Ext USB Improper Removal on Sleep

I have a USB external hard drive.
When ever putting the computer to sleep, it immediately awakens with a message regarding an improper device removal. This only happens when the USB HD is mounted and I put the computer to sleep. (I have a few FIrewire HD and this never happens with them).
Obviously, I can eject the USB HD 1st.
But my discussion here is why does this happen, and how can I keep it from happening.
Any thoughts,
Harmz

Generally it is not a good idea to leave external drives plugged in when putting the PowerBook to sleep as they can prevent the PB from either going into or waking from sleep properly. Personally I think USB devices also have a greater tendency to be problematic than a FireWire equivalent.
I haven't had such problems, but then I always unmount external drives if they are not being used.
Take a look at this Apple document for more info.

  • 10.7.5 Have to Force Eject Ext USB Drive After Sleep

Macbook Pro, Late 2011 (USB 2)
I'm finding that I always have to force eject two different 1TB ext USB HDD's after the computer sleeps. Sometimes I think it's even only after the drive spins down for a while.
Most often it's after I let Time Machine backup my laptop overnight.
I thought it was just this drive, until I got a new drive and it has the same problem, though it's not used for backups.
I've been unsuccessful trying to determine what may be using the drive as the eject error states is happening, but maybe that would help me understand if this is a legitimate problem or a bug. Force ejecting has had no noticeable effects, though it makes me extremely nervous on a backup volume. The other disk is a huge sample library that's not written to unless I add samples, so I don't force ejecting that one as much.
In searches for this problem I have only turned up drives that eject spontaneously.
    Thanks for any help.

OK, so a new search in here, not via google, found this:
    sudo lsof /Volumes/{volume name}
    result:
COMMAND PID   USER   FD   TYPE DEVICE SIZE/OFF NODE NAME
    mds      67   root   21r   DIR   14,6      544    2 /Volumes/Backup_1TB
    Finder  152 andrew   55r   DIR   14,6      204   88 /Volumes/Backup_1TB/Backups.backupdb
So it looks like spotlight or finder. I'm not browsing the backup volume, but it looks like it thinks I am. I know there are lots of spotlight issues, too, but I;m not sure if that's the case here.
    I did try:
    mdutil -V /Volumes/Backup_1TB/ -s
    /Volumes/Backup_1TB:
        No index.
    /Volumes/Backup_1TB/Backups.backupdb:
        No index.
So it would appear that spotlight isn't doing anything...

  • How to keep USB powered while in sleep

I've read about people wanting to turn off USB power while in sleep mode. I would like to know how to turn it on so I can charge USB-powered devices without having the system on. I would prefer it to only work while plugged in to A/C power, but won't mind if it's all the time.
No power option under system settings, only "energy saver" and nothing there controlling USB power.

When the system goes to sleep, the I/O controller turns off all outputs. The system has to be on in order for you to power your USB devices.

  • Ext USB interface... adobe 3.0 still lags and drops

    It's killing me!
I have a brand new laptop, with Vista, 4GB ram, (average sound card, I know) with and new External USB sound card/interface (tascam to be exact).
However, even after recording a couple of tracks, no more than 30 seconds long, adobe starts lagging and dropping - making recording useless - as im sure a lot of you know.
Whats the best way to fix this? I thought by buying an Ext USB, I could get rid of the lag/drops etc...
    Thank you,
    danny

It's probably not the laptop itself, but all the background processes that are running on it.  First thing to do is turn off the wireless adapter (with a switch, if the laptop has one) while you are doing any audio work as this can cause spikes in DPC latency.  You can get a tool to check for DPC latency here.
If you do a search for "tweak Vista for audio use", you will come up with a number of hits, including this one from Audio Forums.  Once you have gotten rid of some of the crap off the machine, I bet you have a lot better luck.....

  • Photoshop CS3 improperly removed... Can't be reinstalled

    Ok, so.
I had the BETA of Photoshop CS3 on my computer months ago. It was improperly removed (dragged to the trash), and not I cannot install the Photoshop CS3 Trial. When I go install, it says that it conflicts with Photoshop CS3.
    Can anyone help?

