Expression / Volume pedal on channel strips

I need to fade a channel strip in and out using an expression pedal, without affecting the other channel strips on that patch. I'm familiar with assigning the volume pedal at the concert level to control master volume, but this is a function I don't know how to do.
I've tried filtering the expression on the channel strip, but of course that doesn't work, because the pedal is controlling the master volume. Help?

You can assign the volume/expression pedal at the concert, set, or patch level .... depending if you want it doing the same thing at concert level, or to change its function for different patches.
1) learn the pedal in the layout window, so your layout control is visually changing and responding as you move the pedal.
2) in Edit mode, select the patch you want to fix up (concert level, set, or patch .... whichever you want).
3) select the channel strip you want to control.
4) select the volume control you assigned in step 1 on the screen. make sure you can view the inspector(s).
5) in Screen Control Inspector, go to Unmapped, and drill down to the attribute you want to control. If you already have the control mapped, you will need to unmap it first.

  • "expression parameter" on buss channel strips

In MS2 I notice that buss channel strips now include "expression" CC#11 parameter now. Is there a way to filter MIDI CC#11 from the buss channel strips?
I am using a keyboard setup that produces multi MIDI channel data.
    Thanks for any opinions!

    Thank you for your reply.
I'm already using a foot pedal control in the layout for expression control to all soft-synth channels.
So I tried your suggestion at the Concert level, and since it's expression control also, every channel strip with expression is activated when the foot pedal is moved.
    Any thoughts would be appreciated.
    Thanks again!

  • Control only the software instrument of one channel strip at a time with one Controller

    Hi people,
I have a Nord Lead 2 and a Korg Nanokontrol and I want to use these as Midi controllers in the following way, but don't really know how to set up the system:
I have 4 Channelstrips and each has the free software instrument Tyrell N6 inserted. I have the opportunity to change the volume of each channel strip with my faders on the Nanokontrol which works fine and gives me the opportunity to make layers and change also to only use one sound at a time. And this works fine. However, now I want to have the opportunity to change the parameters of each Tyrell with my Nord Lead. But with 4 channelstrips each with a Tyrell N6 I want to have the opportunity to only somehow manipulate only one instance of Tyrell at a time and change the channelstrip for which the Nord Lead manipulates the Tyrell. Is there an opportunity in Mainstage to do that?
Hope it is understandable. Help would be really much appricated. Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Hi DaCaptain,
Thank you very much for your answer. I tried it yesterday, but it doesnt really work for me to be honest. The thing is that I really wanna stick to one patch, so that I can have like one patch for each song.
However, if you might be interested I found a way to do it yesterday on my own. This is how I have done it:
    In Layout-Mode
    - Create Controls for each instance of Tyrell. For my purpose I created 4 times:
                 - controlls for the Filter Section
                 - controls for ADSR1
                 - controls for ADSR2
    - So you have 4 Sections of controllers in Layout Mode. Each meant to controll one Tyrell Instance
    - Now each section gets its own Midi Channel. So all the controllers of section 1 respond to MIDI Channel 1 and the controllers of section 2 respond to MIDI Channel 2 and so on.
    - Now you tell the Nord Lead that it should send via MIDI Channel 1 and you assign the Cutoff-Controller of the Nord Lead to the controller (the one of the first section) that is suppose to control the cutoff of the first Tyrell. And you proceed this way until all the controllers of the first sections are assigned. Then you swith to MIDI Channel 2 on the Nord Lead and assign the Cutoff-Controller of the Nord Lead to the controller (the one of the second section) that is suppose to control the cutoff of the second Tyrell. And here again you proceed this way until all the controllers of the second sections are assigned. Then you go on with the third and fourth section taking MIDI Channel 3 and 4.
    In Edit-Mode
    - In Edit Mode now you of course assign the controllers to the functions in each Tyrell
    Result
    - Now you can switch between the MIDI Channels on the Nord Lead. This is quiet easy because you can assign a MIDI Channel to one of four buttons on the Nord Lead.
    - So if you switch to MIDI Channel 1 you can controll the functions of the first Tyrell and if you switch to MIDI Channel 2 you can controll the functions of the second Tyrell. And all in one Patch with only one controller which is even from the nineties. I find this really great. The only problem is that the Layout might get really messy, if you try to maybe control more functions of each Tyrell. And I really think maybe Mainstage in future could give us the opportunity to create bigger Layouts - maybe with different Windows or something.
Hope you might find this interesting or even helpful.
    See you

