Extend the network for airport extreme

Problem overview. I have a timeWarner cable modem that has both wired and wireless output supporting four external ethernet ports. I want to extend my network (bridge) to use the extreme in another room and connect other hardware that has only ethernet capabity only. My test configuration consist of an Imac wired to TimeWarner Modem and a stand alone laptop (Macbook pro). I can connect to both the wireless and wired configuration for TIme warner with out a problem.
If I take the airport extreme, and connect teh Timewarner ethernet output to the WAN input and the laptop to the free extreme ports, then I am able to add capability where the extreme can create a new wireless network and the laptop can gain access to the internet via the new wireless an wired network fine.
This was done as an initial test to verify the extreme was working but really is not what I want. I want a bridge connection. Therefore
1) Using airport express I changed the wireless settings to Extend the Network.
2) Removed the WAN cable from the extreme.
3) Was able to connect to the extreme using the airport utility and show the status as an extended network.
Overview
The network shows to be the ssid of my local network (Walmart)
The IP Address is 192.168.0.6
The serial number is COPJ900JDM72
Version 7.6.1
Status: Extended Network.
Now when I hook my Macbook pro to the ethernet port into 1 of three ports on the extreme.
The ip address shows 169.254.98.37
I never acquire a valid IP address to connect to the network from the Macbook Pro.
What am I doing wrong?

Hi - if I understand correctly, you want to connect the Express wirelessly to the TWC modem/router and then connect your MBP to the ethernet port - is this true?

    This has been automated in the v6 utility. I am used to doing it manually in v5 utility which is also fairly easy.

    Note.
    You cannot extend the guest network unless everything is up to date 7.6.3 firmware. And that is only with the TC as the main router in the network.
    All apple routers can be configured as the main wireless or as the extend wireless.. so don't worry if a post uses express or extreme or TC.. they are for wireless, the same thing.

  • Extending the range of Airport Extreme in house with walls

    Any sugggestions on the best way to extend the range of Airport Extreme? The base unit is located in an office at one end of a house. I would like to be able to connect from rooms at the other end of the house, some 70' away. There are three walls betgween the base and the far room.

    I have essentially the same problem, except that our router is a Netgear product (NOT my choice, my husband is a PC guy). I get a great connection when my G5 is on the desk, but if I put it under the desk (which is where I really, really want it) I get nothing.
    Will an Airport Express do anything for me? Or do I need to get an AirPort Extreme router? If I get an Airport Extreme router and locate it closer to my computer can I set it up to work with the same cable internet service we have the Netgear connected to? Or do I have to have a totally separate service? My computer is downstairs, the Netgear is up. Moving it is not an option. Our house is wired for cat 5 throughout. (No idea if this matters, I'm clueless on this stuff). Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

    Only the M8799LL/A & M9397LL/A models of the AirPort Extreme Base Stations (AEBS) provide an external antenna port which you can plug the ExtendAIR Omni.

  • Extending the range of Airport Extreme 802.11n

    I have 2 Airport Extremes 802.11n. One of the is connected to a DSL modem and it works fine. I have been trying to use the other one to extend the network, but have not been successful.
    I used the exact steps in the manual (Designing Airport Network) published by Apple. The steps I used (several times) were under "Extending the Range of an 802.11n Network".
    Whenever I compete the steps and update the base station, the one that I want to use as the extension (not connected to the internet) disappears from the Airport Utility Application and the base station blinks the orange light. I did reset the base station and tried the guide several times but no success.
    I am doing something wrong or this manual is not complete. Any help from you guys will be most appreciated.

    I have the same problem. I didn't have this issue with the 802.11g version. Are you using the base station in "bridge" mode? Because when I used the "n" basestation in DHCP/NAT mode, it worked fine. Unfortunately, I needed to change to bridge mode for reliability issues with my service provider.
    Now I have the same issue as you.

  • Extend existing network with Airport extreme and 3 airport express.

