Express to PC question

I have a PC downstairs which has no wireless card and is too far away from my Time Capsule for me to run a ethernet cable as it would look a complete mess (So the wife tells me). Currently I use a powerline connection to get internet access on the PC and would like to change that. I am wondering if I can install an Airport Express near the PC and run an ethernet cable to it directly to get a connection?

Yes, if they are within wireless range of each other. Click here and follow the instructions.

  • Final Cut Express? Many Questions.

I'm interested in shooting a short film in the near future. I'm looking to invest in a camera that will be under $1000.00. I'm also looking to use Final Cut Express to edit the footage. I believe Imovie will not offer enough editing options, and FCP will offer more than I need. I'm looking mainly to do simple cuts, transitions, put my footage in letterbox mode with the hopes of it looking like a real film, etc.
    So here are my questions:
First off: With what I've written above, am I right in thinking FCE is a better option than FCP? Keep in mind I've never really done any work in video editing, but am anxious to purchase a new camera, shoot my film, edit it myself, etc.
Second: Will a HD camcorder work well with FCE? I'm currently looking to purchase a Canon HV 20. Link to the camera itself:
    http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=177&mo delid=14869
Third: I want to purchase a laptop to use FCE and edit my future film. Will a black Macbook work well (upgraded with 4 GB of RAM)? Strong enough graphics card on that macbook? Or am I forced to move up to a Macbook Pro? (My thinking is that the Macbook Pro is unnecessary unless I want to use FCP.) Correct?
Answers to these questions and any additional advice would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!!!

    Hi(Bonjour)!
    HDV and FCE HD:
I shoot and edit in HDV with FCE HD without problem, but there are some points that need clarification.
    1) HDV is converted upon capturing process within FCE to Apple Intermediate Codec movie. Regular HDV take the same amount of hard disk space as regular DV, but AIC needs aroung 49 Gig/hour of space.
    2) HDV colorspace and compression sheme doesn't support well color correction or compositing (at least not as well than DV).
    3) Rendering process is very very long one, and to play realtime effect you need a pretty fast CPU and many RAM.
    4) A dedicated external hard drive runnig at 7200 rpm is a must to avoid drop frame on playback/capture/print.
    5) Print to tape must be done overnight because it took a rule of 5 to 6 time the length of your sequence to operate.
    6) HDV is astoning when viewed in a 1 to 1 pixel ratio on your computer screen, but it take at least 1920 X1080 pixel to do so. Apple Cinema HD display from 23" can do the job.
    7) There is not easy/affortable way to distribute HDV on DVD right now. Your only option is to use your camcorder as VCR hooked on HD TV set, or use an Apple TV.
    8) Final Cut Pro (part of Final Cut Studio 2) handles HDV natively but push hard on CPU. Compressor and DVD studio Pro allows to burn (in some forma right now, but with limitation) HD DVD disk.
    9) I shoot in HDV but sometime, I downconvert from camcorder (Sony allows this) to DV upon capturing in DV NTSC in Final Cut Express. The result in a very good image (many pixels shrinked to fit the DV dimensions) in a standard def movie distributed on regular DVD or wide screen DVD.
    10) HDV is still captured on tape, despite many manufacturers offer hard drive, DVD or card storing system for ohter flavor of HD like AVCHD. Tape is an affordable way to archive your material.
Final Cut Express HD 4 supports AVCHD.

  • IDRAC 6 Express - Update Firmware Question

    Hello,
does anyone know if updating the iDRAC 6 Express firmware via the web gui causes any issues? I know it needs to reset itself. But I am wondering if it requires a full reboot or does the NIC reboot? Thanks.

I posted a more general question about this is this post (http://community.spiceworks.com/topic/1087984-do-i-really-need-workgroup-agent-license-for-shoretel?.... ) , but unfortunately, it kind of went cold. So, I am reposting with a more condensed question. We have a group of employees that will be hot desking on their phones and will also be using Communicator. I want them to always be logged into a workgroup which I understand canbe done fromDirector. My question is,do the users that are logged in via Director stay logged in when they hot desk from phone to phone? Assuming that is the case, do I need workgroup access licenses if they are never going to be logged out of the workgroup?

