Express34 eSata card causing lockups

I have a 2.53 MBP and an eSata express34 card that when I insert the card it will sometimes cause the system to lockup as in the message comes up on the screen telling to restart the computer. Is there a known problem with Express34 cards?

  • ESATA card w/ drive connected causes Windows 7 bootup to hang

I installed the NewerTech MAXPower eSATA 6G PCIe 2.0 card in slot 2 (PCI Express 2.0) of my Mac Pro (January 2008). My Mac Pro is configured with Mac OS X 10.6.x. It also has 64-bit Windows 7 installed via Boot Camp.
The NewerTech eSATA card works fine with Mac OS X. However, if an external drive connected to the eSATA card is powered ON at the time I natively boot-up to Windows 7, booting up hangs with the following message:
    Marvell 88SE91xx Adapter - BIOS Version 1.0.0.1003.
    Initializing...
If the external drive is OFF at the time I boot-up Windows 7, boot-up doesn't hang. I get the following message during bootup:
    Disk Information:
    No hard disk detected!
Then, my Mac Pro continues to boot up into Windows 7; it does not hang. However, I can't use the drive. If I turn on the drive (a LaCie D2 Quadra 1 TB hard drive) after logging into Windows 7, it is not detected by Windows 7. This is different behavior than with Mac OS X. If my LaCie drive was off when I boot-up into Mac OS X, and I turn on the LaCie drive after logging into Mac OS X, the drive is detected properly and shows up in Finder. I also have the OWC Mercury Extreme Pro Qx2. If I turn it OFF prior to booting into Windows 7 (to prevent a hang), and then turn it back ON after booting into Windows 7, then Windows 7 recognizes the Qx2.
So, does anyone have any suggestions on how to bootup Windows 7 natively while an external drive is connected? I reported the problem to OWC and they said that their "engineers are working on it", but it's been weeks, and it seems nothing is being done. BTW, I only tried slot 2 on my Mac. Wonder if it will help to try another slot.
    Thanks.

I haven't had any problems using the card other than Windows 7 bootup hanging if an external drive is connected to the card. Do you think it's a good chance that it's an issue with the external drive having the USB/eSATA/firewire interfaces, and not the card itself? Unfortunately, all my external drives (all of which hang during Windows 7 bootup via bootcamp) have the USB/eSATA/firewire interfaces.
I did some write tesing (large video files) using the OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro Qx2 (4 drives in a RAID 5 config), which has a USB/eSATA/firewire interface. Using the eSATA interface, I was getting 202 MB/sec. Using Firewire 800, I was getting 65 MB/sec. So the eSATA was 202/65 = 3.1 times faster than Firewire 800. So, eSATA is certainly desirable to use. Not sure how much better I'd get with an enclosure that has only eSATA, and whether or not I'd get rid of the Windows 7 "hanging during bootup" bug.... Not an easy test to do given how much these external enclosures cost.
If anyone has any suggestions on alternate eSATA cards that work with Mac OS X SL, Windows 7 (natively via boot camp and via Parallels), let me know. Driverless would be great. I've done a lot of searching around for an ideal eSATA card, but seems that each one has different pros/cons.
    thanks.

  • Can two PCI-e eSATA cards work at the same time?

    Hello,
I've been using a cheap, 2 ports sil3132 eSATA card for the past 8 months or so. I just bought a second one as I needed more ports, but the two cards are not working well together.
    First: is there a solution?
Second: would an eSATA from another maker work better?
    Thanks

Maybe they share the same driver and chipset and cause an issue?
I have 2 port Sonnet Tempo E2P and E4P but they are different chipset and drivers.

Yes you can. FirmTek 4-port is excellent and Newertech has SATA III 2-port (and no driver needed).

  • Can I add a PCI Express eSATA card to my G5

    Hi All,
Not clear if this will work...I have a late 2005 model Power Mac G5. I'd like to add this eSATA PCI Express card: http://www.worldofcables.com/store/viewItem.asp?idproduct=9232

    Greetings Everyone,
I am a long time Mac User but I must confess I am not really a "power user" I use my mac to edit my gigs and thats about it. I have acquired a 6TB G-Raid External SATA drive with tons of footage and I need to be able to interface my G5 PPC to it. I need to add a ESATA card to my rig so I can get to that footage. Please, Please, Please help! If anyone can suggest a card that will work I would be so very happy! I would be happier still if it was affordable!

  • Will multiple Lan cards cause problems using rmi?

Will multiple Lan cards cause problems using rmi? If a host has two or more network cards (only one of which is Internet-enabled), how does RMI know which IP address to use? There seems to be a problem when such a client registers with an RMI service, and has a client-side callback method invoked by the server.

You can tell RMI the address you want by defining java.rmi.server.hostname at the JVM which exports the remote object.

  • "mountain lion" esata card drives won't mount

Just installed mountain lion on my brand new (2x2.66 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon) MacPro tower with an Apple store bought eSata card.
Yesteray everythign fine under regular Lion.
Today, with Mountain Lion, my drives on the eSata card will not mount.
If I connect the drive sthrough firewire they do mount (phew!)
But I need them to operate under eSata for speed and because I have a lot of external drives.
It only appears to be a Mountain Lion issue.
    Anyone else report problems?

