EXS24 instead of Gigastudio?

Can i use an external HD of Gigastudio libraries and use exs24 in logic instead of a new PC, new soundcard, and Gigastudio 3!!
I believe esx24 is efficient in logic, and that Klaus badelt and some other composers have done this and subsequently got rid of theire gigastudio pc's which are now replaced by exs!
BUT to get Giga sounds to load into exs it says to put them in a certain folder on the mac (sampler instruments?) so if i have an external 500GB drive of library how do i get this whole drive into that folder so it can be read??? or can you move the folder so the folder "becomes" the external drive???
Apple G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   4Gb Ram, Logic 7.1.1, PTLE 7.1, 20" Cinema Display,

Ok, yes it's possible. Libraries can go anywhere, but let me quickly outline the process.
1: You need to put your Gigsampler *.gig files somewhere so that they appear in the EXS instrument select menu. Typically, you put them into your "Sampler Instruments" directory, and they will show up here.
But if you don't want to move them, simply place an alias in the sampler instruments directory to the location on an external drive where your gig files are.
This is TEMPORARY, and is just in order for the EXS24 to see them so it can convert them.
2: Ok, now that the GIG files show up in the EXS menu, the *first time* you select them, Logic will convert the GIG files into EXS instruments and samples. Once you have done this, you no longer need the GIG file anymore, so you should remove the alias to them, or delete the GIG files themselves if you don't need them anymore.
3: Lastly, you'll probably want to put the converted WAV files for each instrument where you want them to reside, and the small sampler instruments files can stay in the sampler instruments directry. You can organise either of these as you wish.

