Express--Extreme--Dlink set up

Hi'all:
I have set up my express as a base and I extended my wireless range with extreme. I can surf internet, play music with express and share my hard drive with extreme flawless. I have all set up in my basement. I have old extra Dlink WBR 2310 so I think If I can able to extend my wireless using Dlink wireless router. I like to set up like this.. Express----Extend with Extreme----Extend more with Dlink.
Is this possible? OR my dlink router won't be compatible with airport express or extreme.
Thanks in advance.!!

Sorry, but no. Most non-AirPort routers are not WDS compatible, so the chance that you can use the D-Link router to further extend your AirPort is not very likely.
However, it may be possible if you connect the D-Link to the AirPort Extreme by wire (Ethernet).

  • Set up a WDS with Express an DLink

Is it possible to set up a WDS with AP Express and Dlink 614+ or you need to use only apple products for that?
I would like to use DLink as an extra antenna for my AP Express.
    KR

It is not possible to use any D-Link product in an Apple WDS, since none of D-Link's products support Apple's implementation of a WDS.
If you are in the market to buy a non Apple wireless router, get a Linksys WRT54G or WRT54GS - these two models do support Apple's WDS. Use that router as your network's "base station", and use the Airport Express to wirelessly extend the range of its network.
If all you want to do is extend the range of an existing Airport Express that you do not want to replace by a non-Apple wireless router, I recommend you spend the money to buy a second Airport Express.

  • Extend public wlan range with Express/Extreme?

I'm connecting a public wlan network from home with the iBook. Unfortunately the wlan signal strength is ok just close to the windows. I'd like to have a device to pick the incoming signal, strengten it and spread it to the appartment. Could I use one of the Airport products for this? The public wlan expects the clients to be configured to use dhcp. The wlan is open with no excryption. To enhance the signal quality it might be necessary to use an external antenna placed outside the window and attached to the device with a cable, but I'm not sure if this is needed. Suggestions anyone?
    iBook   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

An Express/Extreme cannot extend the range of a non-WDS base station. Even with a WDS base station, it would need to be configured to know about your Express/Extreme and use it as a WDS remote base station.
About the only thing I can suggest is to get a wireless-to-Ethernet bridge and connect a directional antenna to it, which would be pointed toward the nearest WLAN base station. You could then run Ethernet from the bridge to an Express or Extreme set up as an access point using a different wireless channel than the public WLAN, which would give you coverage within your residence. It would look something like this:
    <PRE>
    Public WLAN ))))) bridge --------- Express/Extreme ))))) iBook
    </PRE>
(")))))" represents wireless, "-----" represents Ethernet)

  • How to correctly write an MDX expression for a set

    Hello,
    i've got 2 dimension hierarchies:
    1) [Hierarchy1].[CityOfBirth]
    2) [Hierarchy2].[CityOfResidence]
Both these hierarchies contain same members - cities
How do I write an MDX expression for a set containing all possible combinations of both dimensions ([Hierarchy1].[CityOfBirth].Member, [Hierarchy2].[CityOfResidence].Member)
but excluding those tuples where [Hierarchy1].[CityOfBirth].Member = [Hierarchy2].[CityOfResidence].Member.
I.e. there shouldn't be tuples like (New York, New York) or (Chicago, Chicago) in the set.

    Hi,
depending on the structure of your hierarchies, someting like the following should work:
    SELECT
    {} ON 0
    ,Filter
    [Hierarchy1].[CityOfBirth]
    [[Hierarchy2].[CityOfResidence]
    [Hierarchy1].CurrentMember.Name
    <>
    [[Hierarchy2].CurrentMember.Name
    ) ON 1
    FROM [Your Cube];
The way the cities are expressed should of course be the same: "NY" is different from "New York"
Something about the same in the adventure works cube for testing.  the two geography hierarchies are here from a different dimension:
    SELECT
    {} ON 0
    ,Filter
    [Customer].[Customer Geography].[Country]
    [Geography].[Geography].[Country]
    [Customer].[Customer Geography].CurrentMember.Name
    <>
    [Geography].[Geography].CurrentMember.Name
    ) ON 1
    FROM [Adventure Works];
    Philip,

  • What is the transfer rate of an airport express extreme router?

