Ext HDD seen by 2011 MBP but not 2014 MBA

Hi all
My GF just unboxed a new 13" MBA. One of the models refreshed last week
She wants to set up fresh & just bring over some data from ext HDD's she used with her old MBP.
It is a 2Tb Seagate Drive (USB 3), which has an external power supply.
The drive is formatted into 2 partitions, a 1.5TB OSX Journaled and a 500Gb FAT-32 (for when she needs to transfer files to/from a PC).
The drive shows up fine on her MBP just fine. In Finder & Disk Utility.
However on the new MBA, there is no signs of it at all. Disk Utility & Finder shows nothing.
Both left & right USB ports on the new MBA work ok. I can see a different Western Digital (USB 2) powered ext. HDD no problems.
The Seagate drive LED lights up when plugged into the MBA and you can hear it spinning, it just won't show anywhere in the OS.
Any ideas brains trust?
I've done all the usual troubleshooting.
Could it be something to do with the firmware on the MBA needing upgrading?
Thanks, Luke

hi
typo mistake, what I meant to say is that your external HD is recognised by you old MBP and it is running in MBA but not shown (not being recognised as external USB) as you said that "The Seagate drive LED lights up when plugged into the MBA and you can hear it spinning, it just won't show anywhere in the OS." , have you checked that the power for the exHD on? because as I said ealier that I have ex HD imation 1 Tb used as backup for TimeMachine and someday forgot to turn on the power supply but when the exHD was plugged, the LED ON and I could hear the drive running, unfortunately not recognised by me MBP until I turned the power on. If the power is ON in your exHD then I suggest to contact apple customer service not the community only as you MBA is 2014 and under warranty

  • 2013 AEBS works w/ 1 MBP but not with 2

I have a new 2013 AEBS in new office with TWC-BC via UBEE modem/router.  AE is configured in Bridged mode.  I have 2 MBPs, iphones, ipads, etc connected wirelessly.  I have 1 windows machine wired.
Everything works great until I have both MBP's connected.  When both are connected one of the 2 continues to work great but the other's internet performance goes to basically nothing.  It will sporadically download content but is basically useless.  As soon as I disconnect the working laptop the failing one picks right back up.
It is consistantly the same machine that continues to work of the 2.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Keith

That is typical sort of problem I expect and do see over and over in the PC world.
How big a gap is there in the age of the two MBP? Are they both running the same OS?
If they are different it would be helpful to give us the info from the System Profiler so we can see which cards and drivers are in each machine..
If you can copy and paste that info.
    So mine looks like this.
    en0:
Card Type:          AirPort Extreme  (0x14E4, 0x8E)
      Firmware Version:          Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (5.10.131.36.9)

      Status:          Connected
That is on the older machine.
    Here is the 2011 MBP

    As something to try..
Give a different name to 5ghz band.. and force one computer to 5ghz .. the closer one.. and see if that balances it better.
How much download capacity does your ISP give you and is one wireless connection using it all??

  • Title overlay works fine on MBP but not imac. Why?

    Hello,
I have this problem with putting a title into FCPx that happens on my iMac but not on my MacBook Pro.  I am hoping someone in here can explain to me why, and how to fix it.  These are screenshots of the issue on my iMac, as well as screen shots of what it looks like when it's on my MacBook Pro, which is the way it's supposed to look.
The titles are .mov files with a transparent background.
iMac view -  This is the original view on my timeline with NO title added
iMac view again -  This is the view on my timeline when I put the title over my video on my iMac
MacBook Pro - It works perfectly on my MacBook Pro as can be seen here.  This is the same exact frame as it is on my iMac.
FCPx is the most recently updated version on both.  I just really need help with figuring out why it works on my macbook pro, my husband's macbook pro, but not my iMac.  They are all the same version of FCPx.
    Thanks so much,
    K-

You must be using proxy media on the iMac.
The ProRes proxy codec does not support an alpha channel, so the transparent parts would be black, as you are getting.

  • Can be seen in my computer but not itunes????!!!!

After i clicked "manually update checked songs bla bla bla"
and restarted the computer, my ipod shuffle only shows up in my computer but not itunes!!!
    can someone please help?
    THANKS!!!!!

