Extend a WRT54G connecting a MSI RG54GS2

I own a WRT54G that is actually connected to a ADSL modem and been working fine for about a year.
I have a spare Router (MSI RG54GS2) and would like to use it to extend WRT54G's range without installing (if possible) DD-WRT.
Is there a way to hook up those 2 routers wirelessly?
This is the MSI router's page:
http://latam.msi.com/spanish/products/detail_spec/RG54GS2_spa.htm (sorry it's in spanish, but I couldn't find the english page).
Thanks in advance
Lord Vader

You cannot communicate both the router's wirelessly...You have to use non-linksys firmware communicate both the router's wirelessly(DD-WRT)...

Problem setting up WDS with WR850g & MSI RG54GS2
    Hi,
    I'm trying to bridge 2 routers: Motorola WR850g & MSI RG54GS2 .
I set the MSI as the main router (it works better for me as a router than the Moto), and the Moto is the repeater. I have set it up exactly as the guide on Broadbandreports.com for the Motorola , and on Tom's Networking http://www.tomsnetworking.com/2004/04/14/how_to_wds_bridge/
The Moto sees the MAC of the MSI (Status is UP), the MSI doesn't have a page that shows WDS MACs . I know the routers are connected because when I connect a laptop to the Moto wireless network, it gets an IP (and the DHCP on the Moto is disabled) and the default gateway of the connection is the IP of the main (MSI) router.
The problem is I can't surf anywhere. I can't even ping the MSI router - which should be possible if the WDS works properly. The Moto Wireless Bridge Operation is set properly to Access Point/Wireless Bridge .
    Can anyone solve this?
    Thanks.

    David, welcome to the discussions.
Are you refering to Airport Extreme Setup as the Extreme base.
Or are you using a 3rd party Router as your primary Base, or the Express as the primary base.
Read the supplied link, Not all 3rd party routers are WDS compatible.

Who is you Internet Service Provider?
What brand and Model Modem did they furnish?
    Are you using Dial-Up...DSL...or Cable?

  • MSI RG54GS2 - problem with print server

    Hi,
I have router MSI RG54GS2. Everything works correctly. If I connect printer to USB on router then my router works only 10 hours and then it freezes. If printer is not connected, router works fine without freezing.
I tried to use new firmware, but it doesn't solve my problem.
    What should I do, please?

So, I tried it. Router works correctly without freezing but only via cable :( . If I try to connect via WiFi to my NETWORK, then my notebook and PDA find SSID and that's all. Widows show formular that everithing is connected correctly, but internet and lan network doesn't work. If I disconnected PRITER from router, then noteebok and PDA could connect to internet and local network.
:( I have only trouble with this router :> .

HELP I have a wireless Linksys router WRT54G connected through my cable company broadband modem on a Mac. I have another computer to which I installed wireless capability because it didn't come with it. This required attching some piece of equipment to the back of the PC which enabled it to get on the internet without another cable modem. My question is this. If I get an iphone or a laptop(with built in wireless ability) will I automatically be able to go on the web because of the router on the Mac.

yes certainly... if you get any wireless device in network that would certainly connects to a wireless n/w of router...

Can this be done? Airport extreme connected wireless in extend mode to connect a wireless Mac Pro with an ethernet cable from the extended airport extreme.

This will work.....IF....you also have an Apple AirPort router configured to provide your wireless network.
In other words, you need to have two Apple AirPort routers to extend a wireless network.
When the AirPort Extreme is configured to "extend" the wireless of the "main" AirPort, it will provide more wireless coverage and the Ethernet ports are enabled, so you could connect your Mac Pro to any of the Ethernet ports and use that as a network and Internet connection.

  • WRT54g connected to modem with router

Got a WRT54g connected to a cable modem which acts as a router.  The WRT54g gets an IP address (192.168.1.x) from the cable modem and the WRT54g can ping and tracert to sites on the internet (from the diagnostics page).   The WRT54g is acting as a DHCP server for the 192.168.9.x network and I have the cable modem connected to the WAN port.  (I need to have the cable modem connected to the WAN port b/c I'm using all the ports of the WRT54g.  I want to have the cable modem connected to the wan port too so the network are separate subnets).
Any idea why packets would not be going through the WRT54g?  I've tried setting the router and gateway modes, neither of which work anymore.  I think I used to have it set to router and it work.
    Any thoughts? Suggestions?
    Thanks in Advance.

