Express and ethernet hard disk

So I'm trying to make an ethernet hard disk wireless with my airport express. Apparently this is possible by changing some settings, but I don't really know what I'm doing. Any help or ideas would be wonderful.

Corneillious, Welcome to the discussion area!
Unfortunately this is only possible if a unique set of conditions are met.
Normally the Ethernet port on the AirPort Express (AX) is NOT active. The ONLY way to make the AX's Ethernet port active is to have the AX use WDS to wirelessly join a network. This is easily done if your network is created by another AX or even an AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS). However if your wireless network is created by another device this is almost certainly not possible. Very, very, very few non-Apple devices are compatible with Apple's WDS.

Try a restart. If the problem is the same, try deleting the com.apple.finder.plist.
Either hold down the option key while using the Finder “Go To Folder” command
and select your user Library in your home folder or use the Finder “Go To Folder” command and enter ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist.  Move the .plist to your desktop.
Relaunch Finder (command - option - esc) and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plist to where you got them from, overwriting the newer ones.
If you prefer to make your user library permanently visible, use the Terminal command found below.
    Show User Library
You might want to bookmark the command. I had to use it again after I installed 10.8.4. I have also been informed that if you drag the user library to Finder it will remain visible.

    Hi Jon,
I saw something similar on SPARC when people used s2 (entire disk on non EFI disks) as ASM devices. The workaround we use is to create a new partition, and start it at cylinder 1. This protects the disk label from being overwritten by ASM.

Are you wanting each machine to view those photos thru iPhoto? There are several ways of sharing and others can fill you in more on the conventional ways. Some are:

Let me suggest another possible way.
That is use iPhoto in it's alias mode on each of the machines. Then store your source files on the external HD and let each machine create an alias based library of those files. Each machine will have an independent, unique library whose edits, slideshows, etc will be unique to that machine. Those machines can only delete the alias files from their library, they can't touch the original source files. The only caveat is if the external HD is not mounted the library will only be able to be used in a limited way, viewing thumbnails, adding comments and keywords only. You can put a few photos in a folder on the external HD and create a test alias library to experiment.
I've created some Tutorials to assist users in converting over to an alias based system.

  • HELP!!! Constant freezing, Bugged updates, Repair failure, and No Hard disk

Hi, I have had my iMac for just about a year now. It has never had any major problems up until now. One day, when i was using a downloaded non-Mac application that I had had for a while, my iMac freezes. Only the curser can move now. I pushed the power button putting the computer to sleep, then, waking it up again. All back to normal and I didn't think anything about it.
A couple of days later, it starst happening again, but with Mac applications too. It to the point to where i had to restart my computer by holing down the power button (aka. "the last resort"). It gets so bad to the point that I cannot use my computer anymore. The only thing I can do when it's frozen is move the curser, nothing else. So I take it to my local Apple Store. Guess what, it works perfectly when I turn it on there! Ha Ha Ha No. But yes it does work which is bad because he cannot fix a working computer. He repairs the permissions on the computer anyway, just to make sure. When I get home I power up my computer and it works aweful. Oh, and I forgot to mention earlier that it takes about 10-25 minutes to get to the login screen! Every time. So now I wait, without a computer for about a month until Christmas. I get the Drive Genius software by Prosoft for Christmas. So I use it to try to fix my iMac. I repaired everything possible to repair. So now the computer is working a lot better, but there are still some things that freeze. Such as, closing a window, or quitting an application, checking my email, and emtying the trash. A few weeks later I was calling an Apple support agent about a different product whitch was accually my fault but he gave me some suggestions to fix my computer. So I did the hardware test like he told me to and it did nothing. I did and archive and install and it worked!. So when you do one, there are like 20 things to update. I updated OS X first, then some other needed updates, when those were done and restarted I had planned on doing all of the security updates. On my second wave, the one right before the security updates, I restared my computer when the finished and then when I came back into the room, the screen was blue and had that little swirly gray loading thing. I left it on that for 6 or 7 hours hoping it would finally go through, but it did not. Back to the archive and install. I performed it once again and decided to change the order of the updates to, OS X, then all of the security ones, then everything else. it worked all of it. But, it eventually started freezing again. This time it was real freezing, the kind where your curser becomes a little "wheel of fortune" thing. BANKRUPT! I figured it was a bugged update because both failures happened close after the updates. It is archive and install time again. So I shut down my computer using "the last resort" while I am busy buying vowels and solving the puzzle. So I put the CD in and start. It took a little too long for the CD to find my hard disc. It made me nervous. I start the install but have to go. When I come bock to my house, the thing says "install failed please restart and try again". So I tried. but it never finds my hard disk. Its gone. Poof! I get the "no startup disk" floder sign on starup. One thing is that my Drive Genius software detects my disk easily. And that concludes my fairytale adventure.
Thanks and I hope somebody can help,
    Jamey

Hey, thanks for responding. Well, first of all how do i a PMU? I have connected a logitech L/R click mouse with a scroll wheel, an Apple keyboard with an Apple brand keyboard USB extention cord, an iPod connector cord (no iPod connected), an HP PSC 1200 series all-in-one printer, and some non-Apple speakers. All of the computers in my house are on a airport express wireless internet system. At the Apple store all I had was an Apple mouse, Apple keyboard. Would it make any difference how I plugged these in? I have a battery backup system. Plugged into that are the following: (under battery backup and surge protector) my computer and my printer. (Under just surge protector) another power strip with surge protecctor and isolated outlets. On that are my speakers, my cell phone charger, my neon clock, and my desk light.
Thanks, I hope this information helps you help me resolve my problem,
    Jamey

  • Can I use Airport Express as a hard disk?