Hmmm..there were never any drivers for my card. In fact I don't even know what my card is..because it just came from Apple.
    Okay..I found drivers..

  • ESata Card is Force Shutting Down My Computer!

I have a 4 port eSata Card, plugged into one of my PCI slots. I recently had to reformat my computer and now have 10.5.7. Whenever I plug in my 5 HD enclosure (NORCO), it will work for a little bit then the gray screen of death will come up saying I have to restart my computer by holding the power button.
I contacted the company that makes the eSata card (EZQuest) but they had no solution other than to replace the driver. I have tried everything and am now out of options. Any suggestions? Is it my card or computer?

    Hi,
If it is this card it is a SiI-3124 based controller.
    http://www.ezq.com/product/productspec.php?id=23
It is not unusual to find that this type of card will not work on the Macintosh if the BASE BIOS is not installed. The other possible problem is if conflicting drivers have been installed on the boot disk.
What I would do is install a fresh copy of Mac OS X on a spare empty hard disk and then install the SiI3124 32-bit universal Mac OS X 10.4.9, 10.4.10, & 10.5.1 BASE Driver v2.0.3 found here.
    http://www.siliconimage.com/support/searchresults.aspx?pid=27&cat=3
If it works you will know the original boot drive has a driver conflict. If this fails to work then you either have a defective card or the BASE BIOS may not be installed on the controller.
    Have fun!

  • Using an external HD with an eSATA card

I have a music library on an external HD connected to an eSATA card that I access many hours a day. I notice the difference in responsiveness when compared to the same drive connected with FIrewire 800. But it is idle many hours a day. And I notice that using eSATA the drive never spins down the way it does using Firewire.
Am I shortening the life of the drive by leaving it on and spinning all day every day and shut down at night? I don't think the computer goes to sleep naturally when it is connected and spinning. Without it the computer sleeps normally in non use.
If it's not costing too much in energy or wear I will enjoy the advantage of eSATA. But if there is gain by being frugal connecting it with Firewire I may like to do that.
Any thoughts please? I don't know if all drives spin constantly with eSATA. Is it universal or does it depend on the card design? Does an internal 2nd HD spin down when not in use? Does the main HD?

    Hi,
It is not unusual for hard disks connected via eSATA NOT to spin down when inactive. However, the Mac Pro should still support sleep mode. You may want to verify the energy settings in System Preferences. I would also use the sleep menu under the Apple to verify the Mac Pro will sleep and wake from sleep with the SATA controller card installed.
I dismount and turn off my external eSATA hard disks when they are not needed. The latest Silicon Image driver allows the eSATA HD to enter a low power mode when inactive if the energy saver settings are set to put the HD to sleep when inactive.
The power used by a single 3.5" hard disk is minimal (5-8W). Hibernation mode usually drops the HD energy use to 2-4W. To put this into perspective, upgrading the Mac Pro video card or adding a second video card will probably use 10-20x more power.
The eSATA HD will last the longest if never turned on. However, I am not sure that sleep mode by itself will significantly lengthen the life of the HD. From my experience, most of the HDs I use daily tend to have a life span of approximately 2->3 years. I also find that by year 3, they are usually technologically obsolete.
I prefer the external eSATA HD stay active when turned on. This avoids delays from waking from disk hibernation mode and seems to provide a more stable HD operating environment. I would not trade the speed of eSATA for a FireWire 800 connection.
    Have fun!

  • Using generic drivers in 64-bit mode for eSATA card with Marvell 88sx7042

Hello, all. I'm wondering if anyone knows of a way to plug the eSATA card's pnp info into, for example, one the plugins in the IOATAFamily kext so that it will mount in 64-bit mode. I've tried this, and simply inserting the supplied kext in the IOATAFamily kext -- the card is recognized in 32-bit mode, but in 64-bit mode, the card is recognized, but System Profiler reports that no drivers are installed. Of course, my generic JMicron card will load, but it is not Port-Multiplier aware, which renders it useless as the relevant external is a hardware RAID. TIA for any replies.

Transferring photos from camera or memory card causes iPhoto to hang up with the spinning beach ball - why?  This happens only on a 5 year old iMac running 10.6.8.  It is a recent developmemt.  All other machines have no problen with the same card.

That sends a crash report. Its doubtful that these are ever seen by a human being, but more likely datamined. Sending feedback reaches an actual person.
My guess from yourdescription is that the portion of the OS (note, OS, not iPhoto) that manages the importing process is what's crashing.

The iPhone is most likely locked to the network of the company you purchased the iPhone for. You'll need to contact the mobile provider to unlock it. They are the only one's who can unlock it.

