Extend new airport extreme with 2 additional airports

Hi,
Just got a brand new airport extreme (ac model) and this is now my setup:
1. New Extreme is main router
2. Older 4th gen Extreme is extending main Extreme
3. Airport Express N (1st gen) is extending older Extreme
Things seem to work but when using iStumber for testing (normally what I do) I only see 4 networks not 5.  I do not see a network for my Express although it seems that I have a connection there based on signal strength.  Both extenders have green lights (and of course the main), but I'm a bit confused by this.  I have my network with a different name for 5GHz (didn't realize older Extreme would extend both bands but seems to be the case), but I'm only intending to extend the 2.4GHz band with the Express.  Also funny thing is when I'm near my Express in iStumbler the strongest network seems to be the 2.4GHz band from my main router which should be impossible since I'm too far away.  Unless when being extended now the Express is being masked to appear as my main router?  But this was never the case before when I only had one extender...
Ok hope this makes sense can someone please educate me on this thanks for your time,
rc

I thought you could put more than 2
You can....but each extender must communicate directly to the main router.  Apple's extend feature works like the hub and spokes of a wheel.
Your new AirPort Extreme is the "hub". The old Extreme resides at the end of a "spoke", and as such it communicates directly to the "hub".
You can have other extenders at the ends of other "spokes", but each one of them communicates directly to the "hub"......not to another extender at the end of another "spoke".
So even thought Extend is selected it just functions as Join?
Yes, if you try to make it connect to another extender.
Should I just change it to Join?
Up to you. it does not matter.
And now if I can only use the 2 Extremes since they are both dual-band there is no reason to really have separate names is there?
Again, up to you. Things are a lot simpler though, if you use just one network name.
in the Airport Utility overview sometimes all 3 airports are coming stacked on top of each other and sometimes my new Extreme is on top and the older ones are side by side underneath does this make a difference?
First, I hope you are not using AirPort Utility on an iPhone or iPad, because things do not always appear accurately on those devices.
The "new" Extreme" should be at the top of the stack. The old Extreme with a dotted line between the new and old indicates that the old Extreme is connecting using wireless and extending.
If the Express appears side by side with old Extreme, it is extending. If it appears under the old Extreme, then it is connecting to the old Extreme and it is not extending.
If you experiment with the location of the Express, you might be able to get it to extend the new AirPort Extreme. It will help if it is closer to the new Extreme than it is to the old Extreme.

  • Setting up an extended network from extreme with express

    Hi,
Let me just explain what I am trying to do and I would love any help or suggestions.
I have the modem going into the airport extreme.  The extreme is about 30 feet away, hard wired and hanging upside down in my hallway (should it be on the wall or upside down on ceiling?) From the airport extreme I have a cable going to a 8 port hub which I have my PS3, XBOX 360, Roku, Apple TV, 3D DVD and two 3D Tv's hooked up so there all hardwired.   Another cable is coming from the airport extreme and I want to take that further into the house down the hallway and wire that into an aiport express which would then boost my signal.  Is my thought process wrong there? I know I can do all that with my airport extreme, and then putting my airport express within range of the extreme I can wirelessly extend the network but I was thinkning I could have a wifi network from the extreme and then have the airport express hardwired to boost the network instead of it boosting it wirlessly.  If I am not making sense let me know.  I had the airport express extending the network wirelessly but it was not helping at all.  Both are brand new, the extreme and the express.  The wireless clients are all new also, new macbook, macbook pro, 2009 iMac, 3 iPhone 4's and 2 iPad 2's so I am pretty sure there all wireless N devices so it should not slow down  my network right?  I have no techincal background, just learning this from reading forums etc so I am trying to give all information that I can think of thats useful.  Please ask any question and I will answer, I just hope I can figure something out.  I live in a 1400 square foot apartment so it surprises me that the extreme (new dual band etc) doesnt give me internet everywhere let alone with also having an airport express extending the network.  In the back two bedrooms and bathroom which are down the hallway and about 25 feet from the extreme have signal that is so bad that sometimes I cant even read simple RSS feeds let alone download app updates etc on my devices.  I have setup the airport extreme to have both 2.4ghz and 5ghz networks and I see them both on all devices except for my iPhone.  I have changed the channels for both frequencies by using Tumblr I believe it was and seeing what channels all the networks around me are.  My present internet speeds aer 18mbs down and 2 mb up when I am sitting next to the aiport extreme and in direct line of sight.  This also holds true on my iMac and laptops in the same room.  The laptops in the backrooms get internet and I can do more with them than my iOS devices but even on there I have a hard time streaming etc.   I am trying to get internet back there for my sons room, I have a wifi camera that I want to setup in there and so he can use an iPad there (he is 20 months which is why I want the camera) and for my room I have another Roku and Apple TV that barely get signal and are constantly buffering.
I am about to wall mount the exstreme with an airmount and am looking to permanently set everything up so please any suggestions, or hints, or things I need to be aware of please do tell. I would hate to mount everything and run the cables etc and miss something obvious.  I appreciate your guys help and thanks for taking the time to read this.
    basically
modem =  airport extreme, that = (8 port hub)+(wired to aiport express) the express would then put out a wifi network to go along with the aiport extreme.