What network is 192.168.9.x...What other router router you have apart from wrt54g?What is the model number of the other router? What is the exact physical connection between the modem and the routers?

Using the latest firmware. My WRT54GS (connected through a LAN cable) seems to randomely disconnect me from the internet for no apparent reason. For some reason, it can't find the DNS even though my cable modem shows that a connection is there. The only way I can get it working again is unplugging the router, reconnecting the, going into the router status menu and hitting DHCP release, then DHCP renew.
I'm not sure whats causing this though. Any help would be appreciated.

My GSv6  will function perfectly until my cable ISP decides to change my WAN IP address.   When they do that the router will drop internet connection  and I have to go throught the reboot process for the modem and router.  Sometimes this works and all is well again until the next ip change, but other times there are still sporadic outages.

i have a Linksys Wrt54gs connected to a Cable modem.
it worked for about 8 months.
My kid pressed a button by accident and now it won't work.
    the router just keeps resetting.
    i unplugged everything.
conencted 1 computer, and everything is fine.
    Received DHCP address.
Once i plug in a second computer it starts rebooting.
Both computers are set to DHCP.
NO internet connection is connected at this time for troubleshooting purposes.
Nothing is connected to the ethernet port on the Linksys router (port for internet access), only 1 and 2 are connected.
i reset the router and still nothing.
i can connect 1 computer via wireless and 1 computer via direct connection and all is good. Once 2 devices are connected via direct connections it starts resetting.
i can even connect the modem to the router (for internet access), and connect to the linksys router via wireless from my computer and get internet access.
But once i direct connect 2 connections, the router starts resetting.
i have reset and reboot it with every combination i can think of.

Its good that its working now.
If it happens again, try this :
Press the reset button on the router for 30 seconds. The Power light will start flashing. Turn the Router and the Modem OFF. Turn the modem ON first, wait for 10 seconds, turn the router ON, wait for 10 seconds, you should be ONLINE !!!
Do this when the computer os connected to the router with a cable.
than on the computer open Internet Explorer and in the Address Bar type : 192.168.1.1 and hit enter.
It'll ask for the password. The default password is admin.
Once in the setup page. Click on the Wireless tab.
In there Change the Network Mode to mixed. And change the SSID to your name.
Change the Channel to 11. And Enable the SSID Broadcast.
Save the settings here. After that Click on Wireless Security and configure it accordingly and Save the settrings.
Than click on Advanced Wireless Settings. In there Disable the SES function.
What is the firmware on the router ?

  • Bt signal extender causing limited connection

    Hi,
I recently bought a bt dual band wifi extender 600 and it did the job perfectly for a few weeks but it is now causing 'limited connectivity' issues for all devices that try to connect through it. It is obviously the extender that is the issues as if i turn it off i get connection through the router fine when i am in the same room (as long as i am in range of course), i was wondering if this is likely to be a fault with the extender or if there are some settings i can try that may solve the problem. I have tried resetting nd moving the extender which seems to work for an hour or so but then the problem occurs again.
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Adam

Have you tried changing the wireless channel on the home hub, try channel 13?
There may be interference on the channel you are using at the moment, causing the extender to lose connection.

  • WRT54G connected to my Bell HSE Sympatico SpeedStream Modem.

I have my WRT54G connected to my Bell HSE Sympatico SpeedStream Modem. It all worked fine until I tried to set the WRT54G to forward some ports so that I can get to one of the PCs from outside via the NET. I am running Windows XP pro on the PC After I set the post forwarding I still could not see the router from the Net. It seems that the Bell Modem is “blocking” something> I would appreciate some insight to solve this issue.

There should not be a problem if you are using either the speedstream 4200 or 5300 as they are standard modems.  The 6300 and the 6520 are modem/routers so you may have to change a setting.  You can also post on the Bell Forum.

