  • RAC Voting disk recommended size?

    Hi RAC gurus
what is the Voting disk recommended size?
i need to do an appropriate size , so when i back up using dd command , it don't take very long
Am i missing something? , can i create a very big one , say 10G , then backup only the used portion
    Thanks for help

You asked if you are missing something and my initial thought is that what you missed was reading the docs.
First of all the recommended size is clearly stated in the docs ... so I am not going to hand it to you and force you to read them. I hope everyone else does so too.
Second of all, and most importantly, if you have any concept of what the Voting Disk is ... why on earth would you think that making a large one, or a small one, has any relevance to its use? Are you planning to build a cluster larger than 128 nodes?
    PS: What is 10g ... is this 10.1.0.2 or 10.1.0.3 or 10.1.0.4 or 10.2.0.1 or ....
PPS: Given that you didn't read the docs ... it would be interesting to know, too, your operating system, your cache fusion interconnect solution, your shared storage solution, and how you are planning to define your VIPs. But I will leave that for the future as no doubt you will stub your toe on each if you don't get to those docs and read them with great care.
My apology for being a bit harsh here but your chances of success, in RAC, are precisely zero if you do not understand these things. And I am really tired of people blaming Oracle and RAC for what they did to themselves.

  • Scratch disk recommendations

Hi all. Wading into FCE with my 3.5 version purchased a year or so ago. I am shopping for a good scratch disk to work on a project that will begin with about 16 or so hours of footage that I will boil down to maybe an hour or more. I have always used LaCie drives, though I have an open mind. I have been looking at 800 firewire drives by LaCie, specifically the 500 GB Rugged mobile drive and the significantly cheaper d2 Quadra Hard Drive. The Quadra also has an eSATA interface, which I guess I can make use of through my card slot on my MacBook Pro. Any recommendations? Is 800 firewire good enough? Any problems with a mobile versus a desktop? Thanks tons in advance.

First off, FW400 is good enough for most video, esp. when coupled with a decent 7200 rpm hard drive. FW800 is 'better' aka faster but you won't necessarily be able to take advantage of the higher spec depending on what kind of video work you are doing and what hard drive it is coupled with.
I'd stay away from the Rugged Mobile and any other drive that's bus powered and has a 5400rpm drive inside. Neither is great for video work. Let me put that another way - it's asking for problems.
The d2 Quadra is a great drive, it would be hard to go wrong with it. I have some and they are workhorses.
Regarding your footage - 16 hours of DV will require about 210 GB. And if you're doing HD you may need as much as 800GB @ 1080i. Take that into consideration in your purchase.
AND, don't forget about backup storage. 16 hours of video takes, well, 16 hours to capture ... and recapture ... so having a duplicate copy on a backup disk can be awfully handy.

  • Scratch Disk Recommendation

I have until recently been using a seagate goflex, with a firewire 800 adapter, as a scratch disk for FCE. Yesterday whilst editing the hard drive started ticking. I quickly removed it, though after contacting seagate it didnt look hopeful. Therefore i have lost the last three weeks of render files, unless i pay hundreds to get it recovered.
As everyone knows hard drives fail, so i was thinking of investing in a couple of hard drives in a RAID. However after browsing the internet i am very confused as to which option to choose; some seem extremely expensive, and some fairly cheap.
As i have the older MBP it has a Express card port, so i would like to upgrade from firewire to SATA, as before i was experiencing dropped frames.
If anyone has any advice, or knows of a product that would fit the bill, it would be extremely helpful.
    Thankyou

First, losing render files is not the end of the world.  You can always re-create them by re-rendering.
Regarding external drives, and since you have an ExpressCard port, I would suggest:
1 - G-Tech:  GDrive, GRAID, GSafe or GSpeed
2 - OWC : Guardian Maximus or similar drive depending on your needs.  OWC also carry RAID enclosures if you prefer to 'build your own'
    3 - Lacie RAID or d2 Quadra/Quadra Enterprise drives
Regarding RAID, a few tips -
1 - RAID is not backup.  Raid-1 provides mirroring (duplication) on 2 drives, but it is not backup.  Most lost file/folder problems occur as a result of user error or software error, not because a drive failed.  Make sure you have adequate backup capabilities before investing in RAID.
2 - It is better to use hardware RAID than software RAID.  If you go the RAID route, get an external drive (or enclosure) that provides hardware RAID.  Don't try to get by with Disk Utility or any other app that support software RAID of multiple external hard drives - you would only be asking for trouble in the long term.

