EXS24 Instrument Editor - RIDE SUSTAIN

In the EXS24 Instrument Editor (perhaps elsewhere; I haven't checked), when I record a ride cymbal, it sounds wrong/choppy unless I hold down the sustain pedal on the keyboard. But when I play back the track without the sustain pedal held down, it sounds all divided-up again. (It sounds like a ride cymbal with a mongo gate on it, which totally goes against what a ride cymbal is supposed to be.) I can't find any obvious adjustment in the EXS24 editor - but it seems like such an obvious problem, there's got to be a simple solution.
Another question: In the EXS24 editor, is there a way to assign drum sounds to the black keys while not interrupting the white keys that are assigned to a different drum sound?

In the instrument editor...
Click the "one shot" checkbox for your cymbal. That should let it ring out.
As far as your assignments, assign them to different groups and set the characteristics for that group.

  • How do you save sample regions in the EXS24 instrument editor?

Hi There, I don't if my memory has failed me or something was changed in Logic pro 9 but I can't get a EXS24 instrument to save the sample region sections I set?? I open EXS24 click on edit, click on load zone, load a sample, click on edit in sample editor, set the region and then the new region doesn't set inside the EXS24 sample editor window? Tried saving the instrument, but it doesn't up date the selection? It just keeps the entire waveform as the sample? What am I doing wrong here? In the past this was really simple, you just moved the region on the sample area you want and the sample begin and end setting automatically update inside the EXS24 instrument editor window and then you just saved the instrument and each piece of the audio file as and how you set it was then on your keyboard ready to be used. Can anyone help me out here?
    Thanks

Got it to work, seems I had to resave the audio file again... weird glitch...

  • EXS24 Instrument editor

By hitting certain notes on the keyboard we can trigger different sounds in EXS24.
How can I setup EXS24 Instrument editor so when instrument is loaded it plays the first sound?
The only way to do this is arrange the groups in alphabetical order. Then loaded instrument plays the first group.
That's how it used to be in Logic 7.
But how can I do it in Logic 8?

Your question is a little bit confusing
What are you loading? Factory instrument sets that came with Logic or your own samples?
If you are loading your own samples, after creating a new instrument you need to create zones, where you can define the range and basic note of the samples (and much more).
Probably "all notes play at the same time" happens because you are not assigning zones to the individual samples.
Please start reading at page 520 of the Logic Pro 7 Plug-in Reference Manual for all the detailed information you need.
Hope this gets you on the succesful track of managing the instrument editor, which IMO is beautiful and powerful.

  • Logic Express 7 - EXS24 Instrument Editor

Just bought LE7. Can't find the EXS24 instrument editor (which is in LE6). Any ideas please? thanks.

    hi. thanks for the tip.
another problem: I've tried playing an EXS instrument I've created in LE6 in a song in LE7 and although I hear the instrument in the record mode, I can't hear it in the playback mode. there's a signal in the arrange window next to the audio instrument but no signal in the volume area in the mixer. this isn't happening with pre-existing EXS instruments.
    any idea please?
oops. solved this. just needed to switch out of logic 7 and re-boot. doh!

  • Question for EXS24 instrument editor experts!

    Can anybody help with this?
here's what I'm trying to do:
I'm trying to combine a solo violin instrument and a solo cello instrument into one EXS24 instrument that has the violin in the higher octaves and the cello in the lower octaves, not overlapping (to use with my EWI).
These are VSL (Vienna Symphonic) instruments, a different sample every half step, 3 velocity layers (different group for each velocity layer). So each instrument has around 150 audio samples.
Here's what i tried so far:
I opened the violin instrument, I added a new group and named it "solo cello pp". I drag dropped all the cello pp samples into the new group. I chose "auto map" in the dialog box.
OK, when I look in the new group it got all the zone key notes right (zone key note matches the audio sample name)
But... every zone has a key range of "Lo C-2, hi G8" so when I play the patch I'm hearing all the samples playing at once (because every zone has the full key range)
OK ... I can just go type in the correct key range for each zone (like for the A#3 sample: "Lo A#3, hi A#3" etc.) but with 150 samples per inst., that's typing in a field 300 times! Kind of insane! and I plan to build several instruments like this (trombone/trumpet, bassoon/oboe etc.)
Is there a smarter way to do this?
I suppose I could probably just keep the violin & cello instruments separate, constrict their ranges so they don't overlap, have them on separate tracks, record enable both tracks, and play it that way. But it would just be more idiot proof to have it all in one EXS24 instrument.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Tripp

