EXS 24 instrument organisation

I've just started working with samples using the EXS 24 and have created a couple of instruments. I'm wondering where the best place to store my samples.
Logic creates the instrument in its own folder but doesn't copy the samples. I experienced a problem when I moved the samples from the desktop to another folder thinking Logic would search for them, or at least give me the option, but I ended up having to re-create the instrument.
I know Logic stores its own instruments in its factory samples folder, but I don't want to do this just yet because I'm confused by the fact that:
* Logic appears to have two folders, one stored in Macintosh HD, and one in my user folder structure.
* My new instrument appears in my user folder, but not in the main folder where Logic's own instruments are stored.
* My user folder does not appear to contain a default samples folder I can use.
Are my user folders real folders or in fact aliases?
Anyway, I've only just started creating instruments and any ideas how best to keep them organised would be appreciated. I don't want to do anything just yet in case I mess with what I've already done.

Hi I tend to do a lot of work for Film & TV as well as general Music Production work, so for that I require 'Sample Sets' which simply put are, a set of samples grouped in a folder for a certain use. I.e. Foley effects which would have everyday run of the mill stuff like diffrent versions of keys turning in a lock, footseps in various places, croweds in diffrent locations, people talking laughing etc.
*How do I set about achieving this*
What I do is in my user folder where the sample instruments are made I have a nested group of folders in which I group my samples accourdingly so for example the top layer folders would maybe Effects/ Music Genra/ instruments/
Within the Effects folder I would creat may be the following folders General Foley effects, Horror, Action,Special BIG Budget Movie effects
Within the Music Genra folder I would creat diffrent folders for the diffrent types of music I am creating i.e soul, Hip Hop, Pop, Classical/Big Band World Music etc. In the these folders I would collect all the sounds I would need to create these tracks from the bases to the strings to the guitars. (This requires you becoming familiour with the type of sounds and instruments used for the diffrent genras.
In the insrument folder I would create sub folders that would house diffrent instrument families such as Perc kits Aucustic Drum kits Strings Synths Difrrent Pianos etc.
This way I can come to this folder when I want to go in a totally diffrent direction from the other genra led folders.
*Dealing with the Factory Samples which come with Logic*
Now what do I do with the factory samples which load with logic? Well I have an external drive with all the raw sound files on which roughly mirror the folder hierachy that I would have created in my user folder within Logic. I then place the factory samples into a folder withthe same name on this sample drive. The EXS 24 sample instruments I will place on the user directory within logic.
*Why do it this way?*
I do it this way a) because its simpler all my sample instruments are in one directory. b) when you are creating your own samples, by the very nature of how logics folder structure is set up, Logic will defaults to saving any new or edited samples to the user folder, and in so doing seeks to protect the files placed in the EXS folder on the system Library side of things. This is why all source files such as your *Ultrabeat/Space designer type files* will be found here and any edited editions you make of these files within logic will appear over in the user side of things, which shows up in the edited instrument (EXS 24/Ultrabeat/Space designer) as a sub menu.
Once you have been able to get your head around how Logice utalizes its filing structure then you can manipulate it to your own needs. By doing so you get to save precious space on your system drive.
*Important Note*
I have found it best to keep the 'Dual folder directories' intact on the system drive. What do I mean by 'Dual folder directories'? These are the folders which are created in the garageband directory which then appear in logic so that you can import garageband projects into Logic and thus carry on building and tweaking to your hearts content.
If you move these folders to another location and even if you create an alias in their place this, in my experience, can cause a whole host of problems, so when loading logic for the first time on your system leave these file in the location of where logic natrully places them on the system drive within the logic folder and the garageband folder.
*A word of warning to the Wise*
A word of warning building a sample library is easy. Building one which is going to be an effective tool and does not get in the way of the creative flow takes lots of time, planning and paitience. However after the blood sweat and tears, it will be worth it and you will be glade you did it in years to come.
Back Up! Back Up! Back Up!
One last thing back your sample drive up so that you do not loose all those samples you took time to import and carfully group. Also back up your sample insrtuments on your user directory again for the same reason.
Good effective sample libraries can be as simple or as complex as you want and can take a good couple of years to perfect. Good Luck and happy sampling.

  • EXS' Sampler Instrument Count Limitation

    Hello everyone,
Does anyone happen to know of a workaround/ solution to EXS' sampler instrument count limitation? I find myself constantly shuffling instruments and libraries in and out of the Sampler Instruments folder, a process which, given my 1TB library, is tedious and extremely time consuming.
Any "magic fixes" or insights would be highly appreciated..
    Thanks!

    Some clarifications:
I have been running EXS Manager, Pro Ed from the get-go.
Once again, my complaint is NOT regarding slow load times (which, believe me, is grounds for a whole separate post); rather the inability to access instruments altogether. In other words: past a certain, specific instrument down the list, others would simply no longer load. They are visible in the EXS menu, but are flat out "ignored" by the sampler.
Additionally, I have tried re arranging them using sub-folders, but to no avail: The Sampler Instruments folder seems to only be able to handle so many instruments.
    Anyone else..?

