Can I upgrade online from Final Cut Express to Final Cut Pro/Studio (like you can from Pro to Studio) or do I need to buy the Studio 2 set to get everything?

Patrick, I don't know if you have any Comp USA stores in your area that are closing(They're closing two near me in MA) But I went in yesterday and bought Final Cut Studio 1 for 40% off. Seemed like a good upgrade path to me...If I decide I need Final Cut Studio 2, I can pay the $499 upgrade and still not pay more than if I bought it new.

Whats the diff between express and pro??

Just wondering what the main diff between the two are. I've used pro at school, but cant afford to get it at home. Will i still be able to use the same audio instruments like the same synths and plug ins??? Also, would i be able to run the program on a mac mini (top of the line)?

All I was saying is that if a person can afford to get Pro, they definitely should. The difference in features adds up to at least the difference in price, if not very much more.
Having said that, Express is good value compared to most other DAW software at that pricepoint, but it is only intended as a 'Lite' version.
Some examples, off the top of my head, of differences not made really clear in the comparison list.
Input Objects:
In Pro you can use Input Objects to monitor incoming signal without rec-enabling a track. That doesn't sound much, on the face of it, but what it means is you can use external FX units (hardware) as inserts in tracks (or busses) just like plugins, and bounce them with the mix. it also means you acn monitor what you are playing into Logic Pro with plugin FX applied, but record dry so you can hear your guitar with the reverb, or whatever, but still have the recorded dry signal so you can change the FX settings later.
Pro has some very handy environment objects. The main one being the Trabsformer object. But also another extremely useful object is TouchTracks.
If you've ever played with Ableton Live you would have noticed you can triger clips with the keyboard in all different ways (loop, gate loop, one shot etc.) Well TouchTracks does that with MIDI regions.(I have a feeling that feature in Live was modeled after Logic's TouchTracks' as it is incredibly similar.)
They are only a few examples of a whole range of differences. If all the differences were itemized in the 'comparison chart' it would be about 3 pages long.
All I am saying is, don't take the comparison chart as the definitive list of differences.
yes, Express is a good basic tool and you can do a lot with it, with some imagination.
The SOS author's claim that:
you're paying less than a third of the price of Logic Pro and getting over 90 percent of the functionality."
is not true in totality.
It may be true to someone who has never dabbled in audio software before, because it takes literally years to become fully conversant with every function in Logic Pro, and no-one uses absolutely everything.
But for serious users, who have big demands, in my opinion, Express is less than 30% of Pro's functionality.

Airport Express - MacBook Pro connection dropping

Since I have purchased a MacBook Pro I have problems with the Airport Express connection. Before I had a PowerBook G4 and I did not experienced any problems at all. The connection or signal strength drops within a few seconds from 3 lines to 0 (based on the status bar radar). When I use the OSX application "Internet connection" I see a signal strength in between 0 (no connection) and 5 (bad connection).
I already installed AirPort Express Firmware Update 6.3 for Mac OS X, AirPort Extreme Update 2007-002 and AirPort Extreme Update 2007-003, but i did not make any difference. Also I have changed the channel after downloading the widget Macwireless to see any disturbance channels.

Transferring From Final Cut Express to Pro

Hey! I am looking to upgrade from Final Cut Express to Final Cut Pro. I have a present project in Express and plan to finish it shortly. However, can I take this file from Express and finish editing it in Final Cut Pro?

It has been reported that FCE projects will open in FCP. It does not work in the reverse direction, once the project is in FCP, FCE will not open it.

Upgrade from Final Cut Express to Pro 5.0

I think I made a stupid mistake. I purchased Final Cut Pro 5.0 upgrade thinking I could upgrade from Final Cut Express. But when I am asked to enter the previous versions serial number, it does not accept it. Is there any way to do this or am I going to have to buy the full version of Final Cut Pro?
Also, I have a G4 Powerbook with the following specs. Is it going to run the program if I do finally get it installed?

To upgrade from FCE you need the Final Cut Pro 5 Upgrade from Final Cut Express. I just upgraded FCE and that worked fine for me.