EXS is not the easiest to work with.........
    but , do this:
bring two EXS's up on two different channels.
load the vlns in one, the cello in the other.
open the cello edit pane. switch to "group" and select all groups.
open the edit menu and click on "copy".
next, open the vln editor, then click on edit and select "paste".
this should copy the cello in the vln pane.
if they overlap, you'll have to move them an octave and probably limit the range.
    save as....... a new patch.
    DR9.

  • EXS24 Instrument Editor - No sound

When picking drum sounds for the "Audio File" in the "Zone" box -- such as KICK BB 21.aif -- I can "play" the sound and hear it (i.e., while choosing which kick sound I want). But, once I "open" this sound, and it's the chosen sound in my Zone box, I can't hear anything when I play any of the keys, even when the default range of keys is set to ALL of the keys. Thus, I know my speakers are working (it plays when I'm choosing), but apparently something else isn't set up right.

Thanks very much. Once I saved the drumkit, chose the EXS24 as the instrument for the track, and selected the new drumkit within the EXS24, everything worked great.

  • Lost EXS24 instruments

    hi
I made a new instrument in 2 songs in exs instruments editor. I saved them and for a while they showed up in the list of instruments when you loaded exs24. Now they are not there. In one of the 2 songs in question the instrument still shows up and can be played (but not saved) but in the other song the instrument is totally lost. Any clues. The drive the songs are saved on had it's enclosure go dodgy but is now in a new one an is working again.....
    any suggestions greatly appreciated

Try Reindexing spotlight to begin with:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15400327#15400327
then repair disk permissions with disk utility, or better do that the other way round! Can you locate the instruments yourself in the finder?
No unusual issues after installing LPX, you'll end up with two fully functional DAWs. Considering that 32 Bit plugins are rendered unusable in LPX, all is surprisingly well afterwards. At least so it was in in a few cases I know off!

  • EXS24 instrument created from audio region- How to  move files?

In Logic Pro X. I have created an EXS24 instrument from an audio region with 3 well-separated sounds. The instrument in EXS24 editor shows a zone with 3 files. Each file is actually the same physical file, but, when examining the three separate "files" (what should I call them??), a different section is highlighted for each tone. I can set a note for each of these "files". This instrument plays perfectly.
So now I have 2 files in my project folder  - a .exs one for the instrument, and ONE SINGLE .wav file somehow representing three different samples. I want to move them to ~Library/Application Support/Logic/folderName, where folderName is , say,  myInstruments (for .exs) and mySamples (for .wav). When I do this, and erase the files in the project folder, I can load the instrument and the sample file into EXS24, but the sample file is recognized as one single tone - that is, in the EXS24 editor, there is only one file rather than 3, and that file has all three audio sounds.
How do I move these files correctly? Is there some way to get them created originally in the correct place?

  • HOW DO I TRIGGER GROUPS IN AN EXS24 INSTRUMENT VIA MIDI FROM THE SCORE

HOW DO I TRIGGER DIFFERENT GROUPS IN AN EXS24 INSTRUMENT VIA MIDI CONTROLLER MESSAGES FROM THE SCORE - PLEASE ? WHERE DO I GO IN DOCUMENTATION AS HAVE GIVEN UP FOR TIME BEING WITH MULTI INSTRUMENT WHERE I CAN'T SEEM TO DEFINE CUSTOM BANK SELECTS BECAUSE I CAN'T FIND THAT OPTION. BUT MAYBE I'M ON THE WRONG TRACK ANYWAY! WITH THANKS