The extreme is about 30 feet away, hard wired and hanging upside down in my hallway (should it be on the wall or upside down on ceiling?
The ceiling will normally provide the best coverage in a typical room. The whole idea here is to limit obstructions between the AirPort Extreme and devices receving the wireless signal. Wall mounting can work well, again with the idea being to provide a clear signal path to devices.
Another cable is coming from the airport extreme and I want to take that further into the house down the hallway and wire that into an aiport express which would then boost my signal.
This type of configuration will provide the best bandwidth for the wireless network, and also allow you to locate the AirPort Express where it work most effectively. You want to configure what is known as a "roaming" network. The AiirPort Express will be configured using the same wireless network name, security setting and password as the AirPort Extreme. It is mandatory that the AirPort Express be configured in Bridge Mode when you do this.

  • New AP Extreme with new Air shows PHY mode ?as n -- not ac

Option-clicking the menu bar Wifi icon shows that my new Airport Extreme (with my 2012 Air) is showing 802.11 n. I thought it would show 802.11 ac. What gives

I have the 2013 (Haswell) Air and the new, tall Airport Extreme. Option=clicking the WiFi icon in the menu bar shows that the PHY Mode is 802.11n with a transmit rate not higher than 150, and often lower.
For some reason, I was able to see the PHY Mode as AC last night, and it showed a transmit rate of 867, expected for AC.
However, now all that I see in PHY Mode is 802.11n
    I'd like to see the speed I paid for . . . .
A speed of 150 means it has joined the 2.4ghz wireless..
The AC signal is only transmitted on 5ghz..
Give the 5ghz wireless a different name to 2.4ghz.. so you can select it in the Air. But it might still not show the full speed or might well not work.. the apple equipment is designed to swap bands automagically according to signal which depends on the location. Sometimes though it is over complicated.. and easier to just pick it yourself.
AC signal probably still will not have the range that 2.4ghz does.. although that depends on if Apple amplified 2.4ghz as well as 5ghz.

  • Can I Set-up new airport Extreme w/PC?

I know the old APs you could not setup with a PC...can you with the new Airport Extremes? My wifes office is looking at routers and I am pushing this one but they are worried if her Mac is not in the office they would have no way of changing settings etc.
So are they out of luck or is there some official (or hacky?) way of setting up and/or changing the new AP Extreme with windows?
Also I assume print sharing works with PCs over the Airport network right?

I know the old APs you could not setup with a PC...
Not true. The round 802.11b/g AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) and AirPort Express (AX) could be configured from Windows using the Windows version of the "AirPort Admin Utility".
...can you with the new Airport Extremes?
Yes you can configure the new square 802.11n AEBS using Windows. The Windows version of the "AirPort Utility" is on the disc shipped with the AEBS.

  • My new airport extreme transmits at low rates (0-54)and is intermittent? Help!

I need help figuring out why my new 6th generation airport extreme signal is transmitting at a low rate (0-54) and when streaming the signal goes in and out? My equipment is as follows... I have a moterolla extreme DOCsis 3.0 modum, comcast 30 mpbs, and new apple extreme with current airport utility 7.7.1. Any ideas or troubleshooting tips?

When you created your wireless network with the Airport Extreme, did you select having your wireless network backwards compatible with "b/g" devices? If your wireless network was created as "N" compatible for "N" compatible wireless cards only, an iPhone will not be able to connect to your wireless network since the iPhone's wireless card is not "N" compatible.

  • Just installed a new Airport Exteme.  Set up was no problem however we have  3 IPads and 1 Mac laptop and cannot get all devices to access Internet. Every reset of the airport gives a different combination of devices allowed access. Any ideas as to why?

Just installed a new airpot extreme with a modem to use as a wireless system. Setup was successful however with 3 iPads and one laptop we cannot get all devices access to Internet. Each reset of airport extreme results in a different combination of devices that successfully connect. Any ideas as to why?