I am buying a router and I could not locate (in the package) the transfer speed rate of an airport express extreme router.  Does anyone know how they compare to other commercial routers, from say Cisco?

Yes it is interesting to look at the speed of technological advance.  I first started using an Apple about 30 years ago when they had floppy discs rather than hard drives.  Mine had two floppy disc drives so I could work all day without swopping discs (single disc drives needed you to swop the data disc and the programme disc every so often as the Ram on the machine was limited.  Since then I have up-graded every 4 to 5 years (approximately every other operating system upgrade)
Before that, in the 1970's we were changing from slide rules to electronic calculators which got steadily better and cheaper.  The early Anita Calculator (with valves) cost as much as a small car - now they give simple calculators away with Christmas Cards.
I wonder how much further the technology behind the home computer will go before further advances, like those in calculators, become pointless from the user's point of view.  Maybe it will take another 10 years or so but once everything we want to do is incorporated into a voice driven computing device possibly storing data in the cloud, then it will be the reliability of the components that will be the benchmark of a good system and having the latest "fastest" model will be far less important.

  • HT1998 When will Apple release an new firmware update (7.6.5 or higher) for the Airport Express/Extreme?

I am sure most of you know how terrible the 7.6.3 firmware for the airpot express/extreme is.  I was on the phone with Apple technical support and they had admitted there are issues with this lastest firmware and confirmed they are working on it.  I know how well Apple fixes their issues however it has been over 6 months and nothing.  Because of all these issues, I have had to roll back all my airport equipment to 7.6.1 mainly to use the Airplay feature. Is there any projection for a new update or is Apple just ignoring this issue!?

What problem are you having exactly? I have updated  to 7.6.3 and AirPlay works just fine in fact better especially with iTunes. All my wireless devices show up  as soon as they are turned on or  in range.
Not trying to predict anything here, but if the firmware update  IS defective software, Apple probably would've fixed it by now.

  • Airport express / extreme / Time Capsule Range

Airport express / extreme / Time Capsule Range
Can anyone please tell me what is the approximate range of Apple Airport Products.
While doing sell in Apple store customer always ask us this question and we don't had any answer for it.
So please if anyone has the answer do reply on this.
    - - - Akshay k. (ACMT)

The range is about 50 meters or 150 feet.....but this assumes that the AirPort is being used in a very large open space like a aircraft hangar.....with no obstructions in the signal path.
Chances are, your home is laid out a bit differently, so without knowing a number of variable factors like.....
    1) How many walls there will be in the signal path between wireless devices
    2) The actual construction type of the walls, ceilings, etc
    3) Heavy furniture, large mirrors, etc. in the signal path
4 ) Other wireless networks around your home
    5) Other wireless devices like cordless phones, BlueTooth devices, etc.
It would be impossible to tell you what the actual range might be in your home.
In general, assuming normal modern home construction, you would not want the wireless signal to pass through more than 2 or 3 walls....since each wall will absorb on average about 15-25% of the wireless signal. A ceiling will absorb even more because of its thickness.

  • Should I buy airport express, extreme or time capsule?  I have my new Mac Pro. 2 iPhones, 2 iPads , and grandchildren who come with their devices.  I live in a two-level house.

Should I buy airport express, extreme or time capsule?  I have my new Mac Pro. 2 iPhones, 2 iPads , and grandchildren who come with their devices.  I live in a two-level house.

A Time Capsule is an AirPort Extreme with a built in hard drive to allow your Mac(s) to back up automatically, so it's a logical choice if you need a wireless router and back up capabilities for your Macs
The AIrPort Extreme has a bit better antenna arrangement than an AirPort Express, so it would be a good choice for a two level house.
Depending on the location of the "main" wireless router, you may find that you still need to add an extender or two in other parts of the house for full, fast wireless coverage. The AirPort Express is a good choice for this duty.
To compare the 3 Apple devices, see this Apple support document:

  • HT4307 Works out-of-box with Airport Express Extreme, or not?

"With most Wi-Fi networks, Game Center will just work."
Does this mean that a Airport Express Extreme will work out of the box with Game Center? Or do I need to configure the firewall?