  • Re-Linking EXS Sampler Instruments & Samples

1 - Curious what you think of this concept:
I have an external drive that I'd like to be able to move to several computers and use as my samples drive. To keep things consistent, I thought it best to keep BOTH EXS Sampler Instruments & Samples on this drive. Then I can just create aliases of the EXS Sampler Instruments and drop them in the main logic support folder. That way I can easily just move the drive to either computer for the greatest flexibility.
Is this ok to do? Is there a better way?
2 - I'd like to re-link many EXS Sampler Instruments to their samples. I used to use the ExsManager Pro.app but that stopped working a while back. Is there another way to have logic do all the re-linking instead?

    Yes, you can do this.

  • EXS 24 instrument ''steinway Piano.exs '' Audio file '' stw per v1 024.AIF '' not found)....

    The Issue :
The steinway piano. exs can be seen in 'Library/ Application Support/ Logic / sampler instruments / Acoustic pianos - when double click on it ''Can't be open''
    c
    Same in Garageband & MainStage
When launching Logic pro , Garageband or MainStage : EXS 24 instrument ''steinway Piano.exs '' Audio file '' stw per v1 024.AIF '' not found)..
After having spoken on phone to a technician (Apple support ) ,i followed his instructions which was to ''  Download Additional Contents via the Logic Pro menu:'' ( I've Downloaded twice already) but the issue was unresolved  ( '' EXS 24 instrument ''steinway Piano.exs '' Audio file '' stw per v1 024.AIF '' not found)..
Then last night i tried :  Via the LOGIC PRO MENU : Click on '' Download Additional Content  then select ''Logic Pro & Mainstage Essential Contents'' click install .
It took about 2 hours and finally afterwards  when loading song in logic pro ; steinway piano was still there but this time it worked  same for Garageband & MainStage.

"Additional Contents" I don't even know what that is? What app is it for?

  • Layering two EXS 24 instruments? (And using plug-in settings as 'waveforms)

i'm beginning to think redmatica keymap is my only hope 'coz i keep running into issues with exs24, it just does not seem to do what i want
i'm told on page 393 of the logic 8 manual that plug-in settings can be used as templates to load sampler instruments into, like 'waveforms', no such luck here, am i missing a trick?
also, is there not a simple way of creating a layer of two seperate instruments on exs, i can't work this one out either (doh)
thankz in advance for any enlightenment

    1. Open the Environment Window (Mixer layer) and create a new Standard Instrument from the "New" menu above.
    2. Select this Instrument object and set its port to "No Port" in the Inspector.
    3. Cable the Instrument object to both Software Instruments you want to layer ( patch a separate cable to each instance ).
    4. Create an Arrange track for the new Instrument object, select it and record/play.

  • Random grumblings about EXS-24 instrument editor

I made a very complex sampled instrument for EXS-24 last week, with release samples, three layers of velocity...Lotsa samples.
They sure are hard to manage in the instrument editor, when you have a lot of samples.
Setting all those zone parameters and all.
It made me wish for something like Apple Loops utility where I could tag the samples with metadata and when I import the samples into the instrument they all map out correctly.
There is an option when you import the samples to have them map out to a pitch if you name the files with a note name.
Makes me wish for more, I would like to specify a lot of info about the sample.
Pitch range, velocity range, part of a group, non transpose,
Things that are currently in the Zone parameters I would like to specify ahead of time.
It would be nice to select a group of samples and tag them all at once.
Much like you would tag songs in iTunes.
I guess I needed to vent cause it took Soooooo long to do.
I had to go in and adjust the zone parameters one at a time and it was very time consuming.
    It's time for EXS-24 MK3
Oh, and have it ready by the Namm show for me will ya?

I agreeeee, it's time to EXS-orize this plug!
Apologies in advance if what I'm about to write is preaching to the choir... Some EXS make-your-life-easier tips...
    1. When creating a complex instrument of, say, multiple velocity layers, create separate EXS instruments for each layer. Then when it comes time to combine them into a single instrument, copy and paste the zones/groups into a single master instrument.
    2. Applicable to the tip above, but using a different example... If you were to create a split instrument of, say, bass and piano, into a single EXS instrument, and the ranges of the two sounds didn't overlap, the EXS display would show a single line of contiguous zones. Visually there would be no way to tell where the bass ends and where the piano starts, making programming difficult. But you can force each sound's zones to occupy its own row in the zones display by adding dummy zones below the first zone and above the last zone in each sound. Then, when you combine these to form your split instrument, each sound will occupy a separate row in the display.
To ensure that these zones don't get erased in the event you use the delete unused zones function, program them with an audio file that's nothing but a short piece of silence.
    3. All zones and groups can be re-named. Dbl-click on the name shown and a text field will open so that you can change it.
    4. There's a function called something to the effect of "move last played zone to top" which, along with the other function that reveals the last zone(s) played, makes it tons easier to access the zones you're tweaking.
    HTH.

