Extend a MAXDB database.

Hi,
Is there a way I can extend my existing Datafiles of a maxDB database (version 7.6)
I know about the auto_extend parameter, but that will create additional datafiles for the DB, while I am only interested to enlarge the existing datafiles.

You can add/remove data volumes online while the database is fully operational.
Since backups are not taken on a file basis it simply doesn't matter what files there are at recoery time.
What's important is just that there is enough free space available, regardless if this space is stored in one or ten files.
When you drop a data volume MaxDB also removes the file from the filesystem, so you don't have to manually do anything on filesystem level.

(remark to my person:
I'm certified OS/DB migration consultant and have already done over 500 OS/DB migrations since 1995 successfully)
BUT now I'm face with following setup for Export:
HP- IA64 BL870c, 4 CPUu2019s Dual-Core + Hyperthreading activ (mean's 16 "CPU'S" shown via top or glance)
64 GB RAM, HPUX V11.31;
MAXDB 7.7.07
ECC 5.0; Basis/Aba 640.22
SAP-Kernel 640-Unicode Patch 381
8 sapdatas are configured on unique 200GB LUN's and VG's in HP-UX; on storage-side the 8 220GB LUN's are located on (only) 9 300GB-Disks with Raid-5 Level and within HP-UX each VG/LVOL is mirrored via LVM to a second desasterdatacenter (200m distance)
LOGFILES:
2 x 4 GB LUN Raid-1 on Storage and via LVM also mirrored to failover-center
MAXDB-Datasize: 1600 GB Overall and within this 1350 GB used, TEMPUsage about 25 GB !
MAXDB-Parameter-Settings
MAXCPUu2019s 10 (4 x IA64 QuadCore+Hyperthreading shows 16 Cores within top and galcne
Cache_SIZE= I/O Buffer Cache = 16 GB (2.000.000 Pages)

the following sapnote for MAXDB Peformance and Migrations are well known and already processes

My major problem is the export-runtime with over 4 days on the first dry-run (6 R3load's running on Linux-APPL-Server), and 46h on second runtime, 6 R3loads running on DB-Server IA64)
the third trail-run was aborted by me after 48hours and 50% export-dump-space was written. In all 3 dry-runs, no more than approx 3.5GB DUMP-Space were written per hour!
My first question to all MAXDB-Guru'S: How can I influence/optimize the TEMP - Area in MAXDB?? I didn't find any hint's in SDN or SAPNOTES or MaxDB Wiki or google....As fare as I know, this TEMP area "resides" within MAXDB-datafiles, thus it's seperated on my 48 datafiles, spreaded over 8 LUN/VG/disks. But I see LESS throughput on disk's and MAXDB-Kernel uses only ONE of ten's cpu-cores (approx 80% - 120% of 1000%).
The throughput or cpu-usage doesn't change when I use 2 or 4 or 10 or 16 R3load' processes in parallel. The "result" is always the same: approx. 3,5 GB Export-Dump and 1 CPU MAX-DB Kernelprocess is used !
so the BIG Question for me: WHERE is the bottleneck ?? (RAID-5 Disk-LUNS mirrored with LVM ???)
on HP-UX scsi_queue_depth_length I'v increased default value from 8 to 32 to 64 to 128 --> no impact
2nd question:
I'v read OS-Note 1327874 - FAQ: SAP MaxDB Read Ahead/Prefetch, and we are running MAXDB 7.7.07.19! (MaxDB 7.8 is not suppored via PAM for IA64 640-UC-Kernel) and as far as I understood, this parameter will no HELP me on EXPORT with primary-key-sequence ! is this correct? THUS: which parameter HELPS for speeding up Export-Runtime?
MAXCPU is set to 10, but ONLY 1 of them is used??
so this post is for ALL MAXDB GURU'S!
who will be intrested to contriubte on this "high-sophisticated" migration-project with 1.5TB MAXDB-Database-size and ONLY 24h Downtime !!
all tips and hints are welcome and I will give us coninued updates to this running project until WE did a successfull migration job.
PS: Import is not yet started, but should be done within vSphere 5 and SLES 11 SP1 on MAXDB 7.8 ....and of yours in parallel to export with migration monitor, BUT again a challenge: 200km distance from source to traget system !!!

nice project ... just some simple questions:
Did you open a message at SAP? Maybe you could buy some upgrade support, this could be usefull to get direct access to the SAP support...
Which byte order do you use? I know Itanium could use both. But it should be different, otherwise you would use a backup for the migration.
And the worst question, I do not even want to ask: What about your MAXCPUS parameter? Is it set to more than 1? This could be the problem why only one CPU is used.

