Express used as extender, can I run ethernet out?

I'm wanting to get a TV for my bedroom upstairs. I already have a new Airport Express up there working as a network extender. I was wondering if I can run an ethernet cable from the Express to the TV or Bluray player so I can watch Hulu, etc?

Bob,
I'd like to further clarify -or- ask a similar question...
You said that both ports on a 'new' Express will extend Ethernet. This must be when the Express is connected wirelessly, right?  (Otherwise the WAN port would have a cable in it already)
What about a hard-wired setup?...
I am planning to extend my Extreme's wi-fi, by Ethernet cable, to a new Express in the basement.  (FaceTime with grandparents drops out in the kids playroom down there). This should be dead easy, your posted method seems to be very popular.  However, I only have a single cat6 running to the basement, currently into an appleTV3.  I will have to unplug the aTV, and plug that cable into the Express's WAN port, to make this happen.
I would rather not connect the aTV thru wi-fi.  I am expecting that I will be able to patch the aTV into the Express's remaining LAN <-> port and the aTV will continue to work, as if nothing has changed...except for good wi-fi now in the basement.  Essentially, cable-wise, the Express will act as a single port switch.  (Extreme will DHCP the Express; and will also DHCP the Express's <-> port)
Otherwise, I will have to use a 4port switch...first... and then connect both Express and aTV into that. <yuk>
(I just feel that connecting backbone network components directly to the Extreme is better than having a switch in the way)
Bob, can you confirm that the Express will 'pass-thru' any Ethernet cable connection? (IP addressing isn't really a biggie, whoever does it, I can bundle a fixed range if need be)
Thanks for your guidance,
Eric

  • Airport Express - using range extender and Ethernet at the same time?

So, I am thinking of buying an Airport Express. I am would be using it to extend the range (wirelessly) of my current Wi-Fi and also use the Ethernet ports on the back to connect my DVD player (so I can use the Internet-enabled apps on it). My question is whether the Airport Express can extend the range of my Wi-Fi as well as provide an internet connection to my DVD player simultaesnously.
My current setup in my house is:
    - A wireless modem from my ISP (www.telenet.be)
    - A Cisco range extender - however, this one often drops the connection so the Airport Express would be a replacement for this.
The current Cisco range extender is plugged in near my TV and it picks up the wireless connection from my ISP modem and extends it as well as being connected to the DVD player. However, I am tired of losing the connection so I thinking of buying an Airport Express.
I have no other Apple network devices (Airport Extreme, Airport Time Capsule, etc.)
    Can you help me out?

No, Apple products will only wirelessly extend the signal from other Apple products.
Another way of saying the same thing is that you must have two Apple AirPort routers if you want to extend the signal wirelessly.

  • Airport express used to extend Wi-Fi doesn't improve reception

My iPad, iPhone, and MacBook air typically only show one bar of Wi-Fi reception on the 2nd floor of our home and have problems staying connected to the home network. I added an Airport express to the 2nd floor and configured it successfully to join and extend (wirelessly) the existing Wi-Fi network (Linksys ES3400). The problem is that all of these devices still only show one bar of Wi-Fi reception on the 2nd floor of our home, even when they are right next to the AirPort Express. What am I missing?

How did you accomplish this? Normally, you cannot extend the network of a non-Apple router. Read the following from Bob Timmons:
The AEX will indeed function to extend the network if it connects using Ethernet in Bridge Mode and it is configured to create a wireless network using the same wireless network name and password as the LinkSys router network.
But, you really don't need to be concerned with the "jargon" here, since any of the AirPort Utility 6.x versions will literally take care of the setup automatically.
All that you need to do is enter the name of the network, assign a device name for the AirPort and password, and click Next.

  • Airport Express used to extend wireless network from Linksys?

I've been asked if I can straighten out a wireless mess at a local church. They have a wireless network in their office (a seperate small building) using a linksys transmitter.
The church (a seperate building 50 yards away is where they want to extend the network to.
Currently, I can read the network there on whqat they have now but something is misconfigured and the manufacturer is being of little assistance.
Has anyone used an Apple Airport Express to extend a 3rd party wireless router? Ive decided it may just be worth the cost to dump the relay they have and simply buy an airport express.
    Suggestions?

The Linksys WRT54G and WRT54GS (not latest versions v5) are the only 2 known Linksys routers compatible with Apple's WDS.
So if you are using one of those routers you should be able to do it.
If you are using a different router it probably will not work.

  • Airport Express wil not extend wireless network via ethernet

I need maximum bandwidth in a area with poor signal. No matter what I do, the AE will not extend my APEBS dual band via ethernet. It will alway connect wirlessly giving me half the speed. I have 1 main network to extend. I have tried to extend the 5 GHz wide channel as a seperate network but this wont work either.(but thats what I want really. Please help. I have been at this a couple days already and I need to figure it out before my return policy wears out. Thanks!

If you are connecting the Airport Express to your AirPort Extreme via ethernet, the AirPort Express should be configured as follows:
Open AirPort Utility, click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab just below the row of icons
Wireless Mode should be set to "Create a Wireless Network"
Wireless Network Name would be the exact name of the main network that the Extreme is creating, same security, password.
Radio Mode must be set the same as the main network on the Extreme
Channel should be set to be least 6 channels apart from the channel that the main network is using on the Extreme.
Click the Internet icon above and look for Connection Sharing at the bottom of the page. This should be set to "Off (Bridge Mode)".
    Update to save settings.

    ok, this's not a bug.
I'm install eioffice(Yongzhong office, a chinese office software) and test it, and i have to set AWT_TOOLKIT=MToolkit (Running eio with compiz).
    That's the problem.
    unset AWT_TOOLKIT

  • Changing the radio channel on Airport Express used to extend an Airport network?

    Hi,
I'm using a Time Capsule as my primary wifi base station and an Airport Express to extend the network. The two devices are connected by WiFi.
My problem is that the 5GHz network of the Airport Express is using channel 100 and the reception just 5 meters away from it is everythign but great. According to Apple WiFI diagnostics I should use on of the low intensity channel like e.g. 36, 40.
My problem is that I dont know how to change the channel. Using Aiport Utilities there is no option to select the radio channe in the options for the wireless network. Is this not possible at all?
Thanks a lot for your help!

    What model is the TC?
If you are extending the TC by wireless then the channel must be set on the TC not the Express.
Go to the wireless tab of the airport utility and select wireless options. Channels are there.
But if you have the new AC model the channel will not change for 5ghz.. you will not be able to adjust it even if you change the numbers..
You really should use 2.4ghz for areas where signal is bad.. it is still much better than 5ghz.

  • Airport Express 802.11g ethernet out

I'm getting the new Samsung 2550 bluray dvd player. If I connect it to an ethernet connection it will stream Netflix movies and Pandora radio thru my home theater. Can I get ethernet out of my Airport Express 802.11g that is streaming AirTunes music to my home theater and into the Samsung? The Samsung isn't wireless. If not, does the APE 802.11n support ethernet out?
    Thanks

Thanks for the correction. I have an Airport Extreme 802.11g connected to a dsl modem. It is broadcasting to an Airport Express 802.11g at the living room home theater (AirTunes) and also to another Airport Express 802.11g in my son's room for the PS3 connection. Everything works great now. The <...> ethernet jack on the living room express is empty but I thought it was only for connecting to the dsl modem. It can be configured to provide ethernet out without screwing up my home network?

  • Can i run windows on my mac book?

I am trying to avoid having to buy a new computer.  i need to acess my works server and they run windows.  i need access to microsoft outlook, xcel, and accubid. anyone have any advice?

