Express - there was an error joining the apple network!

I have an Imac g5 that did not come with an airport expreme card, so I just bought one and installed it.
I'm also trying to set up a new airport express as my main base station for internet and stereo use. I have a green light on my base station, but every time I try to use the Airport Setup Assistant, I get the error message, "there was an error joining the apple network". My computer recognizes that there is a new network and asks me if I want to join it, but when I try to, I get that error message. I pulled out the extreme card and reinstalled it. I moved the AX right next to my computer . . . still nothing. I spent a half hour on the phone with Apple support, and he concluded that the AX was defective. I exchanged it, and am still having the same problem. HELP PlEASE!

That's the problem. Even with no base stations available you should eventually within a few minutes get a self-assigned IP of 169.x.x.x!

Maybe you could manually configure an IP but that doesn't answer what's wrong. How about a simple test - create a new Location in Network System Preferences and see if that helps. If it doesn't then maybe a re-install of Airport or System software would help. If the Airport shows up as an available network port then the card is probably OK.

My wife and I bought two new Macbooks at Best Buy on December 28, 2006. On the first day, I set them both up to work with our 2WIRE wireless router, and they both worked flawlessly.
However, on January 27, 2007, my wife started her MacBook, tried to select the wireless router in the Airport drop down menu (like she always has done before with no problem), and received the following error message:

I am having the same problem. I have an access point in my living room and a homework desk in my bedroom. My desk is maybe thirty feet from the access point through one wall. The desk does sit in front of a window. When I try to use my PowerBook at my homework desk I can, intermittently, pick up three access points: mine and two others. The two others are on the same channel as each other, but that should not be interfering with my access point and certainly shouldn't be causing it to disappear from the list all together.
Hoping that my signal just wasn't reaching well enough (the antenna on the AP was not very prominent) I bought a 6dBi antenna for it. My PowerBook has always worked in the living room and certainly works there now. I do get a much stronger signal in my bedroom but I still can't use the laptop on my homework desk.
What doesn't make any sense in all of this is that the wall in my room with the window is the same wall in the living room where there is a large sliding glass door. So, if the interfering signal is coming from outside it should be affecting the living room as well. I am at my wits end on this one.

I just got my mac back from getting fixed for harddrive problems and now I'm trying to connect to the internet. Before I'd have some problems with losing connectivity but I always could connect. Now as I'm trying to connect to my wireless access point under the list of airport networks, it literally, right after I type in the WEP password, gives me the error message There was an error joining the airport network "2WIRE532". It looks like it doesn't even try to connect as fast as it does it. I need to know what's happening, I really want this mac mini networked to my network on my windows xp os computer.

I'm having the same problem. The only thing that was different was that we installed a new update from Apple for Quicktime.... then the next day it kept asking for a password (it didn't before) and then when it was entered, it gave me the same error message just a different network name.

I use a wireless adsl modem router (Philips). I can only connect via wireless to this router without encryption.
As soon as I use WEP or WPA encryption, I get the error message "There was an error joining the Airport network".

Do not overlook the possibility that the router itself may be incompatible or may require a firmware update to work properly. You should configure the router to use WPA2, preferably, as this is the most compatible form of encryption with Airports.

Hi there
I am French in London for an internship. I took a flat to share with an other girl. My father advised me to take a Mac for my specific utilisation (internet, music, movies...) and Macs are so cool exept for internet in my case. It doesn't work at all. The network of my landlord is hidden. So, I go in "other", I type manually the network name and the WEP password... Always the same message : There was an error joining the Airport network "NameOfTheNetwork". I tried several times with always the unlucky result.
My landlord said that there wasn't this kind of problem with her other flatmates before me...
I am pratically sure that the problem doesn't comme from my Mac because I reached to join an unprotected other network which appear sometimes (but the signal is not enought strong).
Is there an incompatibility between my Mac and the setup Network? And what do I have to to do to fix it?
I visited a lot of forums but :
1-I didn't find any topics on my specific problem
2-There explanations (when the topic is closed to my issue) are not clear and seem not to correspond to my issue.