  • Channel  strip inserts Logic Express 7.2.3

When I click on the inserts of an Audio Inst track channel strip I may choose Instruments from Logic Express, GarageBand, and Jam Packs 2,3 and 4. When I try this on an Audio Track the insert offers only the Logic Express and GarageBand Instruments but no Jam Packs. After reading ALL the pdf manuals and the M Sitter book, and spending 3 hours every day the last 6 months reading this forum I still don't know the current corrrect file paths for the garageBand and Logic Express 7.2.3 or the Jam Packs 2,3 and4. At the local Apple Store I was shown a version of Logic Express which had ALL these Jam Packs in BOTH types of Audio/Audio Inst tracks.
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   M-Audio 49e USBMIDI Controller

Jam Packs contains loops and instruments, not channel strips. To view your loops go to Audio>Loop Browser. Then you will be able to view all of you JamPacks loops. Also, JamPacks contains new software instruments. To use the software instruments that come with jampacks, go to a software instrument track, then use the EXSP4 sample player as the I/O for the track. Navigate down to GarageBand and the instruments from jampacks should be there. It's not something that really stands out. It's just that it increases the number of instruments by a lot. And with the loops, you can sort out just the jampacks loops to see what it offers.

  • ALL VOLUMES IN ONE PRESET/CHANNEL STRIP

When mixing, is it possible within one song, to save all volumes from both audio and virtual instrument tracks as a preset in one channel strip. And then to be able to flip to another preset for a different set of volumes?
This only pertains to stationary track volumes and not pan etc.
    Many thanks
    Jonathan

No you can't save dynamic changes over time into a channelstrip. Channelstrip settings are static presets containing Plug In settings but not their automation over time.
You could export your automated volume as a Midi file and then drag it onto a copy of of your track so it will get affected by the Midi volume changes stored into that Midi file.
Open any automation event list with a keycommand - close your current Arrange page - open a new Arrange page - you will now see a page with all the automation regions containing the data for each track. Make a selection and use "export as Midi file" - reopen your normal Arrange page and import the Midi files you just created.
That's one way I can think of - not really an elegant way of doing this sort of thing though...
The other way would be to just copy the track's automation folder to a new track and adjust the Midi channel in the Midi event list if needed
    or
on Instrument tracks make a duplicate channel - copy the Midi region together with the automation and change the Instrument Plug In

  • Limit volume pedal range?

    Hopefully this is easy...
Basically, im using a Behringer FCB1010, which has 2 expression pedals.  When i put the volume pedal all the way to the floor, it makes the volume slider on the main channel strip go to +6.0db....which of course clips it and makes it sound really bad....is there a way to limit this to 0.0db globally?
    Thanks!

    Hi
In Layout mode, create a Screen controller pedal or fader, and MIDI Learn it to the FCB pedal.
In Edit mode, assign this screen control to whatever you need (at Concert, Set or Patch level as required), and then adjust the Range in the Screen Control Inspector.

  • Using Platinum Voicemaster Pro Vocal Channel Strip with Logic Pro & MBox 3

    Hiya,
I was wondering if you can help me please.
I have a small little home studio that I am currently building (just to record vocals mainly to instrumentals as I am singer/songwriter).
I am currently using Logic Pro 9 and MBOX Mini 3 as my midi interface but my producer who is based overseas told me to get a preamp. Many musicians have suggested I purchase Platinum Voicemaster Pro Vocal Channel Strip. CAN ANY CONFIRM WHETHER THIS WILL WORK WITH LOGIC PRO 9 AND GIVE ANY ADVICE AS TO HOW IS THE BEST WAY TO USE IT WITH LOGIC PRO 9 AND MY MBOX MINI 3?
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP.
    RUSHELLA
    X

Thank you both for your input. I am back on the case again, this time with a fully functioning FCB1010. Right ou of the box the pedal does successfully send volume and pan with expression pedal a and b respectively.
What I would next like to accomplish is to have exp. ped. b now control a plug-in parameter instead, the pedal range on the fuzz-wah plug-in of Logic Pro 7 for expample.
When I use Automation Quick Access to edit the assignment of ped. b as Bryan suggested, Logic appears to be receiving the info from ped. b and creating the new assignment (as indicated in the Controller Assignments window), and yet the actual functionality doesn't change, that is, ped. b continues to control pan.
    Any suggestions?

