EXT2 or EXT3 on Linux for 10g?
Would EXT2 file system (Linux) be more appropriate for 10G datafiles since journal is essentially done by Oracle itself through redo logs and archived logs?
What's your experience with different file systems?
Same question for flash recovery area?
Hi mishomor
I would advice you to use ext3 as it has journalizing.

Hardening Linux for Oracle 10g
I have been working on creating a bare-bones RHEL 5 installation which will act as an Oracle 10g database server. For hardening Linux, I have restricted to a bare minimum of packages to make it more secure. This installation did not have X-Windows, Gnome/KDE and a host of other services that will not be required on Production servers. I selected only the BASE installation which was further customized to include just the following (there is scope to trim this further, so feedback is welcome):
NetworkManager
readahead
smartmontools
yum-updatesd
irqbalance
acpid
crash
cryptsetup-luks
dos2unix
dump
finger
gnugpg
ksh
libaio
logwatch
m2crypto
man-pages
mdadm
nano
numactl
openssh-clients
openssh-servers
pam_ccreds
pam_krb5
pam_passwdqc
sendmail
setuptools
stunnel
sudo
symlinks
system-config-network
tree
unix2dos
unzip
vconfig
wget
which
yum
yum-rhn-plugin
yum-security
zip
Since I do not intend to use nfs, nis, samba – associated packages were not included. Further hardening was achieved by deleting non-required services (kudzu, avahi, gpm, atd, netfs, ip6tables).
The challenge comes when I begin setting up Oracle 10g using the oracle validated rpm method. In an attempt to resolve dependencies, YUM ends up installing 70 packages that do not apparently seem to have anything to do with an RDBMS (sound libraries, Gnome, X libraries and tools etc.). For me the libraries/binaries required for linking appear to be justified but the rest appear to be installed only for the Installer.
This package addition also ends up installing gamin which provides the gam_server which has bugs in it that lead to > 90% CPU consumption.
I further tried erasing some of the packages to see if anything broke. Till now nothing is broken and the database is running fine. Till now I have removed:
gamin
gamin-python
gnome-mount
gnome-vfs2
libbonoboui
libgnome
libgnomeui
oracle-validated
yum-updatesd
esound
hicolor-icon-theme
GConf2
gnome-keyring
gtk2
libglade2
libgnomecanvas
libnotify
libwnck
notification-daemon
audiofile
cups-libs
gnome-mime-data
cairo
pango
My questions:
• How have you created a production/hardened Linux based Oracle installation?
• Can you share your experiences in hardening Linux for Oracle and deploying the Oracle 10g RDBMS without installing the scores of packages which themselves might compromise the server?
• What exactly is the dependency for the Oracle 10g RDBMS on X11, Gnome, Gamin and graphic libraries such as Cairo and Pango (to name a few)?
• Which Linux system services are really mandatory for Oracle?
• Does a non-default secure installation compromise Oracle support?
The current memory footprint for this setup (without any workload) is (figures in MB):
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 1010 458 552 0 19 377
-/+ buffers/cache: 61 949
Swap: 2047 0 2047
…of this 290 MB belongs to Oracle ☺
I will be working with the other route – without using the oracle-validated rpm.
Please let me have your feedback.
BR
AniruddhaHi,
I'll paste the rpm -qa of a RHEL5 server I have installed through rpm -ivh (not yum at all)

How to Install Oracle 11g on Linux for Power?
I've installed RedHat Enterprise Linux 5.4 on IBM PowerPC server.
Now I want to install Oracle 11g on it. But there are no Oracle 11g downloads for Linux for Power.
Is there any workaround so Oracle 11g can be installed on Linux on Power?Hi,
I think you can forget it. Oracle 10g R2 was the last version supported on Linux PowerPC.
Cheers,
David

[solved] How to convert fs from ext2 to ext3 on root partition?
Hello there!
Edit: It seems that the plan works! apparently it worked for alleyoopster also on a mounted fs.
As the title says, I want to convert my fs on / from ext2 to ext3. After some research I think I know what
to do, but want to make sure that I don't mess anything up....
So here is the plan:
boot with an install disc and leave the root partition unmounted (I know that in theory the conversion should
work on a mounted fs, but it feels awkward to me and I want to avoid it....).
Then use the
tune2fs -j /dev/xxx
command (the defaults for the forced checks are ok with me). Then reboot with the CD still in place, but use
this time root=/dev/xxx. Then I can change my /etc/fstab (ext3 should have been able to be mounted as ext2 at
the moment). Finally I have to rebuild my initrd image with
mkinitcpio -p kernel26
Then I should be able to boot into my system. And now the question: Can anyone verify that this is a valid approach
and will work? Or knows a better way to do it?
I'm grateful for any input
Last edited by alafanky (2007-11-26 15:41:35)Have a look at the man for tune2fs and mkinitcpio
man tune2fs
man mkinitcpio
I am looking at doing the same and as far as I can figure out it goes like this, BUT this is not a proven method just what I am thinking of doing, Maybe someone else can correct or add to this or confirm that it will work.
1. Add journal parameter like this:
tune2fs -j /dev/sda1
2. Change the partition type from ext2 to ext3 in /etc/fstab
3. For a standard kernel re-create ramdisk with preset parameters (no good for custom kernel)
mkinitcpio -p kernel26
As the system is mounted it will create the journal inode in the top level, don't delete this, it will get hidden into the filesystem on reboot.
Let me know if you make some progress. I may get brave and try it later.
So in answer, yes pretty much the same but I think you can do it with the fs mounted.