For those who are following this thread I have received the following info from LPH: it hasn't dealt with this through midi controllers but with key switches in a v. easy to work with fashion, though I would still like to have a result with former, if there is anybody that can give me a clear proceedure. Christian thanks for your help and if you are offay with MC's then I love to hear from you!
    METHOD #1
Create a duplicate track for those instruments which you're keyswitching. Let's just focus on one instrument for now, flute. Create a duplicate track assigned to your flute instrument ("new track with same instrument/channel"). Next, copy all of the regions from the original track onto this track and merge (glue) them to create one contiguous track. Of course if you have only one region for the part, just copy the region over to the new track.
Then go into the piano roll editor and swipe the keyboard on the left in the range of your keyswitches. Then use the command "toggle selection" and hit DELETE. Now you have a region that contains only your keyswitches.
Or, of course, you can just swipe the range that the instrument plays in. Then hit DELETE. Either way...
The final step here is to untick the "score" checkbox for this keyswitch-only region (region parameters). Now, both tracks will still play, except only the actual flute part will appear in your score.
    METHOD #2
In the score editor, open the staff style for the part. Set the highest note/lowest note range to (visually) filter out the keyswitch notes. This may seem like the easiest way to do things, but it will require you to have a distinct staff style applied to each part. For example, if you're using the Treble staff style for multiple parts (picc, flute, bass clarinet) and their key switches are in different ranges of the keyboard (as is the case with some libraries), you will need to create duplicates of "Treble", name them accordingly (picc, flute, b.clarinet), assign them to the various regions playing those parts, and then set their highest/lowest note values accordingly.

  • 7.2.1 EXS24 trashes notes when sustain pedal used

I have an M-Audio Keystation Pro 88 connected to a Mac Mini Core Duo through a USB port. A Presonus FirePod is my audio interface.
When I play a Chopin piano piece using the EXS24 Yamaha stereo grand piano, using the sustain pedal as I normally would, after a short while I start hearing pops and clicks and the notes are jumbled.
I can play the same Chopin song while the synthesized piano is used, using the same sustain, and not have any pops and clicks.
If I move the track I just recorded with the synthesized piano over the the EXS24 Yamaha Grand, it plays it just fine.
What am I doing wrong? I just moved from a 400Mhz G4 1GB RAM running Logic 4.8 - and I didn't have any issues playing with sustain using its EXS24.
Actually, the 1st time I played the track back on EXS24 (recorded with synthesized piano), it seemed ok, but no - it is messing up royally. I looked at the 'system performance' audio and disk i/o. The audio bar hits the top - and this is on just a single EXS24 instrument.
I must be doing something wrong - I had multiple EXS24 instruments playing with Logic 4.8 on the G4. Please tell me this isn't true!

I found a setting that greatly helped.
I turned "larger disc buffer" to 'off' (the manual says it defaults to off, but it was set to 'on' without my help) - this greatly lessened audio cpu load with EXS24 for the single stock Yamaha grand that came with Logic Pro.
I am no longer having a problem when just a single EXS24 Yamaha grand is playing or being recorded - I'll have to experiment a bit more to see what happens with multiple tracks.
Is there a tech note somewhere on setting up the Mac & Logic for best performance?

  • Drum Loops Missing But Plays Fine? EXS24 Instrument "2-step remix.exs"

Half of my drum loops play just great in the loop browser but when I drag them to the playhead I get the error message "EXS24 Instrument "2-step remix.exs" not found." and the same loop that just sounded great in the loop browser instantly morphs into some nasty series of sine wave beeps and clicks. What could possibly cause this?
    Much thanks for any ideas.

That does make a lot of sense, I'll check the computers tomorrow when I get back to the studio and see. I usually sling the control over to "never" for putting the computer to sleep but I don't remember doing anything to the HD sleep.
Many thanks for that suggestion, fingers crossed.

  • HT3989 i've migrated from my macbook pro to iMac and now some patches of the exs24 instrument do not work in logic

    hi community,
I recently bought a new imac and migrated form my macbook pro. I'm running logic and when i opened one of my logic project files i've been working on, some files (mostly exs24 instrument files) would not load up with the project file...a message was displayed with each file that could not be "detected" with an option to "Continue" or "Search again"...if you "search again" nothing happens and if you "continue" the files ends up loaded up with the exs24 instrument on some tracks not reading the patch file? This also happened with some audio files which would not load with a logic project file? I really do not want to reinstall and risk losing anything more...please help

    Hi
Migration Assistant seems not to work well for some with Logic. Probably the easiest way to sort this would be to re-install the content.
You could check Library:Application Support:Logic and Library:Application Support:GarageBand for the "missing" files to see if the really are there.
If they are, it may be a Spotlight issue, which can be fixed by 're-building' the Spotlight Index.

