EXS samples loading twice

After upgrading from Logic 6 to 7 I get the following strange behaviour:
When I start up Logic by double-clicking a song file that contains EXS24 instruments, the samples are loaded twice (according to the Progress window).
Anybody else have experienced this? Or any ideas what may be wrong with my setup?
PowerMac G4/1.2GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Thanks stash, but that wouldn't explain the behaviour, because
1) I'm using only new samples from Logic 7, like eg. Yamaha Grand Piano
2) The double loading does NOT occur if I open the song when Logic is already booted
Perhaps somebody can do a little test to confirm/disprove this issue:
- Create a song with just one EXS instrument, load the Yamaha Grand Piano
- Save the song and quit Logic
- Double-click the song file in the finder
- Watch the loading in Progress window, does it appear only once or twice?
Thanks in advance.

  • Command-period to cancel EXS sample loading: Does this work for anyone?

    Hello everyone,
When loading a sample instrument into the EXS, watching with glee as that wonderful progress bar slowly fills up; underneath there is this note: Press "command-period" to cancel. No matter what I do nor how hard I try, I cannot get this key command to work. When I first noticed this problem long ago, I searched both manuals and found nothing, and with a great sadness in my heart, I defined it as a "no longer supported feature" in logic and moved on.
Today, after experiencing the relentless loading of unnecessary samples (see my other post) my thoughts wandered yet again to how wonderful life would be if this feature actually worked!
So I'm asking, has ANYONE been able to get this to work? If not, anyone know of a work around to cancel the loading of samples?
I anxiously await your replies, and thank you for your help.

    Jonathan,
It's never worked for me either. Sorry I don't have a work around (other than unplugging the computer), but did want to confirm that indeed it doesn't work.
It does work for the bounce progress bar though.... Not that that helps, but is worth mentioning.

  • Logic hangs when loading EXS samples on a session that worked yesterday?

I'm using Logic 8.0.2, I try to open session I was working on yesterday and it now won't open? it seems to not be able to find the EXS samples, as it hangs on the grey bars that show Logic trying to find the relevent samples. it takes forever to look and then eventually slips into 'logic not responding' when I look at the pre-force quit window.
This bug is making my life **** at the moment as I have very tight deadlines on picture work, it seems Logic 9 doesn't fix this as others have reported it so I don't want to use that until it's working without any bugs [ LOL! ]. I have 9 installed on a seperate drive when it's worthy of being used.
Been having this problem for at least 8 months now, I've tried 100's of times running disk utility, and preferential treatment I did try about 3 months ago running a spotlight utility but it didn't make any difference.
I have millions of samples spread on multiple drives, this has worked for me for years and years and only now has started to be a problem so 'moving your exs samples to a default area' is no use to me there must be another solution.
    my system:
    Logic Pro 8.0.2
    OSX 10.5.8 [ 2x3.2 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon ]
    8GB memory
    Powercore 3.2.0.38 [ for a powercore firewire ]
    EuControl 2.0.3.63120 [ for a MC Mix ]
    Motu PCI audio driver 1.31 [ for 24i/o, 2408, HD192 ]
    hope someone can help.
I know there're other threads about this [ and it doesn't seem to be being fixed ], apple needs to realise the urgency of this problem.

I have 5 drives totalling about 2 TB of stuff which are my working non-application drives, when rebuilding spotlight index in Onyx the rebuilding takes about 5 seconds so I'm not sure that's actually doing anything at all?
this doesn't happen on every session I can normally re-open something but if it refuses to open I have to run disk utility and preferential treatment, restart and try again. this doesn't always work straight away, it can take like 3 x repeats of this / restarts until the session opens again which obviously is hugely disruptive with deadlines.
I heard that opening a session from 'within' Logic works better and I've been doing this but although it seems a little more reliable I'm still at the same point now where on average 1 in 4 sessions won't open and I have to go through the boring routine of disk utility, etc.

