Exposure and colour differences when importing...

I'll try to be brief.
I shoot in NEF and upon import into LR I convert them to DNG's using the LR 'Zeroed' setting. I do expect a flat looking file but what I don't expect is a colour shift and such a flat looking file. Let me explain...
if I don't convert the NEF file to DNG and instead import it as a NEF with 'Zeroed' settings again, I retain more of the original capture exposure look along with colours that are more accurate. If I then take the imported NEF files and then convert them to DNG all seems well.
I don't understand what's going on here...can anyone help?
Thank you.
Paul

@Denis - yes thank you and yes I also realised that the topic of importing re dng is an often discussed topic.
I read the Jeff Schewe post some time ago but it does not address my question which is...
same image import NEF and get one colour and exposure view then take the SAME image and import but this time as DNG and get an entirely different looking image. Invariably, the NEF import looks better than straight to DNG and it is this that I am finding odd and frustrating all at the same time.

  • Identify, locate, and handle dupes when importing

As a DAM application, I think LR falls short. I thought there was no way they could leave out something so basic as clearly identifying duplicates when importing/building a library etc.
I'd like to know, even if it takes longer to create/load the images, if dupes exist (suspected/actual). I'd like to know where they're located, and ideally have an option to remove/quarantine/isolate those dupes.
Shouldn't this be a basic feature in any application designed to manage portfolios and digital assets? During the beta process, the premise was there that this would be a DAM application/front end, yet IMO it falls fall short.

    Thanks for the info.
Can you tell me where the info is hidden, because it doesn't discuss it in help, it isn't included in the pamphlet Adobe calls a manual, it doesn't work on my machines (tried 2 out of 3 so far) even when I know there are dupes in two different directories, and in short, something appears to be wrong.
I'm a little disappointed (in myself and Adobe) that I can't find what should be even a description of a very basic feature.
I have no idea why it isn't working, but it won't be the first crazy thing that doesn't work right in LR. I think Adobe cut corners, a lot of corners, on this so they could ship. They cleaned up the majority, but not all, of the bugs and shipped it so they could get the revenue.
Any helpful comments on how I can control/sort/identify the dupes would be appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Colour changes when importing Illustrator graphics into Flash CS3

    Hi there!
I'm creating a Flash site, and all the graphics are imported
    from Illustrator.
Also, in the Illustrator file, there are some Phtoshop
graphics with shadow effects on it.
The problem is, that when I import the .ai into Flash, a
pretty strong colour change occurs: everything becomes lighter. And
the shadow, wich is black in Photoshop, turns white in Flash!
Is there a way to solve this problem? I searched the net, and
some people say it's an OSX thing, wich is pretty strange, because
Mac is an obvious choice for loads of designers.
    I've attached an image preview.

    Thanks in advance!
    Alex

    Thanks for the anwsers!
However, the weird thing is, when I pick one of the photoshop
graphics, asign the profile to it, and import it into Flash, the
colors look fairly good. BUT when I import the complete Illustrator
file with alle the graphics in it, I still get the color shift. I
can now put all the graphics in the flash file, one at a time, but
I think thats not the most easy way to do it..

  • What happens to ratings and colour codes when Aperture is reinstalled?

My iMac has developed all sorts of faults and I think it's time to clean up, wipe the hard drive and reinstall the operating system and apps. My Aperture library is quite large and the photos have all been painstakingly categorised using the colour codes within aperture. I copy the Aperture library to an external hard drive but will I lose all my colour codes, metadata and stuff? I'm sort-of hoping that the newly reinstalled Aperture will import all my photos with all the ratings, album structure and stuff.
    Any ideas or advice?

    Thatblokeoverthere wrote:
Thanks. This is a great start. So, if I move my entire Aperture library to an external drive and then move it back to the iMac hard drive, the new installation should set it all up exactly as before?
As long as the originals in the library are managed, that is located in the library, and not referenced then yes that is all you will need to do. When you have everything set to go the easiest way to have Aperture open this library is to double click on the library, this will cause Aperture to open it and make it the default library.
However as Léonie has alluded to this may not clear up the problems you are having. What is the model of the Mac you are using, how much memory is installed and how big is and how much free space is there on your system drive and what OS version are you running?
Perhaps there are less drastic measures you can take to clear up the problems.

  • Colour differences when copying

I work on a Mac and I just updated from Illustrator CS5 to Illustrator CS6 and I'm noticing a weird problem. I have a file that I created in CS5 that when I copy the artwork to a new file in CS6, the colours are totally different.
I have checked my preferences against those of a co-worker that still has CS5, and as far as I can tell, everything is the same!
I've attached a set of screenshots (below), using a file created in CS5 (bottom image), and what it looks like when it is copied into a new file (top image).
Anyone have any idea why this is happening and what I can do to fix it? My client isn't going to be too pleased with my current results!
    Thanks in advance!

