Extend network - Bad AE? Outside Setup Question - Help!

I am having fits trying to get a TC network and (1) n AE Extend a network. I have the TC as the main base station - its mode is set to create a wireless network and its "allows to be extended". The AE is set to extend.
Two story house - AE is downstairs and I get full coverage up and down. As soon as I step outside, I get no signal. I have an outside room that I need a signal in.
I can stand next to the AE inside from the outside and get nothing. Come inside - get a signal. I am thinking the AE is not doing anything for me. Seems like my signal does not attach to the base station.
Should the TC be in the mode "extend" or "WDS" ? Could the N AE be bad? I have called Apple a couple times and each time I get a different setup config from them and neither make it work.

the TC is the primary router - the AE has no bridge mode. would not that be the secondary router? in this setup?
i do have a verizon fios router and its wireless is off. does that come in the picture here?

Airport express won't extend network via ethernet but shows GREEN (HELP!!)

I have the following routers setup up the same network and are working.
10.0.1.1 Airport Extreme (connected to hardline from IP)
10.0.1.2 Time Capsule 1 (extending network and providing internet connection to computer via ethernet)
10.0.1.3 Time Capsule 2 (extending network and providing internet connection to Xbox1)
10.0.1.4 Airport Express 1 (extending network and providing internet connection to Xbox2)
Not working correctly
10.0.1.43 Airport Express 2 (wanting to set this router up to extend network to plug into desktop)
The router seems to join the network fine and will show GREEN but doesn't show a similar IP address as the rest of the routers. It also doesn't provide any internet connection via ethernet to any computer, the network pref page says that it shows RED and that nothing is connected to the computer for internet but airport shows GREEN.
Reset the router multiple times, tried every which way of setting it up and no go. I also tried assigning it a IP and not using DHCP and gave it a 10.0.1.5 and still the same outcome.
Right now just at complete loss as to what to try next.

Sorry, the older version of the Express does not have the option to "extend a wireless network", which is the setting on the new Express that provides more wireless coverage and also enables the Ethernet port.
What you want to do can be done with a different setting..."participate in a WDS network" on both the Time Capsule and Express, but I am not recommending that you do this because WDS operates only in "g" wireless mode. Your Time Capsule would lose most of its performance in this setting and the network would slow down tremendously...defintely not what you want for gaming.
You'll have the best performance if you connect the PS3 directly to one of the Ethernet ports on the Time Capsule using an Ethernet cable. If it is not possible to run the cable, the next best performance option would be to use a pair of Ethernet powerline adapters to send the Ethernet signal over the existing AC wiring in your home.

Extended network setup with printer and airport disk

The network I want looks like this: The modem plugs into Airport Express using ethernet. Audio plugs in here to go to the stereo for music. Then the signal is sent wirelessly to an Airport Extreme in the other room, which has a printer and a hard drive connected to it.
I can't get the Extreme to stop flashing yellow. I tried extending the network created by the Express. I tried a WDS network with Express as main and Extreme as remote. Same network name, different network names, factory resets...I seem to be at a loss. I had an older "Snow" type Airport and I had the printer working on it (though it didn't support hard drives). I can't seem to duplicate the steps I took when I set up that network.

It would help to know which AirPort Extreme, 802.11b/g or n, and Fast Ethernet versus Gigabit, and Express (b/g or n) devices you have.
Also, if you have any of the newer 802.11n AirPort devices, make sure that you update the firmware and AirPort Utility software.
If you're trying to setup a WDS, that's for 802.11g and if you're trying to "extend" a network, that for 802.11n.

Can't setup an extended network

I am hoping this group can help as I have had no luck with Apple support and am not willing to pay $50 to get a $100 airport express working. Anyway I digress.
I have an airport extreme and an airport express. I am trying to setup an extended network so that I can connect a DVD player to the net.
I have an Extreme connected to the internet and have gone through the tutorial to set up the extended network. However I do not have the option in my drop down to select extend a network under my express wireless tab.
I know that you can use a WDS but am not familiar with this setup.
Any suggestions.