i don't remember if this function is still in logic but it would scan all my ext hardrives for samples for sampler instruments so it would then be able to find them faster. right now its showing i have multiple samples of certan instruments and want to get that a little more roganized
    thanks

Completely unrelated question, but I had found a previous thread where you had converted an older Logic file for the Yamaha S90 synthesizer into a newer file that would work in Logic 8 but the link to that file is now broken. Any chance you could reconvert and repost?
The original file link (in the older Logic format) is at http://files.keyfax.com/download/S90Object.LSO

  • Slow load on EXS Orchestral Instruments

It seems to be random, but most of the voice (choir) instruments take 3-5 minutes to load and some of the organ instruments are doing the same thing.
    The rest load lickety split.
I've done a fresh install of osx, logic, tried to install jam packs again, repaired permissions twice, removed .pref files twice.
They all load just fine on my 2007 mbp and 2009 mac pro, but my brand, spanking new imac i7 has problems.
Can anyone PLEASE help me. I am about to throw my iMac into the toilet. An unflushed toilet.

    Nobody eh?

  • Sampler Instruments Folder in Root or User to put additional exs files

is it best to keep all sampler instruments in Root folder? i notice thats where it installs the origional ex samples and instruments. but i have converted giga and akai as well as other exs sample instruments i made. is it ok to put them all in the root or are they supposed to go in User/ sampler instruments or does it matter?
    thanks

You can put them anywhere, as long as there are *identically named aliases* of the containing folders in either the root or the Users folder.
Logic puts 'Convertees' by default in the Users folder, I believe.
Whether it is best I cannot tell you, that depends on your use. If you use lots of EXS instruments in a project it may be advantageous to have all sound content on a a dedicated disk, to avoid too much traffic to and from the Startup volume, possibly leading to Logic reacting sluggishly.
    regards, Erik.

Do you still have Logic 8 or 7? They still have the wonderful amazing Project Manager, which will search your hard drives for the audio data and EXS sampler instruments, and reconnect them to the song session file automatically.
And : Now you know that you have to start keeping all project data in the song folder, since they got RID OF the project manager.
There is a checkbox option for this.

  • Adding a Soundfont to my Logic Studio instruments folder.

    Hello,
I've just tried to add a purchased Soundfont instrument (Celtic Winds Tin Whistle) to Logic Studio.  Instructions indicate that i need to add it to the sampler instruments folder (done) and then  "chose the Soundfont2 file in the EXS24 mk11 Sampler Instruments pop-up menu.  The EXS24 automatically converts the chosen file into an EXS sampler instrument."
Where do I find this EXS24 pop-up menu?  I can't find in any of the documentation how you bring this sampler up to get at the pop-up menu.  Or is there another way I should be doing this?
And-Does the Soundfont instrument I purchased work in Logic or must it be Soundfont2?
Thank you very much for your assistance.

You should copy the file here:
    /Library/Application Support/Logic/Sampler Instruments
    Then open exs24 and click on the instruments popup menu (green text on black surface, between "unison" and "edit|options" buttons);
    If you had it already open choose "refresh menu" from the aforementioned popup menu;
Now you should see the font and be able to select it. when you select it EXS24 will create a folder within that menu with all the patches contained inside the soundfont. They'll be already converted and selectable in the right format.
Not sure about soundfont 1 or 2. I think i always found version2 around.
Remember also you have a builtin plugin to manage with soundfonts called DSLMusicDevice.
You can pick it in the instruments popup menu under "Au Instruments" > "Apple".
In order for this plugin to see soundfonts you need to place them in /Library/Audio/Sounds/Banks folder.
It's very basic but sometimes does a better job with some loops not usually well done.
    regards.

  • How do you merge EXS24 instruments?!?

I have drums in one instrument, and cymbals in another. (mapped not to overlap)
In the AKAI, I just assigned them to the same MIDI channel.
How do you merge instruments in the EXS24?
Thanks and sorry if this seems basic (I did do a search first!)
      Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I have drums in one instrument, and cymbals in
    another. (mapped not to overlap)
In the AKAI, I just assigned them to the same MIDI
    channel.
How do you merge instruments in the EXS24?
    This should work:
    - Open an environment window
    - Make sure "Protect Size & Positions" is NOT checked
    - (Also: simpler if "Show Cables" is off.)
    - Now, "Create New Instrument". The new object should have a little arrow on the top right hand side of its icon...
    - If you hold down the 'alt' (or 'option') key and then click and hold the mouse button over this little arrow, you should get a scrolling vertical list of possible cable destinations. Select the first EXS (ie "Instrument 4") in the list.
    - You should now see a cable heading off from the newly-created instrument, and a second little arrow beneath the one you just connected. Alt-click on this one and select the second EXS.
    - Now, if you select this new instrument in the Arrange, your MIDI input should be routed to both of the EXS instruments.
    I hope this helps.....