  • DVD disks recommendations for backups

I have 25GB of photos, and need asap to back them all up. External drive is nice, but not now.
What DVD disks are recommended for this ?
Which ones have a better protection, like double, triple layers...?
    Thanks!

Since my iPhoto Library is 25GB, I'll need about 6 disks. Will it work ?
Or I need Roxio's "Toast", which is quite expensive ?
    Any free alternativers ?
You will need something - I use the backup program that comes with .Mac (mobile me)
Or you can export all your photos and manually break them down into single DVD folders and burn them
There are other packages that will burn multiple DVDs - but since I do not use them I can not speak to them

  • Order restore disk, recommend adding 1 yr ADP protection

I have made my own full restore disks.  See one of my other posts for the link and directions to make FULL backup disks.  If you haven't I recommend doing so.  Or at least a full restore image to a 16GB thumb drive.
I just called Lenovo as I wanted to find out what the actual cost is for the "official" set of disks.  It is FREE if you cann within warranty period.  I highly recommend anyone calling.  Get the disks!
While on the phone I inquired about adding accidental damage protection.  It is after all a laptop and it is going to be on the move.  I usually add ADP to all laptops, nothing else by the way, and have found you have to go through the maker of the laptop.  In store warranty extensions are not typically ADP warranties.
By calling there was a discount and for 50 dollars added one year of ADP.  After a year if needs some major over haul value/cost equation ususally ends up with "Buy new laptop" anyway.
For 50 dollars I added 1 yr of ADP and have the 4 disk set of the full restore disks on their way.  I can remove the restore partitions and expand the primary parttion and make full use of the internal hard drive storage space.
I encouraged you to call the toll free number for your product and geographical area.  The peace of mind worth every penny of 50 dollars.

    Hi,
For RAC you will have as much threads as instances.
Can you change the query to:
    select distinct sequence#, thread# from v$archived_log where FIRST_TIME BETWEEN TO_DATE('03/11/2010 15:30:32', 'MM/DD/YYYY HH24:MI:SS') AND TO_DATE('03/11/2010 17:35:08', 'MM/DD/YYYY HH24:MI:SS') order by 1
    You can than restore with
    restore archivelog sequence between 150860 and xxx thread 1;
restore archivelog sequence between 176699 and yyy thread 2; (I guess this sequence comes from the second thread)
    etc.

  • W530 eSata expresscard 34 recommendation

    Hi,
I need to get an eSata port on a W530 and I would like to get a card that's fully compatible with full bandwidth and no BSOD.
    Could anyone recommend card(s)?
    Thank you

I'm also in the market for a reputable brand of SATAIII eSATA ExpressCard. Glad I ran into this thread. I just looked through this Addonics Card recommended but I could not find indication of its port-multiplier support on the following official web page.
I have a 5-day eSATA external HDD enclosure and I'm dying for a true SATAIII ExpressCard with port-multiplier support.
Could any current owner of the Addonics Card confirm this does support port-multiplier? BTW could someone recommend some real SATAIII eSATA cable as well?

  • ESata Expresscard/34 Recommendations

I am planning on getting an eSata express card for my MacBook Pro and am trying to figure out what would be the best card to get. I have read over several of the threads in these forums, but haven't really found solid recommendations for any of the various cards. I have a 15" macbook pro running the most recent version of Leopard and a WD my book external harddrive (home edition). What express card would you recommend for this setup?

I also have this card which works fine on a ProAvio Raid 5.
Transferring 30GB of video files from a graid2 on the internal FW800 bus to the Proavio Raid using the express e-sata card gave about 51.2 ish MB/sec. is that what I should expect.
There is nothing else on the internal FW bus.
I also have a sonnet express 34 FW800 card which DOES NOT WORK, with these drives.
Has any one used this card?

