Extend Network and AirTunes

Hi,
Can you extend your current AirPort network and still stream your music with AirTunes.

coolchris540-
Greetings and welcome to the Apple boards.
Do you mean extend the physical distance that it will cover and stream from one end to the other?

  • AirPort Express - extend network and/or AirTunes - one or both ?

I would like use my second AE to extend my existing AE network AND wire it to my stereo to use the AirTunes feature. No trouble setting it up for AirTunes but can't seen to get it to extend the network. Any tips about how I can get both features to perform as advertised?

If you need more wireless coverage, you can use the WDS configuration method for a "mix" of older "b/g" and newer "n" devices.
The big downsides here are that WDS operates only at "g" wireless, so you lose any faster "n" capability on the network...and...the bandwidth of the entire network will be cut in half. So, in effect you will have a bit more wireless coverage, but it will be a "g" wireless network running at half speed.
I don't recommend this, but if you want to try, post back for more details.

  • AEX for both extending network and streaming music?

I have a Time capsule purchased in late 2008 and a recent Airport express. Can I use the AEX to both extend my network and stream music at the same time? I set it up to extend my network and everything works find so far.
    Thanks

Yes, just make sure AirTunes is enabled in AirPort Utility for the Express.

  • Extend network AND connect via ethernet?

How do I configure Airport Express to extend my network wirelessly and connect a computer via Ethernet?
I have 2 buildings at my church I am in charge of getting this to work in. The office building has a wireless network, the sanctuary has no ethernet or wireless at all. I can get a good signal to an Airport Express I just purchased inside the sanctuary and I am using that to feed internet to the PowerMac G4 that doesnt seem to see the network from the Office area. I was told that this could also extend my wireless network to the other computers in the sanctuary. I have not been able to get this to happen.
I succesfully have it in "Join a Network" mode and it grabs the signal and gets internet to the G4. As soon as I change the mode to "Extend my network", I lose all connectivity with the network. In addition, no matter what mode I am in, I can't see this Airport from any devices wirelessly either in the utility or in the Airport browser.
So...how do I allow other machines/tablets/etc to use this airport to hook in to our network AND use the Ethernet line to feed the G4?
    Thanks,
    Joey

I am going from an Airport Extreme 4th gen (dual band) to an Airport Express 2nd gen (just replaced thanks to the Genius Bar, it used to be a 1st gen. single band) and then picking it up with another Express 2nd gen.
    That.....is the problem.
I had understood from your initial post that you had an AirPort Extreme and wanted to extend to several AirPort Express devices.
Apple's "extend" setup works like the hub and spokes of a wheel. The AirPort Extreme would be the "hub" and the AirPort Expresses would reside at the end of the "spokes".
You can have multiple AirPort Express devices located at the ends of the spokes, but in order to "extend", each one of the them must connect directly to the "hub".....not to another extending device at the end of another spoke.
What you are trying to set up is a "hub", "relay" and "remote".  Unfortunately, Apple's "extend" setup does not work this way.
The distant remote can pick up a signal from an Express at the end of a spoke acting as an extender, but the distant remote cannot "extend" the signal from an Express at the end of a spoke using wireless.
The distant remote is actually joining the network....that is why the Ethernet port is active....but unfortunately,  there will be no wireless signal from this device.
Somewhere, an Express will need to connect back to the Extreme using a wired Ethernet connection. Then that Express can "extend" to another Express using wireless.

  • Extending Network and Gaming Consoles

I have a airport extreme set up in my office. Downstairs I have 4 gaming consoles, which require fast internet speeds other wise it effects game play. The signal where 2 of my consoles are do not get great reception. So I know I can use an airport express, plug it in where I get reception downstairs and have it extend the range of my network.
However, I have 2 questions about this:
    1) I have my extreme set up for N and my gaming consoles are G. The extreme is backwards compatible, but will the same hold true if I add an Express to the network? Will my G consoles still work?
    2) In my head I think this would slow down the speed. I would think my console would have to go through an express, then the express sends up to my extreme, then finally out to the internet. Would adding an express slow the connection at all because now it has one extra point it travels through?
    Thanks,
    Andrew

The 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) can be added to your network configuration to extend the wireless range of the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn). If you configure the overall extended network for the "802.11n (802.11b/g compatible)" radio mode, your "g" game consoles should be able to connect.
    2) In my head I think this would slow down the speed. I would think my console would have to go through an express, then the express sends up to my extreme, then finally out to the internet. Would adding an express slow the connection at all because now it has one extra point it travels through?
The bottom line ... yes, extending the network and support for "g" clients will reduce the overall bandwidth available for the wireless network. If bandwidth performance is critical, you may want to consider switching to an all Ethernet-based solution.