  • EXS Sampler Problems any one Help Help Help

I Have recently been having loads of problems with my sampler instruments. When I click on some of them they take a while to load I have used the Project Manager in Logic Pro 7.1.1 to scan and that used to work but now no matter what I do in it whether doing an expanded scan or a selected scan or designated selected paths to scan it doesn't seem to make any difference. I have trashed the PM Prefs even the Logic Prefs even trashed logic and put on a fresh install.
I recently in a desperate bid downloaded the demo of EXs Manager from Redmatica to re link my samples with the EXS interments after doing a little song and dance it came back with a great marketing ploy of having scanned so many instrument's it realised that I had more samples than the demo could handle to re-link the whole lot would need the full version which I will need to get at some point just to see whether it can do what it proclaims on the box.
I am getting an error message when trying to load a few samples which reads 'Logical end-of -file reached during read operation Result code=-39'
Can anyone tell me what this means

I haven't had that problem, but my gut is telling me you have a bad drive or corrupt data on that drive. I'd run disk repair, and then if that passes run Disk Warrior or something like it to verify your data.
EXS Manager works great, but it doesn't make samples load faster in my experience. EXS manager is more file management than anything...helps weed out unused samples and tidy up the organization.

  • EXS' Sampler Instrument Count Limitation

    Hello everyone,
Does anyone happen to know of a workaround/ solution to EXS' sampler instrument count limitation? I find myself constantly shuffling instruments and libraries in and out of the Sampler Instruments folder, a process which, given my 1TB library, is tedious and extremely time consuming.
Any "magic fixes" or insights would be highly appreciated..
    Thanks!

    Some clarifications:
I have been running EXS Manager, Pro Ed from the get-go.
Once again, my complaint is NOT regarding slow load times (which, believe me, is grounds for a whole separate post); rather the inability to access instruments altogether. In other words: past a certain, specific instrument down the list, others would simply no longer load. They are visible in the EXS menu, but are flat out "ignored" by the sampler.
Additionally, I have tried re arranging them using sub-folders, but to no avail: The Sampler Instruments folder seems to only be able to handle so many instruments.
    Anyone else..?

  • EXS samples in a partition disk

about puting the EXS samples in a partition disk instead of the system disk?, does it work better?, doesnt matter?

If you mean partitioning your main internal drive, and using that partition for your samples .... then, no, I wouldn't bother.
However, adding separate hard drive (SATA/FireWire 7200, etc) wouldn't hurt, and your samples may load faster, depending on your current configuration.

  • Migrating EXS Samples. Logic 6.4 - 8

    Hello.
I'm transferring my work from and old g4 powerbook to a new intel Macbook Pro.
I have a lot of unfinished projects on the Powerbook. What is the procedure for transferring my EXS library across?
If I copy the Sampler Instruments folder over, and the samples themselves, will Logic 8 find them? In fact I have no idea where Logic 8 stores samples for the EXS?
Just wondering if there is anything I need to know/watch out for...
    thanks

Turns out I spoke too soon.
The EXS sampler cannot load the samples I have moved over. It says they are 'not found'. For example I have a drum breaks exs instrument that contains maybe 80 drum loops. When the sampler opens it says it can't find the files, but the name of them seems to have been changed. Random letters and numbers have been added. For example there is a drum break entitled
    AfricanMusic_Machine_-Tropical.wav
But Logic says it can't find AfricanMusicMachineAEE36.wav
When I check the sample's name outside of logic it looks ok again.
Some of the samples load. But very few. If I go to the instrument editor the samples' names are present but they have an explanation mark next to them.
If I click on the exclamation mark and choose 'Open Audio File', I choose the correct file from my sample library but Logic says 'File name too long'.
Any help here would be much appreciated. Is there something I'm missing?
My move from a pb 1.5 to a MBP 2.4 has been totally plagued with problems (not just in Logic) and I'm beginning to wish I'd stayed with a G4 setup. The Trilogy and Atmosphere wrappers are pathetic (I am using them extensively in many an unfinished project)and I can't get Stylus to transfer over in my tracks either. The tracks are bare skeleton versions of what they were, nothing seems to be loading right.
    It's all very frustrating.