  • Insrument missing when using green Apple Loop

    Greetings,
When dragging the green Apple Loop "Bread and Butter Bass 09" onto an audio instrument track in my arrange window, the result sounds very different than dragging the loop onto an audio track. When clicking on the "Bass" on the I/O of the channel strip of the instrument track, a small beige colored window pops up which says that it is the EXS24... which looks much different than the large green EXS24 (I presume the large green window is for the sampler and the other is not?).
Anyway, the EXS24 screen for bass says "MISSING: Thumbstroke Bass". Doing a search for Thumbstroke Bass reveals that there are three related files for this instrument on my system, and the file paths for each related file are as follows...
    For Thumbstroke Bass.pst... Hardrive/Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Instrument Library/Plug-In Settings/Bass/Thumbstroke Bass.pst.
    For Thumbstroke Bass.exs... Hardrive/Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Instrument/Library/Sampler/Sampler Instruments/Thumbstroke Bass.exs.
    And for Thumbstroke Bass.cst... Hardrive/Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Instrument/Library/Track Settings/Software/Bass/Thumbstroke Bass.cst.
How can I get the green Apple Loop in my instrument track to sound similar to the way it sounds in the Loop Browser? If the problem is the missing instrument above (Thumbstroke Bass), then how can I get this instrument into my EXS24? Do all three files above need to be put into a special place?
I performed a scan update in my project manager... thinking that this would insert the necessary files into my EXS24, but I noticed no change in the menus on my EXS24 (the ? sampler too).
    Thank you for the help...
    Power Mac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Thanks to all for the very helpful responses.
    Regarding Bee Jay's post...
The version of Logic that I am running is 7.2.3.
I recently added an extra internal hardrive (Seagate 500 gig, 7200 RPM) and installed the most up to date Tiger OS. I then installed Logic 7.01... a few weeks later, I upgraded Logic directly from 7.01 to 7.2.3 (bypassed 7.1).
In the process, I copied my garage band folder and portions of my Logic folder from my Seagate to my LaCie external hardrive with the goal of accessing instruments and samples from my LaCie. During recording, Logic is running on my Seagate, but the recording path records to my original hardrive. I noticed last night that the garage band folders on my LaCie and Seagate did not have the Thumbstroke Bass sample instrument files... whereas my original MacIntosh HD does have those files.
When installing the Tiger OS on my Seagate, I wanted to do a fresh clean install, and did not use Migration Assistant, and did not transfer any files from my MacIntosh HD which had Panther on it at the time. When updating to Tiger on the MacIntosh HD, I did a simple update preserving previous pref files, etc. (which explains perhaps why the Thumbstroke Bass files were not deleted on the MacIntosh HD).
I have some idea of some of the reasons this can happen.
The Garagaband instruments like "Bass", "Drums" and so on, are basically mini EXS24's. If you have a "Drums" instrument loaded, and load an EXS24 instead, the same instrument remains loaded and you can play it in the full EXS24 as normal.<<</div>
Yes, I have noticed the same above...
It turns out that there is a small amount of sample content that must be in a preset location - if it's not, Logic does not initialise any of the mini-EXS24's, and trying to load content that requires them will fail.<<</div>
    Thank you, that makes sense.
My mini-EXS24's do seem to initialize, but they have the message "MISSING: Thumbstroke Bass". I presume that the small amount of sample content that *must" be in a preset location is not there... the question is... How do I get it there?
Try going to an instrument insert slot, and see which of the Garageband instruments you have available. In 7.1.x, there should be about 15 or so instruments - if you can only see about 9 or so, and can't see "Hybrid-basic" and so on, then this is an indication that you may have missing or moved Garageband content.<<</div>
My instrument slots show about 15 or so instruments under the Garageband instruments, and the "Hybrid-basic" is there. Should I be able to find "Thumbstroke Bass" in the instrument slot menu also? (so far, I have not been able to find it)
See my thread here for more details on this:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=730936&tstart=0
Have a look and see whether this might be the problem you are having.
If not, then get back to me, it might be a case of your sampler instruments or samples not being found.<<
Very helpful thread... I see some parallels to my current problem. You wrote that you had aliased your "entire AppSupport/Garageband library to an external drive, which works fine with Logic and Garageband except the sample based instruments in Logic - they seem to ignore the alias and hence can't locate the *.exs and/or the samples which they need." At the time, I did not know that I needed to create aliases, but I think that aliases were effectively created when I simply clicked and dragged the files from one drive to another, correct?
The next step that you wrote about puzzles me... You wrote, "So after a big of re-jigging the library files around, I've ended having the "Sampler -> Sampler Files -> Hybrid Synthesisers" samples and the instrument settings in the real AppSupport/GB directory, with all the rest of the samples and GB loops on the external drive." I am confused as to which files and their paths that you are referring to...
Don't forget that "Scan" in the Project manager does not change anything.<<</div>
    I see!
I had forgotten that, and yes, it did not change anything.
In order to relink your files, you'll have to perform the "Resolve instruments" option, which goes and relinks sampler instruments with their required samples.<<</div>
    THANKS!
However, after opening the Project Manager, I cannot find anything in the drop-down menus for "Resolve instruments". How do I get there? Do I need to do another scan to get there?

  • UltraBeat, ESX Library in Logic Express 8?

I'm thinking of getting Logic Express, and upgrading to Studio later if I like it. I know that one of the big features of Logic Studio over Express is the much larger studio library. I have a good collection of soft synths/instruments (Native Instruments Battery 3, Massive, Absynth, Reaktor, and FM8) already. I was thinking about getting NI's sampler, Kontakt, but with Logic Express and Studio on the market for such good prices, I'm thinking of getting Logic (and thus EXS24) instead.
I was playing with Logic Express at the nearby Apple Retail Store and was quite impressed with what I saw available for UltraBeat and EXS24. But then I realized that Logic Studio was installed on the same machine and I was probably getting the full studio library, which made it hard to compare the differences between Express and Studio (in this particular aspect).
I haven't been able to find any details on the general size of the ESX library in Express. In the Studio pages, it says "The Studio Sound Library includes an enormous collection of 1300 pristine-sounding EXS sampled instruments."
Does anyone know how the Express library compares? I'm not looking for a huge sample library right now, but I can't find any specs at all. The Instruments pane on Apple's Logic Express page only says that EXS is a sampler, but nothing about the library. Are you satisfied with what's included in LE8? Are there enough instruments for real use, or does it feel annoyingly limited like some other 'Lite' / 'Express' packages?
    Thanks,
    J.Shell

