Express slot in MacBook pro

what is an express slot

An express card slot lets you expand your MacBook Pro's Potential. Go to amazon or google and type in Express card 34 and you will get see many things can by, from firewire cards (on a separate bus than the Firewire 800 port), Memory card readers (for cameras etc), eSATA cards (not sure if drivers are supported, you would have to do some research).
Ultimately it is a way to expand your mac with current and future technology.

  • Airport Express (steady greenlight) + MacBook Pro but no working airtunes

I do have the following situation:
After my first attempt more than 3/4 of a year ago, I thought it would be nice to try to connect my AE again with my new MBP. Last time I gave up, so I thought give it a new try!
I finally was able to access my AE with Airport Admin Utility.
The goal is to use the AE only to play Itunes through wifi on my stereo, no printing or internet access/sharing needed.
The AE is set with the following configuration:
    AIRPORT-tab:
    Name: Base Station
    Contact: -
    Location: -
    Airport Network:
Wireless Mode: Join an Existing Wireless Network (Wireless Client)
Wireless Network: Livebox-ff44 (this is my ISP router)
Wireless Security: 128 bit WEP (also tried Not Enabled)
    INTERNET-tab:
    Connect Using: Wireless Network
    Configure TCP/IP
    Configure: Using DHCP
    IP address: 192.168.1.11
    Subnet mask: 25.255.255.0
    Router address: 192.168.1.1
    DNS servers: -
    Domain name: -
    DHCP Client ID: -
    MUSIC-tab:
Enable Airtunes on this base station (ticked)
Enable Airtunes over the Ethernetport (ticked but ghosted)
    Itunes Speaker Name: Base Station
    No Itunes Speaker password set
So once again, the LED light is steady green.
In Itunes the Base Station can be selected, but music is still played of
the laptop speakers and not through the AE. I connected my Ipod headset
directly to the audio jack on the AE (I assume this is possible to check in this way), but no sound.
The Itunes volume is set correctly.
Does anyone has a clue what I am doing wrong or how I can test my situation easily?

I assume that you are using 802.11g or b networking rather than 802.11n? I can get this to work with my Macbook Pro with 802.11g wireless with my airport express connected to my existing network, but when I turn on the 802.11n broadcast on, it fails. My Macbook is equipped with an 802.11n airport card and I can connect to the internet.

  • Airport express and new macbook pro

my daughter has just purchased a new macbook pro and we have set up the airport express. her macbook tells her that she is connected to the airport express but she can not load safari.

Hello Jodi Meyer. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
How do you have the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) configured to get Internet access? That is, do you have it connected directly to another router or modem? If so, what is the make/model number of that other device?

  • Airport Express invisible to Macbook Pro

    Hello folks,
I've had an Airport Express wireless router for about 4 months now and from the get go I've had problems with it.
Particularly, When I power the airport express off and switch it back on again, my Macbook pro cannot find the network, even after numerous restarts. I've discovered that if I have some other wireless device connect to it, like my Wii, PSP or even my macbook running windows XP, then Mac OS recognizes the network right away with no problems. It's just that I need to have some other operating system find it first.
It's rather annoying but to have to go through all of that extra step, and I'd rather leave my airport off when I'm not using it so I can save some energy. Has anyone any idea about how to get around this problem? Thank you.

Suddenly, my Macbook was not able to find out our network (secured with WPA password) anymore. But, the PC can find it ok and my MacBook can see all the other networks of the neighborhood!
    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
You might try resetting your connection settings using the steps listed in this message:

  • Will Final Cut express work with MacBook Pro??

I am new to Mac and got my first Mac, MacBook pro. 2.4GHZ - 2.o Gig Memory.
Will this be enough or is there an hardware requirement that macbook pro does not come with?
iMovie 08 does not have the effects I was using in the old PC. Slow motion, combining many audio tracks, cross fade etc.
    Thanks

Final Cut Pro is the same program (to all intents and purposes) as Final Cut Express and requires the same power of computer - no more, no less.
For most people, FCP will not do anything that FCE can't - apart from allowing you to use formats such as DVCPRO etc. that amateurs are unlikely to use. All the filters and transitions are exactly the same except for a couple of insignificant ones.
The only reason for buying FCP is in order to get all the other programs that are bundled with it.

  • Express card for MacBook Pro

I have a 15in MacBook Pro (Early 2008). and i have bought an Express Card from ST Lab which i cannot seem to get to work.
When i look in the Systems Report, were does the Express Card show up??
And were is the driver? will it automatically load up?
    Thx
    John

I just bought the same st-lab USB3.0 expresscard on offer from Maplin, to try in a 17" unibody MBP, 2009 running Snow Leopard.
I downloaded and installed the LaCie USB 3.0 driver, which recognized the card, since it uses the same chipset as Lacie's adapter and LaCie don't seem to have enforced any vendor tie-in (they might have for usb3.0 drives, though, not sure yet).
In System Profiler (About this Mac -> More Info) it shows up under PCI regardless of driver, and, with the LaCie driver installed, it appears also under USB as a "USB Super-Speed Bus".
I haven't tried it with a USB 3.0 drive yet (none to hand) but it runs USB2.0 drives just fine, power issues notwithstanding (it won't supply enough to run e.g. an Iomega 1TB USB2.0 pocket drive - needs a 2-ended USB cable with extra power supplied from one of the Mac's USB ports, or external 5v plugged into its power socket).
I haven't tried it on a Thunderbolt equipped mac (mine is too old for that), but the LaCie driver claims to be Lion compatible.
I also downloaded CalDigit drivers - these are based on open source code so while people report that the driver as-supplied doesn't work with non-CalDigit drives, they do provide source code under the GPL. which one could readily modify to suit other vendors. The also provide a brief PDF doc describing (very vaguely) the process to build the driver from source - this is enough for a reasonably experienced programmer but won't be of any use to the average user. The CalDigit documntation suggests issues with thunderbolt systems, implying that some or other Apple update may have stopped their driver working (this is speculation - when the LaCie driver worked I didn't investigate further.)
All trademarks acknowledged, and it goes without saying that neither Apple, ST-Lab, Lacie nor CalDigit will support any of this in this context.

