Extend Guest Network

My apologies if this has been asked before. I've searched the forum and I can't find any particular posts which explicitly states that this cannot be done.
I have an early 2009 Time Capsule(500GB) which is my main wireless AP which is connected to my Cable Modem. I have set up the Guest Network Access and it is working flawlessly. However there are some major blindspots on the ground floor of my house so I just recently bought an Airport Extreme to extend the network off the TC wirelessly.
As expected my network reception throughout the house is now excellent however it seems that the Guest Network wasn't extended. Is this by design or is it due to my configuration? I really want to extend the guest network as well or else my guests will have to go all the way up to the 2nd floor at least to access my network.

If it is not a bother may I know why this is not possible? Is it due to technology constraints or due to Apple's own decision?
Apple has not provided a lot of detail surrounding the design of their Guest network option on the new AirPorts & Time Capsules. It is believed to be an implementation of VLAN technology ... with (currently) limited administration offerings.
If you have a requirement to provide isolated wireless networks, you would have to look at another vendor's solutions to do so. One example would be the Cisco RVS4000 which provides L2 switching capability.

  • Time Capsule + Airport Express (no password for extended guest network)

    Hi guys,
I´m using at home an Time Capsule combined with an Airport Express for extended range.
I´ve activated the Guest Network on the Time Capsule, using an WPA2 Password for it.
Problem is, the Airport Express is extending both the regular network and the guest network, but there´s no password set for the extended guest network.
So basically there are 4 networks, 3 are properly secured (TC regular and guest and AE regular) but I can´t set a password for the Guest Network that´s being extended by the Airport Express.
I have looked everywhere on the AirPort Utility with no luck whatsoever.
I appreciate any help on this.

Time Capsule and Airport Express, Windows 7
So you don't have a Mac or even iOS device to setup the TC and express?
This addition of extending guest is new in later firmware.. but you need the 6.2 utility to control it.. AFAIK.

  • Guest Network reappeared after firmware update- Can't delete it.

I'm running a wireless network from my 1 TB TimeCapsule, with Firmware 7.6.3, which was updated today.  I'm not sure the firmware version previously.  Before a move to a new state, I'd previously run a guest network.  When I got new internet service here after the move, the telephone company supplied a wireless modem, on which I turned off its wireless mode, and shared its internet to the Time Capsule via ethernet  (on the TC: Connection Sharing = off - Bridge Mode).  And Airport Utility no longer let me have the ability to set up a guest network.
I came to understand that is typical, and actually was persuaded this was better (not splitting bandwidth, etc) per this discussion and others: https://discussions.apple.com/message/18673654#18673654.
Now, today, after this firmware update, suddenly my previous guest network has reappeared, with the same security key that I'd programmed into it in another state.  However, I'm not able to do anything about it!!  There's no access to it via Airport Utility! I think I'd like to turn off the guest network.  But I'm intrigued by the possibility of having the ability to turn it on again.
    Any ideas?

As I'm trying to scan a few threads (with time I don't really have),
    ex:  https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4785878?tstart=0
it looks like this firmware was to support a higher version of Airport Utility (6.1), explicitly with extended guest network support.  I'm guessing my problem, with an older version of Airport Utility, is one of those unexpected collateral damage issues.  A way to go back in firmware is mentioned on the 2nd page of that thread:

About downgrading the firmware. On Airport Utility v5.6 it is simple. I am at the moment on 2 Snow leopard computers.
In the menu of the utility, choose "load Firmware..." thats all.   It seems only to know the previous used firmwares. I skipped 7.6.2 and that is also not available. Also, on my newer  Snow leopard computer I only can choose between 7.6.1 and 7.6.3, while on my other Snow leopard computer I also can in addition choose 7.6 and 7.5.2 versions. Apparently they are stored in the libraries of the local computer.
There is an other option to load other firmware, but than you get a dialog were to look for it.
    Would you recommend this?

  • How do you extend the guest network on a time capsule to an apple express?

I have a time capsule in my main house with a password protected guest network i set up an apple express in the guest house to extend the networks. Unfortunately the guest house / apple express is only amplifying the main house network. I would like my tenant to join the guest network from apple express. Is that possible?
How do you extend the guest network on a time capsule to an apple express?