    I want to extend an existing network (thomson TG787v) with an airport extreme (MD031Z/A) with 3 or 4 airport express(MC14Z/A)
    The thomson is the router from the provider and must be used. The building is an old mansion with a lot of brick walls
    I tried to connect the extreme with an ethernet cable (in bridge mode) and then connect the airport express in a line to have wifi in all rooms of the mansion.
    But somehow the airport extremes cannot extend the network.
    Can anyone tell me how to setup the apple devices to make this work?

    This is the correct.
    and then connect the airport express in a line to have wifi in all rooms of the mansion.
    Apple's "extend a wireless network" feature will only allow you to "extend" the signal one time. So, the first Express would connect to the AirPort Extreme wirelessly and extend the signal.
    But, you cannot "extend" the signal a second or third time. Each AirPort Express must be located so that it connects directly to the AirPort Extreme.  In other words, each AirPort Express must be located about the same distance from the AirPort Extreme.
    Another way of thinking about his is to visualize the hub and spokes of a wheel. The AirPort Extreme would be located at the "hub".  Each AirPort Express would be located at then end of a "spoke".  As such, each AirPort Express communicates directly to the AirPort Extreme.....not to another AirPort Express at the end of another hub.
    You may need to consider installing Ethernet cable to each location where you will need an AirPort Express and configure the network that way.  Performance wise, this is a much better way to "extend" the network.

  • Extended router's network for Airport extreme. Works well with MacbookPro. I can print with notebook with XP SP3 and, I can see the USB-harddisc in the Airport service program but, I cannot use it. I have set filesharing etc. What do I do wrong?

    I connected the Airport Extreme wireless to the existing network of my router. At the Airport there is connected via USB a Printer and three hard discs. All works well on my MacBook Pro - I can print and use the hard discs. On my notebook and my desktop, both with XP-SP3 I can use the printer only. In the Airport service program - manual set up - hard discs I can see the drives with the correct names but I cannot work with it. I don't find neithe the Airport Extreme nor the drives in the Windows Explorer. Of course I've set 'filesharing' etc. What do I do wrong? Where is the mistake in the set up?

    Resetting the password you will need to do for each device... the utility cannot even see those old units.
    So you will have to do it for each one.. think it through.. because as you change passwords the others will lose connection.. so start from the express which are wireless extending .. change those first.. and go back up the chain.. as each one changes it will drop off the network.. until you reach extreme and change that. Then you might need to reboot the whole network to get everything talking again. If something goes wrong.. just pluck that one out of the mix and plug in ethernet.. reset and redo the setup. That is my preferred method anyway.. do everything in isolation one by one. By ethernet and then nothing goes wrong.

    You cannot partition a network disk. And apple provided no tools for it in the TC itself. You can pull the disk out and partition it but that voids your warranty. (although done with care who is to know).

    Mixing TM and data on the TC is worth planning carefully. They don't necessarily sit happily together.

  • HT1515 The wifi router I use to connect to the internet is in the room directly above me. I am trying to use my airport express to extend the network for better coverage down here. It works fine with the setting "join a network" but will not extend it.

    I have 2 airport expresses. The issue is the same with both of them. What am I doing wrong?

    I assume that you already have one Express configured to "join" the network.
    Power up the other Express for a few minutes, then hold in the reset button firmly on the back of the device for 10 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
    Connect an Ethernet cable from the LAN <--> port on the "joining" Express to the WAN "O" port on the second Express.
    Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click Other WiFi Devices
    Click on AirPort Express
    Click the Other Options button and select the option to Create a new wireless network.
    Follow the guided steps, and ignore the step about powering off the modem and restarting.
    Once the Express restarts, it will still have a slow, blinking amber light. Open AirPort Utility and click on the amber dot, then select the option to ignore the Double NAT error so the Express will display a green light.
    Select the wireless network that you named during the setup of the second Express and enter the password to connect to the network.