Since you re-formate you computer your iPod will see it as a new computer.
First get iTunes to see your computer:
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
After that you can move iTunes purchases, including your apps. to the "new" compouter by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer
Also, you can always redownload apps at no additional cost:
How to redownload purchased apps from the App Store
If necessary you can transfer non-iTunes music to your computer by using one of the third-part programs discussed in in this previous discussion.
    Best iPod to PC
Make sure that the .xml folder/file is actually music and not just a listing of music Ican y place the songe in iTunes on the computer).
After you get everything in your iTunes library, restore the iPod to factory defaults/new iPod and sync your stuff to the iPod.  You will lose your app date since you do not have a iPod backup file t restore from.

  • ITunes install 10.6.3 freezes on MBP (but not on iMac)

The installation of the iTunes update 10.6.3 on my iMac Mac OS X (10.7.4), 2011, 27", i7, SSD ran without problems
    But
After trying to install iTunes 10.6.3, I get all kinds of strange problems on my MBP 10.7.4 2011, i7, SSD
Almost all programs I use cause problems and I cannot end Mail or restart the laptop. Must be forced.
Document "Read first" in the install package is not readable.
The installation process runs until abt. 70% finished, then says 2 more minutes, 7 minutes, 12 minutes etc.
After reinstalling Lion I'm back at iTunes 10.6 (40) and the MBP seems to work reasonably normal
    Have I done something stupid?
Time for Apple to do something?

Thats what me and the guy on the phone thought, he tried tking
Me through it, he then said, actually, there is only
Support for mac users on the site aswell, as he was trying to direct me to email support aswell, though he then realised that gettin support on the apple express is now just for mac too
I cant complete the install of iTunes 10.6.3, no.
As cant many other windows 7 users.
But it does install so much that its useable, but doesnt fully install and doesnt complete mobile device application at all, so i cant sync or even connecty iPhone to itunes.
The message reads pretty much the same as this one posted earlier
"The installer encountered errors before iTunes could be configured
Errors occurred during installation. Your system has not been modified"

  • DVD player seen by Parallels/Windows but not by Macbook Air

    Hi
I have a Macbook Air with Windows running on Parallels.  I have a DVD drive connected via a Thunderbolt display.  If I put a disk into the drive it is seen by Windows and not by the Macbook Air.  How can I get it to be seen by the MBA and is there a way of switching - eg choosing whether the MBA or Windows sees it
    Many thanks
    Ken

I have a similar problem. I have not used my iPod in a few years. I recently bought a mac. The iPod syncs fine on the windows, but is completely unrecognized by my MacBook Air. I had to buy a USB connector because my iPod had only a firewire cable. Perhaps that's the issue? Disk Utility doe not recognize it. ITunes does not recognize it. In disk mode the screen still reads "OK to disconnect" after I plug it in. Any ideas? (I followed the Rs on the Windows where it's working fine...)
I am abandoning my PC altogether and I am becoming addicted to podcasts. Getting this to work with my MacBook Air would satisfy my new addiction.
    Thanks,
    T

  • 2011 MBP 17" not charging when playing WOW, Help

    Hey all,
    Just bought this 17" MBP:
    2.2Ghz quad-core i7
    8GB RAM DDR3 1333 Mhz
    500GB HDD 7200 RPM
so when im playing World of Warcraft, and lets say my battery is at 60% and i play for 6-7 hours while its Plugged in, I'm shocked that I find the battery at 62%-63% ! after 7 houors of charging ... so I keep an eye on the charger and it stays green (doesnt charge) for 70% of the time ..
I sent it to apple store and they say nothing wrong with battery or charger ..
    any tips ?

Tip #1: Don't play so much WOW - it's a massive waste of time and money.
Tip #2: You don't actually have a problem. You are running a very power hungry game on a limited power suppply. The power supply you have is adequate, as you're not losing any power.

  • Leopard ok on MBP, but not on G5 - how to eject disk?

Having had a successful Leopard install on my MBP machine, I thought installation on my G5 twin processor would be a breeze - how wrong could I be? I've tried reinstalling (twice) and all I get is the dreaded blue screen on restarting. I can't even get back to install Tiger because I can't eject the Leopard disk - nothing seems to get rid of it. Any ideas?

