Extenal Hard Drives and ipods

Hey,
Lately my ibook is not recognizeing my ipod, my wifes ipod or my two external hard drives...the problems started when I was trying to share a external hard drive with a PC (instead of a nice closed mac system). Anyway I get power from my USB and Firewire but they don't come up in finder, or itunes or anything. Everything used to come up fine...help

Generally, it helps to power down and unplug everything from receptacles for ten minutes or so, then one by one power up. Provides a reset.

• Music stored on external hard drive and iPod no longer displayed in iTunes

I have all of my music stored on a portable external hard drive. For some reason, when I last booted up my computer the drive name from the external hard drive changed from F:\ to G:\. Unfortunately the source for all the music was linked to the F:. Now the iTunes doesn't know where the music is. I have tried to consolidate the library, but it didn't work. And now nothing is showing up in my iTunes. But all of my music is still stored on the external hard drive and the iPod. Any suggestions?

Close itunes, go into windows disk mgmt and set the drive letter back to F:
When you re-open itunes it should be back to normal.

• Hard Drive and IPod Crash at the same time

My hard drive crashed. I had some of the music backed up but not some recent itunes purchases. Also, my Ipod Mini died so I replaced it with the IPod video 30 gig version. Is there any way I can recover the music that I have already paid for? I go to check purchases and it asks for my Apple ID. My apple ID was the serial number of my dead Ipod mini, which I don't have any more and of course don't remember. How can I find out what my Apple ID was for the music I purchased? Some of those purchases are on my Ipod video so can I sink them back into my hard drive, or does Itunes overwrite everything in the Ipod? Thanks for your help.

• Music stored on hard drive and iPod

Question (and Im new, so be gentle, please!):
Do I have to have all those tunes stored on my hard disk to use them on the ipod, or after Ive copied the songs to the ipod, can I free up my hard disk by deleting the music from the HD??
Thanks!
Acer Aspire laptop Windows XP

just a note.
i would not delete the songs. i have had 6 iPods (just buying one, i just kept swapping it out) and every time you get a new ipod or if you have to restore it for some reason, you would have to get those CD's.
Best thing to do is get an external hard drive (doesnt have to be big at all, just big enough for the music and any more you might add. 250gb will be definatly big enough.) and move your music to that. Then just leave it plugged into your computer and you can listen to that music through iTunes, or just bring it out and plug it in if you need to reload that music.
Also, then you can have a back up for your important documents, photos, and you are essentially making your computer bigger. Watch the ads in the stores. They weekly go on big sales

• External hard drive and ipod

I recently moved my ipod library from my desktop to my laptop where I now sync my ipod and get any upgrades. However, I have noticed a significant decrease in the rate of my computer. I'm considering purchasing an external hard drive to store my music library and remove it all from my laptop. Is it possible to still sync my ipod with the laptop and external hard drive connected containing all of my music? Sorry, I'm not computer savvy but not totally illiterate.

Hi
This isnt an answer to your question but you might be able to help me! I have previously been using my ipod on my desktop and have recently changed to laptop. I have downloaded Itunes on there and have bought from itunes store and uploaded some CD's. When it comes to connecting my ipod it wont let me sync without deleting everything that is on my ipod already!!?? I dont suppose you know how i can get around it do you?

• Importing music into iTunes is taking up a lot of space on both my hard drive and iPod.

Is there a way to make the files smaller?

It is possible that Windows wasn't able to calculate the correct size and decided to show some random (?) number instead.
Such issues have been reported in the past.
You can check these locations to be sure as you may have multiple files in the Firefox Profile Folder

You can find the location of the cache on the about:cache page.
You can open about: pages via the location bar like you open a website.

• Windows 7 and iTunes doens't recognise iPod Classic 80g after wipe clean hard drive and format fat32.