    Hi,
The EXS24 library has to be larger in Pro simply because the samples they use in the online demo don't exist in Express 8. Express 8 has the same library as Express 7 but Express 8 has the full EXS24 sampler and not just the player. Since you're clearly a big synth user though I should tell you that the EXS24 library in Express does include a large collection of analog and digital synth samples. The only synth you get with Pro 8 that doesn't also come with E 8 is sculpture but that's one **** of a synth! Pro also has the Vintage instruments (B3, rhodes, clav) and the aforementioned Jam Packs. However You already have a huge sound arsenal in the native instruments stuff so you may not need the Pro extras. Probably the main thing you will have to decide is whether or not you need the film sinc, live performance, and surround sound capabilities of Pro. Pro also has a few more pluggins most of which are related to surround sound or mastering and its cd burning options are more advanced.
    Hope this helps

  • EXS24 "white noise" instead of patch

I have many custom exs files that play white noise instead of sound. This is clearly a logic exs24 issue because the same patches work fine in Kontakt 4. Has anyone else experienced this with custom exs files?

This is an old problem that relates to certain types of .wav (and possibly .aif files) that are old or sometimes ripped from CD or something. I can't tell you exactly what or why it happens but I know the workaround...
Basically I'm afraid you have to re-save every sample that is coming out as white noise as a new .aif and re-import it into EXS and it will work again.
You don't need to bounce them out, just go to 'save as' in the region overview and make sure you choose .aif and the relevent sample/bit rate. Don't leave as original...
Then you need to re-build your EXS instrument or overwrite the existing one with the new samples. It's not complicated and it will work but it can be long if you have loads of samples.
I used to get this problem with certain old .wavs imported from old CD-Rom sample discs and I think some files from my old PC. It has been discussed here before but doesn't come up much because it only seems to relate to very old files (something to do with old formats?). Anyway... enjoy

  • EXS24 : how can I launch and stop sound with key (instead of holding key)

    Hi,
I'm using EXS24 to launch sounds (like pads) : I've created a specific instrument with one sound on each note (with differents zones). I've checked the box "One-" to have the sound that continues without holding the key, but I would like to be able to stop the sound with the same (or an other) key.
    WIthout stopping the other sounds.
How can I do this ??
    Thanks for your help !
    Etienne

You can make groups, have your "sample off" key assigned to a short audio file of silence (or just turn the volume parameter of that sample to -96 in the zone editing area of the EXS.
Make the polyphony of the groups to 1. So you hit your one shot and it is playing through, when you hit the 'blank' key it plays instead - which is playing nothing.
Depending on what you need, you can copy the blank sound into different groups (hold option and drag) - but this would stop all groups with one key. So if you need independent control, you can copy the same blank sample to different keys, and then group those individually with the different sample triggers.

  • How to set default group in EXS24 patch?

    Hi,
This question is about the EXS24 sampler in MainStage 3.   I'm in no way an EXS24 expert, so I'm hoping this is an easy one - I can't find it in the manual anywhere though.  I'm working with some EXS24 patches that have been supplied to me for a live project, reproducing the recorded version using those patches.  They are set up with keyswitches to select sample groups to allow the use of different articulations.  The question I have is how to set the default group - so that every time the patch loads (for example) it selects the legato articulation group, instead of defaulting to staccato as it does at present.  I've thought about scripting MainStage to send the keyswitch on load of the patch but that seems like a lot of effort to fix something that surely must be an easy fix I'm missing.  From what I can tell, the last group defined is the one that loads automatically - but I can't find any way of changing the order of the groups - I can sort the view, but that makes no difference to the behaviour.

    Hello Gaurav,
If I understood correctly, Your requirement is to update People Group segments based on employee category.
Basically you need to update people group values based on employee category before insert into assignment table.
You can acheive this using Dynamic Trigger on Assignment Table.
you need to change the new.people_group_id along with other segment values in this trigger logic.
Following articles will help you steps on how to create dyanamic triggers.

  • Mapping Samples on EXS24

    Hi.
I've just moved from Gigastudio/cubase/pc to Logic/Mac and I'm having trouble using new ESX24 samples I'm installing onto the ESX24 sampler.
The notes are not mapped out properly across the keyboard - it only seems to use/see two of the samples within an instrument, and then maps thos across the keyboard with no changes in pitch. I'm installing them according to the instructions. Do I have a bug? Am I overlooking something? Any help much appreciated.
    Cheers.

