Express to Basestation / WDS Problems

Hi there
To solve the widely discussed Aiport Problem under 10.5 i connected my iMac and a mini to two different Airport Express Stations, using the ethernet port.
AirPort Cards are disabled on both machines, so technically this is an ethernet connection (as far as the computers are concerned.)
The internet speed drop from AEBS to Express 1 is about 60%
Distance between the two access points: 3 m, free line of sight in the same room.
The internet speed drop from AEBS to Express 2 is about 50%
Distance between the two access points: 5 m, different room, 1 brick wall.
Streaming movies via iTunes using Front Row is still downright impossible.
I was trying this setup because I need the mini in the other room to access my library on my iMac.
No success so far.
Could this be solved using a different Version of Fimware for the AirPort?
2X AirPort Express: Fimware Version 6.3
1X AEBS: Fimware Version: 5.7
Thanks for any help.

I would try setting a local DNS server as suggested by Erik W
It may not be your problem but it may help and it is simple and foolproof - it fixed my problem when nothing else would
Try Erik's solution - it fixed internet access for me -- in this thread -- http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1225208&tstart=0
Larry:
In my case, this is an issue with the DNS Server. In my set-up, I had a G5 with intermittent access, and a MacBook Pro & iMac G5 with no problems. There is only one difference in the configurations. The MBP and iMac had additional DNS addresses added into their network configuration from my last ISP. I had manually entered them, and never removed them. When I added the same DNS Servers to the G5, problem solved. When I removed them from the MBP, problem appears. This was not an issue in Tiger, and although I'm not sure why, I have determined a few other workarounds and contributors.
First, in the Network Preferences, you can hit the Advanced... button and click the DNS tab to see your DNS Servers. Likely, you only see 10.0.1.1 or something similar which means the computer is getting DNS info (routing to internet servers) based on what the Airport Extreme/Express or other wireless router is sending through DHCP. If you have the actual DNS Server addresses from your ISP (or any ISP) you can add them here and probably fix your problem. Add them and click OK, followed by Apply.
Now to the root of the problem in my case. By opening the Airport Admin Utility, and selecting my base station and clicking on the Internet tab, I can see that my Base Station is serving up two DNS Servers. One is it's own router number which falls into the 192.168.xxx.xxx range. I know this isn't a valid number. The second is the actual number from Cox (my ISP).
So when the computer relies on DNS info delivered through Airport using DHCP, it is getting a bogus number first, but it keeps trying. Eventually, it might look at the 2nd option, which explains the delays. If you enter the DNS info directly into the System Preferences, it seems to ignore the DHCP version and go right to the site you want.
Check with your ISP for a list of DNS Servers. Any server will work, just be sure it is from a reputable source. If your Airport shows two servers like mine, use the Network Utility to do a look-up on the non-192.168 number and see if it comes back as your ISP. If so, then you can probably just insert it as the first server on the Airport or add it to the Mac with the issues.
I hope this makes sense and addresses your issue. It sure did help with mine.

  • Time Capsule WDS Problem After Firmware (7.6.1) Update

Some time ago, when I first setup my Time Capsule, setting up WDS with it and my Express went really smoothly - really impressed how it went.
I applied an firmware update last night 7.6.1 to the TC and the AE. What a mistake. I've spent most of the morning trying to get WDS to work correctly. AE can't find TC with WDS, WDS error on TC when ever I change it's settings - it's flashing yellow now even though not 10 minutes ago everything was fine? It's a shame because each device has worked perfectly for over a year - when ever I installed them.
Can anyone shed any light on the WDS problem? Has anyone else experienced any problems since the update?
I've been reading about "Extending The Network" with wireless-N, supposed to be much easier, but not all my devices are N rated. Also I know for a fact that the first time I set this (WDS) up it was so easy - the "wizard" configured everything within 15 minutes. It's almost as if the option automatically setup WDS has been removed. Am I imagining things?