This confirms it is a WEP issue.
You will need to find the HEX key.
One of the problems with WEP is that the actual standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
In order to make things easier for people, vendors use certain algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords (or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling people to use simple memorable WEP password rather than lengthy HEX keys.
The problem is that different vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be hashed differently on a Netgear client and vice versa.
One thing is a 13 character 128 bit WEP password will be hashed by all vendors in the same way (if you use 40bit WEP then a 5 character password is required).
Though sometimes not even that works and the HEX key must be used regardless.

New Macbook - "There was an error joining the Airport network..."

Hey,
Just bought a new macbook which comes with an Airport Extreme card. This has worked perfectly with my home router (Belkin Mimo) and my work router (unknown) as well as in various train stations and public places. However I'm currently staying at my parents house and I can't connect to their router (3Com Office Connect ADSL Wireless 11g Firewall Router). Originally I thought this was an encryption issue - my parents use a WEP password rather than more sophisticated encryption. However even after making it an open network I still get this familiar error message. I was originally able to log onto a neighbouring "Apple Network" which made me think it was just down to this particular router however I can now longer connect to this. Is Airport Extreme compatible with all networks or only the newest? Are there Mac/PC issues here? Or do you think I need to get my macbook to Apple to see if the Extreme card is faulty? I can still use this router via ethernet.

im running a linksys wireless router with mac filtering, no password. network works well, filters other people fine, allows me to connect...usually. both mac id's for the PB are in there, ethernet and airport. I can connect wirelessly sometimes and hold the connection for varying lengths of time. hardwired is always perfect. I've searched extensively for answers before bothering all you wonderful people and apparently its an issue related to the computer going to sleep. upon waking up it sees all the networks in range (townhomes, so there are about 6 networks at max) including mine. i try to connect and it gives me the "error joining network" message. I've tried turning airport on and off, restarting computer, and router. nothing seems to do the trick every time, it just randomly will work again. router reset works the best overall but ireally dont want to keep having to do that all the time. Is there any way to fix this issue? thanks in advance for all the help

Silly question first ... do you have a 2.4 Ghz phone or does your neighbor have a teenager with one? Maybe try changing the channel on the linksys.
I used to live with my sister whose phone would knock out my signal on a regular basis and that's the message I would get.

I am recently having a problem as my powerbook cannot connect to wireless network at school. I went to the Help desk at school, but they were not useful at all by blunting saying that they are no mac users.
Here is a few things that might be helpful to know.
1) my powerbook is G4 12inc (OS X 10.4.11)
2) my powerbook could connect to the wireless network without any problems up until last week. (I did have some issue with wifi in the past but it was resolved by turning off the airport for about 10 mins, and turing it back on)
3) my powerbook however can still connect to other wifi at home or at my friends house (so, this is not my computer issue)
4) other people (mac users) in school don't have the same problem as mine (the wifi source seems to be ok)
I cannot trouble shoot since my computer is cool with other wifi except my school network, and other mac users seem to be fine with the school network.
HELPPPPP PLEASE.. I don't want to go back to the help desk again in school.

IMac can't get online: "There was an error joining the Airport network "X"

This didn't use to happen, but now I can't get my iMac (Intel) online. We have a wireless network that works on all the other computers in the house (currently 3). My laptop can be placed on the same desk and connect to our network without any trouble, but the iMac won't. The iMac picks up 8 other networks in the Airport menu--one of which has no security but still doesn't connect to the Internet--but our network's name does not appear in the list and repeated attempts to write it in while choosing "other" lead to the error message in the subject line. The Powerbook, however, picks up 2-4 other networks and always has 4 bars for our network.
In the past I've been able to correct this by restarting the iMac, but that no longer works--only other change noted is the increase in other networks in the neighborhood.
Any one have any ideas about how to remedy this?

Airport displays "There was an error joining the Airport network iBook"

First my iBook would no longer access my printer via airport - it said no connection, tho nothing was changed. But Airport still connected to the Net. Today neither one works. I've checked all the Sharing etc. settings and they seem correct.