VirtualBox is just one solution, in the "virtualization" category. With virtualization, you continue to run OS X and its programs, and Windows runs like another application as a "virtualized" PC. This is nice because you can use Windows and Mac programs at the same time. Ars Technica just did a review of Parallels and Fusion, two other non-free applications you can use other than VirtualBox which people use for more serious work. You should read that review because it will give you good background on how people run Windows on Macs under virtualization. I use VirtualBox and Parallels, on different Macs.
The other way to run Windows is to create a separate partition on your disk, load Windows on it, and reboot the entire Mac into Windows. Apple allows this through Boot Camp software. This basically turns the entire computer into a Windows PC, which is best for compatibility, performance, and resource use, but you can't run Mac programs while you're using Windows in Boot Camp.

  • Can I use Airport Express to extend signal from my Airport Extreme and then run Ethernet from Express to my TV which requires ethernet to access internet?

As stated in title. I want to access Netflix but my TV requires ethernet connection. I would like to use Express to repeat Exreme sigal and then to TV via Ethernet. I only have one access point in house for cable modem so I'm using Extreme to broadcast though house. Will need to be able to input network key for Extreme secure network. Thank you.
    Mike

Are both your AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express 802.11"n" devices?
If yes, you can configure the Express to "extend a wireless network" and it will  provide more wireless coverage and the Etherent port will be enabled so that you can connect an Ethernet device.
This assumes that the Express is located where it can receive a strong signal from the AirPort Extreme.

  • Can I add a second Airport Express using an Ethernet cable to extend my network if the first AX is wirelessly connected to an Xtreme?

Hi, I run a small motel and I am trying to extend the wireless network from the office to the rooms in the next building.
I have an AirPort Xtreme connected to my router with an ethernet cable and it works fine.  I have then connected an AirPort Express to this in the next bulding wirelessly (as i cant run an ethernet cable outside) which extends the network over all but the last 2 rooms in the next building.  There are bick walls so it sruggles over the distance.  I realise I cant connect another airport express wirelessly to extend the network further but can I connect another Airport Express using and ethernet cable to the exisiting Aiport Express to extend the network that extra distance?

You can do this, but as you might imagine, that is going to place even more of a load on the weakest link....the wireless "hop"......between your AirPort Extreme and the current AirPort Express.
So, things will slow down even more. Whether or not that will be acceptable to your guests is open to question. Light browsing and email should be OK. Someone trying to download a large file is going to be waiting longer than they might consider normal.
Things like this, you simply cannot predict in advance. Might be a good idea to understand the store's return policy if the new Express puts more of load on the network than is expected.

  • Can you use a Airport Express N to extend a network with a Comcast Modem/router to get ethernet to a stereo receiver?

Trying to hook up a friends receiver using a AE to get it ethernet. I know how to do it with an Airport Extreme (my own system) but can I do it with his hardware?

You cannot use an extreme to a brand other than Apple for wireless bridge.
You can use an Express. You need to join a wireless network which is a rather tricky setup.

Or look at a post by Bob TImmons on how to set up express in bridge.

  • Can my Airport Express be used to extend the signal for an iPad2

I am using a Linksys wired router as the beginning of my home network. There is an ethernet cable running from it through a wall to the Xbox 360 and an Airport Express serving as the base for the wireless network. I have an iBook on the other side of the wall and about 10 feet and an iMac about 20 feet with one wall in between. These two have some fluctuation in their signal but only between 4 bars and 3. I just got an iPad 2 and it is causing me grief because it struggles to maintain a connection just another 10 feet from the iBook. If I put it next to the iMac when it has full 4 bars the iPad gets maybe 2. The iPad has full bars if next to the router. That kind of defeats the purpose of buying an iPad. So, my question is how to rearrange the network so the iPad is happy in the living room where I mostly use it. I had considered moving the iMac and using it as a base station to free the Airport Express for other duty but where I want to move it is further away from the living room. Right now the Airport is wired to the router. Is this necessary for it to be a part of the network? I know I can use it to get music from iTunes to speakers but would that placement also work as a wireless extender? Would just buying another router for the Xbox location and putting the Airport there also be a better solution?

