Express with no DSL router.

My sons university accomodation broadband will only allow one MAC address to work with his service, he can and has paid to upgrade to a maximum of 5. He has tried using his macbook as a WiFi base station but the provider doesn't allow other devices to allocate IP addresses. We have a spare express he might be able to use if it is able to do what he wants, but for one reason or another we need to know if it will work first rather than trying it.
My thought here is that the ethernet port would be used for the connection with his single ethernet outlet in his room and am not sure whether he would be able to use his AirPort utility wirelessly to configure the express in bridging mode as he seems to need to.
Any ideas guys.

Happy to help.
Unless the school requires that a specific IP address be used to connect to the school network, you should be able to setup the Express at home and test it out for proper operation. Then all that will be needed is to plug into the school network.
Connect the Express to one of the LAN ports on a router and open AirPort Utility to follow the guided setup to "create a wireless network". AirPort Utility will likely automatically choose the Bridge Mode option for you, but in case it does not, select that option when the choice appears. This will allow the school's router to properly identify the devices that will be used on the network.

  • Using airport express with a 2wire router

I just got Bellsouth DSL with a 2wire dsl modem that is also a wireless router.
It works fine, but I still want to use my airport express to listen to music.
I can't figure out how to do so, though I have tried various configurations
with the airport setup utility. Anyone have any ideas? How can I use
    express with another wireless router?

Let's double-check your AirPort Express Base Station's (AX) settings ...
Perform a "factory default" reset of the AX
    o (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108044)
Either connect to the AX's wireless network or connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then using the AirPort Utility in "Manual Setup" mode, make the following changes:
    AirPort > Base Station
o Base Station Name: <rename or leave default>
    o Base Station Password: <enter desired password>
    o Verify Password: <re-enter desired password>
o Remember this password in my keychain: (optional)
    o Set time automatically: (unchecked)
    AirPort > Wireless
o Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
    o Network Name: <existing 2wire's wireless network>
o Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
o Wireless Password: <enter the existing wireless network password>
o Verify Password: <re-enter the existing wireless network password>
    Music
    o Enable AirTunes (checked)
o iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
    o iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
    o Verify Password: (optional)
o Click Update to write the new settings to the AX
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
o Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

  • Issue with 2wire dsl router when connecting power pc g4 via ethernet

Issue with 2wire dsl router when connecting power pc g4 via ethernet. The 2wire will keep resetting. When I connect my macbook pro via ethernet to the 2wire all is ok, but as soon as i connect the power pc. . . .reset. I have emailed 2wire support. They recommended using a different patch cable. Tried that.. .. anyone else having this issue???? Any help would be appreciated. . .

Search the discussions for issues with 2wire dsl routers. This has come up before in a discussion I've been involved with, but probably not to do with the MDD. I do remember it being a design issue with the router, something that was done to it before dispatch.
Let us know if you can't find it and we'll have a look.
If you afford it, bin the 2wire and go buy something decent like a Netgear.

  • Airport Express with D-Link router?

I bought an Airport Express with the specific purpose of connecting an old 1999 iMac to the internet (D-Link wireless router) via the ethernet port. I also thought I could use it to connect other ethernet devices such as my HD-DVD player.
I tried to configure the Express with my PowerBook to discover later in the instructions that the ethernet port is disabled when configuring the unit as wireless bridge/client. It sounds odd, becuase I can't understand the use of it, then. The range extender configuration which enables ethernet, apparently only works with an Airport base station. I admit I'm not very networking-savvy. Did I do something wrong? Am I understanding the instructions correctly?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately, most non-AirPort routers are not compatible with Apple's implementation of Wireless Distribution System (WDS)...so it very unlikely that your D-Link router can be extended wirelessly with the AirPort Express Base Station (AX).
The few that are known to work are:
o another Airport Express Base Station
o 802.11g Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS)
o 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn)
    o Linksys WRT54G or WRT54GS (not v5)
    o Belkin F5D7230-4 and F5D7231
    o BT Voyager 2091
    o Netgear WGR614 v6
    o Buffalo WGR-G54

  • Help set up AirPort with TTNET DSL router in Turkey

New AirPort TIme Capsule cannot connect to Internet via TTNET DSL router.  I am currently in Turkey.  My previous set up was Lincsys WiFi Router connected directly into the same TTNET DSL router (which was provided by ISP) and worked fine.
With the AirPort Time Capsule set as Router - Off (Bridge Mode).  It does not allow for Double NAT :  "This AirPort base station has a private IP address on its Ethernet WAN port.  It is connected to a devis or network that is using NAT to provide private IP.  Change your AirPort to bridge mode".
Everything worked fine for a few days, but now not unable to connect to the internet.
I do not have any info from ISP.  Nothing that I can find.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try simply rebooting the TC.. every now and then they do have tendency to just drop out.
Otherwise give us some more info.
What make and model is the DSL router??
Does your ISP use pppoe authentication? If so it may be possible to bridge it and use the TC as main router.

  • How to setup TIme capsule with a DSL router step by step?

