Exposé & Spaces in Lion

There is a problem with Exposé in Lion, that wasn't a problem back in Snow Leopard:
1. Create multiple spaces ("multiple desktops") in Lion.
2. Launch Safari.
3. Open up a bunch of different windows in Safari.
4. Move some of those Safari windows into one space ("desktop"), move some of the Safari windows into another space ("desktop"), and move some of the Safari windows into another space ("desktop").
5. Now, go into Safari in one of your spaces ("desktops") and trigger the Exposé function for showing "Application Windows".  By default, this is F10.
6. Here's the problem: Lion will show you ALL OF THE WINDOWS for that application, EVEN IF the windows are located in OTHER SPACES. This makes it extremely difficult to work within one space. In Snow Leopard, Exposé only showed you the application windows for the CURRENT SPACE.
7. Is there any way to fix this, or a preference to toggle this behavior?
Thanks,
Scott

In Lion Exposé, is really App Exposé.  It shows you all windows open for a particular app.
Mission Control, which is new in Lion (control-up arrow or three finger swipe), will give you (control-up arrow) gives you a brids eye view of everthing organized by desktop.

  • How do you add a program to a "Space" in Lion?

I can see how to add a space in Mission Control, but how do you assign a program to a Space within Lion?  It carried over my settings from Snow Leopard so there must be a way to change it or add to it.  Can anyone find the hidden Space's feature?

Right click on the application icon in the dock.  Select "Options" and then Choose to assign it to the particular space that you want (or to all or no spaces).
    Cheers,

  • System Preferences Exposé & Spaces Quit Unexpectedly

All other preferences work as normal.  (System Preferences > Exposé & Spaces) just shows "Loading Exposé and Spaces..." and nothing comes up.  If I select it again I get a Problem Report for System Preferences.  This menu function was accessed within the last week and was functioning as normal.  As far as this problem goes, I have repaired the disk permissions, cleared the caches at "~/Library/Caches" and the preferences at "~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist".  This removal of the plist hasn't reset the spaces or exposé to default -- they remain as were configured earlier this week.
Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
May or may not be related to the issue : (although I feel that this may have nothing to do with it)
This week had to take it to the Apple Store for a trackpad height adjust.  There also was a diagnostic (looked like some kind of os9 window) and they probably reset the pram.  Upon booting at home I had noticed that my settings for my home network were gone, and had to reconfigure.  Also a couple of 3rd party programs needed a reinstall.

Ya, I'd say it's likely something in your preferences folder. What you could try is quitting all your apps, moving all of the plist files to a new folder and testing it. If this fixes it then put those plists back 5 or 10 at a time until you've determined which file is casuing the problem.
This suggestion sounds in the right direction.  I will probably have to do that soon but I am a bit confused about "all of the plist files."  Would I do this to the entire ~/Library/Preferences?
I also used Pacifist to extract and install Expose.prefPane and I noticed something different for Expose.prefPane.  The Sharing & Permission under Get Info show:  username(Me) /Read & Write, staff / Read only, and everyone / Read only.  The other .prefPane files show: system / Read & Write, wheel / Read only, everyone / Read only.  This may or may not be at fault, but I am wondering if you or anyone else's /System/Library/PreferencePanes shows this to be standard.

  • How can i use my pictures for Mission Control Spaces in Lion?

How do I get a chosen selection of my own photos to be available for use as desktop pictures, with a different one for each Space in Mission Control in Lion?
I have a new Macbook Air, Thunderbolt display and Lion.

As long as your Office for Mac is 2011, you will have no problems using the programs.  If it is the Office for Mac 2008 version, there have been some mixed reviews.  2004 will not work at all.
I have the 2011 version and have not had any problems since upgrading to Lion.

  • How do you configure spaces in Lion?

OK, I've found most of what I need to configure Lion but I can't find the preference panel to change the 'all spaces' view to the old style (where you see all the spaces or desktops placed on the screen in equal sizes). The new default 'mission control' view isn't as useful to me. I also don't see where to assign apps to a specific space. Finally, how do you get at the 'spaces' option for a hot corner? Where has all this moved?

