  • How do I add an Airport Express to extend the range of my WIFI network with my iMac as a base station?

    Hi people
I need help to configure a new Airport Express only to extend the range of my WIFI network.
My ethernet cable from modem is connected directly in my iMac and I am sharing the internet by WIFI inside home very fine.
Now, I would like connect my devices on my garden on backyard.
I can't move my iMac from their place and i just want add a Airport Express between the iMac and backyard to extend the range of WIFI.
But I can't to configure to that. On Airport Utility appear the Airport Express connected directly to internet globe, but don't work.
So, what can I do? What is wrong?
    Thanks all and best regards.
    Carlos Sgrillo, from Brazil.

The AirPort cannot do what you ask.
The Airport needs to connect to a modem, or another router......not to a computer.
The Express can only extend a wireless signal that has been provided by another Apple router.

I am trying to connect a NetGear Wifi Range Extender to my existing Wifi. I have an Airport Extreme Base Station and I am also connected to a Vonage Phone Router. Any help would be appreciated?
The Apple update Firmware for my Airport Extreme Base Station does not update for some reason? Help?
Additionally, I have an older version Airport Express that does not update with the newer Airport Utility Version 6.3 and asks me to download 5.6 to update? Is this worth it?
    Thanks

The netgear is not going to work very well.. and not at all unless it is universal wireless extender.. you cannot use WDS method.
If it does support universal wireless then make sure the airport uses a rational SMB compatible wireless name.. not an apple name which is 35 characters long with spaces and illegal characters like apostrophe.
So nice AE name.. AEwifi and actually while you are trying.. fruitlessly to do this.. use AE24ghz and AE5ghz (so different names on the different bands)
Assuming your AE is gen3 or greater.
You should also fix the wireless channel at least for 2.4ghz since the netgear is probably only going to repeat 2.4ghz so use channel 11, as a trial.
And use no wireless security as a test.. if that works.. then use WPA1 & 2.. as often old equipment using WPA2 is not compatible.
If it fails with simple name.. fixed channel and no security. Sorry it is not compatible at all.. it happens.
If your AE is G wireless or earlier model.. really the time has come for replacement.
If your Express is G wireless model it is not supported.. and is too old to bother with expect I guess if you want to run audio to a speaker.
You must use older 5.6 utility to do this.. so do you have a computer running older OS.. up to Mountain Lion it is easy to install with a bit of manipulation.. later is much harder .. or windows computer anywhere or available to you.

I bought the Airport Extreme because I thought it would increase the range of the WiFi signal in my house. I have a DSL modem (also Wifi) and there are parts of the house that do not seem to have a strong Wifi signal. The Airport Extreme does not seem to be increasing my Wifi signal strength? Any thoughts on what I could be doing wrong? I am able to connect to it, etc. Just thought the strength would be better.

The broadcast power of all wireless routers and devices is limited by law.....and all manufacturers run their routers full blast.....so the relative signal strength of wireless routers from one manufacturer to another will tend to be remarkably similar.....despite the fancy advertising claims.
You may want to consider adding another AirPort Extreme to "extend" the signal strength in your home. If you decide to do this, the "extending" Extreme would normally need to be located at a point that is approximately half the distance from your "main" AirPort Extreme and the general area that needs more wireless coverage.

  • Time Capsule as bridge, want to extend range with airport express

I have a Motorola Surfboard SBG6580 a time capsule (3rd gen) and an airport express (2nd gen). I currently have the time capsule connected to the surfboard router by ethernet and have it iset to bridge mode. i would like to use the airport express to extend the network because as i get to the back of my apartment the range of the wifi signal starts to degrade. however when i try to extend the network with the express i am unable to.
both apple routers are on latest firmware
would there be any alternative way to configure these 3 devices for best performance / range

    @blaqink
    Have you figured this out?
I am looking to accomplish the similar feat. I have the Motorola Surfboard SBG6580, Time Capsule (Gen2) and Airport Express. I would like to use the Motorola as the main wireless signal because it appears to be better. But I still use the TC for backups and time machine, then I use the AX to extend the signal.
So, how can I use these 3 in unison? TC connected via ethernet to Motorola and set in bridge mode? Then extend the AX signal? Any detail setup info you can provide will help..thanks!

  • Extend range of mac mini shared interent connection via Airport

Hello all - Hopefully I can get some help with extending the range of my internet connection
Currently my internet connection is plugged into my mac mini via ethernet and shared via Wifi. I'd like to extend this connection via my airport express but can't quite figure out how to do this. When I try to manually configure the airport express to extend the range of the wifi signial the airport express becomes unrecognizable. and I get error code 10057 in airport utility.
    Any help?
    Thanks
    Keith

    well,
if your ISP locks your internet down to your MAC address it is very likely you will not be able to share it. They have means of stopping you from sharing the internet connection - as i.e. most hotels do.
Did you manage to share your connection this way with any other device like smart phone etc?
Why don't you speak to your ISP about the problem is slightly beyond me.