  • Bacup disk: recommendations for what to buy

I want to buy an external disk to 1) create a bootable version of my hard drive, 2) do incremental backups of files, 3) store picture, movie, and music files.
I have two PowerBooks (60 gb disk; 80 gb disk) and I want to do this for both of them.
    Questions,
    - What's the best way to share the external disk with both machines?
    - Should I buy a firewire/USB or NSA disk?
    - What is a good size?
    - What brands are the most reliable? (I think I want one that comes bundled with Retrospect Express)
    - What features should I look for in such a disk?
    - Is Retrospect the best of breed for backup s/w?
    Thanks.
    PowerBook G4 12-inch (x2)   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    > What's the best way to share the external disk with both machines?
You can buy an external 3.5" desktop drive with a minimum capacity of 160GB and then partition it into two volumes, using Disk Utility, and then use one volume/partition for each PowerBook. Alternative, if you have the budget for it, simply buy a pair of 160GB drives.
If you wanted a an external portable 2.5" drive, then a 160GB may be quite costly compared to a 3.5" desktop version.
    > Should I buy a firewire/USB or NSA disk?
Firewire. USB drives will not be bootable for your PowerBooks.
As for NAS devices, I don't like the many Windows-based third party options available because of... Windows. It causes too many problems for my liking - and you cannot use it to boot up your PBs in the event of an emergency.
    > What is a good size?
For a single desktop drive, at least 160GB or as large as you can afford if you also want to do incremental backups. However I am wary of putting everything onto a single drive - if something goes wrong with the drive then you can lose everything. Personally I prefer to have multiple disks of smaller capacities.
    > What brands are the most reliable? (I think I want one that comes bundled with Retrospect Express)
I used to like LaCie products but now feel their recent efforts are less reliable. So now my current preference is for G-Tech drives.
A third alternative is to source your own enclosure and drive. That way you can choose exactly the components required. Might also save a little money if you had the budget and opted for multiple drives.
    > What features should I look for in such a disk?
For me reliability is king for a backup drive. Longer warranty is also a bonus. Speed is less important.
    > Is Retrospect the best of breed for backup s/w?
For backup software, whilst Retrospect Express is OK, I prefer SuperDuper! but I also use Data Backup. Perhaps even Deja Vu might be an option.
In the pre-OS X days Retrospect, for me and many other people, was the standard - even though it wasn't the most intuitive or easiest to use or the quickest. Now there is so much more to choose from, and many are VERY good.

  • If you have an SSD system drive, is a second dedicated scratch disk recommended?

Looking to buy a new MacBook Pro which has one PCIe-based 512gb SSD system drive. Unlike earlier MacBook Pro models, there is no internal DVD drive to replace w. a second disk drive.
I know that with HDD's a dedicated scratch disk that run's at least as fast as your application drive enhances performance of Photoshop. Is this also true with SSD's?  Thanks.

Here's a suggestion (not aimed at anyone in particular, and I realize it may not be possible in all systems)...
If you're going to set up a system to access a certain amount of storage interactively - and what I mean is storage that's used all the time in the normal operation of the computer - consider making one big system partition out of a RAID array of SSDs.
With I/O operations averaging larger than the bare minimum (e.g., 4K bytes), RAID 0 effectively adds together the performance of the drives.  This is because there's effectively no seek time with an SSD.  It essentially randomly accesses stored data by address (it's quite complicated internally, but externally it works out that latency is almost negligible - literally measured as a few millionths of a second on a modern drive).
    So...
Consider building your next system with multiple SSDs on task, making up an array of, say, a few terabytes.  This yields the following:
Everything done by the system is done at the speed that's the sum of the drive speeds.  With a modern system using SATA III, that's essentially about half a gigabyte per second per drive.  Imagine throughput of more than a gigabyte a second - that's real.  Forget about dedicating drives to tasks - EVERYTHING gets the benefit of the entire RAID array speed.
Since latency is virtually nonexistent, a great deal of multitasking can be done on the same volume without introducing any thrashing.  Photoshop can be writing to scratch, the system swapping like crazy, and you just keep working without notice.
Everything's consolidated on one volume, which simplifies a lot of things (e.g., backup is simpler, applications install where they like on the C: volume).
All the free space pools together, so what's available as transient storage for whatever you're doing at the time is maximized.  This tends to offset the extra cost of SSDs some.
SSDs themselves are fairly new tech, and it's not been widely known that they RAID together EXTREMELY well.  They really do.
People sometimes worry that using multiple drives to make up a single volume increases the chances for failure, but consider that SSDs are solid state, and so by nature have a good bit higher reliability (higher MTBF; often 2 million hours), and they don't generate nearly as much heat (they consume just a few watts).  Having SSDs in your system can actually increase the reliability of everything somewhat, because when everything is cooler it lasts longer.  Plus they don't make any vibration.
This is not fantasy, I've done it.
My current Dell workstation has a nearly 2 TB C: volume made up of four 480 GB SSDs.  My sustainable disk throughput is literally around 1.7 gigabytes per second (that's 15 times faster than a typical single hard drive).  I do also have some HDDs in the system, but they normally spend all day spun down.  They're for backup and very low access storage (e.g., downloads I've accumulated over time).
I wait for NOTHING on this system.
Oh, and it's been 100.0% reliable with this setup for 2-1/2 years now.  ZERO glitches.
    -Noel

  • Pro-100 terrible disk printing color cast

I am getting a terrible yellow/orangecolor cast when printing disks on my Pro100 printer.  I'm using the latest Easy Photoprint EX software on Windows 7 64-bit to print on Verbatim AquaAce Glossy disks.  These disks printed beautifully on the Epson Artisan 730 printer I used to own.  Literally no color issues ever.  However on the Pro-100 prints them up borderline unusable.
All other prints from the printer on regular and photo paper turn out perfectly.  I've literally never owned a printer with output this good - except for the disks.  I'm using the "Printable Disk (recommended)" setting with print quality set to "high".
The Photoprint software has ZERO color controls so I am unable to correct the color cast in software.  What's going on here?  Do I have any other options to try and fix this?

