Exs sampler + new instrument + assoc samples

bought a cd-rom with 3 unix exec files, each said to contain exs "patches"
to go w/ that, cd-rom also has the assoc .wav files
i am copying unix files to: hd/library/app supp/logic/sampler instr/
but i get a warning saying "can't modify sampler instr folder"
q1: where else do i copy? into folder bearing same name in my "home" root folder? if so, where do the .wav files go?
q2: unix files don't have the .exs extension; do i type one myself or will exs sampler read just as well?
iMac G5 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   Logic Pro (7.1.1) MOTU 828mkII

solved. thanks jizzer and tbird.
i needed to add .exs extension to unix files, then copy to user/home/library/app supp/logic/sampler instr/ folder
the .wav files were copied to user/home/library/app supp/logic/audio files folder
works like a charm
p.s.
i got the cd from Sample Magic. it's called Transmission-X
very cool. i recommend if you do soundtrack-ish pieces

  • EXS sampler crashing on "new instrument"

Every time I try to create a custom instrument using the EXS sampler, I follow the steps in this tutorial:
    http://audio.tutsplus.com/tutorials/production/how-to-create-a-custom-instrument -with-logics-exs-sampler/
But when I get to Instrument > New, I get the dreaded rainbow pinwheel, Logic 8 becomes unresponsive and I have to Force Quit.
Any ideas what might be causing this?

  • EXS24 puts .exs after some instruments, refusing to load the samples?

With Logic 7.2.1, I'm using some SampleCell instruments that were originally imported into Logic 4.8 EXS24. Then, I moved that fully working EXS24 folder over to my new Mac.
Many of them play perfectly, and I can watch as the samples quickly load into the EXS24.
However, when I access some instruments from the menu, I get no error msg, but no samples are loaded - and ".exs" is appended after the instrument's name in the menu.
I'd think if it couldn't find the samples, it would ask me where to find them?
    How can I resolve this?

ESX has Factory samples on your hard drive
and then the new instruments you create yourself.
If you truly have a User Instrument in ESX it should be under Edit(just to the right of the Instrument pane on ESX)/Instrument/Open.
If it is not there you might be screwed.
The only sure fix is create a new instrument (same Edit window) New/ Zone/ Import Multiple Samples/(Browse for the files) Add All/ Add/ will import the Samples into a new instrument then Instrument/ Save As...

  • Why can't EXS find my instruments and samples?

Why can't EXS find my Instruments and Samples?
    LPX 10.0.7
I have had issues with this problem before, and have spent a few hours looking throughout the many related threads on this forum and on Logic Pro Help without finding a workable solution.  So I will jump in again and hope for someone to shed some light on this.
Here is the scenario- I have two rigs, one in my studio and another on my laptop (2.5 gh Intel core 2 Duo with 4GB RAM). I have a duplicate of my sample library on a portable drive, which I take with me when I'm using my laptop. I recently copied a Project I'm working on from the portable drive to my main system. When I open the project, I get a message telling me that certain (not all) EXS files are not found.
    Some further pertinent info:
I have not saved the EXS files with the project- the project uses a sizable template and that would be cumbersome.
All of the EXS instruments/samples in the Project are there on both my internal sample drive and the portable drive.
The aliases linking my Application support Logic folder and the sample drive are correct and in place.
This happens whether I have the portable drive mounted on my main rig or not. And whether I open the Project from the portable drive or from the copy on the internal drive.
I have reindexed the internal sample drive with Spotlight. Didn't help.
I have refreshed the Instrument menu from within EXS. Didn't seem to do anything.
    Anyone?

Hi Sig! Thank you very much for your reply. But my version is iLife 11, and it should have an iWeb and iDVD

  • EXS' Sampler Instrument Count Limitation

    Hello everyone,
Does anyone happen to know of a workaround/ solution to EXS' sampler instrument count limitation? I find myself constantly shuffling instruments and libraries in and out of the Sampler Instruments folder, a process which, given my 1TB library, is tedious and extremely time consuming.
Any "magic fixes" or insights would be highly appreciated..
    Thanks!

    Some clarifications:
I have been running EXS Manager, Pro Ed from the get-go.
Once again, my complaint is NOT regarding slow load times (which, believe me, is grounds for a whole separate post); rather the inability to access instruments altogether. In other words: past a certain, specific instrument down the list, others would simply no longer load. They are visible in the EXS menu, but are flat out "ignored" by the sampler.
Additionally, I have tried re arranging them using sub-folders, but to no avail: The Sampler Instruments folder seems to only be able to handle so many instruments.
    Anyone else..?