ladybastet, let's clean up some terminology. You should designate only one router for your network. At present that is the Linksys. Your wireless access point is the Express, and it gets its network connection from the Linksys. Is that correct?
If I put it next to the iMac when it has full 4 bars the iPad gets maybe 2. The iPad has full bars if next to the router.
Now that you know your Linksys is the router, is the above correct? Unless the Linksys is also a wireless access point, the iPad's proximity to it will not matter. Only its proximity to the device creating the wireless network is a factor. In your case, I believe that is the Express.
There is an ethernet cable running from it through a wall to the Xbox 360 and an Airport Express serving as the base for the wireless network.
I'm not sure I understand. Is one Ethernet cable going to two places? What is it connected to, precisely?
Right now the Airport is wired to the router. Is this necessary for it to be a part of the network?
In the case of a wired router, yes.
I'm wondering if you have things configured properly, particularly if you have configured the iMac to share its network connection over AirPort. I'm even wondering if your iPad has unintentionally joined a neighbor's wireless network.
I had considered moving the iMac and using it as a base station to free the Airport Express for other duty but where I want to move it is further away from the living room.
Using the iMac to share a wired Ethernet connection to create its own wireless network is certainly possible, but it is less than ideal. For one, the iMac would have to be powered on all the time.
You do not need or want another router.
It is impossible for me to be certain of your network environment (meaning, the size and configuration of your home, the proximity of competing wireless networks, the number of network devices, and the potential for interference) but you might be better off replacing the wired Linksys router with an AirPort Extreme. That would give you the ability to create a "roaming network" or to use your Express to extend the Extreme's wireless network. I think this would be the easiest solution, but given the uncertainly of your description this expense may not be necessary.
Much of my confusion stems from your original question: "Can my Airport Express be used to extend the signal for an iPad2" - the quick answer is yes, but a prerequisite question is, "what signal?" The only "signal" I can determine that may be relevant is the one created by the Express. Once we have the terminology fixed, perhaps we can fix what's wrong with your network.

  • Is there a way to turn the wireless capabilities off on an AirPort Express?  I have an AirPort Extreme as my main router and use the express to just extend it. I only really want to you use the express for hard ethernet connections

Is there a way to turn the wireless capabilities off on an AirPort Express?  I have an AirPort Extreme as my main router and use the express to just extend it. I only really want to you use the express for hard ethernet connections. For whatever reason when I have my express extend my wifi at home the download speed from just the express is absolutely terrible, drops to about 1.5 mb compared to when it's on the extremes part of the network the speed goes up to 50-75mb. These terrible download speed really only affects the iPhones as my MacBook Pro usually gets the good speed no matter where it is. I don't believe there is anything wrong with my phone because if I am in the part of the house that uses just the extreme the download speeds on the iphone goes up to 50-75mb. As a note I have an AirPort Extreme on the top floor of my house (second floor) that's where my modem is located. On the first floor that's where one airport express is located. I also have another airport express in the basement that is accessed by my landlord. Any thoughts on how to fix this would be helpful.

Is there a way to turn the wireless capabilities off on an AirPort Express?  I have an AirPort Extreme as my main router and use the express to just extend it. I only really want to you use the express for hard ethernet connections.
It appears that your networking goals with the AirPort Express is to use it as a wireless Ethernet bridge instead of using it to extend the wireless range of your AirPort Extreme. The latter requires that the Express Wi-Fi radios be enabled.
If you intended to use the Express as a wireless bridge, you just need to reconfigure it to "Join a wireless" network instead of "Extend a wireless network."
For whatever reason when I have my express extend my wifi at home the download speed from just the express is absolutely terrible, drops to about 1.5 mb compared to when it's on the extremes part of the network the speed goes up to 50-75mb.
In an extended network, the placement of the extending base station is critical as it can only extend the wireless network at the bandwidth at which it receives it.
Please check out the following AirPort User Tip for details on optimal base station placement.