OK, so back to the G5. I'm having similar issues with a quad G5. My (Intel) iMac installed flawlessly, and is running OK - no hiccups so far. But the G5 went into a tail spin. First time 'round it installed OK, but several of the applications wouldn't launch, or quit unexpectedly shortly after launch. It also seemed a bit slower than before and rather jumpy (Activity monitor was jumping all over the place). Not sure if there is an issue with Spotlight having to re-index everything and that's why we need to leave it alone for a day or so, or if there really are issues with some of the applications. The most frustrating to me is iTunes, because my iPhone is linked to this machine, and I can't update it.
I'll try booting from the install disk, repairing disc permissions, etc. and report back what I find. Meanwhile I have inadvertently started a second install of the OS (where are the utilities on the install disk anyway?) and am waiting for it to finish....

  • Recurring meeting in Outlook 2011 calendar but NOT on Exchange server (OWA) or iPhone

Macbook Pro w/Outlook 2011.  User has one (of many) recurring meetings he accepted (a weekly meeting) and it shows fine in his Outlook calendar
    (setup for Exchange).
This one recurring meeting does NOT show up on the users' iPhone or in OWA (meaning it is not on the Exchange server).
How can I get this one recurring meeting to sync (or at least get moved) to his calendar on the Exchange server so it can sync to his iPhone?
Asking the person who originated the meeting to re-invite is not an option.
    Thank you.

Are there any sync issues logged on the client?  You may want to turn on logging (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj984217(v=office.14).aspx) and see of there
are any communication issues.  If you believe this to be a corruption in the Outlook 2011 DB, you may have to rebuild it (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2360509/en-us).
Anyways, I would have them look for the original meeting request in their mailbox via OWA.  It might have been accepted and moved to deleted items, but the original meeting request should be there unless it was too long ago. If it is found, accept it
in OWA (no reply).  Then look for sync-issues to the Mac client.
If you cannot do the above, check out
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2547327/en-us and see if that process changes your behavior.
    Hopefully that helps!

  • Ipod can be seen by Windows 7, but not seen by Itunes.

Hi - A friend has a Dell laptop running Windows 7.  It was recently in the shop to remove a virus.  Everything now works fine, except it won't work with any of her ipods.  The ipods can be seen under Devices and Printers, and by the Device Manager.  They aappear to be associated with the correct drivers.    But if I select to view the properties using Device Manager, the spinning wheel cursor appears, and the Device Manager.stops responding.  The laptop also will stall in the shutdown process, if the ipod is connected.  Disconnecting the ipod at that point, causes the laptop to finish shutting down.
I should mention that an ipad works fine with Itunes on the laptop.
I have reinstalled the Itunes drivers and software several times.  I've put the ipod into disk mode, also tried a different ipod cable, and neither helped.  I've run virus scans using different anti-virus software, but they don't find anything wrong.   I'm able to use the same ipods on a different Dell laptop that is also running Windows 7, so I don't think the ipods are a problem.
Nothing else on the laptop seems to be broken.  Everything else works.  Other USB devices work fine, so I don't think it's a USB issue.
The next step appears to be to reinstall the operating system.  But I would like to know if there is anything else worth trying before doing that.
    Thanks. - Mark

    1. Update iTunes to the latest version. Plug in your iPod. If iTunes still can't recognize it, then in iTunes in the top left corner click help> run diagnostics. On the box that comes up, check the last two things. Click next and it should identify your iPod.
    2. Click on your windows start menu. Type in "services". Click on it and when it pops up, on the bottom of it click on "standard". Now Scroll down to find "Apple Mobile Device" Right click it when you see it and click on "Start". When it has started, close iTunes and replug in your iPod and it should show up.
    3. Check the USB cable
4 Verify that Apple Mobile Device Support is installed
    5. Restart the Apple Mobile Device Service and verify that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed.
    6. If you just want to add some photos, songs and movies from computer to your devices, you can use an iTunes alternative to do the job
    7. Check for third-party software conflicts.

  • IPod seen in "My Computer" but not iTunes

I recently sent my laptop into repair after their was a fault my the HDD, I got the laptop back yesterday with everything wiped from it. I have redownloaded iTunes and pluged my iPod into the laptop via USB, however the iPod has not came up on the source lists. I need help.