    Hi All,
Does anyone know how to conncet Time Capsule set by step through a DSL router?
I already have a DSL router, but want to connect my time capsule to that router.
Do i connect it through ethernet?, and is it possible to have my time capsule as a different router at home with a different password than the DSL router?, if so how is that possible?, is going to have the same download/upload speed as the DSL router?
    Please help, thanks

    You simply bridge the TC.
Plug it by ethernet into the adsl modem router and it will work fine.
nd is it possible to have my time capsule as a different router at home with a different password than the DSL router?,
No, the TC will cause trouble if you set it up as a router.. it has to be bridged. You only have a single adsl connection but there are some ISP that allow a secondary pppoe login and some modems that allow it. It is pretty difficult setup. Ask your ISP as there is often a charge that is very high for the second connection. It will still share the same link so there is no improvement in speed, merely two different authentications sharing the same line. The TC can do pppoe client but has nothing very fancy about it.

  • Time Machine, Airport Express n and DSL router combo setup

I'm having difficulty with this setup. I have a dsl modem/router combo that I got from my isp. What I would like to do is use the time machine in conjunction with the express to broaden the wireless signal in my house.
So the dsl line runs into the modem router. The modem/router is running dhcp and is connected to the time machine via an ethernet port to the time machine's wan port. I would like the time machine to serve the wireless for the house in conjunction with the express.
I setup the time machine via the setup assistant and it appears to work ok. How do I configure the express so that it is extending the range of the time capsule wirelessly?
    thanks

    remraf12, welcome to the discussions!
When you mention that you setup Time Machine to create a wireless network, I assume that you meant to say that you have a Time Capsule. Is that correct?
If so, open Airport Utility and click on Manual Setup
Select the Wireless Tab just below the row of icons at the top of pane to select the Wireless settings page.
Make sure that there is a check mark next to "Allow this network to be extended" and click Update to save your changes.
I also assume that you have a newer AirPort Express that is capable of "n" speeds.
You would also use AirPort Utility to setup the Express to "Extend a wireless network" in the Wireless Mode setting. The Express should find your wireless network and ask you for the password so that it can extend the wireless network created by the Time Capsule.

  • Airport express with wireless NetGear router

    Hello everyone...
I received an Airport Express for Christmas. I was immediately able to set up a wireless network at the home I was visiting by plugging in the ethernet cable and a few simple set up steps. After bringing it home, I was able to set it up with the stereo in my bedroom to run iTunes throughout my apartment.
The problem is that I can't get the Airport Express to work through the wireless network already set up in my apartment. If I do the iTunes thing, I can't connect to the internet while it's playing--so it seems to be creating its own network but not connecting with the current wireless internet available in the room.
I did the full reset (unplugged the airport, pushed and held the reset button while plugging it back in until it flashed green three times). From reading other posts I understand that I do have a wireless router capable of handling the WDS (WGR614 v6) but for some reason I am unable to set it up!
Someone please help so i can stream iTunes and surf the net at the same time!

thanks for the link, however my router does not show up in the airport utility. I am not using an airport base station, I am using a Netgear as stated in the original question.
+> 1. Click the AirPort status menu in the menu bar and choose the wireless network created by the base station you want to set up as the main base station.+
This I was able to do, obviously...
+>Open AirPort Utility. Select the main base station...+
There are no stations listed and I have tried clicking "other" and entering the IP address I believe my router is using, but to no avail.

  • Airport express with old Netgear router together?

I just bought an Airport express because my older Netgear router may be causing issues with streaming movies on my Apple TV.  (For some reason the movies cut off).  Would it be better to throw out the old router and start anew with the Airport Express or use them both in conjunction?

If there is actually something amiss with your current Netgear router, then replacing it with the AirPort Express or any other wireless router would be in order. Otherwise, you would have to decide what you actual networking requirements are that you believe the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) would fulfill that the Netgear is not doing for you.
The Apple TV, especially the latest version, can work completely without the AirPort Express, and actually duplicates its AirPort Speaker feature.

  • Using airport express with 3com modem/router

    Hi all,
    I have a 3COM modem/wifi router with serial code 3CRWE754G72-A.
I recently purchased a MacBook Pro and to my dismay the wifi does not work with my Router (I have all latest updates etc.). I have no idea why, but apple support say its cos my router is crap and they dont support 3rd party routers (they checked my MBP and found nothing wrong with it apparently, connects to apple base stations no probs)... there are loads of threads on this topic of incompatible wifi routers with the MBP in the MBP discussion area so I wont go into details on that.
My question is: is there any way the airport express could be of use? From what I understand usually you can use it to extend your wireless network by adding it as a client to the existing network. However I am suspicious if it will pickup on my 3com wireless network... my MBP doesnt so I wouldnt be surprised if this didnt either!! Is it somehow possible to disable the wifi on my 3com router and connect it directly via ethernet to an airport express, and use the airport express solely for createing the wifi network?
    Any other suggestions welcome!