The HT4307 article you attached has a sentence that starts:  "To use Game Center on a restricted Wi-Fi network, ..."
So it would make sense that whether you can use Airport Express Extreme (I believe it's either AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme, not both) out of the box would depend on your Wi-Fi environment.

  • I have an airport extreme and am trying to extend the range of the wireless network with an airport express.  I set it up with the help of apple support, both lights are green on both airports, but the range didn't change.  What could be wrong?

I am trying to extend the range of my wireless network by adding an airport express to an airport extreme.  I configured it with the help of apple support, but it hasn't changed the range that I can access the internet wirelessly in my house.  What could be the problem?  Does weather affect the wireless network??

So, on the Extreme you checked the box to "allow this network to be extened" ?
    Correct?
And on the Express, you set it up to "Extend a wireless network" ?
    Correct?

    Configuring a wireless extended network
To create a wireless extended network, you must place any extended Wi-Fi base stations within range of the primary Wi-Fi base station.
Start with the device that will be configured as the primary Wi-Fi base station.  Then configure your extended Wi-Fi base stations, ensuring that each is within direct range of the primary Wi-Fi base station. The physical location of extended Wi-Fi base stations will vary according to the building environment and may require some experimentation.
If you have configured your Wi-Fi base stations in the past, it may be helpful to do a factory default reset of each Wi-Fi base station that will be part of the wireless extended network before you begin.

  • How to set up time capsule with existing network that uses airport express/extreme

I have an existing wirelss network using airport express. I want to upgrade to time capsule and use the A/P express upstairs. I dont want to delete the existing network.

  • Can Airport Express / Computer be set up to steam music and go online at the same time?

I can only connect my MacBook to one device (wireless modum and airport extreme) at a time.  I have gotten a few error messages during setup that make me wonder if it is the "refurb" device that is bad. I get error messages when I try to set it up wirelessly.  Or do I need the extreme to do what I want?  I installed all updates it asked for as well.

Yes, both can be done simultaneously. You just need to reconfigure the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) to "join" the wireless network provided by the other wireless router.
AirPort Express Base Station (AX) - iTunes Setup
Either connect to the AX's wireless network or connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then using the AirPort Utility in "Manual Setup" mode, make the following changes:
AirPort Utility > Select the AX > Manual Setup > AirPort > Wireless
Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
    Network Name: <existing wireless network>
Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
Wireless Password: <enter the existing wireless network password>
Verify Password: <re-enter the existing wireless network password>
AirPort Utility > Select the AX > Manual Setup >Music
    Enable AirTunes (checked)
iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
    iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
    Verify Password: (optional)
Click Update to write the new settings to the AX

  • Airport Express and IPTV Set Top Box

I want to connect an IPTV Set Top Box to my wireless router but my provider's STB doesn't have Wireless networking. So I though to connect it to my wireless network with an Airport Express.
I made a scheme of how it would be connected:
Is it possible to make this?

The Ethernet port on the AirPort Express (AX) is ONLY active when the AX uses WDS to wirelessly connect to a network. Unfortunately very, very, very few non-Apple devices support Apple's WDS.
So if your wireless router is another AX or an AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS), this is possible. But otherwise it is most likely not possible.

  • Can Airport Extreme be set as remote in a WDS?

I have set a WDS with an Airport Extreme set as main (n) and two Airport Express set as a relay (g) and a remote(n). I just got a Time Capsule wich I will set as my new main. Now I would like to have my old Airport Extreme set as a relay or remote... is that possible???
    I'll appeciate any help

Now I would like to have my old Airport Extreme set as a relay or remote... is that possible???
Yes. The AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) can perform as either a main, relay, or remote base station in a WDS.

  • Airport Express & Extreme in WDS, 2 ACLs?

I'm hooking up an express to extend my current extreme network. I use Access Control List on the extreme, when in WDS mode, is this ACL automatically used by the express, or do I need to set it again in the express?
    Thanks.
    G5 - 1.6GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.1)

ACL is a "feel good" measure only. It does not provide any real security since the MAC addresses can easily be discovered and cloned.