I did exactly what you did and remove the beta version manually over a month ago. It took me over five hours to figure out the following solution. What follows is exactly how I did it, and that part took slightly less then an hour.
    1. You must deactivate (Adobe says any CS3 eg. Bridge application will work) but I was able to reinstall the beta verison and do it with Photoshop. Once that's reinstalled you will get an error message that says you have an expired pass word. I manually changed the date on my computer to April 16, 2007 and much to my surprise I was able to deactivate. Once the deactivation starts you will get a message its working and then its completed.
    2. You then go throught the beta version of uninstall, but thats not all. Photoshop still will not load.
    3. There are a bunch of other programs that Adobe has listed at the bottom almost hidden part of their tech note titled "Manually Remove Photoshop CS3 public beta (MAC OS X)" Only after these programs are also remove will you be able to load CS3.
Finally, for me the beta version was a disaster, for example it really screwed up my abbility to process raw files on any version of Photoshop/

  • Remove a sleep log entry from the Lifelog

Is it possible to somehow remove a sleep log entry from the Lifelog?
I have an incorrect entry messing up my average value so I would like to get rid of it.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

It is possible to remove a single sleep activity. You scroll in the timeline to the activity you like to remove, then press the avatar while it’s sleeping. You will get a pop-up with sleep details for this specific sleep activity, press the trash can symbol and remove this activity.

  • Lost 3 iPod classics to "improper removal."

Three 120 GB iPod Classics have failed to respond when I plug them in, with my Mac Pro telling me they had been improperly removed on last usage. I can't repair them with any of the methods suggested and a total restoration attempt on two has failed. I know know how to remove an iPod and after losing the first one take special care not to jostle either the pod of laptop when connected. It's very frustrating to watch 15,000 songs disappear into the ether, even if most have been backed up on another machine. Not to mention expense. The last two failures came after installing Lion, which is a whole other issue. Ideas?

I used to work at an Apple Store and we were asked about this a lot. The other responses are correct, there is no way to track an ipod by Serial Number. The SN isn't recorded when you download items from the itunes store, that goes by your user account.
Now, if the person who has your ipod sets up an itunes user account (and doesn't lie about their information - don't forget you can go to the store and buy an itunes giftcard and it won't require a credit card to make a purchase) and also registers the ipod under their name (and doesn't lie about their information) there MIGHT be a way for Apple to track it down. But, honestly, that involves a lot of work and the assumption that the new user hasn't faked any of their personal information. Do you think they're going to do that for you? Probably not.
Sorry about your loss but all the SN is good for on an ipod is tracking warranty and repair information.

  • Removing USB wakes computer from sleep.

I just bought a new monitor to use with my PowerBook. The monitor is a Dell with built in USB plugs. The problem is that when i put the computer to sleep, the monitor(like almost all monitors) goes in to a "power-save" mode (where it doesnt display anything on the screen and the power LED turns orange, wakes when mouse is shaken) And when it does this, it stops giving power to the USB plugs built into it and instatly wakes the computer as if i had pulled out a plug. Is there a way to keep the PowerBook from waking if a USB plug is removed/looses power? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Check under *Keyboard & Mouse* in preferences. Mine is a wireless bluetooth mighty mouse and it's under Bluetooth I don't have a USB mouse but from this article there may not be a switch for turning the wake up off.

  • Problems with usb / sd removable devices (not/badly copying)

    Hi everybody
the problem is when I plug an usb stick or a SD card, all with FAT32 fs, GNOME (I use gnome-shell) asks me if I want to mount and open the device.
so, it loads properly and when it's open I can do all the things you are supposed to do with them.
The issue first appaired when I copied some pics to an SD card. It appaired the progress bar saying it completed the copy process.
So I umounted the device and removed it. Some other people said that actually there weren't any files in the SD card.
Supposing it was bad/corrupted fs I formatted the card and put back the images there. Same issue. I was starting to think the SD card was damaged
until I had the same problem while copying music to my phone (via USB cable).
I noticed it created all the files but didn't store any actual data (e.g. size of files was always 0 byte) or even didn't do anything (neither created the file) sometimes.
Searching the web I found that it wasn't syncing - so they told me to do the sync command on the shell - nothing solved.
So as I read on the wiki [fstab], I mounted the devices with options "sync, flush", which in fact solved the problem.
[Actually I later found that it works even without the flush option, just with the sync option]
Doing so I solved the problem and could copy all the data to the devices.
What I want to know is: how can I say to GNOME (or anyother GNOME uses to mount devices) "well, whenever I put a removable device, mount it with the sync option" ?
    thank you in advance,
    azzka
PS: [not so important]: I noticed very slow copying bitrate, and I did what the wiki says about but didn't solve anything. Any ideas?