Yes, I've been reading that. It also gives me instructions on how to replace my current colour books with older ones, but I'm a bit stuck... It is having me go find my document profiles by going to [user]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe Illustrator CS6/[lang]/New Document Profiles... Problem is that I don't have the "Adobe Illustrator CS6" folder.
This is the same with the other CS6 Mac in my office. Google is providing no results... Any ideas?

  • Designer 6 and 7 : problem when importing curved lines

    Hello,
I am actually working on a project in which we want to reuse PDFs that have been created with curved line as borders.
The problem is that when we import the PDFs in the designer (6 or 7), we get a message saying that over 300 curved object are not correctly imported...
How can we find a turnaround for this problem ???
    Nicolas

Corrupted files. There could be lots of reasons: camera failing, card failing, card reader failing, cable from card reader or camera to storage device failing.
Try swapping out pieces of the chain one at a time: different card, different reader, cable, etc. Do you still have the card with the corrupt files? Since the problem occurred on two computers and your field storage device, I'd guess that card, card reader, camera, or cable is faulty.

  • Joint stereo vs. Normal stereo...whats the difference when importing a CD?

I used to import my cd's at 192kbps and the default setting was normal stereo, but now I do it at 256kbps and the default is joint stereo...whats the difference? Since it defaults to joint at 256, should i keep it there? Thanks!
    Message was edited by: noisexcore

In audio encoding, "joint stereo" takes advantage of the fact that the two stereo channels are well-correlated to each other, and uses that fact to capture the audio information more efficiently. "Normal stereo" treats the two tracks independently.
If it is done right, joint stereo does offer an advantage in fidelity at a given bit rate, but there is a lot of folklore about whether various implementations really do it right. I can't say for sure what goes on in the Apple implementation, but unless you are noticing a perceptible difference, my inclination would be to go with the defaults.

  • Why does my footage Slow down and loose audio when imported to after effects cs6?

Whenever I import video of any kind into after effects, it slows down and looses audio. It happens for every video. The weird thing is, it seems like it doesnt happen to anyone else on the internet. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME PLEASE!!!! I am about to cry. I cant do anything with this stupid software! If there is a solution please tell me. Its really annoying.
    extra info-
    On Mac
    mov. Files
    H.264 codec

Slows down when? When you preview? Do you know how to preview?
If you are pressing the space bar to preview the video then the behavior you are seeing is normal. AE will not playback in real time with autio unless you do a ram preview (look it up). You must learn to use the software.

  • Adobe organizer hangs and does respond when importing files for the first time?Adobe organizer hangs and does respond when importing files for the first time?

Help!!  This is crazy. Organizer stops at 17% and freezes.  I can't import my iPhoto or picture files. Help please!

For reference: The computer as configured just like the other systems we have...from executing the file to lockup is about 17 seconds...then about 3 minutes of lockup time before it finishes loading.
With the Antivirus/firewall completely disabled,...from executing to lockup is about 10 seconds, then lockup is about 45 seconds. (But it still happens)
With Antivirus/firewall on and Escript.api removed from the plugins folder, No delay, 2 seconds to the file load (but then without the editable fields)

  • Dynamic Link between Premiere Pro and Premier Pro when importing sequences?

Let me explain what we're trying to do. In our office we have one gentleman who edits together multiple program segments for a broadcast television show we do. He creates a new project and sequence for each because we upload the segments separately for the web. My job is to edit together the entire show for television. So what I do is I import his sequences to PP. The reason I do a sequence instead of a rendered video is for I can go in an make any corrections. But if I do make corrections it only makes the corrections on my project and not the original project/sequence I imported. I would like for the changes to also appear on on the original.  Is there away to do this? I know this works for Adobe After Affects, Adobe Photoshop and now SpeedGrade using Dynamic Link, but is there a way to do something similar between Premiere Pro projects or sequences? Thank you

To my knowledge there is no way to use Dynamic Link between PP on two different machines. The DL is for using PP on a single machine such as importing AE comps, PSD files, etc.
I understand what you are trying to do and it sounds like Adobe Anywhere would be what you would need. Editor "1" can make a project and edit a sequence...editor "2" can access the same project and sequence, make changes, and it will update back on editor "2" machine.
To do what you want without Adobe anywhere, and still retain the original sequence you might want to try this.
After you import the project file/sequences from the other editor, make your chances, master cut(s). Then have the other editor import your updated sequences.