Obviously it's grown into the mission control feature... I don't care what the terms are now, I just want to know where the controls moved to.
    OK, let's try this:
How do you configure mission control to display spaces in the old tiled format? Or whatever you call spaces/desktops now. For example, the 6 spaces I was using are still there. Apps still open where they were set to (go migration assistant!). Where do you get at the settings for this stuff now?

  • Can't drag and drop files between spaces in lion osx

since upgrading to lion osx, i've noticed that i can't drag a pic, for example, from safari and drop it into a chat box in ichat.  used to drag pics, web addresses, text, etc across spaces all the time in snow leopard but i don't seem to be able to do it in lion.  does anyone else have this problem or am i missing something?

You have many issues with your and your wife's machine(s). Everything you've posted works here. Reinstall Snow Leopard, repair permissions, and see if that fixes things.

  • No dock, exposé, spaces, dashboard or wallpaper menu

I did a normal install (over my previous Tiger) and nothing strange happened...until the installation ended and the background was just a boring blue screen. I thought that was strange, so I moved my mouse over to the side to get in the dock and the system preferences...but there was no dock. I am able to access dock preferences, and it is not checked to auto hide. Also, whenever I change it from "dock on bottom," it doesn't save my setting and just resets back to bottom.
It's not just my dock, however. I can't load the Change Desktop Wallpaper menu in my Sys Prefs. It's just a blank grey menu with the Wallpaper and Screensaver tabs on top.
I'm also not able to access Dashboard, Exposé or Spaces. Their corresponding menus don't respond to changes I make.
These are the steps I have taken so far: I've reinstalled, this time with "Archive and Install," but it made a practically empty folder called "previous systems" and went ahead and installed itself over my previous operation system anyway. I deleted whatever com.apple.*.plists I could in the Preferences window. I don't have DivX installed, so I wasn't able to do the trick where you rename the folder in Application Support, and I rebooted more times than I can remember. I WAS able to get the wallpaper to change from blue to the default, but I still can't access the wallpaper menu in System Preferences.
I'd appreciate any help you can give me.

No, you shouldn't need to reformat. Run AHT (Apple Hardware Test):
    1. Disconnect all external devices from your iMac except the keyboard and mouse.
If you have an Ethernet cable connected, disconnect it.
    2. Insert the Mac OS X Install Disc 1 that came with your iMac.
    3. Restart your iMac and hold down the D key as your iMac starts up.
    4. When the Apple Hardware Test chooser screen appears, select the language
    appropriate for your location.
    5. Press the Return key or click the right arrow button.
    6. When the Apple Hardware Test main screen appears (after about 45 seconds), follow
    the onscreen instructions.
    7. Apple Hardware Test displays an error code if it detects a problem. Make a note of the error code before pursuing support options.

  • Can you create rows of "spaces" in Lion?

I'm about to update my OS to Lion but there's one thing keeping me from taking the plunge.  I use spaces very heavily and I rely on my 2x3 layout.  It's my understanding that lion keeps spaces (or I guess they're now called desktops or something) in a straight single file line.  Can i get my rows back?
    Thanks

I think I found a thread answering my own question.  This may seriously keep me from updating

    Which application?

  • How do I turn Exposé/Spaces off, without access to System Preferences because I disabled it's space?

I accidentally disabled a column of spaces where I had my System Preferences running, in "Exposé and Spaces".
Now I cannot access my System Preferences at all.
I can see System Preferences as a running application in the doc and command tabbing though running applications. I can also get to it this way and see the menu bar on the top of my screen and click through the menus and drop down menus, however I cannot see any windows.
I know that I can open different windows for if the System by selecting something in the drop down menus. Then I see the selected window if I click and hold down on the dock icon of the system preferences. However, as soon as I try to click on the window it disappears.
I know that my problem would be solved if I could turn off Spaces but how do I do this if   I cannot access it though System Preferences?