The fact you paper prints look great.  And you tried two different brands of DVD's with the same results tells us something.
The printer and the computer is working OK.  There is somethign else that is awry.  Some setting is worng.  With out knowing your complete process it is not possibile to pin point it here.  More info from you as to what you actually do is needed.
    Exactly what you do!
Switching disks is not likely to help.  You don't need the 'High' quality seting as 'Standard' works well..

  • Permissions errors after clean installation of 10.7.2

hey, I'm sorry for the length of this thread.
after upgrading to Lion (via mac app store) from the newest snow leopard, the system's performance had become worst.
then, i decided to back up all of my files manually and do a clean install making a lion 10.7.2 bootable DVD from the .dmg file I purchased, and converting a USB flash drive to the lion recovery disk assistant.
I decided not to back up anything (including user) using time machine and migration assisnant.
after finishing with this process I've created a new administrator user and verified and repaired disk & permissions, and then moved back all of my data from an external HDD. putting everything back to place where it was before formatting, and changing all of the system preferences, apple software (iTunes, Safari, iPhoto, Finder) one by one.
    of course, software updates, restarts.
I've done a few things that I might shoudn't do:
copying the entire 'Music' folder of my user with all of its contents like 'iTunes Library Extras.itdb', 'iTunes Library Genius.itdb', 'iTunes Library.itl', 'iTunes Music Library.xml'.
after that I also did itunes file > import playlist > Library.xml  (which i exported to external HDD before formatting).
unfortunately, something has got very wrong with this process. now these brand new awful issues came up:
    1. everytime after logging in/restarting, it seems like the Finder 'doesn't remember' the changes i have made. and I have to manually change it back:
    - menu bar is going back to default (brings back BlueTooth and Time Machine's icons, for example)
    - the dock comes back to the default (only apple apps in the specific order, the stock icon beside the trash comes back to be Documents, etc.)
    - expose gestures are disabled again (like the default)
    2. repeatedly, every time when opening iTunes i see the Software License Agreement, scroll down, agree and iTunes refreshes itself to the default pref (with the ping window and 'iTunes Tutorials' splash screen, prefs like "prevent devices from syncing automatically" are disabled again etc.)
the itunes album artwork screensaver says - there are no album artworks in your itunes library.
    3. on Safari, it basicly does the same as with itunes. 'forgets' all the changes. (bookmarks, bookmarks bar is reverted to the default apple, yahoo, googlemaps, forgets the homepage).
    4. iphoto - 'iphoto has detected inconsistencies in your library' every time.
Then, with DU i performed a permissions verify:

after the repair i did verify again and nothing has really changed.
I'm confuses. what have gone wrong with the permissions, libraries, .plists or account...
it does work better then before the formatting in terms of stabillity (safari used to crash a lot, left click menu is faster now, restarting also)
but of course, I can't live with the fact the system doesn't remember anything I do and acts almost like 'new' everytime I open an app or restart.
is it reversible, repairable, fixable, or should I go with the last preffered option on backing up everything from the Carbon Copy Cloner user.sparseimage I have created before formatting, and maybe revert everithing back, with all of the pros and cons?
    Thank you for reading this.
    have a nice one
    Aviha

I had a similar problem with my Mid-2010 MBP after upgrading to LION and using Target Disk Mode wherein I simply dragged and dropoped my I-tunes Library from my other MBP to the newly updated one. I began getting the same permission error messages when using DU. The problem lies in the UIagent.app as indicated in the log. The ONLY way to correct this problem I found after literally weeks of heartache was to restore my MBP to factory settings and reinstall my apps and OSX in this way, EXACTLY this way: Yes, it may be regarded as overkill to most, but I guarantee that you will be saving yourself umpteen amounts of time and frustration blindly throwing a dart hoping to hit the bullseye. Please read and print this page before you begin.
    1. reset PRAM click here to learn how to reset PRAM
    2. COMPLETE format  hard drive and reinstall of my ORIGINAL Operating System (using the grey installation disks provided to me when i bought the computer).:
Put your install DVD into the optical drive and reboot. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option key until the Install Disk shows up). That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Just press theReturn key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window.Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. You should see your hard drive in the left hand column along with your other drives.
Click on the drive and select the Erase tab. Set the format value to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and click the Erase button. After that has finished select the Partition tab. Type in aName for your hard drive and select how many partitions you want from the Volume Scheme. The usual setting is one partition. Click on the Options button after you've selected apartition to make sure it's set for GUID. Then click the Apply button and after the Partitioning is done quitDisk Utility. You can now follow the instructions on the install screen and install your Operating System (Snow Leopard). DO NOT MIGRATE ANY DATA OR USE TIME MACHINE. INSTALL FROM THE ORIGINAL DISKS ONLY.
After OSX Install, Insert your Applications Install DVD Disk and install.
Now run Software Update from the Apple Menu and update and Install any Updates.
3: Then BEFORE upgrading to LION and BEFORE migrating or copying any data to the new system via whatever source, you need to enable the Root User. But before you do this read here (and read it carefully) to leard about the "root" user.
    4. After you are logged in as the Root user, you can now begin installing whatever Applications PACKAGES to your computer individually from either: A.) original cd/dvd install disk (recommended - if you have the disk, use it!), B.) Downloaded from the web (make sure you are using an ethernet/wired connection), C.) previously downloaded Application Package, or D.) by using Target Disk Mode via firewire connected to another Mac Apple doc.#58583.   (DO NOT use time machine and do not drag and drop Applications to install - You can drag and drop the packages to the desktop and install but not by moving the wanted Applications Icon into the applications menu).
    5. After you have the applications you want installed, run software update again and install any recommended updates.
    6. Open Disk Utility and verify/repair the disk permissions.  (if no issues are present, go to #7) You need to run repairs at least twice consecutively within the root account, restarting afterwards and logging in as Root again.
    7. Open I-Tunes.Open Finder and move your I-Tunes library over by locating the Music folder which contains your music (i.e. /Users/**/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Music). DO NOT move the Music folder that is present as a subfolder to the user you are logged in as (i.e.: /Users/**/Music). Make sure it's the folder "Music" that is a subfolder of "I-Tunes Media" which contains all the actual subfolders of your library (i.e.: /Users/jmebenton/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Music/30 Seconds to Mars). The Music folder indicated in my example is the one you should drag and drop into your I-Tunes Music Library in the Open I-Tunes window.
    8. After your music transfers, Open Disk Utility and verify/repair the disk permissions AGAIN.  (if no issues are present, try to repair the permissions anyway) You need to run repairs at least twice consecutively within the root account, restarting afterwards and logging in as Root again.
    9. Now transfer any files or data you need. (DO NOT UPGRADE TO LION YET)
    10. LOG OUT and LOG IN as an Administrator (not the Root "Other User").
    11. Install LION
    12. When LION is completely installed, restart and log-in as the Root user.
    13. Open Disk Utility and verify/repair the disk permissions AGAIN.  (if no issues are present, try to repair the permissions anyway) You need to run repairs at least twice consecutively within the root account, restarting afterwards and logging in as Root again.
    14. Disable the root user
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, and then click Users & Groups.Open Users & Groups preferences
Click the lock icon to unlock it, and then type an administrator name and password.
In the Network Account Server section, click Edit.
    Click Open Directory Utility.
Click the lock icon to unlock it, and then enter your administrator name and password.
Choose Edit > Disable Root User.
    15. Now Log into your computer and ENJOY!!!

  • Tutorial - How to triple boot OSX, Linux and Windows 8.1 with a shared Data Partition without any third party Win / OSX softwares