My question is: is there any way the airport express could be of use?
The only thing the AirPort Express (AX) could possibly do is join the wireless network created by that router as a client. This would only give you the ability to use the AX's USB printer port and AX's audio output. This would NOT give you the ability to use the AX's Ethernet port.
If your MacBook Pro can't join the wireless network provided by that device, the AX probably can't either.
The AX can not be used to extend the network provided by that device nor can the AX's Ethernet port be enabled to allow you to connect your MacBook Pro. Both of these require compatibility with Apple's WDS which that device does not have.

  • Airport Express with a Belkin router?

I've got an Airport Express b/g that I would like to set up to extend the range of my existing network and to use with Airtunes to play music from my computers through my main stereo.  My network is currently using a Belkin router from my Comcast modem.  Will the Express play nicely with the Belkin?  The Express documentation only refers to Airport Extreme routers.
    Thanks for any help

Unfortunately, most non-AirPort routers are not compatible with Apple's implementation of Wireless Distribution System (WDS)...so it very unlikely that your Belkin router can be extended wirelessly with the AirPort Express Base Station (AX).

  • Configure RVS4000 Behind 2700-Gateway Qwest DSL Router VPN

I have my QWEST DSL Router 2700-Gateway using a static public IP address
This is setup to be the DHCP and assigned 192.168.0.2-50
I need some help how to connect my RVS4000 and utilize VPN so I can connect to my work network from home. The 2700-Gateway has some features like Transparent Bridging, etc, but not sure how to me this work. Can anyone point me to article even if it's configuring with another DSL Router.
Here is how I tried with my medium knowledge of networking...
I have configured the RVS4000 as:
    LAN Static IP
    192.168.0.115
    Configured as DHCP Relay
the 2700-Gateway router saw the device so:
Configured firewall on 2700-Gateway for PORT FORWARDING:
TCP port 1723 for PPTP tunnel maintenance traffic
UDP port 47 Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE)
UDP port 500 for Internet Key Exchange (IKE) traffic
UDP port 1701 for L2TP traffic
    --> 192.168.0.115
    This did not work.

    gv,
Thanks for your help. I discovered the EasyVPN works quite differently then I expected a IPSec to work. Thanks for the suggestions. I documented my finding and procedure below.
The answer was to use the transparent bridging setting on my DSL modem model 2Wire GATEWAYHG-2700 and and turn off Search PCV,  then setup the PPPoE on the RVS4000 VPN router to accept and authenticate my public IP address.
Once I had the modem and router configured, I then had my RVS4000 VPN router ready to test VPN client. The documentation is vague. But after doing some research on here and having some difficulty:
    My Finding:
I already had latest Firmware 1.109 from purchase
On the client, I discovered from reading that the EasyVPN uses 443. Well I have this forwarding to a exchange server to utilize RPC/HTTPS with outlook. This turns out that it was fixed with the lastest firmware
The new firmware allows this, as they fixed the vpn listening port override to port 60443..
I port forwarded this to my router gateway 192.168.1.1
In order to use this port, you must have the lastest client from the downloads at RVS4000 version. 1.10 which adds a drop box Auto/443/60433. I found auto and 60443 to work with my configuration.
This configuration let me connect successfully.
If you read the readme that's included with the EasyVPN client download, you have to export the client cert under VPN, and copy the file *.pem to the root folder of the vpn client.exe stated in readme to get rid of the security popup. This worked for me.
So everything seems to be connecting.. But know get "The remote gateway is not responding" popup.  I tried the suggested MTU setting with no luck.
After establishing a network share under map drive, this seems to have stop responding as well once this popup occurs.
Things like this should just not be so hard..
So I found this post in regards to my problem and hoping to here if anyone else has found a solution or work around here. Good night, some things are just not worth staying up late for,

  • I have changed my DSL router and my Airport express device doesn' work anymore

Hello, After I changed my DSL router (from my internet provider, it's a netgear), my Airport Express doesn't work anymore. It shows a yellow light.
I have tried to unplug several times with no success. The Airport utility on my Mac (running MacOS 10.6.8) doesn't discover it.
    Any idea?

Unplug the AirPort Express from power
    Wait a minute
Hold in the reset button on the Express and keep holding it in for an additional 7-8 seconds while you simultaneously plug the Express back in to power
Release the reset button after the hold period and allow 40-45 seconds for the Express to restart and come back up to a slow blinking amber light.
Now the Express is back to factory settings
Look for a wireless network with a name like Apple Network xxxxxxx. You have to log on to that network first....no password is required.....then open AirPort Utility

  • Desktop PC with Airport Express connected to another router

Hi, I'm new to the wireless world. I have an exsisting wired network with wired connections. The router is a Belkin which also does wireless. I have another desktop computer which I cannot get wires run to so easily. My idea is to use my Airport express's ethernet port for this desktop and wirelessly connect the Airport express to the main router for internet services. Is this possible?
    Thanks
    Steve

Configure the Express as a bridge: join the wireless network, and set "connection sharing" to "off (bridge mode)". Under the Wireless tab, see if there's a box labeled "allow Ethernet clients".
If there is, check the box.
The "n" model Expresses that are capable of this were first sold in March, 2008. Earlier "b/g" only ones may be capable of this too; I just never had one so that's the reason for the qualifier.