I would like my tenant to join the guest network from apple express. Is that possible?
Sorry, but Apple does not allow the Guest Network to be extended in any way.

  • How to extend secure network and guest network.

Sorry if this has been covered but I couldn't find it.
I have an Airport Extreme running the 7.6.3 firmware.  Once Comcast gets their act together it will be running off a static IP.  I want to wirelessly extend my guest WiFi and my secure WiFi.  What do I need to get this done?  Do I need to get an Express for each network? Or can another Extreme repeat both networks?  Eventually I hope we will have Cat5 running to the repeater's location but that could be a long way off.
    Thanks!

I cannot get the web page to open when I do a search on the SMC8014, but it appears that this is a modem/router or gateway type of device.....which will not allow the Guest Network feature to be enabled on the AirPort Extreme.
I did find this, which confirms that the SMC is a modem/router or gateway....not what you want.
    http://www.speedguide.net/routers/smc-smc8014-biz-business-cable-gateway--534
The solution is to find out from SMC or your Internet Service Provider whether or not the 8014 can be configured to operate in "Bridge Mode".....which would then allow you to configure the AirPort Extreme to operate as the main router on the network. This would allow the Guest Network option on the AirPort Extreme to be enabled correctly.
Or better yet.....ask your ISP for a simple modem.......not a modem/router or gateway type of device.
So assuming this is all compatable (or I get compatable equipment),  I can extend both networks with 1 express or 1 extreme?
    That is correct.

  • HT4259 Can a wireless guest network be extended?

Our church has two Airport Extreme Model A1354.   Our main wireless network, called FCCAK, is extended just fine throughout the building.  Our Guest network, called FCCAK Guest, is not reaching the basement, and it looks like that network is not being transmitted at all from the extender Router.   The Airport Extreme Utility has no check box on the guest network Tab to "extend this network."  Can we extend two wireless networks using our two Airport Extreme routers?  We bought both of these at the same time in March 2010.

Unfortunately it is not possible to extend the guest network from an Airport, it is only possible to extend the "main" network.

  • Extend both main and guest networks with a 2nd Time Capsule?

I have a 4th generation 2TB Time Capsule set up to broadcast primary and guest networks.  I am running out of storage.  I would like to increase my storage and I would also like to extend both primary and guest networks.
I currently use an older Linksys router (WRT330N) operating in bridge mode (wired connection to the TC) to extend the primary network, but it does not extend the guest network.
If I purchase a second (5th generation) Time Capsule to replace the Linksys, can it be set up to extend both the primary and guest networks?
From searching the forum, it appears not, but I'd like to confirm.  Is true for both both wireless and cabled range extension options?
If I'm not able to extend the guest network this way, I'm inclined to settle for extending the primary network as I currently do and look for other ways to increase my network storage capacity (e.g. by upgrading the drive in my existing TC).

If I purchase a second (5th generation) Time Capsule to replace the Linksys, can it be set up to extend both the primary and guest networks?
Yes, either using wireless or an Ethernet connection between the two Time Capsules, providing that the 4th Gen Time Capsule is running at least firmware version 7.6.3.
A wired Ethernet connection between the two Time Capsules is highly recommended. If you plan to extend using wireless, the second Time Capsule will need to be located where it can receive a very good signal from the first.

  • Extending a network and the new guest access feature

    Hi-
Currently, I have 3 of the 802.11n Airport Extremes—One creating the network, and two extending the network.
I would like to get the new feature that allows you to setup guest access---
My question: Will I be able to purchase ONE of the new Airports, setup guest access and extend it using the older Airports, or will I have to buy three of the new Airports to make this work….
Thanks for any help or advice!

It would seem almost certain that the older AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) would not extend both the normal network and the guest access network. You should be able to extend the normal network.

  • Extending Time Capsule primary and guest networks with 2nd Time Capsule

    Hi
I have two Time Capsules. The first is configured to run a primary and guest network. It is connected to an ADSL modem. All of this works fine.
The second Time Capsule is cable connected to the first, in a 2nd location (a next door building).
I want the 2nd Time Capsule to extend _both_ primary and secondary networks in its location.
How do I configure the 2nd Time Capsule (and the first if there is anything I have to do there to get this to work).
    Please! and thanks...
    Graham

Sorry, but the Guest network cannot be extended either through wireless or Ethernet.
If you would like to see this feature in a future product, you might want to let Apple know

  • I enabled the guest network feature on my time capsule.  Can I configure my airport extremes guest network feature if I use this as a network extender using a "roaming" network?