    Well, this is interesting,
Let me tell you coulpe of things I noticed:
    - Are you using LEAP as the EAP method? some config examples illustrate configuriong using LEAP with WEP keys. Forget this and use WPA2-AES.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/wireless/ps4570/products_configuration_example09186a00801c40b6.shtml
    - in some AP configurations (AP1 for example) I can see that:
    wlccp authentication-server client any method_Users
This means that the wlccp client authentication will use the method called method_Users. Let us see what is configured with this method:
aaa authentication login method_Users group Users
This shows us that the method method_Users uses the server group named Users.
let us see what is configured withe the group Users:
    aaa group server radius Users
NOTHING!! it is empty!! so when a client tries to connect it will try to autheticate it against the radius server but the radius server group that it needs to check is empty.
so I think you need to either use the correct method under which the server is configured with the wlccp statement. OR you need to configure the method_Users with correct user group that contains a server.
Check and let me know if that works.

    Amjad

  • How does one sync the new time capsule with the old airport extreme and airport express in order to extend range?

How does one sync the new time capsule with the old airport extreme and airport express in order to extend range?

    Thanks for the additional information.
Unfortunately, the AirPort Utility application in the Lion and Mountain Lion operating systems, which is used to configure the new Time Capsule does not support the older versions of the products that you have.
Even if it did, there are no settings on the older AirPorts to "Extend a wireless network", so they are not compatible with the new Time Capsule if you intend to extend the network only using wireless connections.
If you have the ability to connect each AirPort to the Time Capsule using a permanent wired Ethernet cable connection, it might be possible to use a complicated workaround to install an older version of AirPort Utility to configure the older AirPorts to work with the new Time Capsule.
If you have another Mac there that is using the Leopard or Snow Leoapard operating system, things would likely be simpler. I have not done this type of procedure to mix a new Time Capsule with older AirPorts, so I would not be able to say whether this would work or not.

  • CAN"T EXTEND RANGE OF NEW AIRPORT EXTREME WITH OLD AIRPORT EXPRESS

    Hello Everyone,
I am having a heck of a time getting my new network setup with this new 802.11n Airport Extreme... Here is what I currently have going on:
I have a G5 1.8 it is my main computer and in ROOM #1... Connected to it is my NEW AIRPORT EXTREME via an Ethernet cable to one of the available ports. Also connected to the NEW AIRPORT EXTREME is my CABLE MODEM... This works great, It is setup and I have internet via Ethernet... I CAN EVEN CONNECT IN ROOM #2 with a PC and an Apacer wireless adapter...
    Here is the problem
When I try to add an Airport Express V6.3 to extended the range of my network it can NEVER seem to connect to the network. I have checked the option to allow extension of the NEW AIRPORT in AIRPORT UTILITY and tried both with WEP security and with NO SECURITY... I cannot get the Express to extend the range of my network period... It has an error when joining the network???
    Can Anyone Please Help Me?
PS. The reason to extend the network is so I can use the Notebooks in ROOM #3 and so a TIVO can see the Network! It is not far away!
    G5 1.8 (2003)   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Also am having problems with my roomates HP Laptop... It connects for only a few seconds/minutes then has an issue... Really shady??? Any Ideas? He is Running Windows XP

  • Can I use my 2010 AirPort Extreme as a range extender with a new AirPort Extreme?

I want to use an existing AirPort Extreme (2010 model) with a new AirPort Extreme to extend the range and signal strength into a shop. They are different designations, one n and the other ac. Are they compatible. I need to know before I buy the new router.

The new AirPort Extreme will provide an ac,n,g,b compatible wireless signal.
The existing AirPort Extreme can be configured to extend the n,g,b signal, but it cannot extend the ac signal.

  • Can I use an old Airport Extreme as an extender with a new Airport Express

Hi All,  I have Verizon Fios and the data line runs into my bedroom.  I purchased a new Airport Express today to replace the Airport Extreme (from 2006).  Can I use the old Airport Extreme as an extender (I'd like to set it up in the basement as I get poor connectivity there).  I tried using the Airport Utility - Other WiFi Devices to find the Airport Extreme, but it's not registering. Is what I'm attempting possible?  If so, how do I set it up?