Hi, I'm looking for a product to back up my whole Apple devices. I searched for the cheapest option, and I figured out that there was only 3 different kinds of external drives. But I'm not sure if the Airport Express has something to do with backing up. Is it just for wifi? Can I use it as a hard disk? Or is it the one with the tallest shape which only has storage options?

The AirPort Express cannot support a hard drive, so scratch that one from your list if your requirements call for the ability to attach a hard drive.
The "tall" AirPort Extreme can, if you connect the hard drive to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme.
The Time Capsule is an AirPort Extreme with a built in hard drive, available in either 2 TB or 3 TB versions.

  • Local Network (Ethernet) Hard Disk

I have seen information suggesting that it is possible to network a large hard disk on an Ethernet network to archive graphic content so that all computers are able to access it without a server.
However, setup and software was not explained.
Also, the hard disk suggested was an HP and I am not sure that is the best. Who has had experience with such a setup? Would something like the Data Solutions 2 degrees frost (www.2degreesfrost.com) be a choice that would connect directly to ethernet?
    Frank
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   I also have a G3 and G4 iBook and a G5 Tower. The G3 runs system 9 yet.

Well, unless you have an External HDD that has an Ethernet port on it (to connect to your Router) or a USB port (to possibly try and connect to a USB port on a Router), then it can't be done with your normal equipment.
If you have a USB port with cable from an External HDD and have a USB port on your Router (mine has one, the small A type port I think, the same as our Printer's USB port) and I know that can be used to connect to the Internet/Network from computer to Router, so it has a chance of being able to connect to the Router from an External HDD.
The 2 main problems/concerns about this are that the USB port may only be 1.1 (most likely there on the Router for use as a Printer port and 2.0 speed not needed as quite a few printers have only 1.1 USB ports on them. If it worked, speed would be slow. The other problem is that if you did try this, you may not be able to get the USB port on the Router working with the External HDD as your Router may need to have a special USB Device Driver installed on the "computer" that wants to use the USB port on the Router (again, my 2Wire brand Router that I got when I signed up for AT&T (SBC) Yahoo DSL also needs this to allow the Router to recognize the connected device on the other end of the Ethernet Cable).
If your Router has a USB port that was made to be a connection for a Printer (acting as a Print Server), then you might get lucky and not need a driver for this though you may need to configure things in your Router's System Settings which may not allow anything other than a Printer, all you could do is try and see what works or not.
The main 2 ways that people connect Hard Drives to a Network (without having them being connected to a specific computer on the Network as an External or Internal Drive) is to either purchase a NAS (basically an External HDD that also includes an Ethernet port on it (and comes with cable) to attach to your Router, and usually has a couple USB ports on it as well, for another External HDD or 2 to be attached to the NAS or for Printer to act as a Print Server.
Buffalo Tech. is a pretty good brand of above average External HDDs, NAS units, SAN units and so on... I got my basic 250 GB Buffalo Tech NAS at www.tigerdirect.com for $199 back in Sept, and it is great. You can change the settings for how you want to use it, for example, you can have it automatically turn off at a certain time/turn back on at a certain time, meaning you can have it save power during your sleep hours without having to do anything. Or you can have it auto- on schedule- Backup the whole NAS drive to an attached USB HDD to always have that backup around, you can have multiple access settings as well as listed below.
You can set up different "users" and "passwords", or a specific "all" sharing folder for all allowed computers and a "windows" folder for only Windows systems to have access to, as well as having a "mac" folder for only Mac systems to access, therefore being able to sort/separate the items on the NAS by what computer systems they might be used on -universal file types can be thrown in the "all" folder for both windows and macs systems to access.
You can also let your NAS through the Settings, be able to accept FTP so that you can give someone your URL address -your ISP internet number address thingy with the network location name -computer's name or NAS's name etc- and the proper user name and password, and they can then remotely access your NAS (or whatever areas of the NAS that you let them) from anywhere that is connected to the internet.
You can also Set certain Permissions and Authorized Users for different folders on the NAS, which allows a specific person to choose to allow only certain "computers" available on the network, meaning you can create areas that are blocked from, let's say, a child's/teenager's computer so that they don't have access to any adult content stored on there that you may want access to from your computer.
Ok, that was way long. I still have one other option to list, which is basically the same as the NAS idea, except you might not get the bonuses of using an actual NAS...
You can find little units that aren't cheap (usually seen at around $70 or more) which let you take anywhere from 2-4 USB External HDDs and connect them to this unit, which then has an Ethernet Port on it which lets you connect it to your Router. The unit might also have a "built-in" print server, so that you can plug in a USB Printer to it as well. Since these units are not part of the Hard Drives, Your Router, or any Computer (all which you will need to have already, or will purchase afterwards if needed) this means that they are probably harder to have access to/control over in the way of settings... Less features available that a NAS unit might be able to do, but is cheaper than a NAS (which does come with a built-in HDD of up to 500-750GB now) and is perfect if you just want the connectivity aspect and already have 1 or more USB HDD that you want to be able to reuse in this manner.
So there are several possible options available, depending on the amount of $$ that you want to spend, what you already have and would like to use in the set-up, and if you want to try and test out the cheaper ways first to see if they work or not, or if you just want to buy something and attach it (install any needed software/drivers) etc. I will add as a note that some NAS say that they have 2 USB ports on them, which they do, but also state that you can connect up to 2 USB HDDs or a Printer to the device. This is missleading, as some (which you may only find out from the Manufacturer's Website, or in the Instructions Manual etc) can actually only handle one USB HDD and one USB Printer. The NAS I have is like this, the USB port on the back is for USB HDD only, and the front panel USB port is for USB Printer only. So no 2 USB HDD at the same time... Also, printers that will actually work as a print server through this will vary. Check the Manufacturers website (Mine was not listed, so I emailed them. They said it was not tested by them, it may work and that as long as it wasn't a multi-use printer -as in printer, scanner, copier, fax etc all in one- that it could work). I then took my question to Canon (my Printer manufacturer) and they has no idea. It ended up not working, which I suspect is because of my needing the iPixma Device Drivers to install on my computer, and the NAS can't access the drivers needed. My printer shares on the Network just fine when installed and attached to one (our main) computer, and I can even have it do an auto turn off after 15 minutes of inactivity and turn on again when needed, the only problem is then needing to have that specific computer turned on when wanting to print (or we just go and use that computer when anything needs printing...
Ok, again, waaaayy too long. Sorry about that. I tend to ramble on quite a bit, not like you haven't noticed already.

  • 10.2.8 installation and external hard disk does not show on desktop

I just reinstalled OS X 10.2 (by erasing the hard disk during installation) and upgraded with the Combo pack to 10.2.8 . This is an iMac G4 1GHz with a 17-inch display. I tried connecting a Western Digital MyBook with 500Gb through both the USB port and through FireWire. In both cases the hard drive does not appear on the desktop BUT does appear in the Disk Utility program and in the System Information window. Finder, therefore, doesn't display the drive. The MyBook drive is formatted to Windows FAT 32. Before I reinstalled OS X 10.2.8, this machine was running 10.3.9 and the drive did appear (I'm still searching for the 10.3 disk).
Is this an issue with OS X 10.2.8? Given the drive is detected by the System Information section and by the Disk Utility, is there a way of forcing Finder to display it (and allow access)?

Sometimes I have found that I have to turn of the ext. hd and then reconnect the firewire cables. there is a cylinder that is an inch away from one of the firewire plugs, which should be connected toward the tower and the other firewire plug toward the ext. hd. have patience, sometimes it will show up. also a restart maybe...

  • About time capsule and external hard disk

I have got rMBP.  I also have got time capsule.  External WD hard disk is connected to time capsule.
I have got 3 users in my rMBP:
    (1) Admin : Administrator
    (2) User A : I normally do all my work from this user.
    (3) User B: I recently added this new user.
Here, using Finder tabs, User A can see time capsule and External WD hard disk.  But, Admin and User B cannot. I also want User B to have the ability to see WD hard disk (and time capsule).  For User B and Admin, time capsule does show up, but it shows as not connected.  How can I provide User B the ability to see External WD hard disk (since User B needs to store large different files there)?  Any permission issue on hard disk?
(Amazingly backup does take place automatically even if I am connected as User B or Admin).
I will appreciate your feedback.  Thanks.

Once the external HD is turned on my Time Capsule is not longer recognized. I can't connect to Time Capsule and make any backups. It is also no longer appearing in the Airport settings.
you could try a power cycle on your devices. turn off modem, TC, and HD for, say, 10 minutes. turn the modem back on for 2 minutes, followed by the HD, followed by the TC.
then go airport utility > manual setup > disks. see if your HD is showing beneath the TC

  • Mpd and external hard disk

    here is my problem:
I have a partition on my laptop's hard disk that has multimedia stuff -music, videos, books, etc.  - in ext3
I have a external hard disk with the exact same structure because I ran out space on my partition, and it is in ntfs (because I want it to work with windows)
I don't want to duplicate the data from my hard drive into the external HD - it's 72G -
I don't want to replace my current partition by the external HD because I may not carry the external hard drive all the time
How do I do to my external HD be mounted on my current file system transparently? So that I can use it with mpd without it bothering me?
A dirty fix that I'm pondering is to move my partition mount point to another folder and make some scripts to make soft links int the /mnt/files folder, but I wanted to see if anyone has a better solution

It depends how you connect the external HDD. If it is permanently connected mount the disk thro' fstab on the directory of your music in mpd. or if you want to mount a particular folder only to that music folder use mount --bind from rc.local thro' a script. Normally starting mpd from .xinitrc is good imo instead of starting thro' rc.conf.