  • Lost channel strips

I'm using Logic Studio 8, mostly working with software instruments.  I just opened one of my project files, and it appears that many of my channel strips and software instrument settings have been lost.  A few of the channel strips, and a few of the software instrument settings are still correct, but most of them have switched to apparently random settings.  Any ideas about this?  Please help!

I'm using v. 2.2.2, but when I select the volume pedal at the concert level to call up the Screen Control Inspector, everything on the Attributes tab is grayed out, disabled.  I'm going to guess that is because the pedal is unmapped at that level.  When I go to the set level of an oft-used set and choose the pedal, the Attributes tabs items are not disabled, supposedly because I have the controller set for Block (because I use sliders to control volume here, not the pedal, and didn't want it messing things up).
In summary, it appears that in order to do what you have suggested and what lifenoise suggested -- "You can set the preferences at the concert level and override the parent mapping on a patch by patch basis" -- I have to, at the concert level, do something with a particular controller other than leave it unmapped.  Even if I have it set for Block at the concert level, a bit of playing with this just now shows that I can override the blocking at the set level.
Thanks fellows.  I suppose that wraps up this thread unless you have some additional feedback.

  • Automate Guitar Channel Strip Settings

Can anyone tell me if there is a way to automate a change is the Channel Strip setting during a performance. For instance, is there automate a change from:
    02 Electric Guitar/02 Complete Rigs/Rock/Bell-Bottomed Stack
    to say....
    02 Electric Guitar/03 Clean/03 Clean Delay/Clean Trashy Delay
at some point within the performance (and back again, etc).
This would sure beat stomping on pedals or trying to program automation of multiple amp settings and effects settings, etc. Thanks
    Paul

I don't know if there is but I do know there's a WAY to make it happen. One way around the sound change automation idea is to record your guitar performance then copy it on another track. Two tracks of the same performance, You after all have 255 tracks available so space isn't an issue. Assign one set of guitar settings to one track and a different set to the other then decide where in the song "track one" plays and where in the song "track two" plays. You can do this using a volume automation or even cutting parts you don't want to play. Done correctly it will sound like one track with a sound change at the correct times and one advantage of doing this is you can have both tracks play at the same time or even run them in stereo. (One in the left speaker and one in the right)
Again there MAY be a way to change the sound profile mid track but if there isn't the above idea will do the trick and give you some added sound options OVER changing the sound profile mid track.

  • Solo Button in Channel Strip with Red Line

Solo Button in Channel Strip with Red Line through it and it won't solo?
How'd it happen and how do you get rid of it?
    Thanks!

    Try This----From the Manual
Logic Pro, Express: Solo Safe mode may not remain disabled for a particular channel strip
    Symptoms
In certain projects, "Solo Safe" mode for a channel strip may enable each time you load the project, even after you disable it and save the project.
    Resolution
When a channel strip in Logic is "Solo Safe", it remains audible, even when other channel strips are soloed. Solo Safe is indicated by a diagonal red line through the solo button on a channel strip.
You can manually toggle the solo safe status of a channel strip by Control-clicking its solo button. There are times when you may find that a particular audio channel strip in a project reverts to solo safe mode when you load the project, even after you manually disable solo safe. Here is why that may happen and steps you can take to prevent it from occurring.
A Logic project contains a special audio channel strip used for pre-listening to audio in the Sample Edit window, Audio Bin, and Loop Browser. When you create a Logic project from one of the factory templates, this channel strip is assigned to "Audio 256". This channel strip stays in solo safe mode so that you can always preview audio. The image below shows the channel strip for a new, empty project.
If there is no audio channel strip in a project assigned to "Audio 256", Logic will use the highest-numbered available audio channel for pre-listening. When the project is loaded, that channel strip will be put into solo safe mode. You may find this happens in older projects that you open in Logic 8, or in cases where you have deleted the "Audio 256" channel strip in a Logic 8 project. To prevent this from affecting channel strips you are using in a project's arrangement, follow these steps:
    Choose Window > Environment.
From the Environment window menu, choose New > Channel Strip > Auxiliary. A channel strip will appear in the environment.
Select the channel strip. It will highlight.
In the Device parameter box in the upper left of the Environment window, click the arrows to the right of "Channel" and choose Audio > Audio 256 from the menu.
Select the text tool, click on the name below the channel strip and name it "Prelisten".