  • Re-Linking EXS Sampler Instruments & Samples

1 - Curious what you think of this concept:
I have an external drive that I'd like to be able to move to several computers and use as my samples drive. To keep things consistent, I thought it best to keep BOTH EXS Sampler Instruments & Samples on this drive. Then I can just create aliases of the EXS Sampler Instruments and drop them in the main logic support folder. That way I can easily just move the drive to either computer for the greatest flexibility.
Is this ok to do? Is there a better way?
2 - I'd like to re-link many EXS Sampler Instruments to their samples. I used to use the ExsManager Pro.app but that stopped working a while back. Is there another way to have logic do all the re-linking instead?

  • Migrating EXS Samples. Logic 6.4 - 8

    Hello.
I'm transferring my work from and old g4 powerbook to a new intel Macbook Pro.
I have a lot of unfinished projects on the Powerbook. What is the procedure for transferring my EXS library across?
If I copy the Sampler Instruments folder over, and the samples themselves, will Logic 8 find them? In fact I have no idea where Logic 8 stores samples for the EXS?
Just wondering if there is anything I need to know/watch out for...
    thanks

Turns out I spoke too soon.
The EXS sampler cannot load the samples I have moved over. It says they are 'not found'. For example I have a drum breaks exs instrument that contains maybe 80 drum loops. When the sampler opens it says it can't find the files, but the name of them seems to have been changed. Random letters and numbers have been added. For example there is a drum break entitled
    AfricanMusic_Machine_-Tropical.wav
But Logic says it can't find AfricanMusicMachineAEE36.wav
When I check the sample's name outside of logic it looks ok again.
Some of the samples load. But very few. If I go to the instrument editor the samples' names are present but they have an explanation mark next to them.
If I click on the exclamation mark and choose 'Open Audio File', I choose the correct file from my sample library but Logic says 'File name too long'.
Any help here would be much appreciated. Is there something I'm missing?
My move from a pb 1.5 to a MBP 2.4 has been totally plagued with problems (not just in Logic) and I'm beginning to wish I'd stayed with a G4 setup. The Trilogy and Atmosphere wrappers are pathetic (I am using them extensively in many an unfinished project)and I can't get Stylus to transfer over in my tracks either. The tracks are bare skeleton versions of what they were, nothing seems to be loading right.
    It's all very frustrating.

  • Moving EXS samples to separate drive

I purchased a firewire drive on which to store my EXS samples. I copied two folders to the new drive: EXS Factory Samples and Sampler Instruments. I then made aliases of these two folders and dropped them into the original folders on my MacBook's hard drive. So now when I attempt to choose a sample in the EXS, I see the alias and can choose a sound from it. Okee dokee. Works fine.
However, I didn't trash the original files from the computer's hard drive after I copied them to the new drive. Actually, I tried but was asked to "Authenticate" this decision. I assume that typing my password will allow me to trash the files, but I thought better of it and decided to ask here first. Is there a problem with trashing these files?
    Thanks

    hi,
after checking all files have been moved properly, yes you can delete the originals.
the reason you need to sign of on them is they are in the administrator domain, not the user.

  • Slightly OT - installing new instruments on NI Kontakt (v. EXS 24!)

    Hi
I am painfully trying to get my head around NI Kontakt. Now, I have some freeby and some paid for new instruments (+ associated samples) - how do I get them into Kontakt? (it was easy on EXS24, just drag the .exs files into the relevant folder, put the samples anywhere and off you go).
Also, on a related note, how can I reorganise the instruments to my liking (i.e. not use the various categories etc. that NI defaults to)? Again with EXS24 it is easy - just rearrange the files in Finder as much as you like.
    thanks all
    N

Thanks for the swift response - a few follow up questions if I may (sorry to come across as such a newbie but I am finding the NI stuff very user-unfriendly after the various Logic soft synths):
You should first build your Database in Kontakt's standalone mode
i.e. not as a plug-in? I'll do what you suggest but intrigued as to the difference!
All the Kontakt patches live where you initally installed them when installing Kontakt and it's Library, there is no "default"-location for that.
Ah OK - I just went along with whatever the installer did...but if I want to change them around now? Can I do that?
    Thanks

  • Exs sampler need looped sample to play forever

I have made an exs instrument of 2 separate  1 measure arpeggiated keyboard lines that I have set to loop in EXS sampler on MS2.
I have the EXS set to Mono, and to Unison so that one looped sample will cancel out the other one,  I have now assigned 2 drum triggers on my midi drum kit
to each be the note that each of the 2 samples are assigned to. I have the release, sustain, decay cranked all the way on the EXS sampler, however, my samples still slowly die out.  Is there a way for me to make them play forever until I play the other sample or hit panic button?
as long as I hold the note it will play forever, however I want to be able to hit a trigger that's assigned to that note, and have it simply loop forever

    ù
Is loop in EXS24 editor flagged?  I think here around is your solution
    • Loop On checkbox: Activate to enable looping and to allow access to the other Loop parameters.
    • Loop Start, Loop End fields: Define discrete loop start and end points, allowing you to loop a portion of the audio file.
    • Control-clickeitherfieldtoopenashortcutmenuthatallowsaccesstotheLogicPro Sample Editor (or an external editor). This enables you to set the loop start and end points graphically: Loop Start is represented by the LS marker and Loop End by the LE marker. See Editing Samples in the EXS24 mkII Sample Editor.