This is not a question, but rather a personal guide that has proved to be running successfully.
I would like to thank numerous sources, including Christopher Murphy's suggestions at:
Re: Repairing Boot Camp after creating new partition
Before proceeding, there are certain concepts needs to know:
Why Boot Camp does NOT allow further partitioning of drives after Windows has installed?
Answer: Because the way Apple configures the Mac to be recognized as non UEFI capable system on Windows.
Quote from Christopher Murphy based on the above line:
However, Windows on Macs right now use CSM-BIOS mode in Mac firmware that presents BIOS to Windows rather than EFI. Windows thinks it's on a BIOS computer, and therefore mandates the use of MBR for boot disks, rather than GPT. So that's why we have this hybrid MBR+GPT approach on Mac with Windows on it. You inherit the limitations of MBR, which is four primary partitions.
    So what does it means?
It means that OSX + EFI + Recovery HD + Boot Camp partition = 4 primary partitions and thus any attempt to modify the disk will render booting issues of either system.
For more info on GPT (GUID Partition Table disks VS Master Boot Record or MBR in short, you may visit: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/dn640535%28v=vs.85%29.a spx)
    So, how to overcome it?
The general guideline is to install ALL GPT ready OS first then create a Data partition, before installing Windows (Which is again, NOT supported GPT due to EFI configuration by Apple where end-users are not able to modify it).
Interestingly, since Mac Pro 2013 Late supports only Windows 8 and above, thus it is not known if this CSM-BIOS applies to it or not.
Do take note that GPT disks in Windows can only be booted when the system meets the 2 requirements:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/dn640535%28v=vs.85%29.a spx#gpt_faq_win7_boot
    1) Windows x64 version (Which is a must for newer Macs. If you cannot go to Boot Camp 5, then you need Windows 7 x86 or 32bit version)
    2) UEFI system. However, Windows sees all Macs (With the possibility of Mac Pro 2013 Late is an exception. To be determined) as BIOS, or rather NON-UEFI system.
In short, booting on GPT disks is not possible for Mac in Windows.
    Summary,
It is tested that a combination of the following will not work:
    - OSX + Windows + Linux
    - Windows + OSX + Linux
    - Windows + Linux + OSX
Usually it can create the system un-bootable or OSX refused to install due to the system does not recognize such partitions and / or Disk Utility refused to format a free space. An example screen-shot is provided below:
The error message is shown as
Title: "Failed to erase volume" Message: "Failed to wipe volume, as an error occurred: MediaKit has reported that the device does not have enough free space to execute the requested operations."
The second thing is about the preparations we need.
    1) 1X Windows 7 or 8 DVD or USB thumbdrive
1A) If you uses a DVD to install, you will need another thumbdrive to load the BootCamp drivers for Windows as well as may requires an external DVD drive for newer Macs
    2) 1X Linux DVD of your choice. Personally I choose Fedora 20.
    So ready? Let's go.
    1. Using Disk Utility, shrink the OSX's partition size to what is needed. For me, I give OSX 150GB. Do NOT create any new partition.
Disk Utility should see something like below whereby only OSX partition is left with desired disk space. The remaining space are to be unused disk space for the moment.
Note: Click on the top most item that should start with the size of your HDD / SSD. Then clicked on "Partition" and specify the desired OSX size. Hit "Apply" after that.
2: Download Boot Camp drivers only via Boot Camp Assistant. The USB thumbdrive shall be used later after Linux's installation.
Boot Camp Assistant should see this:
I have only selected "Download latest Windows Support Files from Apple"
    3. Insert Linux DVD, reboot Mac into EFI mode (The left most first "EFI mode").
Note 1: Before rebooting, please plugged in an Ethernet adapter because Wi-Fi drivers is not installed.
Note 2: For Thunderbolt adapters, it must be plugged in before reboot as hot-swapping is not supported under Linux. More on the tips at the end of this article.
Note 3: Press and hold "Option" after the screen turns black. Release Option key after you see the image as below:

For the unfortunate part that did not make it on time to edit the images:
    9. Install the Windows Support software from your CD/USB drive to gain full functionality of your computer. Reboot and go to Windows again.
Note 1: You may choose to eject disc at this point of time. For Apple SuperDrive users, you will need to wait until the drivers (i.e. Boot Camp support files) is installed and rebooted before ejecting is reasonably possible (As I failed to figured out how to right click without the drivers)
Note 2: Unlike Windows 7 on KBase article TS4599 Keyboard/trackpad inoperative, black screen, or alert messages when installing Windows 7, USB stick can be plugged in after the Windows installation is done. This is because Windows 7 (And probably Windows 7 with SP1 DVD) does not have a built in USB 3 drivers when it was released back in 2009 where USB3 has not arrived then.
Note 3: Due to TPM, Bitlocker is not supported without the use of thumbdrives.
    10. Using Disk Management to determine the given drive letter for the DATA partition (DO NOT DELETE and RECREATE partition or else you can goodbye to booting Linux and OSX). Disk Management will not allow you to format it as exFAT / FAT32 in graphical way.
Note: You may remove or modify some of the disk letters in Disk Management. However, do NOT remove / modfify the drive letter for the partition with 200MB size in HFS. This is because it will disallow booting of Linux and neither could Windows nor OSX can do anything EXCEPT to reinstall Linux only.
    11. Open Command Prompt in Administrator Mode (Important!!), and key in the following command:
    format F: /FS:exFAT
Give this volume a label after it has successfully formatted before hitting "Enter" again.
Note: Mine Data partition was assigned as F drive. Please make necessary adjustment to "F:" should your Data partition is assigned to other letters.
    12. After that, Setup your Data partition structure as you like.
Tip: Minimally create the important folders such as:
    - Music
    - Documents
    - Movie (Videos)
    - Downloads
    - Pictures
All these folders are commonly used by the 3 OSes. I do NOT recommend changing of /home (OSX and / or Linux) and / or user home directory (Windows) either partially or as a whole.
This is because of compatibility issue.
On a side note, iTunes Media Library used in OSX and Windows are NOT able to be use interchangably due to hard-coded path used.
    13. Useful troubleshooting in Fedora / Linux:
    With references to these:
    http://chaidarun.com/fedora-mbp
    http://anderson.the-silvas.com/2014/02/14/fedora-20-on-a-macbook-pro-13-late-201 3-retina-display/
    http://unencumberedbyfacts.com/2013/08/16/linux-on-a-macbook-pro-101/
I would like to highlight a few important points:
    1) Wi-Fi driver:
    http://rpmfusion.org/Configuration
Note 1: The sound driver should be installed at Out of Box Experience. However, the Wi-Fi is not.
Note 2: Install both free and non-free repository. By the way, some other software like VLC can only be found after the Free Repository is installed.
Search for "akmod-wl" in Gnome-Package-Installer in order to install Wi-Fi drivers
Note 3: For those who do not have Ethernet adapters and their Mac does NOT have a built-in Ethernet port, it is recommended to get one. This is because Fedora 20 does not have a good support for iPhone USB tethering. Unsure for Andriod / Blackberry / Windows Phone users.
    2) Grub Menu:
It will show several options to boot into OSX, even of the capability to boot into x86 or x64 mode. However, neither of them is bootable except Linux and the rescue.
Hence, it is recommended to remove the items by hand in this file:
    /boot/efi/EFI/fedora/grub.cfg
    Command to be used:
    "sudo gedit /boot/efi/EFI/fedora/grub.cfg"
    Parts to be removed:
    - For any extra kernels, delete the target entry by locating the line "menuentry" under "/etc/grub.d/10_linux" sector to one line above the next "menuentry".
It is recommended to keep one main kernel, and one recovery at the minimal.
    - For other OS, delete all the entry (Since neither it can works) under "/etc/grub.d/30_os-prober" sector without removing the lines starts with ###.
    Auto Mount exFAT partition:
    - After installing extra packages for exFAT support (Since it is not supported by Fedora 20 from a default installation), you may wish to edit "/etc/fstab" in order to mount the exFAT partition during boot time.
    Command to be used:
    "sudo gedit /etc/fstab"
Add the following line in gedit:
    UUID=702D-912D /run/media/Samuel/DATA                   exfat    defaults        1 2
Note 1: For DATA partition, OSX & Boot Camp partition, Fedora defaults mounts under: "/run/medua/<Username with case sensitive>/<Partition Label Name>"
Note 2: UUID is unique ID. You can find out the UUID by:
Step 1: First determine the DATA partition number:
    "sudo gdisk /dev/sda"
Step 2: Determine the UUID of this partition number:
    "sudo blkid /dev/sda8"
    Reference 1: http://manpages.courier-mta.org/htmlman5/fstab.5.html
    Reference 2: http://liquidat.wordpress.com/2007/10/15/short-tip-get-uuid-of-hard-disks/
    3) Overheating CPU
Solution is to issue the following command in Linux terminal: su -c "echo -n 1 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/intel_pstate/no_turbo"
    4) System resumes immediately after suspend
Solution is to issue the following command in Linux terminal: su -c "echo XHC1 > /proc/acpi/wakeup"
    5) What does not works well out of box:
    - Both GNOME and KDE's fonts are too small to be readable for out of box experience. Additional configuration is a need. (Some of the info can be found on "More Tips" later)
    - Thunderbolt hotplugging is NOT supported under Windows and Linux so far. Neither FaceTime HD camera works as well.
    - The red light in Headphone jack is always on. I do not have luck in switching off the light without losing the sound.
Note 1: It is determined that the module "snd_hda_intel" is used by both cards (HDMI and normal output)
Note 2: It is also known that blacklisting it can switch off the redlight at the price of muting the system.
Note: Based on this article, http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1574
A Mac (Except Mac Pro) needs servicing when there is a red light while the system fails to detect internal speakers. However, this article does NOT applies to this issue.
    5A) More Tips:
    Install gnome-tweak-tool for more customization
    Search for: "gnome-package" to install:
Install Gnome Package Installer for advanced package repository
Install Gnome Package Updater for advanced updates to be install (Whereby Fedora's App Store alike might not show the relevant updates)
    14. Verify if disk is still GPT:
Use Gdisk to determine if the disk is pure GPT:
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1742682
Command: sudo gdisk -l /dev/sda (The entire hard drive)
You should see the MBR is "Protective" instead of anything else.
    15. Congrats, the system is ready for triple boot. (I forgot to eject my Windows DVD when the photo was taken)
Note 1: You cannot set the default startup disk in Linux due to the lack of Boot Camp Control Panel in Linux.
Neither is changing startup disk recommended in Windows due to the inability to display correctly.
For me, I click "Cancel" whenever I am on this tab (Feel free to make other Boot Camp adjustments in other tabs).
Only OSX I know that can show the startup disk options correctly.
Note 2: For some reason, OSX likes to auto mount the EFI partition everytime it boots up. It is not known to have any issue for ejecting other disks or mounting disks via Disk Utility.
Note 3: It is not determined if any Firmware or System upgrades will cause issues. It is only known that all 3 OS's regular updates should not be an issue.
System Updates excludes Mac OSX 10.9.3 updates to OSX 10.9.4 type as I had done it on a OSX 10.9.4 Mac or Windows 8.1 to Windows 8.1 Update 1 since my Windows DVD comes with Update 1.
System Upgrades refers to OSX Mavericks to Yosemite, Fedora 20 to Fedora 21, Windows 8.1 Update 1 to Windows 8.2 / Windows 9 for that matter.
Note 4: Reset SMC and / or PRAM will NOT affect your ability to boot any of the OS (OSX, Recovery HD, Fedora & Windows 8)
    Yup, that is it!