I enabled the guest network feature on my TC.  Can I configure my airport extremes guest network feature if I use the extreme as a network extender connecting my Airport Extreme to my TC via ethernet cable?

Unfortunately no, since the AirPort Extreme should be configured in Bridge Mode if it is connecting to the Time Capsule using an Ethernet connection.
The Guest Network option cannot be enabled when the AirPort is configured in Bridge Mode.
Another way of saying the same thing is that the Guest Network cannot be "extended" either by using an Ethernet connection or wireless. It is only available from the Time Capsule "main" wireless router on your network, not any extending devices.

  • Extending the guest network

For some reason, the guest network from my Dual Band AirPort Extreme does not show up in the list of networks on my wireless N AirPort Express. The private network shows up. Can I not extend the guest network.
To go one step further, I don't suppose the express could extend both the private and guest networks. You would probably need two for that right?

I have a similar need. Two business customers want to make wireless access available over the entire area of their operation without letting users gain access to their internal network. As has been said by everyone on all the posts I've been on that we can surely extend the Main SSID network but not the guest. Bob Timmons has responded in other posts that this is not possible at this time and that it is not a feature enabled by APPLE. The only solution these customers have is to obtain another IP address from their provider and install a second router on that network. Not quite as elegant as Apple's Airport Extreme where you can monitor both networks from one login.

  • HT3477 Guest network extends too?

When you use an airport express to extend the range of your base station router, does it extend both your main network AND your guest network? I'm using an airport extreme as my base station and an express to extend it.

does this mean I need to buy a second generation to have the guest network extended too?
Yes, as I said above, it will work.....IF
    1) You have the 2nd Gen version of the AirPort Express. That model number is A1392.
A1264 will extend the Main Network.....but not the Guest Network

  • Guest Networking across WDS or extended network

Does the new 'guest networking' feature in the new AirPort Extreme work in a WDS network or across an extended network?
Does it work with older gear, specifically the previous model of the AirPort Extreme?
    Thanks.

...the previous model of the AirPort Extreme?
The earlier square 802.11b/g/n AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS)?
or the round 802.11b/g AEBS? It is no for this one.

  • Extending a Guest Network

Can I extend the range of a guest network of an Extreme Base Station by using an Express?
If I can, (I haven't set up a guest network yet) my existing modem/router is currently set to act as a DHCP server - do I turn this off and use the Extreme as a DHCP server?

    Welcome to the discussions!
Unfortunately, it is not possible to extend the Guest network on the AirPort Extreme.
And, also unfortunately if you have your existing router set as the DHCP server, the AirPort Extreme must be configured in bridge mode. In this configuration, the Guest network feature is not available.
So, if you want to use the Guest networking feature, the AirPort Extreme will need to be configured as the main router handling DHCP and NAT.

  • New AE-Use as extender AND utilize dual-band or guest network?

I currently have a 1st Gen Time Capsule hooked into my only cable modem. However, the signal is very weak on the 2nd floor of my house. I've been thinking about getting an Airport Express to extend my network so that I have improved coverage upstairs.
Now it appears that the new Express supports the dual-band and the guest network that my original 1st gen TC does not. If I purchase it to extend my network, can I also use these features or would it have to be the first device in the network (hooked into the cable modem?

If I purchase it to extend my network, can I also use these features or would it have to be the first device in the network (hooked into the cable modem?
Unfortunately, your Time Capsule is not a simultaneous dual band model, so the "new" AirPort Express would only extend one band....just like the "old" AirPort Express would do.
Maybe Apple has a deal on refurbished or close out "old" Express devices that might help you.
Otherwise, you would need to connect the "new" AirPort Express to the cable modem to get the benefits of a "main" and "guest" network.  The "guest" network cannot be extended, by the way. It is only produced by the "main" AirPort connected to the modem.