  • Extend a WRT54G with Airport Extreme

    Good afternoon everyone,
I am attempting to use my AEBS to extend an 802.11b/g wireless network from a Linksys WRT54G router. My landlord has the linky locked in his side of the duplex, but runs his network unprotected. This makes me feel unsafe using it, so what I thought I could to was connect the AEBS to the linky's network, then use that incoming network connection to created a guest network on the AEBS that IS encrypted while also extending the signal to some weaker parts of the house (like the garage). Here's is what I have tried and the results I have gotten:
    - I reset the AEBS and put it in "Join a wireless network" mode. It is able to locate the unsecured linksys network and receive a valid DHCP lease. So far so good...
    - I go to the wireless tab in the Airport Utility (AU) and change it to "Extend a wireless network" mode. The linky network is in the "Wireless network name" field and excryption is set to none. I am not creating the guest network at this time as I want to make sure I can extend the network first before adding another element to the equation.
    - After clicking update and waiting for a reset cycle, the AEBS give two errors. One is the unsecured network warning (which I am ok with) the other is an "Extended Network" error:
    - When I go into the internet tab of the AU, it shows that I am receiving a proper DHCP lease from the linky and that the AEBS *should* be receiving a valid internet connection.
    - However, when I attempt to access the linksys network from the garage, the network has not been extended at all and is just as weak there. Also, when I attempt to turn on the guest network and update the AEBS, the guest network never shows on my MBPs list of available networks.
Anyone have any thoughts? It seems like the linky is accepting the AEBS as a device and leasing it an IP address well enough, but the AEBS just isn't extending the network properly and I am not sure why not. Below are the vitals of what I am running. Thanks in advance!
Computer: Late 2008 Unibody MBP running OS 10.8.2 and Airport Utility 6.2
AEBS: Gen 3 running FW 7.6.3
Linky: WRT54G running FW 3.37.6 (and I do have access to the CP of the linky, just not access to the physical router)

I am attempting to use my AEBS to extend an 802.11b/g wireless network from a Linksys WRT54G router
Apple tells us that the "extend" feature will only work if you have another Apple router producing the wireless network.
As far as we know.....and have tested with numerous 3rd party routers, including the Linksys WRT54G.....the "extend" feature is not compatible with products from other manufacturers.
    - I reset the AEBS and put it in "Join a wireless network" mode. It is able to locate the unsecured linksys network and receive a valid DHCP lease.
"Join a wireless network" does not provide any additional wireless signal coverage. In your case, it really does not do anything unless you want to try to connect a printer or hard drive to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme. Even if you could do this, other users would "see" the device on the network.
I go to the wireless tab in the Airport Utility (AU) and change it to "Extend a wireless network" mode. The linky network is in the "Wireless network name" field and excryption is set to none.
"Extend" would be the right setting to provide more wireless signal coverage.....but I would be extremely surprised if it worked for the reasons stated above.
Even in the unlikely event that you might be able to get it to work, the AirPort could not create a Guest Network...it could only "extend" the main network. As you know, the Linksys does not have a Guest Network feature.
Your possible options would appear to be....
    1) Check with Linksys to see if they might have a compatible product that would "repeat" or extend the wireless signal
    2) Try a "universal" repeater from a company like Netgear to see if that might work
    3) Connect the AirPort Extreme back to the Linksys router using a wired Ethernet connection. If it is not possible to run the Ethernet cable, a pair of HomePlug Ethernet powerline adapters might be able to send a signal over the existing powerlines if everything is on the same master AC circuit
Options 1) and 2) would not allow you to create a private wireless network. Option 3) would if you configure the AirPort Extreme in Router mode to handle DHCP and NAT services for the network. You will have a Double NAT error on the network, but this is usually not a serious problem on a simple network.

  • Possible to wirelessly extend network and connect xbox360 to ethernet?

I needed a backup drive and also some way of connecting my xbox 360 to my wireless network because the router is in a different room. The apple employees said it was possible to extend my existing network with time capsule and to connect my xbox to the time capsule to connect it (xbox) to my network. I was able to get my time capsule connected, but am having problems getting the internet to the 360, is this possible? If so, does anyone know how to do it?

Certain versions of the Linksys WRT54G are known to be WDS-compatible with the AirPorts.
Check out some of the following articles to see if any will help you configuring the WDS:

  • Time Capsule & Airport Express Extended Network loses connection!