  • All of a sudden, I can no longer add any plugins to any channel strips? And when I click on an existing plugin to edit, it disappears off the channel strip?

I am running Logic express 9 on a 2008 Macbook, (non pro).  Anyhow, logic has always seemed to work great for me.  However, last week I opened up one of many existing projects, (I'm in sample editor).  When I went to add a new plugin to one of the channel strips it would not allow me to.  Also, if I click on any plugin that already exists on the channel strip it dissapears? The strange thing that also happens weather I click to add a new plugin or click on an already existing plugin, is both the  "repeat section" and "crop", buttons from the above menu (in sample editor), the actual buttons become a faded image,(as far as the actual font and images of the buttons).  As soon as I am done clicking to add a plugin on the channel strip, both buttons from the menu  go back to looking normal like all of the other choices from that menu?  I really don't get it?  All I want to do is to be able to add plugins as well as edit or change plugins again. Any thoughts as to why I can no longer add any new plugins to any channel strips?  And why any existing plugins disappear from the channel strip when I click on it?  Why the "repeat section", and "Crop", buttons from the menu above fade in and out when I try clicking on the channel strip is very strange? I don't mind that I just want to be able to add or edit plugins again.  I did do some document cleaning up last week as my memory was getting low.  I then emptied out my trash bin.  I'm hoping I didn't accidentally delete some kind of Logic component?  Why can't I add or edit plugins anymore?  Anyone ever run across this?
    Thanks,
    Mike.

    Mike,
Are any of your other applications going wonky, or is it just Logic?
I'm afraid I've never heard of this particular problem before, but if it were happening to me the first thing I would do is delete my "com.apple.logic.express.plist" file in Library>Preferences, then repair permissions in Disc Utility, and finally restart my computer.  Then I would launch Logic and see if the problem has been corrected.  It's amazing how much these two steps can accomplish.
If that doesn't resolve the issue I would launch Logic and go to Preferences>Audio Units Manager to see if all my plug-ins are properly validated.

  • Changing FX plug in settings for channel strip aliases?

I've been trying to migrate my live performance rig from Kore 2 to Mainstage 3, and truth be told it has not been easy, nor yet successful.  Every time I overcome one roadblock to something that was so easy to set in Kore, another problem presents itself.  Thanks to much help from the users in this group, I got a handle on getting through the biggest obstacle of Mainstage ignoring PG changes to channel strips by using Multitimbral settings.
Here's the next huge stumbling block.  In Kore, I was able to set up any instance (roughly the equivalent of a Mainstage channel strip) with a series of insert effects plug ins, i.e. a piano patch with both parametric and graphic EQ, compression, etc. and was able to choose which effect(s) would be in use or defeated for a given performance preset and change the settings of any of the plug ins and be able to save them on a per preset basis.
While the capacity to load several insert FX exists in Mainstage, it appears that any changes to an effect are global across the aliases.  While I understand that only voume, pan and expression can have separate settings on an alias, I'm searching for some kind of workaround to this issue.  All I came up with was using separate busses for each FX chain each having their own settings, but that seems like a horribly inefficient use of resources.  Has anyone else found a solution to this problem?

That is not possible, because an alias is simple the _identical_ channel strip in different patches. Any change will be reflected on all occurences of the alias.

  • Axiom 25 percussion pads -- MIDI routing to different channel strips?

Hi all, and sorry for the noobie question! This is a very helpful forum.
I found a thread back in November that asked a similar question, but the thread is archived and I couldn't reply.
I've got an Axiom 25 MIDI controller going into Mainstage 2 via USB. This keyboard has eight percussion pads. I've got those pads transmitting on MIDI channel 10, and the keyboard transmitting on channel 1 (verified by the midi monitor at the top of the Mainstage edit screen).
I would like to get percussion sounds from the pads and keyboard sounds from the keys. I've set things up in Layout so that there are separate keyboard and percussion pads, and I've gone through the "learn" process and specified channel 10 for the percussion pads, etc. None of this seems to matter as far as what sound is produced, at least not yet.
The question I have is whether using my single MIDI controller, I am limited to using one playback instrument at a time and using multitimbral input to it, or if there is an easy way to "route" to multiple channel strips containing distinct instruments based on the midi transmission channel from the Axiom (i.e. channel 10 for the percussion pads, 1 for the keys).
I did RTFM without luck. I hope I've expressed the question using clear & proper terms -- I'm new to this so please be patient with me, and thanks in advance for your reply.
    -Rob

It seems to me like this should be easily accomplished. My suggestion is to use the MIDI Activity Indicator (looks like a little round light), since you're on MS2. Here are the steps that I'd follow, although I don't have my rig in front of me so it's all by memory:
    - In Layout mode, create two MIDI Activity Indicators: one that is assigned to Channel 1, and one that is assigned to Channel 10. I would name them "Channel 1" and "Channel 10" so that they're easily identifiable in Edit mode.
    - In Edit mode, create a patch with two channel strips: one for your drum sounds and one for your keyboard sound.
    - Assign the Channel 1 indicator to your keyboard sound channel strip, and assign the Channel 10 indicator to your drum sound channel strip.
    Give that a try!

  • Copy Channel strips between songs

Hi I am working on a mix but its spread over two songs, I want to copy the drums and bass channel strips plugins etc from one song to another. I know if I go to audio config I can copy paste the hole song settings but I only want the first 16 tracks with plugins and fader levels. I tried a simple copy paste on the channels from the enviroment but it didn't seem to work.......

Unfortunately, you have discovered a missing feature that Logic desperately needs, if it is to continue using the word "Pro" in it's title.
As you know, you can copy from the audio configuration window, but that will replace all other track assignments, plug-ins etc... not the intended result.
You can place those 16 tracks on their own environment layer, and import that layer into the second song, but that will only copy volume and panning assignments, not plug-ins, or output assignments.
It's my opinion, that in this particular situation, this is probably the best approach:
Save channel strip settings for the first 16 tracks. Open the second song, and load each tracks channel strip. It's not hard to do... just requires a lot of mouse clicks...
As for volume and pan settings, my advice would be to open both songs at the same time. arrange the first 16 tracks of song 1's mixer at the top of your screen, and the first 16 tracks of song 2 at the bottom of your screen.
Simply set all the volumes and pans on song two manually, by looking at what's in song 1.
One trick I would suggest: Before trying to open both songs at once, disable the audio driver from the Audio Hardware & Drivers window. This will save many minutes of the spinning beachball, while Logic tries to load all plug-ins, AI's, etc, from the second song. Since you're only opening them for a visual cue, you won't need the audio driver active for this task. Trust me, doing this will make it go very fast, and save you lots of aggravation, while switching between songs, and resizing the mixer windows to see what's going on.
Don't forget to turn the audio driver back on, when you're ready to actually hear anything.
The good news is, you'll probably have all 16 tracks set-up properly, faster than the time it took me to type all of this!
    Hope that helps...

  • Reorder channel strips?

Is there a way to reorder the channel strips in MainStage? I can't find any way possible so far, and every time I make a new strip, it lands in the #2 spot, messing up my order. I know I"m being picky, but I like certain instruments to be on certain volume sliders on my Axiom and it's a pain to keep changing them.

I also haven't found a way to re-order, but have found that by exporting the patch and then re-importing it I can have enough consistency to make life a little easier. Hopefully there'll be a nice control-drag sort of operation in a future version.