  • RE6500 - deleting extended networks and other queries

I've got four questions which I hope have easy answers:
    1) I have an RE6500 and have set it up using the excellently simple instructions to extend my 2.4GHz network.. Later, once it's running, I use the web interface to a add a 5GHz extended network. Now my original 2.4GHZ network, which belongs to my router, is extended to 2.4GHz and 5GHz. Excellent. So later still I decide I want to remove the 5GHz network. But how? There's no button or box to turn off either of the extended networks. The only way I've been able to get rid of the 5GHz extended network is to perform a factory reset and start again from scratch. There must be a better way, but what is it?
    2) The 5GHz extended network I created in (1) comes up on channel 36. How can I change this?
    3) I want the extender to only "listen" on 2.4GHz and only "talk" on 5GHz.  How can I do this?
    4) Is it me, or are the keyhole slots on the base (for wall mounting) really the wrong way up?

The RE6500 lets you repeat the wireless signal of any access point or router to provide Internet connectivity in hard to reach areas through a wireless connection on the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz frequency band. You can't change the channel. You can disable the SSID broadcast by accessing the user interface of the extender. The link shows an RE1000 but accesing it is just the same.
Title: Accessing the web-based setup page of the Linksys range extender
Yes, you can wall mount the RE 6500.

  • IPad will not connect with extended network and/or guest network

I have extended my main network (AP Extreme) with an AP Express and uses a guest network too, all Macs, PC's, iPhones, game consoles, mediaplayers can connect to the internet with both networks. Only one device does not work with the main network and that is the iPad (1st gen). It can connect to the guest network, though. If i disconnect the Express, the iPad can connect with the main network or if I set the guest network to off it will too. But  I want to connect to the main network (remote access).
    Device.                          Network.          iPad internetconnection
    Extreme.                        Main.               Yes
    Extreme + Express.       Main.               Yes
Extreme.                        Main + guest    Yes both
Extreme + Express.       Main + guest.   NO
I have reset the network configurations on the iPad and it works for only one time, if the iPad goes into sleep mode and restarts, the connections is lost. The iPad seems to be connected with the router/AP but no internet access.
    Fyi
    - all devices have a fixed IP address dedicated by the Airport. i tried to use DHCP, but no difference
    - radio channels on automatic
    - all on 2,4 GHz band
IS THIS A IPAD 1 ISSUE and do I have to accept the fact that Apple does not support the iPad 1 anymore?
Any suggestions how to fix this? Thank you.

    Thank you for the suggestion.
The name of my home wifi network is automatically found by the iPad and after I select it the iPad asks for a password.  I have typed in my password that I use with my laptop, but it does not work.
I also tried the two alpha numeric 13 digit strings on my router.  It is actually a Belkin.  Neither of those worked either.
finally, I went into general as I could not find settings to tell the iPad to forget network settings?

  • Extended networks and user limits

Here's my setup in a small office with 10 people:
DSL modem > AirportExtreme (dual channel), extended over ethernet to an Airport Express set up to extend the b/g/n network.
Over half of the people use the wireless network, and most people here have an iPhone, so depending on where people are standing at any given moment, the possibility exists that the Express could get more than 10 devices trying to connect.
My first question is what happens if an 11th user tries to join an Airport Express network? Will they bump someone else off, or simply not connect?
My second question is, assuming the user is turned away from the Express network because 10 users are already connected , but they are still in range of the Extreme, will their device automatically join that one, even if the signal is weaker?

My first question is what happens if an 11th user tries to join an Airport Express network? Will they bump someone else off, or simply not connect?
    Probably they will not connect.
My second question is, assuming the user is turned away from the Express network because 10 users are already connected , but they are still in range of the Extreme, will their device automatically join that one, even if the signal is weaker?
This is not known since Apple has never published the algorithms they use in these situations. The best thing you can do is try it and see what happens.

  • How to enable 802.11N extended network and WPA2 Personal Security?

    Hello,
I have an aiport express 802.11N, using Radio Mode 802.11N (5Ghz only) and set to "allow this network to be extended". At the same time the wireless security is set to "WPA2 Personal" (and the key defined). This router is also hooked up to the internet as the main bridge.
On the other side, I have an airport extreme set exactly the same way from a security standpoint (WPA2 Personal) and for this one, the wireless is set to "extend a wireless network".
    Both routers have their light green and my computer is wired to the airport extreme. The computer gets its IP address from the main dhcp server and I can FTP to any ftp site; I can ping any machines on my network;
Now the problem:I can not browse the internet nor ping any website. Http traffic is completely blocked.
If I reset the security to none on both routers, I can then access the internet without any problem.
Has anybody been succesful with this configuration and what am I doing wrong?