  • Sales analysis report differences when run by Sales Empl as opposed to Item

My client is running Sales analysis report and notices differences when run by Sales Employee as opposed to by Item.
    I explained that:
When run by item, the report does not include service type invoices or non-inventory items.
When run by sales employee it DOES include service type invoices and non-inventory items.
Are there any other differences I should be aware of?
Does someone have a query I can run to prove this difference i.e...invoices for non-inventory items for a period? To prove where the difference comes from between the two reports?
    Thanks

    You may try this first:
    SELECT S.ItemCode,
    MAX(S.Description) as 'Item Description',
    SUM(S.LineTotal) as 'Amount(LC)'
    FROM
    (SELECT T1.ItemCode AS 'ItemCode',

    T1.LineTotal AS 'LineTotal'
    FROM dbo.OINV T0
    INNER JOIN dbo.INV1 T1 ON T1.DocENtry = T0.DocENtry
    WHERE T0.docdate >= [%0] and T0.docdate <= [%1]
    AND T0.doctype = 'I'
    UNION
    SELECT T1.ItemCode AS 'ItemCode',
    T1.Dscription AS 'Description',
    -T1.LineTotal AS 'LineTotal'
    FROM dbo.ORIN T0
    INNER JOIN dbo.RIN1 T1 ON T1.DocENtry = T0.DocENtry
    WHERE T0.docdate >= [%0] and T0.docdate <= [%1]
    AND T0.doctype = 'I') S
    GROUP BY S.ItemCode
This is by item type transaction only.

  • CS3 and lightroom raw converters change colour of  5D files when importing.

The problem is that lightroom and CS3 systematically go through raw 5D..CR2 photos and change colours, even when set to "as shot". I think part of the problem is that i upped the saturation in camera, and the raw converters have been stripping this away to desaturate colours... but in doing this they have taken too much away and left photos very desaturated and looking nothing like colours that were actually there.
I have taken some with all settings on camera default, yet still there is a slight but noticable shift in colour.
anyone shed any light on this, or had similar experience.
    Ali.
P.s. Using vista, but same on windows XP.

    >I think part of the problem is that i upped the saturation in camera, and the raw converters have been stripping this away to desaturate colours
The main problem is that you don't understand what a raw file is...the ONLY raw converter that can read settings set on the camera (other than exposure and ISO) are those that use the camera SDKin your case, DPP. A raw file has no real rendering and the raw converter must give it one. What you are seeing change is the difference between the Canon SDK and the Camera Raw default. And note that the Camera Raw "default" is just that, a default rendering. If you don't like it, you can change it and make the changes based on camera serial number and capture ISO as well.
What you need to do is forget the camera settings (except exposure and ISO) and concentrate on learning how to use Camera Raw to get the renderings you want...

  • When importing images into LR5 on my laptop, the photos all have a wide yellow streak through them. This only happens on the laptop; I can import the images onto my desktop LR and there isn't the streak of colour.   Can someone help?

When importing images into LR5 on my laptop, the photos all have a wide yellow streak through them. This only happens on the laptop; I can import the images onto my desktop LR and there isn't the streak of colour.   Can someone help?
This is happening even with photos that were taken on another camera, not just mine.  My daughter told me that the laptop recently fell.  The yellow streak is not anywhere else on the laptop, just on the photos in LR.

I have had this problem on my desktop.  I have been attempting to reproduce it where it can be debugged. Here are some observations/facts in my environment--no conclusions:
    1. I do not import from camera or memory stick directly into LR.  I copy all images (using Explorer) from camera to two different locations (backup location first); and then my working area. In both cases, after files are copied I mark them Read-only.
    2. Poor observation, but in any event: the issue has only occurred when I do a large number of images. Its a poor observation as I have no exact number.  I suspect when I do less than 50 always works well every time.  However, I have also done some very large imports without issue.
    3. Error only occurs with my RAW images--for me that's NEF.  I have multiple cameras--those that only capture jpg images have never had an issue in LR.
    4. Even if the file is marked Read Only issues can still occur.  I then remove the image from the disk using LR -- and then manually (Explorer) copy in my backup image -- re import again and all is well.  I think one time I exited LR and replaced the bad file with a backup and restarted LR and all was well again.
    5. When it occurs I have performed a HASH value on the broken file and on the backed up file to determine if the file contents has changed--and each time the file contents has changed.
    6. I have had this occur immediately after import, but most often it occurs like this... import large number of images; Make changes in Development Module on random image, export jpg of changes--exit LR. Open up LR and file is corrupted.
    7. I have had this issue on multiple USB drives ( okay just 2 different drives have been tested ).
What next--fire up Process Monitor and monitor the system (specifically LR) to see if it reports any file open for write access when this occurs.  So, far I have not had process monitor actually running when it occurs--one of these days.
