Exposé slow?

For some reason on my Mac Pro activating Exposé - all windows tends to result in animation which appears rough, jagged and slow. However, if I do it a few times or if I hold shift it goes back to being smooth and uniform like it was in 10.5. Is this a problem with Nvidia drivers? My Air uses Intel graphics and does not experience the same thing as far as I can tell.
In addition, there is also an initial delay from pressing the key until I see any movement of the windows. Opening certain apps like NetNewsWire tend to make the delay longer. This appears only to happen under the 32 bit kernel.
I am not experiencing both of these at the same time; either one or the other. Is anyone else having an issue like this? I did a clean install and then ran the migration assistant under an admin account. I am currently running with the 64 bit kernel enabled and am having the laggy exposé problem, and it persists across user accounts.

Well, at least it's not just me. The problem that occurs in 32 bit kernel mode appears to be related to the amount of minimized windows you have. The more you have, the longer it will take for exposé to render. My machine is pretty much top of the line and this is definitely not expected behavior.

  • SLOW macbook white - exposé, dock, dashboard, everything!

I've always been wondering why my mac gets relatively slower than I expected. It has 512 MB of ram, and recently I've been thinking whether I should get a 1 GB chip to replace one of my built-in 256's.
I've read these claims from apple that it's supposed to run like 5x faster than the ibook or powerbook. But I have this feeling that my friend's older powerbook runs even faster on the same amount of ram. I'm the type of person who likes opening a large number of programs at the same time, and that just doesn't work with my macbook right now.
I especially hate how the dock's magnification feature gets too slow sometimes. Exposé and the dashboard also work slower than usual at times. Another major problem is Microsoft Office, which I understand is still running under Rosetta. I've also tried using Adobe CS2, but it was simply impossible so I had to uninstall it. Right now I'm using Chocoflop, a universal freeware version of photoshop.
Do you think upgrading to 1.25 GB would solve all of these problems? It will cost me a lot, so I'd like to try out any other possibilities for now.

    Ditto!!
The reason I bought a macbook in the first place was because everyone who owns a mac raves about the speed and ease of use and the fact that you can open lots of programs and keep them open.
This macbook has slowed down, frozen, restarted and generally caused me more frustration and hasel in the 2 weeks that I have owned it than my poor quality Dell laptop ever did.
A waste of money buying the mac??? I really hope not!
It makes me extremely grumpy to think that I now need to spend extra money to upgrade a brand new product only to get it to run like it should!

  • Snow is Slow: Any Quartz Animation : Exposé, Dock, Spaces

I am documenting a problem with Snow Leopard.
I installed Snow Leopard the Friday Morning it was released.
Immediately experiencing a weird anomaly in the transitions when using the F11 reveal windows Exposé—I was shocked! The first time I used it, there was a half-zoom out. Meaning that it jumped to half zoom then to reveal the complete desktop. I did it again and a different and worse resulted resulted.
Then, this stuttering pattern happened when I switched to spaces.
I was immediately depressed because of this very un-like Mac behavior.
At this point I went into an extreme analysis of this issue.
Beginning with checking the behavior in an alternate user profile. (This profile worked ok initially, but failed after much testing.)
    Removing all auto-start items.
    Starting in safe mode
Pulling various .plist's at the user level, the library level and the system level.
Setting up various combinations of programs.
Setting up various combinations of windows.
    Many reboots in various configurations.
Reading may system logs and referencing for various corresponding messages in multiple logs.
Here is what I have found:
When there are a certain number or windows open, <or>
a Windows with a certain density of information (eg. a busy Safari window, vs. four empty finder windows. Then Snow Leopard begins to get very choppy in its execution of the 'sliding transition' effect.
This effect extends to all Exposé transitions, spaces transitions and dock ballooning at the extreme ends of either side
Zooming can also be a bit choppy, but there has to be many windows open.
I can successfully replicate this behavior to precisely how many windows are open. I can visually see the expected smoothness with three finder windows & one Activity Monitor. If I add a fourth finder window the transitions fall apart and become very choppy.
    * Further, I can comfortably identify the problem as a conflict between the "Finder" & "WindowServer" When this choppy behavior is experienced, the WindowServer subsystem jumps it a minimum of 50% CPU consistently, with a maximum of about 80%.
---> When "Finder" is eliminated (request the program to quit) then all poor transition performance disappears. This too can be consistently replicated.
    * In summary, on some Macs with certain video drivers, there is an issue with transition performance. This is directly causable by setting up a certain number of open windows. And this result is due to some (unknown to me) conflict between the 'Finder" and 'WindowServer."
Certain logs reflect that finder is interrupting WindowServer under certain conditions.
Note: I have noticed several posts of complaints to various issues that all seem to center around this issue. And the help responses are always; zapping pram, running out of disk space, running too low on ram, too many processes running, running incompatible programs. --- This advice is misguided.
ps: Snow Leopard is otherwise very slick and much faster.