  • Express/Extreme Connection Question

can I use my Express to connect to my home Extreme network to use as an AirPlay speaker connection and, at a later time, use it alone as a network for when I travel by plugging it into an ethernet cable in a hotel etc?

Open AirPort Utility, select the AirPort Express and click Manual Setup
Shift the focus of your eyes from the window in the center of the screen up to the very top of the screen and you will see the AirPort Utility menu items in the same toolbar as the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen.
Click the Base Station menu item at the top of the screen
    Select Manage Profiles

  • Airport Express ethernet port question

I have an airport extreme base station already, but it struggles to reach my home office from the living room (where the cable connection comes into the house).
Also, my wife's PC doesn't do 802.11n, so I have to run the wireless network in backwards-compatibility mode.
If I buy an Airport Express to extend the network, can I plug my wife's PC into the ethernet socket, or is that port only for WAN connections?

If I buy an Airport Express to extend the network, can I plug my wife's PC into the ethernet socket, or is that port only for WAN connections?
Yes. If the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) is configured as either a relay/remote base station in a WDS with your Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS), its Ethernet port will be enabled for network (& Internet) access.

    Hello,
Senario: If using an Airport Express to extend the wireless internet capabilities in a given area ( Internet is provided wirelessly from a pimary Airport Base Station to this Airport Express). Is this airport express able to also share internet/networking abilities through its ethernet port? I hope this is not confusing. I would appreciate your insight and help. Thank you.

  • Logic 8 Pro Installation/ Logic Express 8 uninstallation question

Is there any reason I need to keep Logic Express 8 installed after I install Logic Pro 8 ? I was hoping to free up some space...
I am installing Logic Pro 8 as I type this. I can hardly wait to use it.
    ; )

The easiest way is just to drag the LE folder from Applications into the trash.
There may be some preferences but it doesn't matter if you leave them. Ditto for files in Application Support. There may also be jam packs, templates and other user data lying around but there is no simple way of locating and deleting the lot.
If you're paranoid, use spotlight to find anything with Logic Express in the filename and trash that. Still won't be complete, however.
    Think about this:
You use MS Word. You create lots of docs, download templates, perhaps clip-art and word-art. You create your own dictionary and add auto-correction tables. You customise the program and store things all over the hard drive. No installation program is going to find all the things that you've dotted around. Ditto for Logic Express. Just trash the app and leave the rest to rot. It's a small number of megabytes (unless you've installed Jam Packs) and that's peanuts compared to your likely storage.
    Don't worry; be happy ;o)

  • Extreme & Express (hopefully) simple question

    Hi
I've got an AEBS that I'm trying to connect to an Express to play iTunes on my stereo. Do I also need a PCI Airport card in my G4 to enable this feature?
I thought the AEBS just plugged into the ethernet socket and acted like an external version of an internal Airport card. The Airport icon doesn't show up in the network connection or menu bar.
Bit of a first timer in the whole wireless connection area, does it show? I guess there's a simple answer, help me people.

    No.
I thought the AEBS just plugged into the ethernet
socket and acted like an external version of an
    internal Airport card.
    You're perfectly right.
Here is how your chain should be connected:<pre>
    Ethernet AirPort stereo cable
    Mac ======== AEBS ~~~~~~~ AX ------------ stereo</pre>
    The Airport icon doesn't show
up in the network connection or menu bar.
That's normal. You don't need an AirPort connection from
your Mac to your AEBS. You may use the Ethernet connection.
Your will have to configure your AEBS through your Ethernet
    connection.
I advise you to carefully read your documentation about
the way to make such a configuration.