I'm using the conversion with .gig samples. But it's also doing the same thing with EXS24 samples that I install myself (the ones supplied with logic are mapped fine). I'm starting to think there's a bug in my installation somewhere.

  • Why do some of my wav sample cd's not import into EXS24 sampler?

I read that you import sounds into the EXS24 sampler by dropping them into the sampler instruments folder located through the library>application support>logic> folders in the finder, anyway I have done this then opened logic created a EXS24 sampler and clicked the field where you load the sounds and I see the folder that I dropped into sampler instruments folder along with the standard factory sounds included with logic I open my samples folder to find a good few missing even though they are wav file which the EXS supports,Also some cds will have multiple files on them like rex aiff acid refill etc and the sampler will bring up the rex files which I cant use instead of the wavs Im really confused any help or solutions please!

    Hi Fatal
I've got a video on my site showing how to build an exs instrument from raw samples. This video focuses on drums, so creating pitched instruments is slightly different but it may give you a start.

  • Exs24 Expanded Scan or ?

I have a lot of Exs24 sampler insruments and I have gotten most of them to be recognized by the exs24 before, but recently I moved the Exs24 folder to one drive and then back to the original drive again. I opened logic once while the sampler instrument folder was in the new hard drive, not sure if that made a difference. But anyways, I moved the folder back to the original place and since then I've been doing expanded scans, scans, scan folder...and trying to get the exs24 to recognize the samples but nothing happens??! Now I moved the files to a different folder in the same hard drive called Sample Instruments instead of For Exs24...I don't know if that will make a difference. So now I'm doing any expanded scan again on this Sampler Instruments Folder I just created. I hope it works! It says its finding the sounds.... Do I have to quit Logic and reopen it before the exs24 can recognize these samples. Any advice??
I just want to be able to use my exs24 instruments.

Are you specifying the scan path? If not, then that might the problem. Also, you might want to look into purchasing Redmatica's EXS Manager if you have a very large EXS library. It will speed up load times quite a bit.

  • EXS24 question on keyswitching and round robin

I imported a Giga patch into EXS24, and the Giga patch imported two groups which are keyswitches.
However, I don't want to keyswitch between them. I'd like EXS to alternate between the two groups. In Kontakt-speak, this is called round robin.
How can I get that to work? I scoured the plug-in reference manual and found nada.

It's not a well-detailed item, but EXS can do it. (It's also called "Round Robin" in Gigastudio.)
Let's say your zones have been assigned to two groups, "Clarinet Staccato 1" and "Clarinet Staccato 2," and you want them to alternate every time they're played to lessen the machine gun effect.
Load the instrument. Click "Edit" in the EXS plug-in window.
Enable the viewing of "Select by" for groups.
For Clarinet Staccato 1, set "Select by" to "Group:" Now assign the Group to "---start---"
For Clarinet Staccato 2, set "Select by" to "Group:" and assign group to "Clarinet Staccato 1."
In other words, one group "starts", and the other plays the next keystroke after the first group has been heard.

  • AU's Disappeared, EXS24 incredibly slow...Help Please !