  • Option to see memory requirements for EXS samples?

This may be an ignorant question, but I'm curious if there is an option in the EXS to see how much memory a particular patch will require, similar to the way Kontakt shows you this information while browsing for a patch. I find it very useful information, as loading a great sounding but large sample instrument may prohibit loading further instruments. Knowing this before loading, I have a better idea of "where I have room to splurge" so to speak.
Thanks in advance for your help and reply!

s there anyway to see how much RAM is required for an EXS
instrument BEFORE you load it? How about amount of samples
    in a patch?
Not that I know of, but it would be a useful feature. There is a memory usage window, but it doesn't include samples loaded unfortunately.
In short, if your instrument has 345 megs of samples to load, then 345 megs of ram it will take to load them all in, with virtual memory off (if you're using 32-bit mode, then it will take more ram).
In streaming mode, since you are only loading small bits into ram at any one time, you don't really have to worry about RAM.
You can always check OSX's activity monitor to look at overall RAM useage.
The basic instrument contains 88 samples (it says 88 unresolved,
    what does this mean?
The instruments contain a pointer to where each sample is on disk. "Unresolved" means that the sample that the EXS instrument points too is not at that location on disk.
It's not a big problem - if the EXS can't find a sample it needs on loading, it will search your disk to find out where you've put it. This takes a little time, and is why instruments might take longer to load the first time. Once it has found where the sample is, it writes the new location back to the instrument, so the next time you load it, the EXS won't have to go hunting for it.
The Project Manage can resolve these references by doing the same thing to individual instruments or all instruments on your drive, but it takes a little while to run.
I know that both are small files and the differences are minimal,
but for the sake of understanding the concepts presented above,
since both contain the same amount of samples, would they both
take the same amount of RAM? Or because the velocity blend is a
larger file, does it take more ram? If you like the sound of both
programs equally, which would be the better choice based on
    resource allocation?
The size of the instrument file is completely irrelevant - it is miniscule in the whole sceme of things. The only thing that "really" takes up RAM is the samples themselves. Oh, and the EXS "shares" RAM too, so if you have two instances of the EXS with the same instrument loaded, the necessary samples are only loaded once.
This is also good for various articulations that sometimes might share samples - if a needed sample is already in memory, Logic won't load a second copy.
I'm probably reading too much into this topic, but it would be
helpful to understand how all this stuff works!
I really think you're worrying about this stuff too much. You have 5 gig of RAM for goodness sake! Build the setup you want, and if - *only if* you have resource problems then start looking at alternatives. With your rig, I can't see that you're gonna have many problems. It would be different if you were on a 1gig Powerbook or something, but trust me, you're gonna be fine.
My suggestion to you Jonathan is to turn streaming off, set up your ideal working environment, and do some test pieces to see what the performance is like. If you really start hammering the RAM, turn virtual streaming on, and see how that works for you.
I really think (as I've said before) you seem to be worrying about problem solving before you even have a problem! Just enjoy your copious amounts of RAM, you lucky so-and-so...!

  • Can I get a refund if album was down loaded twice

Can I get a refund if an album has down loaded twice?

Did you pay for it twice?
    MJ

  • Movie is loading twice

    Structure:
    * one main movie
** one swf loaded into that
    *** one mc in that
I animate the mc using the timeline (movement up) and on the
first frame of the same mc I generate up an interface inside it.
    This all works, but:
When the mc has generated the interface and animated all the
way up and stops....... It wipes clear and runs the script on the
first frame again. In effect the interface blinks for half a second
and everything that's been changed through functions up until that
needs to be called again. o_O
The wiping seems to coincide with the moment it hits the last
frame on the animation (ie a new keyframe), but that shouldn't
cause the movieclip to restart, right!? Someone must have had this
issue before, do I have to make a scripted animation instead of
    using the timeline?