The iBook is connected via Airport and the iMac via Ethernet. I don't know what I did in the Network and Airport screens but both the Net and printing are now working again. I thought neither Mac was a base station - just the Linksys broadband router I use. It turns out the network WAS called "iBook"

I got a mayday call from a friend with an iBook G4 and wonder if anyone here can help me help him solve this problem. He purchased and set up a Netgear wireless router at home about a year ago and up until a few days ago was able to connect fine wirelessly both at work and at home.
For the past few days, when he attempts to connect to his wireless network at home he receives the message "There was an error joining the network X" We checked the settings and Airport is on and active and his network's name shows up in the list of choices, but any time he connects he is receiving the error message.
He uses an access list so only he and his wife's computers can connect and deleted his iBook's MAC address, re-added it, restarted and still is receiving the error message.
He doesn't use any type of WEP or security, just the access list. Does anyone have any idea why this would just start happening? His other laptop (an iBook clamshell running OS9) is working just fine.

One possibility is that a neighbor or two has recently gone wireless recently. WiFi has had a huge surge of popularity just the past year. People tend to leave their base stations set to transmit on channel 6 as a default, which can result in interference. Try a different channel, like 1 or 11.

Hello,
my girlfriend today bought her first mac. An iMac 20" C2D.
She was uncertain about it because she's a long time windows user but in the end she decided to switch to osx, oh happy day.
At first boot there was immediately a problem. The iMac could see the wireless network (usr5450 access point) but when it tries connecting to it after 20 secs it gives this error message: "There was an error joining the network usr5450".
So we decided to skip the network setup it during first boot and to do it later inside osx with more options.
NO WAY.
I'm clueless.
The network is NOT protected by wep or wpa (her sister's new out of the box vista/vaio connected immediately...oh, the horror!) and I was able to connect with my macbook pro automatically.
Every computer in her house connect wirelessly without problems execpt her new iMac.
I run an hardware test. Passed without errors.
We installed Osx update combo 10.4.9 and AirPort Extreme Update 2007-002. No change.
The network is like that: modem-dlink switch-us robotics 5450 access point.
Please, she's already regretting buying a mac, any help would be very appreciated.

Check to see if there is a firmware update available for the router.
The "there was an error" message you saw usually indicates something in the combination of the password and security method selected was not entered accurately or could not be accepted for some reason.
First, turn on AirPort using its menu bar icon.
Then open the Network panel of System Preferences. Click the "Assist me..." button at the bottom and click the blue "Assistant..." button in the drop-down box. This will open the Network Setup Assistant. Click the "Continue" button, then target "I use AirPort" and continue on to setup this new "location" within your iMac's Network perferences. Does this work for you? If not, what message do you get, or where do you run into a roadblock?

I'm sure this has been posted here a hundred times already, but I couldn't locate a thread, so here goes...
I tried to install a WEP password on my ZyXEL P-330W wireless router the other day and the thing crashed. Now it shows up on my Airport selection menu as "802.11g-SSID" instead of "ZyXEL". I tried resetting it but no luck. It will no longer connect to the internet.
So... I assumed it was fried and went out and bought a Belkin wireless router (part #F5D7230-4). I used their Install Wizard to get things going but the program crashed everytime I started it up. Not too impressive right out of the box! I called customer service and reached someone in India or Outer Mongolia apparently who couldn't understand English. So, I gave up on that idea and instead used my Windoze PC to set up the router and then set a WEP password.
Now I can access the Belkin wirelessly with the PC but when I try to connect with any of my Macs (Intel) I get a message saying "There was an error joining the Aiport network XXXX" or something to that effect. I have very faithfully entered the WEP password each time. Of course the error message doesn't tell me if the error is in my password or what, so I have nowhere to go at this point.
Any suggestions?

on the mac, try entering your WEP password with a dollar $ sign at the beginning of the password.
Can you connect properly if you have WEP turned off?
Have you cleared out Keychain Access (use the KeychainFirstAid )
Have you repaired permissions (in disk Utlity)