  • EXS Sampler getting samples in?

Ive been chopping live drum audio files saving to desk top then into ESX.
    Is there a better way?

  • Missing EXS samples despite full install

I appear to be missing a few EXS samples for instrument channel strip settings such as all the Bosendorfer variations (Club, Hall, Room and Studio) and some of the Pop Strings amongst others. Most of the others are there but if I happen to click on a setting with missing samples Logic freezes for 20 or 30 seconds before warning me of the missing samples.
I have tried doing a complete reinstallation a few times but the samples are still not being installed. OSX won't let me install directly from the samples installer package within the Logic installer. Any idea why these are not being installed? I am selecting every single option in the Logic installer so it's not that.
    Thanks
    David

    dmacintyre wrote:
They are in teh same channel strip folder as the Steinway and Yamaha settings. It's definitely Logic which is installing them as they reappear after deletion and reinstallation of the Logic content.
It could also be that you did not actually delete them before reinstall... ?
It couldn't be Garageband content could it? I am selecting the option to install Garageband content too but I wonder if it is part of the Garageband content which doesn't appear in the Logic installation files.
Garageband doesn't use channel strips. If they were just EXS instruments, it could be.
Also, after you reinstall, OS X needs some time to index all files. If you open *Activity Monitor*, order the processes by CPU use, and look if a background app called mdworker is active. Let it finish (= 0% activity) before you open Logic.

  • Logic hangs when loading EXS samples on a session that worked yesterday?

I'm using Logic 8.0.2, I try to open session I was working on yesterday and it now won't open? it seems to not be able to find the EXS samples, as it hangs on the grey bars that show Logic trying to find the relevent samples. it takes forever to look and then eventually slips into 'logic not responding' when I look at the pre-force quit window.
This bug is making my life **** at the moment as I have very tight deadlines on picture work, it seems Logic 9 doesn't fix this as others have reported it so I don't want to use that until it's working without any bugs [ LOL! ]. I have 9 installed on a seperate drive when it's worthy of being used.
Been having this problem for at least 8 months now, I've tried 100's of times running disk utility, and preferential treatment I did try about 3 months ago running a spotlight utility but it didn't make any difference.
I have millions of samples spread on multiple drives, this has worked for me for years and years and only now has started to be a problem so 'moving your exs samples to a default area' is no use to me there must be another solution.
    my system:
    Logic Pro 8.0.2
    OSX 10.5.8 [ 2x3.2 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon ]
    8GB memory
    Powercore 3.2.0.38 [ for a powercore firewire ]
    EuControl 2.0.3.63120 [ for a MC Mix ]
    Motu PCI audio driver 1.31 [ for 24i/o, 2408, HD192 ]
    hope someone can help.
I know there're other threads about this [ and it doesn't seem to be being fixed ], apple needs to realise the urgency of this problem.

I have 5 drives totalling about 2 TB of stuff which are my working non-application drives, when rebuilding spotlight index in Onyx the rebuilding takes about 5 seconds so I'm not sure that's actually doing anything at all?
this doesn't happen on every session I can normally re-open something but if it refuses to open I have to run disk utility and preferential treatment, restart and try again. this doesn't always work straight away, it can take like 3 x repeats of this / restarts until the session opens again which obviously is hugely disruptive with deadlines.
I heard that opening a session from 'within' Logic works better and I've been doing this but although it seems a little more reliable I'm still at the same point now where on average 1 in 4 sessions won't open and I have to go through the boring routine of disk utility, etc.

  • EXS samples in a partition disk

about puting the EXS samples in a partition disk instead of the system disk?, does it work better?, doesnt matter?

If you mean partitioning your main internal drive, and using that partition for your samples .... then, no, I wouldn't bother.
However, adding separate hard drive (SATA/FireWire 7200, etc) wouldn't hurt, and your samples may load faster, depending on your current configuration.

  • Where is the best place for EXS samples?

I finally upgraded from my G4 which had space issues. Now I'm wondering: Should EXS samples be on the boot drive or the media drive? How about Reason refill, RMX samples etc.?
    Thanks in advance!

We know that the iPad only connects using wireless but don't know whether you plan to connect the iMac and/or the MacBook Pro using wireless as well.
If yes, the ideal spot for the Time Capsule would be a central location so that wireless devices would all be about the same distance from the Time Capsule.
Think of a wheel with a hub and spokes.  The Time Capsule would be the "hub". Each wireless device would be located at end of a separate "spoke".
If that won't work, Apple does offer devcices like the AirPort Express and AirPort Extreme that can "extend" the wireless signal for greater coverage.