You need to download and install the AirPort Extreme 802.11n* Enabler for Mac. But it will cost you --- $1.99. Order it from the Apple Store:

  • WDS Extended Network and Passwords

Hi. I setup a WDS network with an Airport extreme base station as the main and an Aiport Express as the remote. It works perfectly as it extends the reach of the network to all my house. The only issue is that when I try to setup the WPA passwords (to protect the network) the base stations stop recognizing each other and I lose the extended capabilities. When I switch back to no passwords, everything starts working well again.
    Any suggestions?

A "static WDS" arrangement requires that all stations have the same settings for a number of things, including encryption type and network password. Have you been successful in changing those values on both units and still find that they don't communicate?

  • WDS network and Airtunes

I have a WDS network as follows: TC hard wired to AX n which connects wirelessly to an AX b/g that is only used for Airtunes. It works great.
But I tried to duplicate it at a friend's house; the only difference is that her TC is wired to an AX b/g which we want to connect wirelessly to another AX b/g for Airtunes. Works great for internet at both from both the TC and the AX hard-wired b/g. But we can't get her last AX to work on Airtunes; it stays flashing yellow. I duplicated all the settings (e.g., "participate in a network", other checkboxes, etc) exactly. Any advice? Could it really be that the fact that mine runs through an AX n and hers through an AX b really be the difference? Other ideas?
    Thanks!

PS - FYI, in both situations, the hard-wired AX is set up as WDS main, and the AX connected wirelessly for Airtunes is set up as WDS remote; and connection sharing is set up as "off - bridge mode".
    Thanks again for any help.

  • Possible to wirelessly extend network and connect xbox360 to ethernet?

I needed a backup drive and also some way of connecting my xbox 360 to my wireless network because the router is in a different room. The apple employees said it was possible to extend my existing network with time capsule and to connect my xbox to the time capsule to connect it (xbox) to my network. I was able to get my time capsule connected, but am having problems getting the internet to the 360, is this possible? If so, does anyone know how to do it?

Certain versions of the Linksys WRT54G are known to be WDS-compatible with the AirPorts.
Check out some of the following articles to see if any will help you configuring the WDS:

  • Powermac Dual 1.25 Mirror Drive AE AE to Extend Network and Play Tunes?

Can I play music from my iTunes on my 1.25 Powermac using two Airport Express'? When the AE first came out Apple Support said my iTunes music had to be stored and playing out of a newer Mac (like my Powerbook) for me to shoot music in iTunes to a second, WDS extended AE. Can I set this music network up using my Powerbook, but use the music library on my 1.25 Powermac to feed the a second WDS AE?
The fact is my original AE was dead on arrival, so I never got to try this out. I'm thinking about buying a second AE to see if Apple Support might have misunderstood what I was trying to do.
Can anyone help me? I really don't want my iTunes library running from my Powerbook. I'd much rather use my 1.25 as a music server to a WDS location.

    Hi
unfortunately processor cards from MDD G4s aren't compatible with Quicksilver (and earlier) G4s as they use slightly different architectures and possibly even different processor sockets. That's partly why OWC (and other third party) processor upgrades cover models from the AGP/Sawtooth G4s upto the Quicksilver 2002 G4s, but aren't compatible with the MDD or FW800 G4s.
The fastest 'Apple original part' upgrade would be a dual 1GHz from a Quicksilver 2002. I swapped my single 800MHz for a dual 1GHz (pulled from another Quicksilver) and the difference in performance was very worthwhile.
Having said that though, most benchmarks show a dual processor G4 is around 40% faster than a single processor running at the same clock speed, so I'm not sure a dual 1GHz would be much (if any) faster than a single 1.5GHz. Also which ever processor upgrade you choose, you're still stuck with the same relatively slow 133MHz system bus, which will impact real world performance.
    I hope this helps.

  • Do I need 2 airport expresses to run a network and airtunes at the same time?

Meaning, if I set up the network in my office with the airport express, I need another one plugged into the stereo for air tunes right?  unless I want to unplug it and move it back and forth right?

If the stereo and the Internet modem are not in the same room, then "yes," you will need another AirPort Express in order to do both simultaneously.