I tried to change some settings on the TC and the AE would no longer connect. It seems everytime I make changes to either the TC or the AE it cause (yellow flashing light) problems. Decided to fall back to firmware 7.6, I've successfully managed to update settings on the TC without there being any problems.
Don't want to waste any more time messing about with network, fingers crossed until the next firmware update.

  • How do I set up my printer on my AE Express in a WDS environment?

How do I set up my printer on my AE Express in a WDS environment? I can set it up to be used on my base station but I want to be able to plug in my printer in another AE Express which is currently set up as a repeater. Is this possible? Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks.

More info...  Printer is a Cannon ip6000d.  When I try to add the printer from different computers, they can not "see" the printer.  The printer does show up on my AirPort utility, but when I try to add the printer  from other computers, it can't be found.  Is there a special path for it the computers to find the printer?
Also, the light is showing green and has no errors showing in the AirPort utility.

having trouble with my Airport Utility not supporting either of my Airports Expresses or Basestation. Do i have to update Firmware of airports or is the issue with my version of Utility which i believe is the latest. Thank you.

AirPort Utility in Mountain Lion will not support the older versions of the AirPort Express.....model numbers A1084 and A1088. Check on the side of the Express for the model number.
In addition, AirPort Utility in Mountain Lion will not support the older "round" or "dome" shaped versions of the AirPort Extreme.
Can you check to see how your devices might be affected?

  • Boost network signal using AirPort Express without using WDS?

I want to boost the signal on my network using my airport express without setting up a WDS network, is this possible?
I had previously set up my Time Capsule as a WDS main and my airport express as a WDS remote, but this slowed the network down dramatically.

If you have an AirPort Express 802.11n, you can configure it to "extend a wireless network" and maintain "n" speeds on the network with a minimum of bandwidth loss.
Check the model number of your Express is you are not sure which version you have. Look on the side of the device for the Model Number. Model No. A 1264 is the "n" version.
Post back if you have this version and need more info on the "extend" setup.

  • AirPort Express with PC -- Setup Problems

    Hi
Just wanted to share my experience -- I wasted most of a day getting my AirPort Express network up. Problem was, the setup software assumes that you have a wireless card in your PC. If, like me, you have a simple ethernet connection to a wireless router, then the program apparently has no way of finding the AirPort Express.
After hours of fumbling with suggestions on this forum, I finally found the tech support number and we figured out that I needed to run the setup program on my laptop, which does have a wireless card.
I would STRONGLY encourage Apple to re-write its setup software to recognize this very common hardware configuration and work with it, lest more customers waste more of their time. I was THIS CLOSE to angrily returning the box. Now that it's up, I really love it, but I almost didn't get there.

I had the same problem as you did with the setup of the AX from a PC connected to the router by Ethernet. I was able to run the setup by using the "Other ..." button at the bottom of the Base Station Chooser and giving it the IP address of the AX.
Does iTunes on the PC connected to the router by Ethernet find the AX? It doesn't for me. It works great from my other 3 PCs that are connected to the network by wireless. Of course, the PC with the problem is the one across the family room from the stereo ...

  • AirPort Express/Time Capsule WDS Network - will this work?

Have recently bought a Time Capsule but realised that it won't do what I want with my Linksys ADSL wireless router. I think I understand how to make it work with an AirPort Express, but would appreciate it if someone could confirm my ideas before I buy even more hardware!
My situation is that my ADSL line comes in to the house on the ground floor. There's no extension phone sockets and I don't want or need them. My home office is on the first floor.
What I want is to have my ADSL modem and a wireless device on the ground floor, the Time Capsule in the home office with mac and XBOX making wired connections to it, and a USB printer also connected.
If I get a DSL modem and then connect an AirPort Express to that, can I then set up WDS so that the Time Capsule becomes an extension of the WLAN and I can connect the devices to the Time Capsule via wires? Or do I need an AirPort Extreme to do this instead of Express? Or is it just plain not going to work?
Thanks in advance for any advice!