hi,
The OCI method, OCISessionBegin() is throwing an core dump on 10g client in Linux on C++, but the same code works fine for 8i and 9i client. Core dumps for 10g Client. 10g tnsnames.ora file is same as of 9i. I just debeggued with the core and says failing in OCISessionBegin() method. I would like to know is there any problem with Oracle Client v10.2.0.2? or how does i can solve the issue? appriciate a quick help in this regard.
Thanks,
SreeniHave you looked in the Knowledge Base information at metalink? That would be the place to start.
If that does not work then the next step would be to remove this thread and post in the OCI - OCCI forum where there are people that can actually help you. -
Oracle 11g on Linux for Power?
Hi All,
Does Oracle today has support for Oracle 11g on Linux for Power?
I couldn't find it from the website, only has Oracle 10gR2..
Please advice..
Thank you..

First Solution Sdn BhdJust found Oracle Support document 1310584.1, last updated August 5, 2011:
Says:
Oracle will not be releasing Oracle Database 11g on IBM Linux on Power systems. Customers can continue to run the terminal patch set of Oracle Database 10g Release 2 (10.2.0.5)....
Extended Support is offered through July 21, 2013
Limited Extended Support offered until July 31, 2015
Hope this helps.
Matt -
Is there a chance for 10g this week?
Well, is there a chance to get the 10g Database for Linux this week?? Oracle said 10g Software will be out this year... that would be great because I am on holidays at the moment and this is exactly the very correct time to learn...
I was talking to an Oracle rep last month and I joshed them about this. Basically, Oracle perceives no great demand from its customers for the 10G database. There are a lot of customers out there who are still running 8i (consider the posters to this site): if these people haven't made the transition to 9i in the last two years they are hardly likely to be gagging for 10g.
Oracle have released the 10G software for which there is customer demand - App Server (because 9iAS is a bag of spanners) and JDev (because Java is a fast moving environment and there's lots of new, sought-after functionality in the new version).
But Oracle's database software, even at 8i, is both highly stable and richly featured. The introduction of Regular Expressions and the MODEL clause for SQL might excite us technical types but it's not much of a business case. Apparently most of the companies that want the self-managing functionality are in the Beta test and so have it already.
In short, 10G database is unlikely to see the light of day before the end of February.
Cheers, APC -
Certification Info for 10g/11g Discoverer - Metalink ID 233047.1
All,
I referenced the metalink ID ID 233047.1, for certification Information regarding 10g and 11g Discoverer. Can someone please confirm if the following is true? The information in this link is really confusing and I greatly appreciate your help in this regard.
Discoverer Admin and Desktop 10g --> No, will not work on Windows 7 and IE9.
Discoverer Plus and Viewer 10g --> Yes, for Windows 7, and No for IE9. Will work with Windows 7 and IE8. It does NOT talk about IE9. (Metalink ID: [ID 233047.1]). This is what concerns me.
******Will Discoverer Plus and Viewer 10g work with IE9?**********
Discoverer Admin and Desktop 11g --> Yes, will work with Windows 7 and IE9
Discoverer Plus and Viewer 11g --> Yes, will work with Windows 7 and IE9
Discoverer Admin and Desktop 11g ---> **** Will this work with Windows XP? *****
Discoverer Plus and Viewer 11g --> ****** Will this work with IE8? *******
Thanks!
PriyaDanny,
We are planing to do 11g Discoverer upgrade from 10.1.2 with 11i apps on Unix,I believe it is only certified on Linux for Oracle Apps 11i.
Discoverer 11g (11.1.1.3) Certified with E-Business Suite
http://blogs.oracle.com/stevenChan/2010/07/discoverer_11g_11113_ebs.html
Discoverer 11g (11.1.1.2) Certified with E-Business Suite
http://blogs.oracle.com/stevenChan/2010/03/discoverer_11g_11112_ebs.html
Can you one give me some more insight information about upgrade process,I would like to know how compatible it , I gone through some metalink notes, but its not very much clear to me
Using Discoverer 11.1.1 with Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i [ID 1073963.1]If you are on Unix, do not upgrade for now. If you are on Linux, please mention what steps are not clear to you.
Thanks,