    File Vaulted Main Profile.

    Hi,
I just tried to replicate your issue on my Mac Mini 2,1 (1.83GHz C2D, stock 1GB, GMA 950 64MB shared) machine (which acts as a server for my 2 x AppleTV 160GBs and is constantly on 24/7) and the animations were smooth using (fn) f11 and the Expose (f3) button. No stuttering.
I had iTunes (movie page with 682 files in it all with cover art), Safari (default Apple start up page) and 3 finder windows open (Mac HD + 2 1TB USB externals). Seemed fine to me.
I also tried on my Rev A MacBook Air which has the GMA- X3100 graphics, and it too was smooth with no stuttering. (Snow Leopard runs really well on my little Air, so much quicker).
I can only suggest it's something else on your system which is causing the issue. I see from your system specs you have 4GB RAM installed. Your Mac Mini is the same 2,1 as my machine only with the faster CPU and larger hard drive. I read the Apple Tech Specs and the Mac Mini only supports up to 2GB RAM (presumably chipset restricted).
    See here: http://support.apple.com/kb/SP7
Perhaps the additional 2GB RAM installed is causing a conflict?

  • Why is copying to AppleTV so slow?

Just got an AppleTV about a month ago (which now I realize was stupid because it means there will no doubt be a better/faster/stronger one at Macworld Expo, but oh well). I also bought a new Airport Extreme-N.
    1) It takes me 7.5 minutes to copy a 218mb file from my iMac to the AppleTV over an 802.11n network (5Ghz) where the iMac and AppleTV are the only devices on that network.
    2) It takes 5.0 minutes to copy the same file from my iMac to my Powerbook over an 802.11g network (2.4Ghz).
Why is N slower than G?
(Didn't know whether to post this here or in the Airport Forum, but assumed most folks here were familiar with Airport issues. Both networks are exclusive, so there are no non-N devices on the N network.)

In addition to the comments others have posted (2.4GHz is better than 5GHz and also watch for other devices or networks using the same channel you're using.), what type of 802.11n router do you have?
I ask because Apple's own Airport Extreme (the new ones that can do 802.11n) have a mode where they can be dedicated to 802.11n only, vs. a mode in which they support 802.11n but can 'fallback' to support clients at 802.11g/b. Turns out the 'dedicated' mode is significantly faster.
If your router has such a mode and you don't have any devices that still require 802.11g/b then I'd suggest giving that a try.
My own AppleTV is linked using physical network cable, but I've upgraded my network to gigabit. This had a huge impact on how fast I can sync my iTunes libraries and Apple TV.

  • Redefining default keyboard shortcuts for dashboard, exposé, etc.

    Hi,
I would like to redefine the keyboard shortcuts for the Dashboard, Dock, and Exposé functions, i.e. I don't want these functions to be bound to the f8-f11 keys. I can redefine the shortcuts manually using the Keyboard pane of the System Preferences, but there are two problems. The first is that the shortcuts for these four items are reset whenever the computer is restarted (my changes to the other keyboard shortcuts are maintained). Is there a way to permenantly change these shortcuts? The second problem is that I am not able to change the keyboard shortcuts for the "slow" versions of these shortcuts accessed by using the shift key.
Basically, I want to be able to use f8-f11 and shift + f8-f11 as keyboard shortcuts in other applications. I'd like to assign the Dashboard, Dock, and Exposé commands to be command + f8-f11 and shift + command + f8-f11.
    Thanks.
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.1)

Does it hold if you change in the Dashboard&Exposé preference pane? You should be able to at least set the Cmd+F#, not sure if it will work for the slow open.
For more direct control, see this site
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/tips/remapfunctionkeys.html
The Powerbook is more limited in that it doesn't have the F13,F14,F15 keys, but editing the com.apple.symbolichotkeys.plist will give you direct control of the hotkey assignments.

  • Bridge CS 5.1 too slow to be usable

    Hi everyone,
I'm on a Mac Book Pro (2.8 GHz Intel Core Duo + 4 GB DDR3) and when I upgraded from CS5 to CS5.5, I realized that my new Bridge (5.1) was really full of issues... I click on buttons, and nothing happen (then 2 minutes later, it finally happens). The interface itself starts to get messy if I try to re-organize my windows... Like a graphic card issue, except my Mac works damn well with every other softwares.
So for a while, I just kept using the previous Bridge version that was still on my computer...
But recently, I changed my hard drive for a SSD and I re-installed all my softwares...
So now, I only have Bridge 5.1... And again, it is completly un-usable, even after this fresh new instal...
I may go to CS6 very soon... But in the mean time, I'd like this software to work... Any idea of what is going on?

Hi everyone, first thanks for helping...
My SSD is 256GB and it still has 128GB of free space for now... So I don't think this is my issue.
Then I tried the the reset thing (good tip, I didn't know about that), but it's still the same. I didn't try the virus scanning, because I'm on a Mac and don't have one installed. I just let the OS dealing with it.
I think it's a graphic issue. Whenever I clic onto a folder, inside of Bridge, it's like nothing happens, execpt I can see that the name dispayed onto of the app window changes. So Bridge DID actually get me into that folder, but the graphic interface doesn't show it.
If I use Exposé or Space then the change does appears.
So everytime I move into another folder, I drag my mouse to one corner of my screen to activate Exposé, then come back and here I am in the new folder.
But this trick doesn't work for preview. My preview window allows me to play sound from video files, but wont display any image for it (like if it was sound only files). Still images (jpeg, psd...) wont show up as well.
So it is definitly a graphic problem. The softaware is not slow, like I though at first, it just don't reflect what's going on on the interface.
When I click "about this Mac" to get info on my graphic card it reads:
    NVIDIA GeForce 9400M
    NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
Why do I have 2 of them? No idea... But I see guys online that have the same in their Mac...
I'm not sure to understand if I can or cannot update graphic card drivers for Mac... Usualy the only upgrades I need are coming from Apple, and my Snow Leopard is fully up to date...

  • Slow GUI after Leopard installation

    Hi!
I have a 17-inch Macbook Pro with 2,4ghz CPU, 2GB ram and hi-res monitor. Everything was very quick and reponsive in Tiger, but after doing an archive & install of Leopard (with settings kept) the GUI is very slow. Dashboard, the dock, minimizing windows (genie effect) is very sluggish (looks like it is not 3d accelerated) although the computer is not working with anything (according to Activity monitor/top). I have no third party software running and I tried doing a fresh install with the problem still there. Exposé seems to be running like it should do, but Dashboard, Dock and minimizing things are affected. It is very obvious while holding down shift key at the same time as minimizing a window with genie effect - it is anything but smooth! Looks much better on a PowerBook G4 667mhz with Tiger.
I also get less FPS in games like Quake III or Urban Terror. On Tiger it was around 90 FPS all the time, now it is around 50.
Are there updated graphics drivers on the way or any other solution to the problem?
    Thanks
    Jacob

Try putting these numbers in Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers, for the Interface you connect with...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    Then Apply. For 10.5/10.6 Network, highlight Interface>Advanced button>DNS tab>little + icon.
DNS Servers are a bit like Phone books where you look up a name and it gives you the phone number, in our case, you put in apple.com and it comes back with 17.149.160.49 behind the scenes.
These Servers have been patched to guard against DNS poisoning, and are faster/more reliable than most ISP's DNS Servers.

  • Exposé Kernel Panic

I'm on an older Macbook Pro (ultimo 2008), right on the edge of what Yosemite can run on, and I'm having recurrent kernel panics when using Exposé, mostly in Safari (because that's the program in which I most commonly have multiple windows open).
The issue seems to be getting worse; I've had three just today - by contrast, I might have had three panics *alltogether*, if that, on this machine before Yose, including Mavericks (which sucked in so many other ways that Yosemite actually seems to have mostly fixed).
Of course I can just stop using Exposé, though since that was the last really great feature introduced on OS X for actual computers before it became an afterthought behind the mobile version, and I find it super-useful, I'd like to have use of it.
As a side note, I actually suspect this may have something to do with the later OS'es having been designed for the kind of graphics handling that happens on an iPad or iPhone, and is ill suited for the very different and much more demanding screen work happening on a real computer - this suspicion predates these kernel panics (which only started happening these last few weeks, and I've been running Yose since it came out) and is based on my experience that many things involving the windowserver process (that would be most things, actually) seem buggy and unstable.
As another side note, this shouldn't have much to do with the fact that my machine is old - sure, that might cause everything to slow down, or even not work, but as far as I know a kernel panic is a pretty bad thing that goes beyond simply having performance issues.
Anyone else seeing this problem, or - pray tell - have any idea how one might alleviate it?