I am using a Time Capsule with an 802.11g Airport Express with a WDS network. In my case the Time Capsule is the main device and the Airport Express is the remote device, but I'd think it would work the other way. Just make sure you're using "Airport Utility", not "Airport Admin Utility" to configure it.
One other thing: I found it easiest to reset both devices to factory default settings and use the Airport Utility wizard to set up the WDS network on both devices. Good luck!

  • Airport Extreme (N) to Airport Express (G) WDS Problems

Recently got an Airport Extreme n.
Trying to use and older Airport Express to extend network / use for AirTunes.
Everytime I reconfigure the Extreme for WDS / Allow network to be extended it seems to switch to 5ghz only.
loses all G connections - ie only Apple TV still connecting!
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

I have an old AEX, and could never get WDS to work with my extreme-n either.
Apple is moving away from the old WDS to the new "extend a wireless network" mode. This is more evident in the AEBS (dual-band), WDS is now a hidden option.
You have two choices, one is to use the AEX-g in client mode for AirTunes streaming, or get a new AEX-n to extend the n network.

  • Airport Extreme n + Express + WDS = Problems

I'm stumped and looking for some help. I have an Extreme Base station located in our home office / refinished basement downstairs and an express upstairs in our kitchen. Right now we have 2 laptops running off of the network, 1 mac and 1 pc. Many times when I am upstairs and I open up my powerbook it doesn't get an internet connection. The express is green and the base station is green. I then need to walk my laptop dowstairs to get a signal and then walk back upstairs to use the internet.
All software updates are in place and when I go to my airport utility I rarely see both devices at the same time. Upstairs shows the express and downstairs shows the extreme. The distance between the 2 devices is about 60 feet by walking... otherwise they're actually above one another... about 15-20 feet away. A few questions:
    1. Shouldn't I always see both?
    2. Many posts talk of security issues - should I adjust mine one way or another?
    3. Do I need another Extreme in the mix as a relay?
I've been a mac user for 15 years and this one has certainly got me. Maybe a reinstall with Leopard will answer all of my questions??? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Two words popped out when I read your post: basement & kitchen. Both of these are high potentials areas for Wi-Fi interference.
Before considering adding additional base stations to your WDS, I suggest you perform a simple site survey, using utilities like the following to determine potential areas of interference, and then, try to either eliminate or significantly reduce them where possible:
    o MacStumbler, or
    o iStumbler