After a long struggle and research I found a solution.
I discovered Spaces exists in the Utilities folder in Applications.
When I opened the application from here it gave me the 3 spaces I had assigned, vertically displayed, with the system preference window sitting, outside and fairly large, hovering, partially infront of it all the other screens.  After several tries of grabbing and disappearing it finally let me drag and drop the window into one of the screen.
    I am really relieved now!!

  • How much space does Lion occupy?

Does anyone know how much memory is consumed by Lion?
Tech specs call for 7 GB free space. My earlier version imac has a max memory capacity of 8 GB. Should I consider Lion?
    Thanks,

    Hello iphoneapp,
Thank you for helping my last two brain cells synapse. I was confusing memory with hard drive capacity.
However, after reading the forum comments regarding Lion I think I will stay with Snow Leopard.

  • Wiping free space on Lion using Disk Utility Erase Free Space

    I'm using Lion (OS X 10.7.3) on a late 2011 MacBook Pro.
    FileVault is active.
I tried to erase free space on my HD using Disk Utility. It started by creating a temporary file and presented me with an indeterminate indicator-bar (one that looks like a barber pole). Activity Monitor showed an average CPU utilization of 2% by Disk Utility but disk activity was normal and usage stayed constant.
I left this process on for about twelve hours but Activity Monitor showed nothing new and the DU indicator-bar stayed indeterminate with Creating Temporary File.
I tried to skip this DU process and was presented with another indeterminate bar: Skipping. Again, AM showed nothing new so I force-quit DU and used sudo find / -type f -size +500M to see if any temporary files were created. I did not find any new files.
I rebooted and tried it from the terminal: sudo diskutil secureErase freespace 1 /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD. The result was the same: No progress.
BTW, if you run the above command, make sure you include the freespace portion. If you don't, diskutil will happily start securely erasing the entire disk.
Not being able to wipe free space using DU may have something to do with FileVault being active. Can someone confirm this?
What I love about working on a Mac is I have a Unix-based computer that I can tinker with. So I was able to wipe free space manually: dd if=/dev/urandom of=~/DELETEME followed by srm -s ~/DELETEME.
    Hope this helps someone.

Why we don't mention such terminal commands around here.

  • Finder, Exposé, Spaces etc- massive problem!

After coming home from school I discovered that my MacBook has decided not to automatically launch finder upon start up (having to click it in the dock), and exposé and spaces do not work (using the keys at the top of the keyboard and ctrl + +arrow key+ for spaces). One other thing I've noticed is that it does not automatically launch start up items.
After repairing the disk permissions and verifying the disk I restarted my system and found that I'm still having the problem, I'm not sure what else to try and don't want anything to go horribly wrong, I've never had any 'real' problem like this with my Mac before and it's quite upsetting.

Never mind I just fixed the problem by searching around the community and finding this thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4024312
Anyway it was as simple as holding down the application in the dock and just selecting "Options -> Assign to -> None (rather than All Desktops).

  • Available Space with Lion

With the Lion update, the available space bar at the bottom of finder is no longer visible, and you have to go into get info to see how much available space is left on the HD or on an external drive. Where did it go, and how do we get it back?

Go to View menu while in Finder and choose to show Path Bar and Status Bar:

  • Can I create my own iDisk spaces using Lion Server?

Using Lion Server, can I create a space that would be like iDisk for my users to save and access documents and files remotely? Also to make that shared between users? Basically make my own cloud space.

SSL Certificate is based on your domain, not the granularity of folders.  If you have a server named idisk.yourdomain.com and all users will access the same domain, than you need a cert for idisk.yourdomain.com.  If you plan to do multiple hosts within the same domain, such as idisk.yourdomain.com and clouddrive.yourdomain.com then look to get a wildcard cert.  If you are doing multiple domains, such as idisk.yourdomain.com and clouddisk.otherdomain.com then you need multiple certs.  One per domain.
As for access control, that is handled through folder structure and permissions.  Make two folders.  AllAccess and LimitedAcces.  You can make a group that contails users A, B, and C and make them part of a group.  That group can access the AllAccess folder.  Then make another group containing users A & B and then grant them access to the LimitedAccess folder.