  • Random grumblings about EXS-24 instrument editor

I made a very complex sampled instrument for EXS-24 last week, with release samples, three layers of velocity...Lotsa samples.
They sure are hard to manage in the instrument editor, when you have a lot of samples.
Setting all those zone parameters and all.
It made me wish for something like Apple Loops utility where I could tag the samples with metadata and when I import the samples into the instrument they all map out correctly.
There is an option when you import the samples to have them map out to a pitch if you name the files with a note name.
Makes me wish for more, I would like to specify a lot of info about the sample.
Pitch range, velocity range, part of a group, non transpose,
Things that are currently in the Zone parameters I would like to specify ahead of time.
It would be nice to select a group of samples and tag them all at once.
Much like you would tag songs in iTunes.
I guess I needed to vent cause it took Soooooo long to do.
I had to go in and adjust the zone parameters one at a time and it was very time consuming.
    It's time for EXS-24 MK3
Oh, and have it ready by the Namm show for me will ya?

I agreeeee, it's time to EXS-orize this plug!
Apologies in advance if what I'm about to write is preaching to the choir... Some EXS make-your-life-easier tips...
    1. When creating a complex instrument of, say, multiple velocity layers, create separate EXS instruments for each layer. Then when it comes time to combine them into a single instrument, copy and paste the zones/groups into a single master instrument.
    2. Applicable to the tip above, but using a different example... If you were to create a split instrument of, say, bass and piano, into a single EXS instrument, and the ranges of the two sounds didn't overlap, the EXS display would show a single line of contiguous zones. Visually there would be no way to tell where the bass ends and where the piano starts, making programming difficult. But you can force each sound's zones to occupy its own row in the zones display by adding dummy zones below the first zone and above the last zone in each sound. Then, when you combine these to form your split instrument, each sound will occupy a separate row in the display.
To ensure that these zones don't get erased in the event you use the delete unused zones function, program them with an audio file that's nothing but a short piece of silence.
    3. All zones and groups can be re-named. Dbl-click on the name shown and a text field will open so that you can change it.
    4. There's a function called something to the effect of "move last played zone to top" which, along with the other function that reveals the last zone(s) played, makes it tons easier to access the zones you're tweaking.
    HTH.

  • Converting audio samples to EXS24 instrument

I have an audio track that contains a sequence of samples from a live instrument. The samples run from C0 to C7 in increasing order.
What's the easiest way to turn this into an EXS24 instrument?
    Thanks
    Eric

First slice the track using the Strip Silence function (in L9 you could also use Flex mode to splice the track), then convert all the resulting regions into new Audio files using the copy/convert function. Then drag all those files into the EXS (hit the edit button first) using the contiguous mapping feature, set the lowest note to C0 or wherever you want the mapping to start.

  • EXS24 Instrument problems

HI, im very new to Logic and need some help.
I have managed to load a sample (my own, taken from a song) into a zone in the instrument editor to then use and play with in the arrange window.
But why does the speed of the sample increase and decrease up and down the scale on the keyboard. Im sure it wasnt doing that before.
Can some one please help. I just want to be able to laod up a sample and then play it up and down the keyboard with out the speed/pitch changing.
thanks to anyone who can help.
    DT
p.s another problem i find is that when i loop a sample (in an instrument track) in the arrange window with drums ive made, the drums loop but not the sample. It just cuts out as the loop starts again.
    please help.

But why does the speed of the sample increase and decrease up and down the scale on the keyboard. Im sure it wasnt doing that before.
In that zone box, make sure you enable "Disable Pitch".
As to your looping problem, I'm not sure I'm understanding what you're saying.
If you're saying that you are looping a MIDI region on the arrange page, but the loop from within the EXS doesn't also loop, you're talking about 2 different things.
The MIDI file on the arrange page is simply triggering the loop from within the EXS. It doesn't know WHAT the sample is, it's just playing the sample, like you've instructed it to do.
The sample itself is not looped, but the MIDI note-on event is.