    Try here:
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
To not lose info on your iPod do this after you get iTunes to see the iPod.
Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive: Apple Support Communities

  • IPod is seen on the desktop but not in iTunes

I have a 20gig standard iPod that I purchased a year ago, and a few days ago all of the songs on it just dissappeared and it is no longer recognized in iTunes. But it does show up on the desktop and I can few files I have saved on it. Is there a way to fix this?

Unfortunately, there is no one ‘Silver Bullet’ answer for this issue. Many things can contribute to the problem.
Try Resetting Your iPod while it's connected to the computer.
Hold down the Menu and Select buttons until you see the Apple logo (or Menu & Play/Pause in older models).
This will often get it recognized. It may take several attempts.
Other USB connected peripherals may be the cause as well. Try removing all connected USB items and attaching the iPod. If you have a USB keyboard, it may be worth a try using the adapter to convert it to non-USB. If the iPod connects, continue plugging things back in until you have the problem return. You may have then isolated the issue. Sometimes it could be a printer, camera, Flash Card reader, or other attached device causing a conflict.
If your iPod shows up in Explorer under 'my computer' try changing the drive letter: Click on Start=>Control Panel=>Admin Tools=>Computer Management=>Disk Management. Right-Click on the iPod and select “change drive letter”. Choose something further along in the alphabet that is unused. Usually, “M”, “N”, “O”, or something similar.
If that doesn't work, Put Your iPod into Disk Mode then plug it in and you should be able to Restore the iPod
Also try this (and the other suggestions above) from any other USB port you may have on the PC. Sometimes switching USB ports can make all the difference.

  • Text seen in swf file but not seen in flash pro. publish

I am using fmath formula component for flash. when i push ctrl+enter, texts in formula object are not seen, there is only tiny squareroot symbol. however, when i open created swf file, everything seems normal. I use flash player version 11.2. . Also, everything is ok in version 9.
    http://www.fmath.info/flash/download.jsp

Are you setting the font that is being used to display the formula yourself? If so is it properly embedded and issued to the component properly? A quick way to check is to use a known system front (Arial, _sans, etc) and see if text shows up. If it does you're just not either embedding properly or aren't pointing to the font correctly in the component.

  • Actionscript code can be seen in a search, but not seen in Actions Panel nor symbol

    I purchased a template which has flash menu buttons.  The current button url's go to index.html, index-2.html, index-3.html, and so on.  I want to change these.  In Flash, I searched for index-3.html and it finds it at the location:  Symbol 'Button2 copy 3' -> Layer 'Layer 4' -> Frame '1'   and the actionscript command is:  getURL("index-3.html");
Everything is fine so far.  However, when I double-click the symbol and go to the location (or double-click the search result), the actionscript command cannot be found at all.  I tried pressing F9 to open the Actions Panel, and I see the button symbol but I don't see any actionscript commands associated with it.  It seems to be very unusual - the search picks up the actionscript command but it can't be seen in the symbol's location where it says it is nor can it be seen in the Actions Panel.  The script does work but it just cannot be seen!  Does anyone know how to see the actionscript code in the Actions Panel or in the button symbol?

show a screenshot of movie explorer after searching for getURL("index-3.html")

  • Video (mov)  in iPhoto 8 library seen in iPhoto 8 but not iMovie 8.

After installing iLife 08, I can see my photos and videos in iPhoto 08, and the videos (mov from Kodak V570) play fine in QT. However, in iMovie 08, I cannot see all of my videos in the event library (though the manual leads me to believe I should be able to see them). I can see some of my videos (the ones that I had on the computer when I installed iMovie 08). I cannot see any video that I imported into the iPhoto library after initial install from within the iMovie 08 event library. If I try to import the video, all of the video files within the iPhoto library are grayed out. I can import the videos (mov) just fine into iMovie06.
Much discussion on this topic within the iMovie08 forum. No solutions, though. A person suggested that the topic be raised in the iPhoto forum, since the iPhoto library in iPhoto08 is the library for iMovie08. Appreciate any help.

I have exactly the same problem as well... I upgraded from iMovie HD to iMovie'08. I can only see one video clip from my iPhoto library but I have over hundreds of these clips... not sure why. I am using *.AVI video files.