  • How to extend range of my wireless network with an Airport Express connected by ethernet with Airport Utility 6.0

    Hi everyone,
I have AirPort Express 802.11n (1st Gen) firmware 7.6.1, that is connected to my main wifi base station (a TimeCapsule) by ethernet. I would like to extend the range of the Wifi Network but am not clear on how to do so using the new interface of Airport Utlity 6.0.
Does anyone have any tips on how to do this?
    BR
    AK

    Hi Everyone!
Many thanks for the tips. I have downloaded 5.6 and have set my Airport Express in the "Extend a wireless network" mode. I was still having a few problems with the quality of the wifi connection in different parts of my apartment (by no means a very large one, but walls seem to be made of extra dense concrete here in Singapore) and went out and bought a few powerline adapters by TP Link (http://www.tp-link.sg/products/details/?categoryid=1862&model=TL-PA211#spec).
If you don't mind a slightly long post, I would be very grateful for any tips:
My setup is now as follows:
    Main room
Time Capsule - connected to a Cisco DPC3925 Modem (http://www.cisco.com/web/consumer/support/modem_DPC3925.html) both connected to a TP Link adapter 1.
iMac - connected via Ethernet to TP Link adapter 2 and wifi enabled
Airport Express 1 - connected by Ethernet to TimeCapsule (and thus TP Link adapter 1) used to stream audio to a stereo that doesn't have an optical cable input. Since it is an Ethernet connection, I have wifi turned off.
Apple TV 1 - connected by Ethernet to TimeCapsule (and thus TP Link adapter 1)
    Bedroom A
Airport Express 2 - connected via ethernet to TP Link adapter 3
    Bedroom B -
Apple TV 2 - connected by Ethernet to a TP Link adapter 4
After following the tips on setting up the extended wifi network, I find that when I use a wireless client (e.g. iPad, Macbook air, etc) in either Bedroom B or Bedroom C (both don't have wifi in the room) the connection is very poor. Even more odd is that the connection in Bedroom A, one that does have Airport Express 2. To be clear when I mean very poor, I mean Skype/facetime skips frames and freezes... this doesn't happen when I am in the main living area.
I would be very grateful for tips on how to set up the most robust network given the configuration above. Specifically, I am wondering about:
When I select Extend a wireless network option on Airport Utility 5.6 the summary page states that it is connecting using "Wireless Network" vs what I would expect it to say "Ethernet connection".
Is there any advice on whether to enable 5Ghz network and if so, should I try to use that for the various wifi clients?
Does anyone know if I can somehow use Apple products to extend the reach of the Cisco DPC3925? Frustratingly the signal is quite strong (compared to Apple routers), but I cannot properly stream audio/video if that wifi network is used (as my iMac that hosts the content is on the Apple one... and I'd have to walk over to switch it to the Cisco one).
Any other tips would be much appreciated!
    Cheers!

  • Extending range

Hello,  I am hoping that some kind techie can advise me.
My set up is that I have an ADSL modem connected to my Time Capsule which is used as the router.   I have three Airport Express units to extend the range of the wifi arounbd my property.  However, because of the nature of my property, the signal does not quite reach right to the end of the building where I need it.
I would like to make best use of my Time Capsule, I am happy to install a second router, but I would like to try and keep a single network else everytime we move around, we will need to switch networks  on the computers.
I cannot get a cable right to the offending room is difficult because of the nature of the buidling, but i can get a cable about 60% of the way there.
I could use a Powerline router, but I am them not sure if I would be able to then connect the Time Capsule and make use of its wifi capabilities.
All suggestions (apart from moving house!) as to the best way to configure the network gratefully received
    Thanks
    A

Hi and very many thanks for your help and I understand most of that.  I think I would need to use the new router as the primary router as that can also act as the router for the PowerLine adaptors.
Not so, you do not need nor even want a wireless connection to the power line adapters.. you simply plug them in .. one at the main router and one at the Wireless AP point.
Personal opinion dinky toy dlinks are not suitable for stepping stones in the garden, door stops.. they are not heavy enough or boat anchors.. so unsure what use they would be.
If I use a Powerline WiFi Router, (probably, the DLink DHP1565 Powerline WiFi Router), connected to ADSL modemIf I then set as follows:
    IP: 10.0.1.254
    WPA2: Wpa2Password
    SID: NetworkName
    Channel: 13
    DHCP: on
Powerline 500MBPS adaptor plugged into mains power in Garage
Linked to above via house mains power circuit
TC plugged into Powerline adaptor via Ethernet cable
    Static IP: 10.0.1.1
    WPA2: Wpa2Password – same as above
SID: NetworkName – same as above
    Channel: Auto
    DHCP: off
Should I set the TC to ‘Extend Network’ or ‘Create New Network’ (but use the same as SID and WPA2 keys the same?
Will I then be able to link TC to Airport Express unit in offending room?
    Thanks
    A
    Or any router...
    All of that should work.
If you want to extend wireless set the TC to Allow extend network. You can then link to AE but it is much better to use the TC as the main router for this setup.
Up to you .. the are infinite variations on the theme.