  • Ssd express card on macbook pro (late 2010)

    Greetings Jon,
I'm guessing from your description that you were using FaceTime Beta.  With the release of the full version of FaceTime for sale in the Mac Appstore, the Beta is no longer available through Apple.  If you have backups (which everyone with anything they care about on their computer should) you could restore the App from your backup.
If you don't like using a credit card online you can go buy an App Store gift card in a local store and add credit to your account to purchase it.
    Best of luck!

  • USB 3.0 express card for Macbook Pro on Lion?

Does anybody know a USB 3.0 express card that works with Macbook Pro using Lion?
I just got an IOGear express card from Amazon that did NOT make it clear that it was Windows only.
Only after I tried to install it was it painfully obvious it was Windows only.
    Thanks

Hey mark327 do you know if i can use this card as well with this driver?

  • Is it possible to set up my old airport express to my macbook pro?

I have  an airport express base station that i used back when I used an ibook G4.  Can I still use this airport for my macbook pro?
I tried installing and setting up but got a message that Power PC applications are no longer supported.

Forget about the CD, it will not be useful.
Use the workaround described in this thread: How do I configure an Airport Express when I get this message in Airport Utility? "This version of AirPort Utility doesn’t support this base station."
Pay attention to the caveat in the final paragraph, restated here for emphasis:
Keep in mind that Apple's decision to abandon support for your original AirPort Express was for reasons known only to them. Remember that you are using obsolete equipment, should some future OS X feature not work for you.

  • Drag and drop file from desktop screen to SD card in slot on macbook pro

Hi i am trying to put a file from my Macbook Pros desktop and drag over to my SD card which is inserted in the side of the mac, this is a firmware update for my digital camera which needs to go onto the SD card and inserted into the camera. I can start to drag the file but as soon as it nears the open folder of my sd card the cursor changes to like a greyed out no entry sign and will not drop, the card is fat-32 if that helps. Sandisk Extreme pro 32gb class 10.

The card reader is apparently stuck in write-locked mode. I don't generally advise do-it-yourself hardware repair, but one ASC poster managed to fix this problem. I haven't tried the fix myself and I can't offer any guidance beyond what's in that discussion. If you cause damage, don't expect your warranty to cover it. I suggest you instead make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.

  • Is there any difference in sound quality in streaming music over Airport Express in IMac, MacBook Pro and iPad?

I've noticed a difference in quality when streaming my iPad wirelessly to my Yamaha receiver and high quality speakers versus my Pro or iMac. The iPad sounds like a toy in comparison to the computers. I'd like some expert advice on what I should expect from the three mentioned devices when streaming wirelessly through a pretty good audio system. Like for instance, should there be much difference in sound quality between the Pro and the iMac?

First, don't hang onto the hope that next year's MBP won't have an optical drive; instead, you'd be advised to purchase a 2011 MacBook Air, which doesn't have an optical drive but relies on SDD. If you need a CD/DVD drive, you can get that separately, if you need. The latest Air has received better reviews than anything else in the Apple lineup.
I'm not an expert on the different brand of keys available. But you'll want to make sure the color is an exactly match to the model. Replacing thes keys is relatively inexpensive but tedious, you might do well to email sellers to guarantee the color and fit.
    Good luck with the repair!

  • AirPort Express problem on MacBook Pro

I'm having problems connecting to the internet via work place LAN while booted up in Lion.  Sometimes I can go into settings preferences or what ever that's called and get it to work by trial and error but it's very difficult.  Right now I'm using AirPort Express connected to the LAN but I get the same problem when connecting directly to the LAN.  And again I can sometimes get conection by trial and error but with great difficulty.  What's strange though is that when I boot up into Windows 7 bootcamp I get a connection emediately with no problems.

I had the same problem. The Airport Express (used to provide ethernet access to a G5) would join my b/g 2.4Ghz network (from Dual Band Airport Extreme) instead of the 5Ghz "n" network (from same Airport Extreme)
Oddly, when I changed my Dual Band Airport Extreme from "802.11n only (5GHz) - 802.11b/g" to "802.11n only (5GHz) - 802.11b/g/n" my Airport Express would join the 5Ghz network fine.
This seems to be somewhat finicky, but i've got it working the way I want at the moment with the current settings:
    Airport Extreme:
    Create Wireless Network
    802.11n only (5GHz) - 802.11b/g/n
    Channel (Manual) 161, 1
    Use Wide Channels
    Airport Express:
    Join Wireless Network

  • Airport express with my MacBook Pro flashes yellow but . . .

is working. It normally always went to green when the signal locked but for some reason now it continues to flash yellow but is working.
I looked for another area to post this but couldn't find where it is covered.

It should actually be in you Applications/Utilities folder. Part of the system install. If it is working okay, it is not a great problem the light flashing. But some things will not work right at some point. If you are moving soon, why not wait till you get there and set it up again. I am pretty sure it is a software thing. Have had it myself.