Using your AirPort Express, your only option to provide more wireless coverage and enable the ethernet port on the Express is to use the WDS settings on both your AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express. Unfortunately, WDS is an older technology that will force some significant performance penalties upon your network. In brief:
1) WDS operates only at "g" wireless speeds, so you will lose any advantage of having a newer "n" wireless AirPort Extreme. The entire network will drop down to "g" wireless.
2) WDS will additonally impose a 50% bandwidth (speed) loss on your entire network. So, in effect you will have a "g" wireless network that is operating a half speed. If you are planning to download high definition movies, you'll need as much bandwidth as you can get. WDS may not work here. At best, it will be borderline.
3) WDS is a difficult configuration for many users. It's easy to make a mistake and hard to recover when you do. Basically, you have to start all over and try things again.

I'm guessing that it's not feasible to run an ethernet cable from your AirPort Extreme to the DVD player, but that is the best way that you can configure a device like this and it will provide the best performance.
If your budget allows, the AirPort Express 802.11"n" will allow you to use Apple's "extend a wireless network" feature, which will provide much better performance than a WDS setup. The "extend" configuration will maintain full "n" speeds on your network with a mimimum of bandwidth loss and should work OK for downloading movies. And, it is much easier and faster to configure than WDS setups.

Wds vs extended network questions

little background first...task is to setup a closed WPA2 wireless network consisting of 4 mac minis (duo cores/10.4.10 fully updated) and 3 or 4 AEBS' on the 5GHz band. One AEBS will be connected via ethernet to an existing router (DHCP) while the others need to extend the network. I've had the masses working exceptionally well as a WDS (main/relay/remote) and as an extended network (main/ext/ext/ext) in a test area but have a few questions i've been unable to find answers to:
1. As an extended network, how many AEBS' can be setup to extend the network? (as bridges)
2. Any way to enable/select the 5GHz band for a WDS setup?
3. All the mini's except for one with Airport Admin 5.1 installed join the network automatically after sleep, shutdown etc. The fix on the support page works but is this issue possibly due to the new airport admin util? I'd like to keep the WPA2 security in place even tho it's a closed network and have a local machine able to administer these things if possible.

WDS is an 802.11b/g feature and therefore not supported when using 5 GHz. However 802.11n has a new "extend network" feature.
I'd like to keep the WPA2 security in place even tho it's a closed network and have a local machine able to administer these things if possible.
Is this a question? WPA2 is great security and you should use it. A "closed" network is a deception and only fools you into thinking it adds any security. The SSID/Network name is still broadcast between any connected client and the base station. Therefore the network name is easily detectable.
Any machine can be used to configure the AEBS at any time. There is no machine designated as the controller or admin.

Time Capsule Access Control and Extended Network Question

I have a Time Capsule where I have set up a wireless network access list…and extended the network using an Airport Express unit. The Airport Express unit also has settings for an Access Control list. Do these need to be the same as the those for the network from TC that it is extending…or does that happen automatically…and if not what on earth are they for?

Unfortunately, they are not automatically applied to each base station in an extended network. You would have to manually enter the exact same list in each base station.

Can I setup "Roaming" and "Extended Network" on the same device?

I have 2 buildings that need wifi coverage. In the main building, I have 2 Apple Airport Extremes. I have one as the main router. The 2nd has a network cable from the 1st unit and is setup as "Roaming". I would like to add "Extended Network" (wireless) function to the 2nd unit. Then I would place a 3 Airport Extreme at the 2nd building. I have signal at the 2nd building, but I would like it to be stronger.
Can I setup an Airport Extreme with Roaming and Extended Network functions and if so, how would I do it.

Yes, that should be no problem.
Windows 7 uses 5.6 airport utility.. what model extreme are you setting up??
But it is relatively simple.. you do not need to generally do anything now for the AE setup for roaming..
On the one you will extend, simply plug it into a computer.. run the airport utility.. go to the wireless tab and put in the extend wireless with the name and security of the wireless you are extending.

Extend AirPort Extreme Network with AirPort Express- Setup assistance

I have an AirPort Extreme working nicely and connected directly to my Comcast cable modem. I would like to extend my network for greater coverage upstairs and to run an upstairs printer on the network. I cannot get the Express connected as an extension to my existing wireless network. What am I doing wrong?