  • Expression builder Syntax question

In workflow, I want to send an email when a certain date field is populated.
I want this action to execute only when the date is initially populated so I want to use PRE to check to see if the date field was blank before it was populated.
would I check to see if the date field WAS blank by using the following syntax?
    (PRE('<dContract_Execution_Date_ITAG>') IS NULL)
    Or should I use
    (PRE('<dContract_Execution_Date_ITAG>') = "")

Thank you I will try your suggestions. I tried the IS NOT NULL and I kept getting a syntax error. It was driving me nuts, because I was fairly certain it would work.
This is a little off topic, but I've noticed when I enter an expression or copy paste it into expression builder I get a syntax error only to retype the expression (exactly as it was typed previously) and the system will except it. The only thing I can think of is maybe some sort of invisible character is picked up.
This has happened to me numerous times when coding workflow rules. It tends to slow the design process.

  • More Logic Express 7.2 questions

I've used Cubase for some years (and Cakewalk before that) so I consider myself pretty au fait with DAWs, but I have a few basic questions about Logic (I would RTFM from cover to cover if it was paper, but online is not an acceptable substitute in a program of this complexity):
If I record a take in an audio track, and I want to record over the top of it without hearing the previously recorded take. Actually, all I want to be able to do is record into the track. Do I have to set punch points? Can I manually drop in? I don't know how to record over an existing take.
Although the documentation mentions that the FW-1082 can set punch points and locate points, there's no way I can do this. In fact, how do I set locate points, in/out points, etc. either with or without the FW?
Is there any audio scrub function when editing a track? And on the subject of editing, are the edits destructive or non-destructive?
How do I return to my previous start position automatically when I'm not in Cycle mode?
I'm willing to forgive Logic a lot of things - the latency on this system is much better than it is with Cubase, but so many obvious (to me, anyway) things are buried, and the Environment is confusing to the point of driving me to drink.
Many thanks if anyone can answer some of these questions.

Yes, I know about the manual... I've just bought the Martin Sitter Training Guide, though, and I find it incredibly useful - much more than the online PDF (I have enough printed-out manuals from other software lying around the place that I don't necessarily want to print out another 500+ pages). But your point is well-made. I actually write pro audio technical manuals for a living, and I know how difficult it is to get the user to read them.
Of course I searched in the on-line manual, by the way - but the problem is that I sometimes don't know what I'm searching for - Logic's terminology is confusing if you come from another DAW ("markers", "locators", "location points", "song positions" - you get what I mean?). Also the manual is not accurate in places (Audio Input objects, anyone?) and the section on punch-in didn't give any answer at all to my question. In any case, I still didn't find what I'm looking for (to quote U2) in the manuals, but in less than an hour's reading of the Sitter book, I found what I wanted. That must mean something...
Whatever, having found out some things from the book, I am basically a lot more confident about knowing the underpinnings of Logic (the manual is very little help in explaining these - and yes, I did read the first sections - they're mainly "how", not "why" or "what") and I feel I can move forward.
Thanks for your help on the location, anyway. Now if I can only debug the FW-1082's EQ command set to make it work properly...

  • Signal Express project document questions

    Hi,
I'm using Signal Express 2009 to log two current signals(4-20mA) from a NI9219 card mounted on cDAQ9172 chassis.
Signal #1 on NI9219 channel ai1 is a pressure signal, scaled unit for this signal is PSIA
Signal #2 on NI9219 channel ai2 is a differential pressure signal, scaled unit for this signal is inch.water
I have no trouble to view the signals on Data View, both are displayed with the correct value with correct engineering unit shown on Y-axis.
But when I display the two signals in Project Document, wierd thing happened: signal #1 is displayed in correct value but in inch.water; while signal #2 is displayed in correct value but in PSIA.
    Anybody knows what went wrong?

    Hey bon2b,
When I opened your file, The inlet pressure is in psia and the differential pressure is in inches of water in the project documentation. From what I understand, that is what you wanted. Is that correct? If so you might just need to close and reopen it. Are you talking about the compound graph in the project documentation? I dont see any graphs of individual data, so for the compound graphs, both scales are present on the y-axis.