Okay, I am seriously out of my depth here. I haven't used Logic Pro for the past 4 months due to family trauma's. I booted up Logic for the first time today and have encountered some worrying problems I cannot seem to resolve. I have been as methodical as I can be, although at the best of times, this stuff eludes me as to how to solve it (technology not being my strong point). I will break it down as best as I can:
    PROBLEMS:
Logic booted up okay (having told me I need an update, not suprisingly after 4 mths). I installed this & it opened up fine.
I noticed that all my Audio Units (barring Virtual Guitarist, whose audio files were subsequently not located) were completely missing. In other words, East West library, B4, Elektric Piano, Battery, Absynth... and more were completely missing. They were not found in any drop down menu's. Project Manager did not show them in any list.
EXS24 still appeared to contain all it's previous instruments, but when I attempted to load these, eg PMI Bosendorfer, it took quite literally 4-5 MINUTES to load a single patch. Even with new samples, I have never known my system to take this long. Once loaded, the samples appeared to be fine, but obviously the amount of time taken to load is untenable.
Troubleshooting this myself I can only come up with a list of various options:
    1. My Imac G5 suffered with a known issue (the power adaptor needed to be completely replaced earlier this year, just prior to me stopping using Logic approx 5 mths ago now). The repair was carried out and the issues (ie the computer powering off unexpectedly disappeared)
    2. Sometime after that my computer suffered an unexpected kernel panic. My husband seemed to manage to repair this & it has not happened since.
    3. I transferred all my data onto a new Lacie (the porsche designed) hard drive. THis is the hard drive I am now using, and to my memory have never before used it with Logic. (in other words, before i was using a different hard drive, which I transferred data from and no longer use, but this was the hard drive I originally used with Logic)
I have since re-installed the software component of East West (leaving the samples where they were on this new hard drive). Logic now reads this fine, just as before, so this problem at least is fixed.
But I still have immense problems with the EXS24, which regardless of which samples I try to load (old or new, big or small) takes absolutely ages to find them. I have tried re-installing the Bosendorfer, having deleted the previous files. It still takes ages loading up the samples initially.
My conclusion is that it is either a problem with the EXS24, or with this new hard drive.
PLEASE PLEASE help if anyone out there has had this problem, or can work out what on earth is going on. I just want my system back to how it was. I am resigned to having to re-install all the other AU's but it is the EXS24 which is causing me real concern.....
And also the most obvious fix, the PROJECT Manager doesn’t seem to pick any AU’s up, just goes back to a Logic start up screen when I click ‘reset & rescan”

This isn't a problem as such. The reason that the EXS24 is loading slow is because you've moved your samples (onto a different drive).
    So instead of going:
Load Instrument -> Load Sample 1 -> Load Sample XXX -> Done
    Logic is going:
Load Instrument -> Load Sample 1 -> Drat, it isn't there, let's go on a merry hunt to see if I can locate it in the nearby vicinity -> ...still looking... -> Oh, there it is, cool. Better write the new location back to the instrument so I don't have to go looking for it next time, eh? -> Load Sample XXX -> Drat, it isn't there... etc etc
You can use the project manager to resolve missing samples on multiple instruments in one go. You should notice that once you've loaded an instrument and the EXS has found the correct samples, the next time you load it it will be just as quick as ever, as all the samples' locations have been updated and written back to that instrument.
Edit: The PROJECT manager has nothing to do with Audio Units. Perhaps you mean the AU Manager?

  • EXS24 Randomly Dropping/Changing Presets

    This is maddening.
When I open a saved Mainstage concert, the EXS24 will occasionally lose its preset for 2 or 3 of the instruments I have set up (and aliased in various patches), defaulting to a generic sine wave. Sometimes it happens right at load-in, sometimes during a patch change.
This is the last thing I need in the middle of a concert.
Today it went even weirder, it decided that instead of "Steinway Grand Piano" I needed "Piano + Strings". I have NEVER used P+S in any of my patches, ever. *** is it doing? Is this disk corruption? Permission issues? Or is there some bug I need to be aware of?

BTW, have you changed the EXS prefs recently? There's a setting for key commands for Next & Prev Instrument and I just wondered if they had been touched.

  • Convert GigaStudio Sound Banks for use in Logic (EXS)

I got ahold of some freeware GigaStudio sound banks (.GIG) and I was wondering if there's an easy to convert them into EXS-24 format. Or maybe some weird way to convert to SoundFont? Because I know how to convert SoundFont to EXS.

It's easy. Copy the .gig files to your Sampler Instruments folder, Open an EXS24 and load it from the center of the GUI and it will create EXS24 instruments.
Then delete or move the .gig files as they are generally large and will fill up your drive and bog down your system.

  • EXS24 Saving takes a LONG time. Bad EXS flaw?