OK, so I am an Apple virgin of 2 months experience, after many many years with Windows based PCs, so please be patient and gentle with me. Sorry about the long explanation.....
My set-up comprises of a Time Capsule, which is connected to the Internet via a NetGear ASDL modem. Both pieces of equipment are situated in my wife's office on the first floor of our house. My office is on the ground floor, where I have a 27" iMac and an Airport Express which is connected to a printer via the USB port. The Airport Express is sited about 10 feet from the iMac.
All software and firmware are lastest versions - TC v7.5, AX v7.4.2 & Airport Utility v5.5.
For the past 2 months, I have only been using the AX to print wirelessly and the set-up has worked faultlessly.
Earlier this week, I decided change the configuration to extend the network to allow me to use my laptop & iPhone in areas of the ground floor where I had no signal. I followed the online instructions and first changed the TC to check the box to 'allow this network to be extended', after updating the configuration successfully I moved to the AX. Here I changed the wireless mode to 'Extend a wireless network', selected the network name and checked the 'Allow wireless clients' box. This also updated successfully.
Everything ran correctly and the range of the network was greatly increased.......great, job done...not!
After about 3 hours the iMac lost the connection and the TC disappeared from the Airport Utility pane and refused to reappear. I checked but also couldn't connect or see any network on the laptop or iPhone, so have dismissed a fault with the iMac. I finally got things back up after doing a power reset of the TC, but after a few hours same problem occurred, and occurred and occurred. By clicking the Airport Utility icon on the top right of the screen and following the prompts from 'no Internet connection', I can at least get things up and working without a power reset of the TC, but the connection still drops after 2-5 hours each time.
My first call to Apple Support led to a full reset and re-config of both the TC and AX, setting the extended network up as I had done originally. The only difference was an iMac reset (alt/cmd P&R on power up) and changing the 2.4Ghz channel from 1 to 11. This had no affect and the connection drop-out problem continued.
My second call to Apple Support led to me being passed to a Level 2 Techie, who first suggested that I tried disabling the Guest Network - tried it, and it made no difference. I was then told to try a WDS network, which whilst not losing connection, is slower and has less range than the original extended network and frankly sounds a cop-out.
Has anyone had a similar problem, anyone solved the problems, can anyone offer any help or advice please.. I'd appreciate any input....thanks.

Similar problem here. Cable Modem (Moto SB6120)->AEBS (802.11n dual-band)>AX (802.11n) for wireless connection to MacBook Pro running Mac OS X 10.6.2. AEBS configured as dual-band: 801.11a/n at 5GHZ and 801.11b/g/n at 2.4 GHZ. AX configured to wirelessly extend the AEBS 5GHz 802.11a/n network. I am able to run on the extended 5GHz network (via AX) for varying lengths of time, until the internet connection dies. When this occurs, I am able to switch over to the 2.4GHz network to get back online. Solution up until now has been to unplug the AX, then plug it back in. After the AX restarts, I am able to hop back onto its 5GHz signal and get to the internet. However, the internet connection on this band will drop again after some time.
I was on the phone with Apple Support twice in the past week to get this resolved, but no joy. Senior Advisor seemed to think that my AX was working properly, and that that the problem could be with my AEBS -- perhaps the 5GHz antenna might be bad in my AEBS? Seems odd to me, since both my AEBS and AX are less than 2 months old...
I just read the post from LocoDoc and decided to see if I could replicate the problem. Sure enough, when I am connected to the internet via my AX extended 5GHz network signal and a Time Machine backup starts, the internet connection quits. Only recourse is to restart the AX. Note that I do not experience this problem with Time Machine while connected wirelessly straight to the AEBS 5GHz signal. Only when I am connected to the "extended" signal via the AX.

  • Network Extender - Losing Concurrent Connections to DROID?

Would having a DROID or Blackberry device that is turned on eat up one of my three concurrent Network Extender connections, even if the DROID is not calling someone, but it's data connection is active?

When using the Network Extender, it keeps a connection active on your phone, regardless if you are not receiving a call. The Network Extender uses one of your connections for staying in a ready mode to receive a call should one come in. The Network Extender will also use data for any applications or emails that you have setup on your device.  For more information about the Network Extender, please visit the link below:
