Expression tag ${} not working

Question

I am a variable in request in my servlet:
request.setAttribute("ShowMessages", "My Message");
And trying to reterive this message using expression tag:
<TR><TD> ${request.ShowMessages}</TD></TR>
But it gives output ${request.ShowMessages}. It doesn't show my message.
I tried with <TR><TD> ${ShowMessages}</TD></TR>
But it does'nt work.
I am using JVM 1.4.
Please help !!!!

request.setAttribute("showMessages", "My Message");is being used and you have ensured the you haven't destroyed the respective request object. You might have to use
<c:out value="${requestScope.showMessages}"/> or simple
${requestScope.showMessages} EL to render the appropriate value.