Hi Bob. Do you mind if I listen in on this thread? I am trying to extend a network the same way JVT1057 is, yet my Mac mini in the Airport application cannot find the Express device. The Extreme device is up and working well, and is "seen" by the mini in the utility, but not the Express device. I need a stronger signal in a home office upstairs and would like to connect a networked printer here in the office via the Express.
What am I doing wrong? I, too, have specifiied on the Extreme menus that I want the network to be extended.

I'm confused please help me...using airport to extend network

I bought an apple airport extreme base station a few days ago. I was told I could use it to extend my networks range. I currently have tv Internet and phone through xfinity/Comcast. My xfinitity router is an SMC and I need to use it cuz the phone runs off it. I live in a 4 level townhome and it's range *****. Doesn't work in all rooms on the 4th floor. So I bought the base station and hooked it up to the SMC via an Ethernet and thought I set up right. But I noticed the range didn't improve so I opened the airport utility on my MacBook pro I clicked on the base station on the next window under wireless under a drop down I chose "extend network" or something like that. It said wait a few moments for update then I got an error. So I called apple to ask what I was doing wrong and they said I couldn't use an airport to extend the network of a 3rd party router. Not unless I put them in different rooms and connected them with a super long Ethernet. So now I'm confused is that right? All I want is a better signal in my house. Please someone help me and explain to me how I make that happen..

I wasn't able to figure out how to set up the roaming network.
It is the same thing that you have set up now except you use the same wireless network name, same security settings and password as the "main" router and make sure that Bridge Mode is being used.
We can easily troubleshoot this if you want.
Now I'm just wondering if I could have done the same thing with the cheaper express base station?
You could, but it would not be dual band operation like you have now, and no more than 10 wireless clients would be able to connect to the AirPort Express. You also have available Ethernet ports on the AirPort Extreme in case you need to connect a device that way. In addition, the Extreme has a much better Wi-Fi antenna than the Express.

Question about extending network

I just ordered the brand new Airport Extreme. My current Airport Extreme is about 6 years old so I upgraded to take advantage of the better WiFi speeds. What I'm wondering is what I can do with my old Airport Extreme, which still works fine. Does it make sense to set it up somewhere else in the house to extend my wireless signal further away from my new one, and if so, how do I ensure that I'm not connecting to the slower Extreme signal than the newer one if it is extending the network.

Which old model AirPort Extreme do you have?
Round shaped? Square shaped?
If it's the square version, it can be set up to "extend a wireless network", but the extending AirPort will of course not run at 802.11ac speeds.

Wireless devices will connect to the AirPort with the strongest signal, which is also going to be the closest AirPort at the time. No way to avoid that.
If you want to maintain 802.11ac speeds throughout an extended network, you will need two new AirPort Extremes.

I'm having the same issue. My AExpress used to give a good signal strength on the far side of the house extending he network created by my Extreme. However, I've noticed lately that my iPhone does not receive the same strong signal it once did. AE has a green light, I've rebooted it, and my Extreme but there is no change in signal strength. Other than the green light, how can I tell if the Express is working if I don't get a good network signal?

Network Setup Question

I have an AEBS 802.11n downstairs where the cable broadband comes into the house and my office is upstairs so I cannot run Ethernet from main AEBS to my office. So I went out today and bought an AEBS so I can connect wirelessly to my main network for internet and then I was going to use that AEBS that is upstairs so I can set up a Gigabit network with the computers in my office for faster file transfers, quicker Time Machine backups, ect. Well the AEBS will not wireless extend my network I have since found out.
So I was thinking if I bought an Airport Express and I wirelessly extended my network with that then could I run an Ethernet cable from the Airport Express to my AEBS in my office and thus have an extended network that is wirelessly connected to my main downstairs AEBS through my Airport Express but then becomes a Gigabit wired network upstairs in my office.
Will this work?

It is definitively possible to extend your WLAN from your ground floor AEBS to the 1st floor AEBS. For example you can do this with WDS. This would be the preferable solution.