Thank you for your help on this issue.+OK, I did this once and did not follow the oracle docs
If you saved your targets.xml before you started you might save it by renaming it back.
(Double check to make sure you did not miss a rename)
Otherwise, all I have to offer is my rough notes:
1. Backup the file $ORACLE_HOME/sysman/emd/targets.xml.
[oracle@ias02 emd]$ pwd
/u01/app/oracle/product/midtier/sysman/emd
cp targets.xml targets.xmlbackup
2. Modify the file targets.xml by changing all the occurrences of the wrong reports server name by the correct one.
i.e. Replace rep_test_midtier with rep_new (4 places - changes)
Copy the conf file as follows: ( this will named different from system to system )
cp /u01/app/oracle/product/midtier/reports/conf/rep_pia_oracleas.conf /u01/app/oracle/product/midtier/reports/conf/rep_fam.conf
run this script:
/u01/app/oracle/product/midtier/bin/addNewServerTarget.sh rep_fam (change rep_fam to new report server name)
3.Update the changed configuration .
/u01/app/oracle/product/midtier/dcm/bin/dcmctl updateconfig -ct opmn -v -d
/u01/app/oracle/product/midtier/dcm/bin/dcmctl resyncinstance -v -d
4. Restart the Application Server Control Console
/u01/app/oracle/product/midtier/bin/emctl stop iasconsole
/u01/app/oracle/product/midtier/bin/emctl start iasconsole
In the file:
/u01/app/oracle/product/midtier/reports/config/reportsConfig.properties
Change the Reports_Server_Name setting from rep_test_midtier to rep_fam (change rep_fam to new report server name)
Best Wishes (I was able to save mime)
The other option is to reinstall -
Enterprise manager console for 10g.
How do I get enterprise manager console for 10g? I installed 10g on my machine awhile ago and just noticed that enterprise manager console was not installed with it. When I installed Oracle 9 a while back, the console was installed automatically.
DB Control Repository is needed to run EM. To create it you can use emca or dbca command.

Problem setting up DSN for 10g ODBC driver
Hello,
I am simply trying to install an ODBC driver for 10g. To accomplish this, I first downloaded the odbc driver for 10g 10.2.0.2.0. The Readme notes said that I need to install the odbc driver using the Oracle Universal Installer. So I got a copy of just the OUI from our DBA. I installed the OUI 10.2. Using the installer, I installed the 10.2.0.2.0 odbc driver. The Readme notes said to look for the file "products.jar", which was not available, but "products.xml" was, so I used "products.xml", and the driver installed successfully.
The next step was to set up an ODBC DSN for this driver. When I attempted to do this, the Microsoft ODBC Administrator threw this message: The setup routines for the Oracle in DEFAULT_HOME ODBC driver could not be loaded due to system error code 127, followed by Could not load the setup of translator library.
Other threads suggested that I copy the DLLs mfc71.dll, msvcrt.dll, and msvcr71.dll from my C:\Windows\System32 directory to the directory where I installed the odbc driver (C:\orant\BIN) and to ensure that this directory path was defined under the PATH environmental variable. I followed all these instructions but to no avail - I am still having the same problem. PLEASE HELP!!! Thanks in advance!!Hi,
>>could not be loaded due to system error code 127
Did you try install it on other machine ? Maybe this current machine has a DLL versions problems ...

Configure ODBC to access a CSV file on Linux for access from BI Server
How to configure an ODBC connection to a CSV file on Linux for access from the BI Server Repository physical layer
I am migrating a working windows OBIEE installation to Linux and can not seem to connect to csv files on Linux (from th BI server also running on the same Linux machine).
I am using SUse Linux Enterprise server / 10 (Slash 10) standard odbc drivers
My odbc ini file entries are:

The csv files I want to use are in the directory /data/oracle/OracleBIData/idc to which I have set up a working and checked connection ([idcbicsvfiles]) on the linux machine itself.
The error message I get when I select view data in the physcial layer is:
[NQODBC][SQL_STATE: HY000][nQSError: 10058] A general error has occurred.
[nQSError: 43093] An error occurred while processing the EXECUTE PHYSICAL statement.
[nQSError: 16023] The ODBC function has returned ans error. The database may not be available, or the network may be down.
Please can anybody give me a clue on how to get this working e.g. a working odbc.ini file from your own installation (and/or a tip for the odbc driver choice/configuration)
P.S. I know this is not supported by Oracle but can not imagine, that nobody is using this.Hi,

Configuring Oracle Text for 10g
Hello,
Sorry, it this sounds like such a newbie question, but is there is a simple guide to the basic configuration and setup of Oracle Text for 10g?
Thank you for your help.Hi,
Check out note 280713.1. You can verify your install and install manually if necessary.
If you haven't done anything with the db (created schemas/objects) it might actually be easiest to simply delete the db and create a new one. Just make sure when you do that you select 'custom' from the list of templates and then choose Oracle Text as one of the options.
Thanks,