Need to configure - 2 Airport Expresses, Macbook Pro + iMac G4

Hi All. My problem is I can't get my G4 iMac to work with an Airport Express (connected to the ethernet port as the iMac doesn't have wireless.)
Below (A) is a configuration that works and (B) doesn't.
Configuration (A)
Airport Express 1(Main) (living room) - Connected to DSL modem + sterio
Airport Express 2 (bedroom) - Connected to USB printer
I can happily play music via airtunes and print wirelessly to the printer from my MacBook Pro.
Configuration (B)
Same as (A) but an iMac is connected to Airport Express 2 in the bedroom by Ethernet Cable.
The problem seems to be that the way Airport Express 2 is configured means the ethernet port isn't active. When I configure it to activate the port then I lose communication with it (from wireless Mac). The light goes from green to flashing amber. I can no longer see the printer from MacBook Pro.
So the question really is, in order to have Configuration (B) fully working, what setting do I need to set on both airport expresses?

WilH, Welcome to the discussion area!
The Ethernet port on the AirPort Express (AX) is ONLY active when the AX is using WDS to join a wireless network.
You will need to use the directions in KB 107454, AirPort Extreme and Express: Using WDS to create a network from multiple base stations to configure all of your AX. Configure AX1 as a "main base station". Configure AX2 and AX3 as remote base stations.

Logic express and pro 7 to logic studio 9 upgrade question

I have logic express 7, logic studio 7, and just upgraded to logicstudio 9, but my serial number is not recognized. All my copies should be registered with apple already, so how should i best remedy this?

I tried to follow your instructions but isn't working still. I think I did something wrong. Here is what I did:
1. Went to Midi Setup, double clicked on IAC driver and then checked the "device is online" box. It says its on Bus 1.
2a. In pro tools, went to peripherals, at the synchronization tab I left MTC reader port: ANY and put MTC Generator Port: IAC Driver, Bus 1
2b. Then went to the Machine Control tab, enabled MIDI Machine Control and set it to IAC Driver, Bus 1.
3a. In Logic Express I went to preferences>Midi>Sync and selected listen to MMC Input and took Midi Clock off. I see where it says MTC but there isn't a place to make it the slave.
I know I'm not doing this right because I hit play on Pro Tools and Logic Express just laughs at me
Can you help me through this. I'm a novice with Macs and Syncing.

Logic Express to Pro Tools for mixdown

Really sorry if this topic has been covered before, but all I can find on the various Logic boards I know of are ways of doing this in Logic Pro that aren't available in Express.
My band recorded an EP in Logic Express, which was great, but the engineer we'd like to use to mix it is Pro Tools-only. I know Pro Tools can load up AIF files, but the problem I have is that each track has different start and end points. If I gave him the individual tracks as is, we'd be spending all day synching them up.
I've thought of two ways I can prepare the files for him. Please let me know if they're ********.
1) Setting the fader at unity (0) and bouncing each track individually to a 24 bit WAV or AIF file while the rest are muted.
2) Manually cutting and pasting "fake" beginnings and endings of audio information to each track, then using the Glue tool to create a new, merged track. This way, I figure, each track should be in perfect synch with the rest.

bounce one by one to a folder (mute the other tracks) from the start to the finish, PCM 24 bit (44.1 if you going to make cd's), WAV, SDII or AIFF,
that way, all files start and finish in the same spot, Inside Protools you cut the silence parts and don't forget to place a dither plug-in in the master-fader.

Possible to upgrade Express to Pro? Help Needed!

I purchased Logic Express from the Apple Online Store recently, and I've learned after installing it that Pro is significantly better and that I would like that instead.
So, I need to know if its possible to buy an upgrade from Logic Express 8 to Logic Pro 8. If it isn't, I need information on how to return Logic Express 8 (I never received a receipt in my email, and I can't readily find the hard copy that came with the product).
Lastly, a friend told me that I need ProTools to recognize a driver (such as a digidesign). I've bought that software, but I was wondering if I should return that also, if Logic Pro 8 can do that by itself (doesn't it come with ProTools?).

My question which you were wondering about:
I have my Midi Keyboard connection to a DigiDesign 002 Rack, which is then connected via FireWire to my iMac. But on Logic, I just can't get the Digi002 to be recognized (it appears as an option under Preferences->Audio->Devices). On my previous computer which had Logic Pro 7 and an XS Key, I had the same setup and it worked fine. I heard that I need the software Protools to recognize my device (the Digi002) but I don't remember that being important when I had Logic Pro 7.
So, when I upgrade to Logic Pro 8, will I still need ProTools?