Can I use the old Airport Extreme as an extender
Is this the "round" or "dome" shaped AirPort Extreme?
If yes, then it is not possible to have the AirPort Extreme wirelessly "extend" the signal from the AirPort Express.
However, the older AirPort Extreme can probably be set up to provide more wireless signal coverage if it will connect back to the LAN <--> port on the AirPort Express using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection.
In this case, the setup of the older AirPort Extreme will require that you have an older version of AirPort Utility installed on your computer. If it is a Mac, then the Mac must be running Leopard (10.5.x), Snow Leopard (10.6.x), or a PC with AirPort Utility could be used to set up and configure the older Extreme.
f you have the "square" or "flat" version of the AirPort Extreme, then everything becomes much easier. Post back if you do.

  • Extending an existing wireless network with a new Airport Extreme(802.11n)

Is it possible to extrend a existing wireless network comprised on a Airport Extreme (g) and a Airport Express with a new Airport Extreme (n) ? and possibly accesss an airdisk? Have tried settng channel to the same (1) but no worky.
I have had real problems (at least 2 hours with Apple Care to no avail) at getting the new Airport Extreme(n) to connect to the internet (Ozemail/iinet) with PPOE. Authentication when changed to occur at ADSL modem and produces no errors (green light) but no internet still through AE(n). Not Hardware either as both ADSL modem and AE(n) have been changed.
So as a last ditch attempt, thought I might try extending the preexisting network that works fine so I can access an AirDisk.
    Any reponses appreciated.

Search this forum for "WDS". Since I am having massive problems myself right now, I can only tell you: Try the two methods mentioned in this thread:

  • I have replaced my airport extreme with a new airport time capsule and want to know how I can set up my extreme to extend/strengthen my Wi-Fi?

I have replaced my airport extreme with a new airport time capsule and want to know how I can set up my extreme to extend/strengthen my Wi-Fi?

Start with a "hard reset" (see below) then use AirPort Utility to configure it.
When asked what you want to do with it, indicate that you want it to add to an existing network, similar to the following screenshot.
Follow the prompts that will eventually lead you to the words "wirelessly extend..." as shown.
To "hard reset" an AirPort Base Station: make sure it's powered up, then press and hold its tiny reset button and keep it depressed for five to ten seconds, long enough for its LED to flash amber rapidly. Release the reset button. Then, the LED will glow amber steadily for about a minute. Then, it will flash amber, slowly, about once every second or two, waiting for you to configure it with AirPort Utility.

  • I had an Airport Extreme with and Airport Express used as a extender. My Airport Extreme died, so I bought a new one and when I installed it I renamed my network.

Now my new Airport Extreme doesn't see my Airport Express. Can I fix this?

The easiest way to do this is to reset your airport express to the factory configuration/default by unplugging it and then holding down the small reset button on the back, plugging it back in. Once the amber LED begins to flash quickly you can release it. after a minute, when the amber led is flashing slowly you can bring up the latest version of the Airport utility. When it starts, it will connect you to your network and indicate that there is a new device that needs to be set up. Simply follow the prompts and answer yes when it asks if you want this new device to extend your network.. It will then do all of the configuring for you.
Pretty cool..  I just got a new Airport Express and it installed perfectly the first time. If you have problems post back.

  • How do I extend my existent airport extreme network by addition of a 2nd airport extreme?

How do I extend my existent Airport Extreme network by addition of a 2nd Airport Extreme?

Can you clarify which version of the AirPort Extreme that you have now along with the model that you plan to use as the second device?
The older "round" AirPort Exteme or the newer "square" version with rounded corners?
Are you planning to extend using wireless only.....or by connecting the AirPort Extremes using a wired Ethernet connection?

  • Does new Airport Extreme slow down when used with Airport Express?

    Maybe this is self-evident.
If get the new Airport extreme and use an old airport express to extend it, will signal slow down to the old speed?
Does the AE have a greater range? Perhaps I don't need the Express to extend.
I live in NYC and there are so many signals in the air. It seems like having the additional airport helps keep me connected.
    Thanks.

The airport express is g technology not n technology, so it will be at least as slow as your old network. Also, I'm not sure but I think the the range will be a bit longer than with the old g system, but does not have the full potential of an n system.
I've set up my new system but none of my machines are n capable. I extended the system using my old expresses. The speed of the system is no greater than what it was before the n.
I bought the system to upgrade my technology because everytime my Applecare runs out, I get a new computer which isn't too far down the road. I've purchased an Apple TV which will also work better with the n technology when I upgrade. It's either buy it now or buy it later. I'm also hoping that some third party like Belkin will develop a PCIX card to provide n technology to those of my computers that aren't currently n capable. I'm sure there is many like me out there.