  • More AirPort Express problems and questions - sigh

I finally got my MBP to connect to the Internet yesterday, thanks to lots of help from Tesserex. This evening I tried to connect my partner's MacBook to the network and ended up having to reconfigure the AX because nothing worked again. Now the AX LED is flashing yellow again, and yet I am able to connect to the Internet wirelessly - I am typing this on my MBP. I am indeed confused as I thought the LED should be solid green, indicating good connections all around. Any ideas about this?
I also tried to secure my network with WPA, but this caused everything to screw up again, so here I am with no security and on the Web. Pointers for a newbie would be much appreciated.
I still need to get my partner's notebook to connect to the Web too.
My set up is DSL modem > Ethernet cable to Linksys DSL router > Ethernet cable to Apple Express (AX) port > wireless to MPB (in addition, I have two Ethernet cable connections from the Linksys routher to my two desktop PCs.)
Help would, as always, be much appreciated.
    Holly
MacBook Pro 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo processor with 1 GB DDR2 SDRAM

Ok, the Linksys is a non-wireless router, so we don't need to set up any of the wireless-type (WEP or WPA) on it, however, you may want to consider using MAC filtering. With MAC filtering, only the computer's MAC that have been entered into the filter can access the router. That would mean any other network device would not be able to use this router to access the Internet until their MAC address gets added to the filter. MAC filtering isn't hack-proof, but it will make it harder for amatuers to access your network. (Note: This will only be effective for computers that you will have connected directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Linksys, so you don't need to do this for your wireless computers.)
To setup MAC filtering on the Linksys:
    - Open a web browser and point to 192.168.1.1
    - Enter the Administrator username and password at the prompt. (The default username is blank, and the password is "admin.")
    - Click on the "Advanced" tab.
    - Click on the "Filters" tab to select it.
    - Click on "Edit MAC Filter Setting" button.
    - For each MAC you want to access the router, enter it's respective MAC address into the appropriate window in the following format: nn:nn:nn:nn:nn:nn
To setup wireless security on your AirPort Express Base Station (AX):
    AirPort tab (optional)
    - Create a closed network (checked)
    Change Wireless Security
    - Wireless Security: WPA Personal
    - Network Password: <create a password for your wireless network; this will be the same password that you will enter when you connect to the network>
    - Verify Password: <enter the same password you used in the previous step>
Base Station Options - WAN Ethernet Port
    - Enable SNMP Access (unchecked)
    - Enable Remote Configuration (unchecked)
    - Enable Remote Printer Access (unchecked)
    Wireless Options
    - Transmitter Power: 10% (Note: If you are having any trouble connecting to your wireless network, you should increase this value. The idea is to find the ideal power where only computers in the house can access the wireless network and not your neighbors.)
    Access Control tab (optional)
    - + <add the computer(s) that will access this wireless network>

  • Final Cut Express Audio Listening Question

I just installed Final Cut Express and have imported an iMovie project. When I listen to it the audio does not play. Instead I get a beeping sound. The wave forms show that the audio is there but I can't listen to it and I can't turn off the beeping. Is there an easy explanation for this?
    Many thanks.
BTW, I also exported the iMovie as a quicktime movie and then imported it. Got the same result even though the quicktime movie playes perfectly.

Thanks, that seems to be the problem. Not very satisfactory though.
How do I render the audio as is suggested in the link?

  • Airport express base station question

Since the airport express base station has a dial-up modem v.90 port, does that mean I can connect to dial-up wirelessly? I am getting a powerbook g4 soon, and I am one of the few left that cannot get highspeed in my area, and I want to be able to search the web throughout my house, on my soon to have powerbook. This would be the only reason I would buy this product, so will it work?

So if i get the airbort extreme base station i can
connect to dial-up wirelessly? How much of a loss of
    speed?
None as the wireless speed is much much faster than your dial-up speed.
    Wireless connection 54000 Kbps
    Dialup connection 56Kbps