  • Please Help: old Airport Extreme, new Aiport Express, want to WDS

    Hi,
I'm sorry if this topic has been covered before, but I can't seem to find a post with my exact situation. I have a G4 desktop (no Airport card) connected to an Airport Extreme Base Station (about 2 years old) which is connected to a 2wire DSL model. My wife and I have been able to use the wireless network in our house for a year or two now with our laptops (PowerBook and few month old MacBook Pro). We've been able to connect to the internet and can print to our laser printer with no problem. However our living room is just out of range (one bar and usually drops out) so I thought extending the range of the Base Station with an Airport Express would allow us better access from the place we hang out in the most.
After reading the very sketchy start up manual as well as trying various combinations of steps posted here, I am still having trouble setting this thing up. Simply plugging in the AX and using Airport Set Up Assistant, I was able to create a WDS and add the AX as a remote station by entering its MAC address (it was not recognized automatically). However, when pushing "update" a message came up saying the AX needed to be set up manually.
So, I realized maybe I needed to plug the ethernet cable directly into the AX and use the Aiport Assistant. I tried that once and nothing happened. Yellow light flashing. I tried it again adjusting a setting for "Join an existing network" and named the network the same as our already established network. The light turned green! So, not knowing what to do next (Hello, Apple! Please write better instructions) I crossed my fingers and unplugged the Ethernet cable and put it back in the existing Base Station. Did that. Still green! Then I had to move the AX from the office out into the hallway toward the living room. Cross fingers, unplugged AX and ran it down hallway. Plugged it in, wait for Yellow light, hey it turned green! I took the MacBook to the living room, turned it on, 4 bars, cool! Started Safari and.... nothing. No web page loaded. No email. Nada. Great looking bars, though.
So, frustrated, I unplugged the AX and just left it a day. Last night, I moved it back to the office and tried to see if I had a setting wrong. Create new network? Join existing network? Same or different channel as Base Station? Use password security on AX? on just the Base Station? both? Why doesn't the manual mention these things? I even tried soft reset and hard reset. I could never get the green light to come on again.
Does anytone know where I find simple step-by-step instructions to help me? I thought Apple was supposed to be "easy". Am I missing something? My G4 desktop does not have an Aiport card, so I can't configure both Stations without having the Ethernet cable plugged directly into either gadget.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Yeah, Duane posted the link to the good directions. The directions given in the printed manual for the base station and the online help for the base station is inadequate when it comes to WDS set up.
I have an Airport Extreme and two Airport Express. When I was setting up WDS, it did take a while because certain errors did keep coming up. But eventually it worked. I now get the hang of it.
One difference that kept me really confused but now I understand is the difference between relay and remote base station.
    Picture these two diagrams
    A) Airport Extreme <--> Express1 <--> Express2
    B) Airport Extreme <--> Express2
The <--> signs mean wireless connection.
In picture (A), the Extreme is broadcasting to Express1 which then relays the signal to Express2. In this case, Express1 is a relay base station and Express2 is a remote base station.
In picture (B), the Extreme is broadcasting to Express2. In this case, the Express2 is also a remote base station and not a relay. There is not relay base station in (B).
I don't know why that kept me so confused but once I got it, I got it. Hope this helps for your WDS set up.

  • WDS problem, Deauthenticating with station 00:1f:f3:c4:9d:07(reserved 2).

    Hi
I'm working a on problem with a WSD-network, consisting of 3 brand new devices, a Timecapsule, an Airport Extreme and an Airport Express, all running the latest firmware, 7.4.1.
I've configured the Airport Extreme to be the main-station connected to the internet. When I add a second device to the WDS, I get the following in the log on either the AE or AX, depending on which devices is connected.
    Mar 12 16:26:13 Severity:5 Deauthenticating with station 00:1f:f3:c4:9d:07 (reserved 2).
    Mar 12 16:26:15 Severity:5 Associated with station 00:1f:f3:c4:9d:07
    Mar 12 16:26:19 Severity:5 Disassociated with station 00:1f:f3:c4:9d:07
I've tried resetting all devices to default, doing manuel and guided installs, running with 2 or 3 devices, but I still get the errors, and an unstable network.
At times it seems like there's a network-loop, as a constant 'ping' increases in latency over time from 20ms to 10.000ms, but reconnecting one of the devices, seems to fix this problem at random.
Main(Airport Extreme) is running 802.11n(b/g compatible), as there's no other options.
I'm using WPA2 Personal as security.
Any clues to the problem is much appreciated,
    Best regards

Having a very similar issue as well. I am using an Airport Extreme as my base station, with two Airport Express units, one as a relay and one as a remote. My house is pretty big, so the remote is actually out of the range of the Extreme base station, hence the relay, which sits halfway in between. I have an office in the house that is in the room with the remote Express, and every 15 minutes or so, like clockwork, I have to turn off the airport in my iMac, then turn it back on to get connectivity restored. All while the light on all the devices remain green. The signal will just drop, the airport utility will see absolutely nothing. I've spent the last two weeks going through all the google hits, and forums with this issue, and nothing seems to have worked. Good luck guys, it looks like with all the great things Apple has done, they must be really stumped on this one, for no resolution has ever surfaced that was the end all be all fix. Here's a look at my log from the AE in the office:

  • Can't extend my existing Express b/g WDS network with new Express n

    Hi all,
For the past 2 years I have been using a very simple Airport Express b/g wireless network setup. I have two of the older generation b/g Expresses and I've created a WDS network where the main Express is connected to my broadband modem and participates to my WDS as "main" and the relay Express is configured to participate to this WDS as "relay". This setup works flawlessly and I was very happy with it. Note: the firmware version on both units is 6.3.
Recently, I wanted to extend the range of this network. I've bought and received the newer generation Express n. To my surprise, setting it up to extend my already existing b/g WDS is simply impossible. Below is a summary of the situation:
    1) The firmware was updated to 7.3.1 as soon as I opened the Airport Utility.
    2) The automatic setup wizard in Airport Utility was incapable of extending my current b/g WDS with the Express n. (Green light on but no wifi coming from the new Express n).
    3) I've tried countless times to reset and manually reconfigure the new Express n as "remote" in the WDS configuration panel and connect it to either my "main" Express (b/g) or the "relay" Express (b/g). Both "main" and "relay" Expresses (b/g) were also configured to extend WDS to the new "remote" Express n. I've tried to scrupulously follow instructions found in other posts/discussion forums on how to do that.
    4) I then tried to make the new Express n as the "main" base station in the WDS. I could successfully connect it to the Internet (Express n connected to broaddand modem via ethernet) and receive wifi from it, but it was impossible to establish a working WDS with my other two b/g Expresses, both reconfigured as "relay" and "remote" in the WDS (again using the instructions from people who succeeded in having both b/g and n units in the same WDS).
    5) Adding to all the difficulties in configuring, hard-reseting and reconfiguring each Express, I would very often be in a situation where Airport Utility only sees 1, 2 or none of my 3 Expresses. Rebooting my Mac was the only thing that enabled me to see them again.
    6) After about 7 hours trying to figure out how to work this thing without any good results, I've decided to call out for help. In my situation, there seems to be an intrinsic incompatibility between older b/g Express and the newer Express n, at least for WDS network setup.
If anyone is in the same situation and has found a solution to the problem your help will be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Good news everyone: don't despair, there is hope! After nearly 10 hours of configuration, I finally have a WDS with all three AXs (two b/gs and one n). woohoo!
OK, so here's how I did it:
The main idea here was to replace my "relay" b/g AX with the new n AX.
    1) The first thing I did was to reconfigure my "main" b/g AX (the one connected to my modem) so that it can transmit to the new n AX: I simply added the Airport ID of my new n AX in the WDS "remotes" list inside the WDS configuration panel of the "main" b/g AX. I then did an Update Reboot on the "main" b/g AX.
    2) After that, I did a Hard reset on the new n AX and plugged it near my old "relay" b/g AX. I then went in Airport Utility, scanned for the new n AX and asked the wizard to "Replace an existing Base Station". It gives you a list of all the base stations your computer has interacted with. I selected the old "relay" b/g AX. The wizard then asked to unplug the base station that is going to be replaced. Did that, and then I did an Update Reboot on the newly configured "relay" n AX.
    3) I've rechecked the configuration of the new "relay" n AX, and to my surprise, it wasn't exactly the same as the one for my old "relay" b/g AX. Specifically, I had to manually reconfiguring the whole WDS settings. I had to tell it to "Participate in a WDS", re-input the Aiport ID of the "main" AX and also put the Airport ID of the "remote" AX (the old b/g I'd replaced see below - 5) in the "remotes" list. Once that was re-configured, I updated and rebooted.
    4) At that point I had wifi coming from: my "main" b/g AX and now my new "relay" n AX. Yeay! that was the first time I had interaction between b/g and n units.
    5) I then went to reconfigure the old "relay" b/g AX and set it up as "remote" and connected it via WDS to the new "relay" n AX. Configuring a b/g AX is a piece of cake compared to the newer n AX!
    6) I am very happy to report that it all simply works now! All three AXs are happily talking to each other now. Hooray!
I am almost clueless on why performing these specific steps made it work but it did. My reasoning is that by letting Airport Utility automatically configure the n AX with the configuration data of an old b/g AX it might have changed some settings that were too hidden from view when done manually.
Thanks to dchao99 for input, and Mike hang in there. Try to follow my steps, it might also work for you!
Good luck to all of you.