Database selection with invalid cursor with MaxDB database

"Database selection with invalid cursor
The database interface was called by a cursor (in a FETCH or CLOSE
cursor operation) that is not flagged as opened. This can occur if a
COMMIT or ROLLBACK was executed within a SELECT loop (which closes all
opened cursors), followed by another attempt to access the cursor (for
example, the next time the loop is executed)."
We are using bw support package 19 early this month. Previously is working fine but this problem occured from the last 2 days.
We are using MaxDB database.

We finally resolved the issue.
The solution:
We check the RFC connection test in SM59. There are connection error.
There is an error that related J2EE_ADMIN user.
SO we reset the J2EE_ADMIN id in SU01.
The problem goes away.

And when I said changing between DB's I was meaning the two MAXDB databases that exist on my system. I assume that the E&A stuff is stored in the DB3 (in my case) MAXDB database, no? I just test against the MAXDB1 database to be sure that I was not pointing to the wrong database. And because both are MAXDB databases, the proc's are the same.

Not able to start MaxDB database.

While creating other blank MaxDB database and we changed some permissions on /sapdb...Now we are not able to revert back those original permissions for the files in /sapdb.
While starting the MaxDB database i am getting error as below,

I am not able to find the option you told to select "When you then call SDBINST out of this
package, make sure that you select the profile 'all' in the first
dialogue."
I tried selecting the option 2 i.e. Client as reinstall option it has resolved the software problem now it shows as Valid. But still it shows the database kernel status as invalid how to correct the same.

Using MaxDB database manager via SAP::DBTech::dbm Perl module

Hi,
we would like to use the SAP::DBTech::dbm module to access the MaxDB database manager with perl.
The MaxDB 7.7 doc states that the module is a component of the MaxDb software but I cannot find the perl includes.
Does anybody know how to install or configure the module?
In the MaxDB Installation I found in the file /sapdb/<SID>/db/doc/FirstSteps/Perl/HowToPerl.html that one has just to
include the c:\programme\sdb\maxdb1/misc folder to $PERL5LIB. The folder exits but just contains the files to create and drop the demo database.

as far as I understand your question, you'd like to automate the installation for your end-users.
In the end it's a local installation where one user works with his/her Database Studio installation - correct?
If it would be possible to add the end users to the user group 'SDB Operators' they should be able to create the user management database and Database Studio should work.

the other way around should be possible. In case your MaxDB Studio is based on eclipse juno or kepler it should work.
You find this info in the menu under Help->About Eclipse

Unable to connect to MaxDB database

I am trying to connect to MaxDB database to create repository in MDM console.

I have checked the server log file, I found the error is mentioned below:
Error: Service 'Host name', User 'SAPMDMDB', Schema 'SAPMDMDB' Connect failed
ERROR CODE=-10709, Connection failed (RTE:[5] database not running)
I have checked in the services the MAXDB:MDM and MAXDB: .UMDB are running and these are set to Startup type property as "Automatic".
besides i found other services related to MaxDB(MAXDB: MDM(slow), MAXDB: .M770401, MAXDB: .M770401 (slow) , MAXDB: .M770428) are not running and these are set to startup type property as "Manual"
Please let me know if you have idea about this.

( Urgent)Maxdb Database is in Offline STATE

We got SAP Content Server with MaxDB on Suse Linux. It is production database. After rebooting the database is gone in offline state, when we are trying to change offline state to online state with DBM GUI we are getting following error.
1. DBM gui hangs when we trying to connect Database.
2. some time's get connected , but the database is in offline state .
3.when we are trying to change offline state to online , we got the error "knldiag gone in to admin before restart at o/s level ant the error 1000.
it's very critical , please we need help on this