    Yep HV,
Verify the discs in the disc utility and see if that works. It'll probably take an hour or so cos the disc utility's performance has been less than favorable.
Try this: Turn off the computer, disconnect the drives, then restart the computer. Now, re-connect the drives while the computer is running, let them mount and see if you can eject them. One would assume it is a permissions issue, however, with the multitude of glitches appearing with ext drives and USB devices in Leopard it's hard to assume anything.

  • External USB drive goes to sleep, iPhoto complains when it try's to access it and exits

I moved my iPhoto to an external USB Harddrive and everything at first worked fine.  Now I get these errors sometimes "Your iPhoto Library is missing".  iPhoto will exit and when you start it again everything is fine.  What I think is happening is the external USB drive has gone to sleep due to inactivity.  Is there a setting in OS X that I can control this with ?  I ugly hack would be to set up a cron job to do a ls of the root external USB drive every 15min.  Is there a special feature that you should look for when buying an external USB drive ?  It is very iratating to get these messages from iPhoto and iTunes.
    Thanks

Check your System/Energy Saver preference pane and and make sure this checkbox is unchecked.

  • Using NI-VISA to detect USB insertion/removal

Is there a way to use NI-VISA to detect when a USB device has been inserted or removed?
I am currently using Windows API in my LabWindows application to capture the WM_DEVICECHANGE event.  When this event is called, I check to see if the USB devices are still connected to my PC  by using viFindRsrc function.  On Windows XP 32-bit, this approached worked successfully.  On my Windows 7 64-bit system this is no longer working.  After I remove the USB device, the viFindRsrc function is still indicating that the device is connected even though it isn't.
Also, when a USB device is controlled by a NI-VISA driver, I cannot capture the Windows DBT_DEVICEARRIVAL and DBT_DEVICEREMOVECOMPLETE events.  I am able to see these events for other USB devices that are not controlled by a NI-VISA driver.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    I solved the issue.
The behavior of the NI-VISA driver requires that you register to receive Windows notifications. The other USB devices that weren't controlled by a NI-VISA driver didn't require me to register to receive the DBT_DEVICEARRIVAL and DBT_DEVICEREMOVECOMPLETE events.  I received them by default...
Here is the code to register USB events
Here is the code where I register the USB events:

  • G-raid drives eject "improperly" when computer sleeps

I've had this problem off and on over the years, but it seems to have come back recently with the installation of Yosemite.
I have a Macbook Pro and a Thunderbolt display. The drives are attached to the firewire port on the computer.

    Hey,
When your computer goes to sleep it usually closes the usb connections because they draw power. Try going into energy saver and check the box next to "prevent computer from automatically sleeping when display is off" I hope that helps.

  • How to set an attached USB drive to automatic sleep using Airdisk?

    Greetings all!
I am looking for a way to set my two USB drives to sleep when they are not being used. I only use them a few minutes a day, and don't want to run them down or use the electricity to keep them spinning.
It seems there has been some discussion about this but I haven't been able parse all the conversations. Some people seem to have gotten it to work, while others are relying on a drives "internal" mechanisms. It would be great if someone (perhaps at Apple?) could chime in with an overview of the problem.
Perhaps it is linked to the method of authentication - ie., (using Airport Utility 5.1), whether the Disks > File Sharing > "Secure Shared Disks" > is with "disk password" or another method?
Some have suggested a radio button for a future firmware/other update such as:
"Set drives to sleep when not in use" (Let's hope for this!), but I am hoping for a simple solution in the near future.
    Any thoughts out there?
    best to all.

    Hello Andy,
    Thanks for your reply.
    1. For using Microsoft Outlook rules, we need to keep the computer on, even after work or the colleague is on leave. That is not allowed in my company.
    2. For sending an auto-reply email based on subject, that is impossible because the emails from customers are different and we don't have a basic standard.
    3. Could you please elaborate how to set a transport rule in Exchange server to achieve the goal?
    Thanks a lot in advance.
    Steven
    1. Only client rules require that the Outlook client remain open. An auto-reply rule should be server-side, so no need to leave Outlook open.
    2. Yep!
    3. Walk through the hub transport rules and you see one that replies with a rejection code. Thats the best you can get with a hub transport rule and not something I would recommend in your scenario. You could also search around for 3rd party solutions.