My iPod Classic 80gb every now-and-then goes funny, and eventually iTunes doesn't recognise it. In the past I could put it on disk mode, and do a reset, but some times I would have to format (FAT32), uninstall and reinstall iTunes, so it would work. Now it happened again, this time wiped clean the hard drive and formatted. However windows 7 and iTunes still doesn't recognise it. Tried many tips online but nothing works. All software I have used don't see the hard drive, so can't format it again.
I can get it on disk mode but even then windows and iTunes don't recognise it. When connecting to laptop my machine goes boiling hot. Left it connected with iTunes on for few hours but still no luck.
Any suggestions?

Hello @turingtest2.
Following your threat I realized it was time to have my hard drive changed. My iPod classic has a Samsung Model: HS081HA, 80gb/3600 rpm (real hard to get it open and check out!!!).
My question is if I DO HAVE to buy exactly the same hard drive, or I could get away with another manufacturer and model, such as Toshiba (80 GB MK8009GAH FOR iPod Video 5th 5.5th iPod Classic 6.5th 7th Gen Hard Drive - Ebay listing)?
I ask you that as these Toshiba hard drives are considerably cheaper.
Help much appreciated.

• Using the new ipod touch as a hard drive and so enabling indexing

Hi,
is it possible to mount the ipod touch as a hard drive and then search this using spotlight.
I have the 5 th generation ipod at the mo and after enabling indexing I can search this using spotlight.
Cheers,
Steve

How do you tell your computer to see your iPod touch as a drive?
You can't from within iTunes with the iPod touch. You have to use third-party App such as:

http://www.itunes.com/App/AirSharing

• I upgraded my hard drive and my ipod no longer recognizes my computer. It will not sync. What should I do?

I upgraded my hard drive and my ipod no longer recognizes my computer. It will not sync. What should I do?

- First get iTunes to see the iPod:
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
- The transfer iTunes purchases to the computer:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer
- For non-iTunes purchased music you need a third-party program like one of those discussed here:
Copy music from Ipod to new computer...: Apple Support Communities
- Connect the iPOd to the computer and make a backup by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up
- Restore the iPod from that backup.

I recently had to replace my hard drive and lost my iTunes library. When I try to transfer the content from my iPod to iTunes on the new hard drive (same computer), it would only let me transfer iTunes store purchases. How can I complete the transfer of all the content on the iPod back onto the computer?

I have a pc running vista and the hard drive crashed how can i transfer my songs from Ipod nano 5th gen to my new hard drive and into itunes

Right click on your device in the device list and choose "transfer purchses" to copy all music bought in iTunes to your new iTunes library.
For all other media you'll have to use 3rd party software, examples are mentioned in this thread:

• New hard drive and old ipod

I lost my hard drive (and no I hadn't backed up my music files). Is there any way for me to transfer music from my ipod to my PC?

1). Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod.
2). When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you continue to use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
3). Once you are connected and your iPod is safely in manual mode there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. iTunes will only let you copy your purchases directly from an iPod to the computer, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
For everything else (including purchases) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:
Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
Comparison of iPod managers
A selection of iPod to iTunes utilities:
TuneJack Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
SharePod Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod2PC Windows Only
iDump Windows Only
YamiPod Mac and Windows
iPod Music Liberator Mac & Windows
Floola Mac & Windows
iPodRip Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Music Liberator Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
Music Rescue Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iGadget Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
4). Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.
5). I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

• External Hard Drive and Computer NOT recognizing IPod

Can anyone please help me? I purchased an external hard drive to store all my songs instead of on my internal hard drive. I change the location of all my songs to the external hard drive and even import any new song there as well. But when I connect my IPod to my computer to update and import my new songs, my computer DOES NOT recognize the IPod. The only way my computer will recognize my IPod is if I disconnect my external drive first and then connect my IPod. But then I cannot import or update my IPod. This is driving me nuts. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Anyone find a solution for this yet??? I'm having a similar problem. I have an external drive but my tunes are on a partitioned drive on the internal. The external is off but when I go to enable disk use it keeps turning it off on me. When I have selected manually sync songs then it tells me that disk cannot be read from or written to. The computer never shows a drive for the ipod. This is really getting on my nerves!