    Hi all.
My EXS takes forever to save a new patch. I've had this problem for years and just dealt with it. But now, I'm sick of it.
The reason it takes so long is because of the way the EXS insists on rebuilding/rescanning your entire EXS library every time you add something new to it. It's completely unnecessary. And it makes things a nightmare for those of us who run LARGE exs24 libraries.
I've read of other people with the same problem (I've still never come across a solution!) yet still this problem exists. I can only assume that Apple seem to think that's is perfectly fine for those of us who run large EXS libraries to WAIT for anywhere up to or above 5 MINUTES just to save a new patch to their libraries.
The way it is set up (rescanning the library every time you add something new) clearly doesn't take into account those of us who run large libraries.
It has also made the wonderful new "Convert to New Instrument" virtually unusable to me, as every time I use it, the EXS then rescans the entire EXS library because I've added something new to it, so I literally sit there for ~5 minutes. God help me if I want to use that feature a few times while I'm working on something!
    PLEASE FIX THIS APPLE!
    Now my question:
Is there ANYBODY out there running a LARGE EXS LIBRARY (mine is about 350gb) who DOESN'T have this problem saving new patches?
If so, how do you get around this?
I've been on Logic for years (back to vers 4 or 5, I can't remember which) and this has ALWAYS been a terrible problem for as long as I've used the EXS as I've always run a large sample library. I'm pretty-much convinced that there is no solution to this and that it is just a terrible EXS flaw that Apple NEED TO FIX, but I guess I've got to ask before I give up entirely.
It shouldn't take 5 minutes to save an EXS patch on an 8-core Mac Pro. And again, it's not the saving of the patch that is the cause of the problem - it's the fact that the EXS rescans your library every time you add something new to it that CREATES this problem.
The main thing I was quietly hoping for before I installed the latest Snow Leopard and latest Logic 9 last week was "Maybe Apple have finally fixed the EXS saving issue!? I'll cross my fingers..!"
.... but no, it's still there. Still the same all these years later.
Anybody have any ideas on how to "minimize the damage" before Apple finally get off their bums and FIX this, and make the EXS more user-friendly for those of us who run large EXS libraries?
    Thanks all.

Surely, it's best for organization to have everything TOGETHER?
No, it's best to keep the sampler instruments and samples separate, in the main. If you look at Logic's content, and the jam Pack instruments, they all follow this scheme as well.
By keeping the samples in your sampler instruments directory, you are adding tens of thousands of files to be searched through - no wonder it takes a long time - probably takes ages to load Logic as well.
In addition to the workaround mentioned previously - if you don't save your sampler instruments to the sampler instrument directory, but instead to some other place (eg, the desktop), does Logic rescan the menus? If not, then I'd suggest always saving away from the main sampler instruments directory, and then copy them back there afterwards.
That would take me years to re-organize, not to mention that it starts making things very messy.... having parts of my libraries HERE, and parts of my libraries THERE.... saving new instruments..... backing up libraries.... installing new libraries.... etc...
Not really. IN fact, keeping the samples next to the sampler instruments is in some ways a bad solution - what if you create different sampler instruments based on those samples - do you duplicate a second copy of those samples to keep with those sampler instruments, or do you keep the sampler instruments accessing the samples elsewhere?
BTW Redmatica's ProManager or EXSManager can reorganise your sample library for you in this or other ways checking duplicates, relinking your sampler instruments, and letting you control where you put the samples and how you wish to organise them. Worth thinking about.
My Sample Library is about 290gigs. I keep the sampler instruments and samples separate, and have no organisational problems. And I have no problems with long EXS menu reloads either.

  • Can I show a color bar instead of a color bullet in iCal Monthly view for all my events in all calendars?

In the Monthly view of iCal the only events that show a color bar in the event is the Birthday Calendar. All other events in all my other calendars only show a color bullet next to the event (unless I click on that event which then shows as a color bar). I would like to know if it is possible for all the calendar events to have a color bar in the monthly view instead of just that tiny color bullet.

    Greetings Judith,
Before making any attempts at deleting calendar data, backup what you have just in case:
Click on each calendar on the left hand side of iCal one at a time highlighting it's name and then going to File Export > Export and saving the resulting calendar file to a logical location for safekeeping.
iCal has an automated function located in iCal > Preferences > Advanced > Delete events "X" days after they have passed.  By typing in a value for days you can tell iCal to delete all events before that time frame.
    Example:
    Today is 4-16-2012.
If I wanted to delete all events prior to 1 year ago (4-16-2011) I would type in "365" for the number of days.
Once you type in the number of days you want kept in iCal, close the preferences and then quit iCal.
Re-open iCal and check to see if the events are gone.  If not you may want to leave it open for several minutes and then quit again.
Once the events are removed go back to  iCal > Preferences > Advanced > Delete events "X" days after they have passed and make sure the check mark is removed to prevent future deletion.
    Hope that helps.