How can I set up mhy Airport Express to extend my Time Capsule wifi wirelessly
Assuming that you have the model A1264 or A1392 version of the Express, it must be located where it can receive a strong wireless signal from the Time Capsule to be able to extend it correctly.
A good general location would be a point that is about half way between the Time Capsule and other area that needs more wireless coverage.
You will use AirPort Utility on your computer to configure the Express. An iPhone or iPad could be used as well.
We can provide more help....if you need it....but we'll need to know what version of AirPort Utility that you are using on your computer....or whether you want to use an iPhone or iPad to setup the Express.

    Yes, that is correct.
Did you have the instructions that came with your Airport Extreme?  Are you sure you have it setup properly?  Here is the setup guide:
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/airportextreme_802.11n_userguide.pdf
Ensure you have everything setup properly.  Once you do this and if you are still having trouble, follow Star's instructions.

  • How to calculate query value on extended range of data

    Hi,
This is my first post, so let me greet all forum users. I'm reading the forum for few weeks and I'm really impressed with the force of this community.
My question is based on some real problems but I'll ask in general:
In a BEx query - is it possible (and how?) in a result cell to obtain value that is calculated based on some more extended range of infoprovider records than it results from all the characteristics related to that cell?
The question is somehow about a reverse case to the restriction in Selection. I'm asking about a kind of 'extension' of selection.
Example for the question follows (it is somehow simple, I put it here just to picture the problem, note: the question is more general!)
    cube: ch: 0CALMONTH, 0MATERIAL, 0PLANT
kf: 0QUANTITY (ex. of outgoing deliveries)
What I need is to obtain in any query the SUM(0QUANTITY) over all 0PLANT (this can lead to knowing the 'activity' of the specific plant by calculating the share. that activity can be calculated at diferent level of detail).
The 'dream' query would look like:
    rows: 0CALMONTH, 0MATERIAL, 0PLANT
    cols: 0QUANTITY  SUM_OVER_0PLANT
    resulting in ex:
    0CALMONTH  0MATERIAL  0PLANT  0QUANTITY  SUM_OVER_0PLANT  PLANT_ACTIVITY
    2005.01    00001      P100    10         30               1/3
    2005.01    00001      P200    20         30               2/3
    2005.01    00002      P100    30         70               3/7
    2005.01    00002      P200    40         70               4/7
    2005.02    00001      P100    50         110              5/11
    2005.02    00001      P200    60         110              6/11
    2005.02    00002      P100    70         150              7/15
    2005.02    00002      P200    80         150              8/15
    after removing drill 0MATERIAL:
    0CALMONTH  0PLANT  0QUANTITY  SUM_OVER_0PLANT  PLANT_ACTIVITY
    2005.01    P100    40         100              4/10
    2005.01    P200    60         100              6/10
    2005.02    P100    120        260              12/26
    2005.02    P200    140        260              14/26
    after removing drill 0CALMONTH:
    0PLANT  0QUANTITY  SUM_OVER_0PLANT  PLANT_ACTIVITY
    P100    160        360              16/36
    P200    200        360              20/36
For this specific case I investigated several solutions:
    1) using formula & function SUMCT (Result). This has a drawback that Result for 0PLANT must be present in right place (bottom level) in the resulting query. I don't like this.
    2) SUM can be directly precalculated in the cube. Well, I'd prefer Bex only...
Please keep in mind also following:
    1) there may be a need to refer to the data that is outside prompt/filtering/restricting range.
    2) I want to preserve all the OLAP freedom, so all the solution should be a query with some tricky formula/kf/??? to be used by user in any situation and producing right result.
I hope I'm not demanding to much...
(now after this long example please have a look at the question again!)
    Regards,
    Mirek

    Hi Ashwin,
while using SUMCT I loose the freedom of OLAP. SUMCT calculates properly SUM_OVER_0PLANT only when the 0PLANT is the lowest drillin level. If this is not the case (ie. some other ch is the lowest level or 0PLANT results are suppressed) the approach won't provide right result.
sure I will reward all helpfull posts.
    regards,
    Mirek

You need to enable VTP V3 on all the switches. If one of your switch is VTPV1 capable only, it will not able to inter-operate with VTP V3.
Please look at these guidelines for 2960.