Setting up an extended network from extreme with express

Let me just explain what I am trying to do and I would love any help or suggestions.
I have the modem going into the airport extreme. The extreme is about 30 feet away, hard wired and hanging upside down in my hallway (should it be on the wall or upside down on ceiling?) From the airport extreme I have a cable going to a 8 port hub which I have my PS3, XBOX 360, Roku, Apple TV, 3D DVD and two 3D Tv's hooked up so there all hardwired. Another cable is coming from the airport extreme and I want to take that further into the house down the hallway and wire that into an aiport express which would then boost my signal. Is my thought process wrong there? I know I can do all that with my airport extreme, and then putting my airport express within range of the extreme I can wirelessly extend the network but I was thinkning I could have a wifi network from the extreme and then have the airport express hardwired to boost the network instead of it boosting it wirlessly. If I am not making sense let me know. I had the airport express extending the network wirelessly but it was not helping at all. Both are brand new, the extreme and the express. The wireless clients are all new also, new macbook, macbook pro, 2009 iMac, 3 iPhone 4's and 2 iPad 2's so I am pretty sure there all wireless N devices so it should not slow down my network right? I have no techincal background, just learning this from reading forums etc so I am trying to give all information that I can think of thats useful. Please ask any question and I will answer, I just hope I can figure something out. I live in a 1400 square foot apartment so it surprises me that the extreme (new dual band etc) doesnt give me internet everywhere let alone with also having an airport express extending the network. In the back two bedrooms and bathroom which are down the hallway and about 25 feet from the extreme have signal that is so bad that sometimes I cant even read simple RSS feeds let alone download app updates etc on my devices. I have setup the airport extreme to have both 2.4ghz and 5ghz networks and I see them both on all devices except for my iPhone. I have changed the channels for both frequencies by using Tumblr I believe it was and seeing what channels all the networks around me are. My present internet speeds aer 18mbs down and 2 mb up when I am sitting next to the aiport extreme and in direct line of sight. This also holds true on my iMac and laptops in the same room. The laptops in the backrooms get internet and I can do more with them than my iOS devices but even on there I have a hard time streaming etc. I am trying to get internet back there for my sons room, I have a wifi camera that I want to setup in there and so he can use an iPad there (he is 20 months which is why I want the camera) and for my room I have another Roku and Apple TV that barely get signal and are constantly buffering.
I am about to wall mount the exstreme with an airmount and am looking to permanently set everything up so please any suggestions, or hints, or things I need to be aware of please do tell. I would hate to mount everything and run the cables etc and miss something obvious. I appreciate your guys help and thanks for taking the time to read this.

The ceiling will normally provide the best coverage in a typical room. The whole idea here is to limit obstructions between the AirPort Extreme and devices receving the wireless signal. Wall mounting can work well, again with the idea being to provide a clear signal path to devices.
Another cable is coming from the airport extreme and I want to take that further into the house down the hallway and wire that into an aiport express which would then boost my signal.
This type of configuration will provide the best bandwidth for the wireless network, and also allow you to locate the AirPort Express where it work most effectively. You want to configure what is known as a "roaming" network. The AiirPort Express will be configured using the same wireless network name, security setting and password as the AirPort Extreme. It is mandatory that the AirPort Express be configured in Bridge Mode when you do this.

Packet Loss When Extending Network?

Hi there, everyone.
I just purchased the Airport Extreme AC after upgrading to 802.11AC devices in the home. On its own, the Extreme AC performs flawlessly - consistent connections, max speed my ISP provides, no-lag, no studdering, no packet loss. I was dissapointed with the range of the device at the far ends of my home, so I set up my previous generation Airport Extreme to extend the network.
It extends the network fine, speeds are about half of what I get at the source, but the issue is that when it is part of the network, I experience packet loss, anywhere from 3% to 8%. I've tested this multiple times, unplugging, testing, replugging, testing. It happens both wirelessly and through ethernet. The issue is no question caused by the previous gen Airport extending the network.
Any help here would be great!
Setup:
- Motorla Surfboard SB6141
- WAN into Airport Extreme AC
- Previous generation Airport Extreme to extend the network, no special settings.
Don't be afraid to use techincal terminology to help me. I can follow and understand the majority of it, as I'm pretty into all of this.

I'm not aware of anything that has changed in the 802.11ac version of the AirPort base stations that would induce the packet loss that you are seeing with an extended network over using an earlier generation. I am assuming, of course, that you are extending another Apple wireless router ... correct?
Typically I would recommend that you would review the placement of the extending base station to be sure that it is in the optimal spot to reproduce the signal with the greatest amount of bandwidth possible. (Ref: This AirPort User Tip)