    Hey Joe,
Thanks - I actually already read that article and find it unhelpful, mostly because it puts the crux of the problem on the user. Basically, it says "nothing could be wrong with our software so you probably installed something you shouldn't have, and also here's 40 hours of tech homework for you (that probably won't help)".
Also, it refers to Mavericks, which I mention for two reasons: One, that "help with the specific application causing trouble" thing has apparently been removed again as of Yosemite (so that's no help) and two, the issue I describe didn't actually happen in Mavs, for all its other glaring shortcomings.
If I'm being honest I didn't expect anyone to hand me a solution - though hope springs eternal! - but rather to bring the issue to attention; after all, anything at all that might cause a kernel panic by using a central part of the system (a function which, by the way, has worked flawlessly since it was introduced) deserves to be mentioned, be it eversomuch "the fault of a 3rd party app/plugin/kext".

  • Response time problems, slow excel execution with new ibook

Hello: I'm a first time ibook user (long time pc user). I have had my ibook for less than 1 month. It's sometimes very slow. I can understand a slow response when I'm accessing a website, but I don't understand why I often experience a 5-15 second delay when I'm in excel and I click on "file" or "format". (I very often get the whirly multicolored pinwheel.)
I have also had to do a "force quit" a number of times to stop an unresponsive excel model or firefox application.
I'm also very disappointed in the excel performance. I run very large excel models some of which take a minute or more to recalc on our hp pavillion pc. My new ibook, however, doesn't run these modes any faster than my 2-3 year old pc. I haven't upgraded from the standard memory and I don't know how much that would help.
Anyone have any suggestions to offer?
    Mikecupertino

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I have had my ibook for less than 1 month.
If this is the case, then you qualify to get the next version of Microsoft Office, version 2008 for free (besides shipping). Check out this Microsoft site:
    http://www.microsoft.com/mac/go/promotions/supersuitedeal/
Next week there are bound to be several new announcements from all sorts of Mac-related companies at the Macworld Expo in San Francisco. Microsoft is releasing their next version of Office for the Mac next week too. This version will run natively on an Intel-based Mac. Right now, Office is running in Apple's "Rosetta" technology which emulates the older, PowerPC processors. This allows you to run applications that haven't been updated yet, but it does slow down performance and increase hardware requirements. I think you should see better performance with the updated version. (Although, there may be a few bugs to work out with the brand new version, so keep check on updates!)

  • No animation in Exposé

The is some mention of this here http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10216066&#10216066 but the main thread is about slugish animation and there are a few issues going on there so I'll start a new post:
After the machine's been up for a while, F9 exposé stops its animated transition for windows to their position on the grid; they just jump there immediately. Push F9 again to return and they do transition back smoothly as they should. This issue doesn't affect dock exposé, F10, or F9 during F8, and even F9 works perfectly in slow motion when holding down shift.
Kill the Dock to restart it and normality returns for a while. This seems like a resource leak to me.

    HI,
Download and install the 10.6.1 combo update. As with any update, make sure and back up all important data first.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL930
After the installation, repair disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • Tiling WM with Compiz/Scale/Exposé

    Hi!
Is there a tiling window manager which has a function where all windows are presented like the scale function of Compiz or like Exposé on the Mac or maybe something similar to gnome-shell?
I would love to combine this stuff. Please answer if you know something.
    Thanks,

There is also cairo-compmgr (in AUR ), I've tried it with stumpwm and does work, but very slow... I don't know if it could be a graphics card problem though...

  • Genie effect and Exposé on my iMac G5

    Hi there,
well, this topic comes after several days of testing, thinking, testing...
    so...
Why does the OS X genie effect isn't smooth on my iMac? I mean, it has a Radeon 9600 Pro 128MB, which it's quite better than the Geforce FX 5200 64MB I had on my previous PowerMac G5 (dual 1.8GHz Rev.A), there must be something mysterious I don't know about videocards...
My iMac is already set to "maximum performance" but the genie effect isn't as smooth as it was on my PowerMac G5. If I set to "automatic" the dock animation runs at 1/2 framerate as it should.
I guess these sort of FX are not related (not directly at least...) to CPU speed...aren't them?
I've had bad experiences with the dock animation too... one day I discovered it was not as smooth as before, than I discovered that if the OS X desktop gets crowded with icons, you loose some smoothness in the GUI, I guess it's strange, but GUI smoothness came back when I decided to move all the stuff inside ONE folder (still on the desktop).
Now...the desktop isn't crowded anymore, but genie effect and exposè aren't as smooth as they should be, it's far from being smooth, even with one little window.
    any advice?
(I've just tried ATIcellerator, but it doesn't change anything even at +33% overclock...RAM/CORE, which is something I wouldn't recommend on an iMac)

Defragging your drive will do nothing, as Tiger automatically defraggs itself on the fly.
I noticed a significant difference in the performance of Expose if I had multiple windows open up at a time - even if it was nothing more than several Safari windows. My guess is that performance depends on memory load.
One other thing I noticed was that litlle things like that would slow down if I left apps open, particularly Safari. If I closed all apps, then reopened them - without rebooting - performance was much better.