Right I should have mentioned that, I do have stop() on the
animation and the mc that I generate an interface in is just 1
frame, which normally means it will run just once. (and if that was
the problem it would load a whole lot more times then twice, now it
loads twice and then it's done.)

  • Re-Linking EXS Sampler Instruments & Samples

1 - Curious what you think of this concept:
I have an external drive that I'd like to be able to move to several computers and use as my samples drive. To keep things consistent, I thought it best to keep BOTH EXS Sampler Instruments & Samples on this drive. Then I can just create aliases of the EXS Sampler Instruments and drop them in the main logic support folder. That way I can easily just move the drive to either computer for the greatest flexibility.
Is this ok to do? Is there a better way?
2 - I'd like to re-link many EXS Sampler Instruments to their samples. I used to use the ExsManager Pro.app but that stopped working a while back. Is there another way to have logic do all the re-linking instead?

  • Exs sampler need looped sample to play forever

I have made an exs instrument of 2 separate  1 measure arpeggiated keyboard lines that I have set to loop in EXS sampler on MS2.
I have the EXS set to Mono, and to Unison so that one looped sample will cancel out the other one,  I have now assigned 2 drum triggers on my midi drum kit
to each be the note that each of the 2 samples are assigned to. I have the release, sustain, decay cranked all the way on the EXS sampler, however, my samples still slowly die out.  Is there a way for me to make them play forever until I play the other sample or hit panic button?
as long as I hold the note it will play forever, however I want to be able to hit a trigger that's assigned to that note, and have it simply loop forever

    ù
Is loop in EXS24 editor flagged?  I think here around is your solution
    • Loop On checkbox: Activate to enable looping and to allow access to the other Loop parameters.
    • Loop Start, Loop End fields: Define discrete loop start and end points, allowing you to loop a portion of the audio file.
    • Control-clickeitherfieldtoopenashortcutmenuthatallowsaccesstotheLogicPro Sample Editor (or an external editor). This enables you to set the loop start and end points graphically: Loop Start is represented by the LS marker and Loop End by the LE marker. See Editing Samples in the EXS24 mkII Sample Editor.

  • Where is the best place for EXS samples?

I finally upgraded from my G4 which had space issues. Now I'm wondering: Should EXS samples be on the boot drive or the media drive? How about Reason refill, RMX samples etc.?
    Thanks in advance!

We know that the iPad only connects using wireless but don't know whether you plan to connect the iMac and/or the MacBook Pro using wireless as well.
If yes, the ideal spot for the Time Capsule would be a central location so that wireless devices would all be about the same distance from the Time Capsule.
Think of a wheel with a hub and spokes.  The Time Capsule would be the "hub". Each wireless device would be located at end of a separate "spoke".
If that won't work, Apple does offer devcices like the AirPort Express and AirPort Extreme that can "extend" the wireless signal for greater coverage.

  • How can I prevent pages loading twice?

Practically every time I click on a link in an email (Outlook 2007) Firefox 3.6.6. loads the page, displays "stopped" and then reloads it, leaving two tabs with the same title.
When I looked for a solution in this forum, searching for "firefox loads pages twice" I got 514 results filling 52 pages, but I soon discovered that though various versions of the question had been asked, there appeared to be no answer, and some replies got into technicalities that were beyond the average user of firefox.
    So I raise two points:
1 Can we have a better filter in the forums that does not list every individual hit on a word in the query, but only on the complete phrase (putting it in quotes did not help)?
    2. Has a solution been found yet?
== URL of affected sites ==

What is the point of this forum if over 500 people have a problem with pages loading twice, but nobody, neither volunteers nor someone from Mozilla, can provide a solution?
Perhaps it is time to switch to Opera.