  • Replaced hard drive in dv6 but doesn't complete installation phase

I replaced my hard drive with one of the disks recommended by an HP expert in this forum, and it seemed to go well. After booting with my #1 recovery disc and loading each one when prompted, I got the final prompt/message: "Recovery Preparation is complete. Remove the Recovery Media from the system. After the computer is restarted, the recovery installation process will begin ... Press continue to restart the computer." When I hit the "Continue" button, the screen went dark as if it was restarting. But instead, a black screen with the HP logo in the center appeared, with only the text: " Press the ESC key for Startup Menu" in white letters in the bottom-left corner. I waited about a half hour, then pressed the ESC key, but it didn't change anything. Same HP screen. And that was it -- nothing else happened. I left it on overnight, thinking maybe it takes time to get going, but in the morning, the same screen was there and my laptop was hot as if in use. So I turned it off at that point. What went wrong, and what should I try now?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

If the recovery media is what you are using, then that normally has the best option and best results.  Since that is not working at present, I would try installing from the regular install media.  I know you state that HP does not supply install media and that is correct.  Actually most, if not all OEM's, do not supply media anymore and rely on either Recovery Media
( which is what you have ) or Recovery Paritionon on the hard drive, which you would have when the PC was new.
Since you are using Windows 7 and assuming that is what came with the PC, otherwise you would have install media, then you can make your own install DVD by downloading the image directly from Microsoft.  Making sure to pick the same version that was installed originally then use the key on the Microsoft sticker on the case.
If you have boradband internet it will take about 30 minutes to download the image.

  • Macbook pro will not boot after snow leopard upgrade

My GF has had a macbook pro since mid 2008.  It's been running like a champ since I've known her for the past 3 years with  no issues.  It has/had OSX 10.5.8 installed.  We tried to consolidate all our pictures from all our apple devices and realized she didn't have an icloud on the old 10.5.8 OSX.  So I called apple and they told me to order and install the snow leopard OSX 10.6 first and then upgrade to lion etc after that,  Well we got the disk yesterday popped it in to install and it's been a disaster.... the computer shutdown for what looked like a normal restart during the installation process and never booted back up.  Attempts to manually reboot leave us locked on a grey apple logo screen with spinning gear indefinately whith the Snow Leopard disk installed during boot up.  With the disk removed I get the flashing file folder with a question mark.  I called apple support we tried all the PRAM and SMC resets and then decided that we should go  to the Genius Bar once all those failed.  After an hour and a half drive to the nearest genius bar we were told that the we suddenly had a hardware issue which just happened to coincide with the new OS installation....  I'm not buying it and am looking for some help.  The macbook was running like a champ until we inserted a disk recommended by apple...   Any takers?

You have a five year old computer, so a failing hard drive at this point is not so strange. You have a couple of options you can try. Start with this one, but if it does not work you will have to erase the hard drive. I hope you have a backup of all your files.
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