  • Safari 5.1 too slow to print tab content?

Since Safari 5.1 I do have a problem with the JavaScript function window.print() in new tabs
    For instance:
    win = window.open();
    win.blur();
    self.focus();
    win.document.open();
    win.document.write('<html><head><meta charset="UTF-8"><title>test</title>');
    win.document.write('</head><body id="print">some content here</body></html>')
    win.document.close();
    win.print();
    win.close();
This code opens a new tab and the Safari print popup but without any content. Safari even generates multiple pages when the content requires more pages. But all pages are blank.
First I thought my print stylesheet isn't compatible with the new webkit engine or something like that.
But it turns out Safari is too slow with the .print() function and already closed the tab before the content could be rendered.
So I fixed it by setting a timeout
    setTimeout(function() {win.close(); }, 1000);
Is there any chance that this problem could be fixed in general?

  • Application running slow in ver 1.5, 1.6 but not in 1.4

We have a application that was running very slow when we used any version sun java instead of MS java in IE6 SP2.
I removed MS Java from IE and installed Sun java 1.4.2_16 and the applications starts in under 10sec's.
But we had to test the other version of java as well, i then installed the other versions from 1.5 update 14 to 1.6 update 4 and the application takes about 30 to 40 sec to load the web page.
I then looked at the development version of java 1.6 update 10 and version 7. In 1.6 update 10 the application would load but would not refresh the applets it would just hang. In version 7 the application would not start up at all.
In all the versions i increased the memory parmeters from 128 to 256 and in version 1.6 i changed it to -Xmx300m as well but still the application was slow loading. Removed all the versions and reinstalled 1.4.2_14 and the application works fine and loads up under 10 sec.
Does any one have any idea why this is happening.
    IE 6 sp2
    XP sp2 been used.

You should try profiling the startup code.
As a first go around, you might try getting a stack trace during the startup process and look for locks (see jstack).
If your application is built on Swing, it's my understanding that the later versions of Java are more strict about use of the Event Dispatch Thread--pay particular attention to activity off the EDT locking the thread.

  • Mid 2011 Macbook Air Painfully slow.

Mid 2011 Macbook Air Painfully slow.
Hey everyone.  I am writing about my 13 inch Mid 2011 Macbook Air.
Recently it has been extremely slow and on occasion has not started up.
I have reset the PRAM and SMC already, yet it is still very slow.  I have a couple theories about what might have caused it, are they plausible?
Theory 1:  It’s a software problem. I tried to upgrade to 10.8.2 but halfway through the upgrade the computer restarted and somehow I was still on 10.8.1.  For fear of a big issue happening I didn’t try to upgrade again. Perhaps it is a flaw in Apple’s software update?
The important thing to note about this update is that I tried to install 10.8.2 around a month or two weeks BEFORE I started having problems.  So if these issues were due to 10.8.2’s failed update then it certainly was a delayed reaction.
I would of course like to update to 10.8.2 BUT as my computer is acting EXTREMELY slow and having trouble turning on occasionally I am worried the software update will completely brick the machine.  Is that possible?  Should I actually finish through with the software update?
Theory 2:  It was an electricity problem.
The computer died when I was sitting at a café plugged into their wall sockets.  A few days later when I came back to the same spot with my old macbook which is now being used in lieu of the Air it suddenly turned black for a little while. Sensing it might be an electricity surge or something with their system I unplugged the cable.  I am not sure if that was paranoia though.
Can an electricity surge or a bad outlet fry a computer?  Can it fry the ram so the computer is extremely slow? Does that theory hold any water?
Thanks for your help diagnosing this problem.
    All the best.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Copy or drag — do not type — the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.) You can omit the final line ending in “$”.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|edu\.mit|org\.(amavis|apache|cups|isc|ntp|postfix|x)/{print $3}'
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|edu\.mit|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'
    Step 4
    ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' 2> /dev/null
Remember, steps 1-5 are all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.