  • ESATA Card for 1.8GHz Single CPU (Late 2004) Power Mac G5 Tower

I have an unusual issue. I purchased the LaCie d2 quadra 500GB external hard drive. What attracted me to this drive is the ability to interface it by USB 2.0, Firewire 400, Firewire 800 or eSATA. Of course, eSATA looks like it would provide the best throughput. So, I asked the rep at MacMall to suggest a compatible eSATA card for my machine. He suggested LaCie part number 710372 which is a PCI card with two eSATA ports on it.
When it arrived, I checked the specs on the package and found that it requires a "PCI slot (32 bits 66Mhz; PCI 2.3 compliant interface)". When I checked Apple's web site it looks like my machine has the following caution "Warning: Do not use PCI cards that function only at 66 MHz in the 33 Mhz PCI slots. Damage to your equipment could result...". So, I called LaCie support to check this before I installed the card. LaCie support checked with their technicians and I was finally told that this card did have the ability to operate at 33 Mhz but it wasn't listed on the package.
So, I installed the card and then brought my machine up. It seemed to run normally. So, I attached the eSATA cable to the hard drive and then to one of the ports on the card. So far, so good. Then, I powered the drive up and it appeared on the desktop. I then fired up Disk Utility and erased the drive. That worked fine. Next, I tried to copy files to it and that worked.
As a matter of course, I always like to erase a new drive with the "write zeros to all sectors". This verifies that every sector on the drive can be written to without any problems. I don't know if this really accomplishes anything. But, it would seem to validate that the drive works fine.
So, I started this process knowing that it would take a long time for a drive this large (500 GB). This seemed to proceed normally as I checked it from time to time. But, after a number of hours (with only 13 minutes remaining), the entire system hung. I could not do anything except press the button on the front of the machine.
After the machine came back up, it seemed to run normally. But, as I started running applications, I could tell all was not well. The system hung from time to time. Each time, it took 10 or 15 minutes to become responsive.
Finally, I got disgusted and powered everything down and removed the suspect PCI card. Since I did that, the machine works fine.
The drive is now connected using the Firewire 800 cable and seems to work fine. But, it doesn't seem especially fast. I have other drives attached using Firewire 400. Is it possible to have drives attached to both Firewire busses and still get the performance advertised by Firewire 800?
Also, is there an eSATA card that will work in my machine and still provide the advertised eSATA performance (1.5Gbits per second/150MB/second)?
With the drive connected to the Firewire 800 port, it honestly doesn't seem any faster than any of the other Firewire 400 drives.

I didn't say what to do, only options and tried to point out WHY.
This is what I know, these are possible explanations. And alternatives.
most PCI cards are NOT a fixed 66MHz, very very small market. And most PCI slots are not 66MHz only. The Blue G3 and Xserve have used 66MHz PCI.
Your card should work. eSATA is slightly better than FW800. But you are going through a 'bridge' between the drive and the PCI card, usually Oxford 924 chipset.
A direct SATA case for $68 would let you use two drives and get the 75MB/sec writing speed, which is about as much as you can expect from most SATA drives and in G5 anyway.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MESATATBEK/
And here is a nice 500GB drive for $99
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Maxtor/7H500F0/
Connect it to one of the eSATA ports on your LaCie SATA PCI card.
And yes, you have the single drive now.
When installing cards and drives, reset-nvram - either zap the pram from cold startup or boot into Open Firmware and type the reset-nvram and reset-all from there.
I know lots of people use and are happy with LaCie and D2. I am not one of them (I use to buy LaCie when it was Quantum back in early 90s).

  • Esata card shutting down my mac

I have a situation with a new esata card. I have been having FE problems with a Presonus Firestudio Mobile not syncing because it is on the same FW bus as a Lacie Quatro 2D.
It was suggested I get an esata card and I bought the newer technologie MAX power esata 6GB PCIe 2.0.
I put the esata card in slot number #2 or the 16x of my mac pro. It worked for about 5 minutes then my mac kept shutting down. No matter what I did the mac shut down. There shouldn't be a problem here. I had to take the card out and everything works normally now (no power shutdown)
Do I have the card in the wrong slot. Should it be in 3 or 4?
My drive is powered by a wall wart and presonus is FW powered. The card is esata 6.0 and my lacie is esata 3.0.
    Any ideas?

a card working properly shouldn't shut down your mac. Unless it's drawing too much power.
isolate your system by not using the FW devices.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 reset SMC
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379 reset NVRAM
try the computer with the card; but not the esata drive; see if you still have the issue.
if you do still have the issue. I'd talk to the place of sell about return exchange or talk to the manufacture about warranty service.
if you don't. try testing the esata card with another esata hard drive. (that is if you have one) again see if you have the issue.

  • Do esata cards block audio out?

question for users. im planning on upgrading to an esata card with LaCie 500gb firewire/esata (1.5) external.
    1. although it is only e1.5, will this be faster and just as reliable as firewire 800?
    2. i use my mbp as a media center...will the card block my audio out? ive heard stories about cards popping out. true or no?

OK. Sorry couldn't be more definitive. I have a couple of cards including a Nitro FW card, but they are at my other home so I can't test to see how much clearance is provided. I don't recall, however, that either of the cards extended in width past the width of the slot itself, thus leaving the clearance you observe with no card installed. But I can't verify that for you (I'm 3600 miles away from my other home!)