  • WDS problems - using expresss to extend etreme(n)

I just upgraded my old airport extreme to the new extreme(n) - I was hoping to to get better coverage in my house and faster connection for @TV.
My problem is that I had previously used an aiport express as WDS to extend the range of the network. Now, the express does not seem to work. Issues:
    1. I used the new airport utility (not the old airport admin utility) to set up the express to WDS from the new network. Should I use the older airport admin utility?
    2. While the setup seemed to go ok, I get a flashing amber light on both the extreme and airport, and I can no longer find the express on the utility despite many scans. I got an message in airport utility that the exteme had an error setting with the WDS.
    3. Oddly, despite the flashing amber light, my macbook seems to pick the internet fine (and yes I've checked that it is picking up the right network).
Bottom line - Does the express work with the extreme n. Is there something new I'm supposed to do to get this to work?
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Tony

    Tony,
A couple of comments. If you do not have a Intel Core 2 Duo machine and I don't believe I saw any other computers in your system. The new 802.11n Extreme has better speed and greate range only if your system is basically entirely "n" capable. A Core Duo machine is at best "G".
You need to factory reset the Express. Take a paper clip, unplug the Express, press in the reset button and while holding in the reset button plug the Express back in. It will flash green several times then flash amber, continue holding in the reset button until the Express' light turns solid amber. Then you can release the reset button. Give it about five minutes to reinitialize. Once it initializes, run the Airport Utility and it should show your Express' factory ID. You should be able to add it as part of a WDS is you so desire. Once you've reset your Express and join the system, the Express' amber light should go green. Just a note, if you did not reset your Express the Extreme will not recognize it as part of the system and it most likely will not show up in the Airport Utility.
Your Extreme's amber light is probably flashing because you didn't set security to WPA or WEP. If you open Airport Utility, chose the base station and go to the Summary tabl. Double click on the Base Station Status light which should be flashing amber. It should tell you what the problem is but as I said most likely no security has been set. If you wish to run your system with no security you can turn off the flashing amber light via Airport Utility.

  • Even more bizarre WDS problems

I am setting up a home WDS network with 3 bases, one AEBSn and two expresses. I have all three in the same room. Last night, they were all working. This morning, Airport Utility cannot find one of the expresses. iStumbler shows all three bases with signals between 50-70%.
So what is the problem here? Is the express faulty? It seems to be broadcasting fine.
Before anyone else suggests it, there are no other wireless networks in range and no sources of wifi interference in the room.
Just to test what would happen, I restarted the working express. Nothing happened and I still have a missing express.
Then I looked at the AEBS. It is reporting that the missing express is a wireless client with a signal of -61, noise of -104 and rate of 1. The signal/noise numbers are close to the other clients, but the other clients all have rates of 54, 54 and 24. One of the clients is the working express, and I guess the other two are my computers.
I restarted the AEBS and the express simultaneously, and that allowed the other express to become available in Airport Utility. Now, all three bases are back up again.
Someone please tell me what is going on here. I can't start to distribute the bases around the house if they won't even work in the same room.

I have been having a similar issue. I have two AEBSn and one express. Every few days one of the clients will disappear and not be found by the airport utiltiy. Like posnera, the missing client shows up aith a rate of 1. I also may or may not get an error message. Often the light is green on bosth the main AEBS and the missing client.
At first I thought it might have been a range issue but it is happening even when they're all in the same room. Restarting the missing client does the trick but I can't figure out why I keep getting a dropout.
    It's driving me crazy...