Differences between express and pro

What are some key differences between the Pro and Express versions? I understand that Pro included in the studio package and express is a stand alone product. Anything else?

Express is limited to DV, HDV and some AVCHD codecs.
Pro will handle just about any codec you throw at it and is scalable to hardware as well.
DVD SP, LT, Motion, ST, Cinema Tools are included in Pro. Color as well which is worth the whole package.
Only LT with Express I believe.

Dropped frames in Capture: Express vs Pro

Hi, I'd been using Express for a year and a half; last week I bought and installed Studio Pro2, partly because of the following experience which surprised both myself and my lab instructor.
I had a Standard Definition miniDV which resulted in many dropped frames while capturing at my house with Express on my iMac. Subsequently, I successfully captured the entire tape without any dropped frames on my university's computer which is a tower (G5? Intel?) running Pro (Pro6? Pro5? Pro4?). Out of curiousity, I tried capturing the same tape from the same camcorder using the same tower, except this time I did it with the tower's Express instead of the tower's Pro (yes, the tower has both applications installed). The problem of dropped frames returned, just as badly as they had been at my home. We are very surprised!
Is there a reason that Pro does a better job of interpretting potentially bad tape than Express does??? I would have assumed the Capture algorithms to be the same, but that no longer seems likely. Does Apple know that there is a difference between the two applications in the success of Capture? Should they be notified, or am I being naive to consider that they don't know the difference?

I just discovered my ''subscription'' response was off:-(( couldn't figure out why nobody's answered my last 2 posts:-)) I'm not rude enough to ignore people who help me, I'm just stupid!
It cost me; two months ago I purchased Studio2 as a direct result of my ''problems'' with FCE; tonight I read your post and realize the problem was actually 10.4.9 + 3.0.1. Needless to say, I'm now on 10.4.10. Lucky for me, I get Studio2 at academic prices, and I will actually benefit from DVD Pro as I now own an HD camera, and Compressor, but I still feel stooopid.
I have not been able to verify the school's versions of FCE and FCP (lab's closed in August), but it makes perfect sense that their FCE is 3.0.1, whereas their FCP was probably one of the earlier (non-offending) versions.

Installing Express after Pro

When installing Logic Express 8, I could see that this process caused most of my Logic Pro 8 library files to be overwritten. Everything seems to work in Pro, by I wonder if shorter samples, or any reduces materials, were installed. Does someone knows if these files are exactly the same in both versions, or shouold I reinstall my Logic Pro files?

I was wondering the same thing, as I've recently done this as well (bought LP after owning LE, that is). I was always wondering whether or not I needed it there, or even GB for that matter. I almost deleted LE/GB, until I realized that the programs themselves aren't taking up that much space. What takes up the most space are the sample libraries, apple loops (at least the non-midi ones), and perhaps some of the plugins. As far as I can tell, Logic Pro will install as a separate app, but it will share all of the file resources with LE and GB, and just add extra stuff on top (like the ES2, Scultpure, etc etc). I don't think you'd be saving all that much space getting rid of LE.
Besides, having LE around means that you don't ALWAYS need the xskey. Perfect for anyone running a laptop.

How can I Route audio signal from DIGI002 via SPDIF into Express or Pro

i have tried many things and cant seem to get it to work..

Logic Express VS Pro

What is the difference between Express & Pro?

Thnak you for $300 it might be worth it.. There are things in PTLE's plug in that I like. So I might do the final editing on PT. I have Audio Technica Condensor that needs Phantom.. I guess the PB's input does not give you that 48V. I still will end up using MBox for Phantom and it may defeat getting Logic and recording.
I am hearing that PT is really not good for Midi stuff. Can you tell me an example where Logic might be better for Midi editing.
I had experience where I had keyboard player record a piano track on MBox via Midi (M-Audio Uno) and she struggled with keeping in time due to latency. The notes didn't react immediatey. I took the track hone and it was lagging. I ended up quantasizing. When she heard that she said it lost all her feel. I was using Sample Tank's Piano Sample.
Will Logic be better in this case.?
