.
My specs:
Model Name: Mac Pro
Model Identifier: MacPro3,1
Boot ROM Version: MP31.006C.B05
SMC Version (system): 1.25f4
DEVICES (from system profiler):
After Effects 11.0.2
Premiere Pro 6.0
ProcasterAudioredirector
Blackmagic Audio
Blackmagic Audio
ATI Radeon HD 3870 x2
Blackmagic Intensity Pro
2 RAID controllers
I have been watching my console log and captured all messages between reboots.
The messages I think are resposible are as follows, they always appear in the console just before hard reboots are required to get the system back up:
coreaudiod[338]: Enabled automatic stack shots because audio IO is inactive
coreaudiod[338]: Disabled automatic stack shots because audio IO is active
1PasswordAgent[493]: [HYBI] socketDidDisconnect: Error Domain=GCDAsyncSocketErrorDomain Code=7 "Socket closed by remote peer" UserInfo=0x1035168c0 {NSLocalizedDescription=Socket closed by remote peer}
I am thinking it has to do with a conflict between the Blackmagic audio and system audio...but I am not sure.
I am hoping someone here can help me troubleshoot. Here are the console messages between reboots (this log is for a single reboot):

After spending some time trying to solve this problem, I found an application called Chapter Maker in the App Store. It is reasonably priced and once you have turned your podcast sent to iTunes into a movie by opening it in QuickTime, you can either just show it through QuickTime on your desktop or laptop computer, or if you want it to work in iTunes the way it used to work, you can send it from QuickTime to iMove (go to file/Export to... iMovie) where you can then export it as a movie to your desktop and open in Chapter Maker where you can add the chapter headings back in to the podcast and Export it. You can then add it back into the movie folder in iTunes where you can see the visuals in full screen and navigate through the chapters quickly.
I also tried this out by connecting my iPad to my computer and moving the movie into my iPad. While it doesn't have the chapters visible to navigate quickly to a chapter heading, you can touch the play screen and drag it to the places you need to review. Not as nice as the old iOS version, but it also does show the visual screen using the full screen of the iPad.
As I mentioned earlier, on my older iPod, I am able to view the visuals in full screen and by touching the list at the top right, it turns over to navigate through chapters with clearly labeled headings.
I use this to study topics for myself and also to pass on information to students.
I do wish they had kept the old version the way it was, but guess that's the way things go.
Check out the application in the App Store called Chapter Maker if you are looking for the same solution to this problem. Even if you aren't, it's an easy way to add sections to any video. -
A friend said she downloaded an update to Firefox (a version of 6, I believe) but didn't install the update, but the desktop icon was gone. The only way to launch Firefox was from the Programs folder. When clicking on the Firefox file, a "Setup" pop up window appeared stating "Your computer must be restarted to complete a previous upgrade of Firefox. Do you want to reboot now?" Clicking "No" does not launch Firefox and clicking "Yes" reboots the computer, but nothing changes after restart and the same series of events keeps re-occurring. When clicking on the safe mode file, Firefox was launched. I went to "Add/Remove Programs" and found Mozilla Firefox 3.6.3. When attempting to remove the program, the same reboot "Setup" pop up appears, and the same non-results as previously described, persisted. I deleted all Firefox files and deleted the update set up .exe files. I again tried to remove the Firefox 3.6.3 program, with the same outcome as the previous attempt(s). I went to the Firefox website and downloaded the updated Firefox 7.0.1 set up .exe file, saved and ran it. When I reached the Setup Wizard page that prompts a "Standard" or "Custom" installation, I clicked on Standard and the same reboot pop up window appeared, again with no change after the reboot. So I have a Program installed (Firefox 3.6.3) with no files, and which can not be removed, an executed update/download .exe for Firefox 7.0.1 that can not be completely installed due to the failure to update by reboot problem. I'm out of ideas on how to try to resolve these problems. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you
Try a clean reinstall.
* Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
* Firefox 7.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
* Uninstall your current Firefox version.
* Do not remove personal data when you uninstall the current version or you lose your bookmarks and other data in the profile folder.
* Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
* It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.