  • Help: Using Airport Express to extend the range of Airport Extreme

    I am trying to use the Airport Express to extend the range of the network created by my Airport Extreme. The Express works in terms of streaming music from iTunes on the PC connected to th Extreme.
    However, I am trying to run a short Cat-5 cable out of the Express to a nearby PC in order to have access to the internet. If the Express is recognized by the Extreme and can play music through connected stereo cables, why can I get an internet connection through the LAN port..??
    Here's a real basic representation of my connections...
    Cable Modem >>-- Cat5 -->> Airport Extreme >>-- Wireless -->> Airport Express >>-- Cat5 -->>PC#2

    To wirelessly extend the range between two AirPorts, you need to configure them in a Wireless Distribution System (WDS).
    To facilitate the WDS set up, try the following:
    o Perform a "hard" reset on the AirPort Extreme Base Stations & a "factory default" reset on the AirPort Express Base Stations (AX) before setting up the WDS.
    o Place the base stations within near proximity of each other during the set up phase, and then relocate them to their desired locations when complete.
    o To avoid having to "switch" wireless networks during the WDS setup, attach each of the remote/relay base station, via an Ethernet cable, to the main base station. Of course, this would be dependent on the AirPort types used for the main/relays/remotes.
    o Be sure to jot down the MAC addresses for each of the base stations to be used in the WDS as these will be required during the setup.
    o When enabling wireless encryption, configure the relay/remote base stations first and the main base station last.

    I have a 4th generation Airport Exteme (n) and an older Airport Express (g) and would like to use the Airport Express to extend my network to the other end of my house, where the signal is very weak. When I tried to set it up tonight, my Airport Extreme disappeared all together and I had to do a hard reset to get it back. I am using a macbook pro 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running OS X 10.7.2.  Are there any current insturctions to do this?

    I had the same set up you do. I did not have success with the Express g. And in my case I had much better success when I sold the Express g on ebay, bought an Express N from the refurb store, so it only cost around $20 get something that is much more reliable.
    I quickly tried to find an Apple Support tech note for you but didn't, post back if you need more.

  • Extending wireless network using Airport Extreme

    I am thinking about using another Airport Extreme to extend my wireless signal.
    I am curious if the ethernet ports will be rendered dead in the Airport Extreme like they are in the Airport Express untis when you choose extend.
    I know I could go to a Roaming network but that is not the question for this setup.
    I am hoping that I can use the ethernet ports for other things where the Extending Airport Extreme is as I have some devices I also want to hook up.
    I have read something about this in the past but can't seem to find the answer now.
    I already have one fairly new Extreme (square style) and am thinking about getting the newest version with the different and taller case.
    Again, I would rather use the Extend feature rather then a Roaming because it would be difficult to run wires.
    Also note: no electrical ethernet adapters either using the wall plugs. Not interested in that setup.

    I have 3 Airport Express units that when in "Join a wireless network" the ethernet port can be enabled.
    However, when I choose "Extend a wireless network" I no longer have that choice of allowing ethernet clients, it changes to only "Allow wireless clients". That's what has me curious and confused.
    I haven't tried plugging anything into the units that are extended so I can't verify the ethernet ports work or not.
    They are the b/g/n units but not the newest models. The models before that.
    The window says it is an Airport Express 802.11n model.
    The Airport Extreme is also 802.11n (4th generation)
    All my base stations are running 7.6.4

  • Losing the network over airport extreme

    We have an airport extreme base station (802.11g) that is nearing 6 years of use. We occassionally lose the network connection to our machine from our airport extreme, both on the ethernet connection and the wireless. To get it back, we disconnect power from the base station, and then re-power it. The base stations resets and we reconnect.
    However, this past month we've had to perform this operation more often, and it has been four or five time this weekend alone. This last reset was three since the previous reset.
    I'm wondering if my base station is dying of old age? How can I effectively troubleshoot this issue? The manual doesn't seem to cover my symptoms.

    Welcome to the discussion area, Ray!
    The symptoms you are describing indicate that you are likely picking up wireless interference from another source...perhaps another wireless network, cordless phone or security system...which is causing the network to slow down and lock up.
    The first thing to check as a culprit is your cordless phones (if you have them). Pick a time when you can leave them off for a day or so and see if your network performance improves. If it does, you likely have your answer. Move the phones as far away as possible from the router or any computers. Or, you may need to look at new phones that do not use the 2.4 GHz band that wireless networks do.
    You won't be able to do much about the issue if it is a neighbor's phone that is causing the problems. In the past, my neighbor...across the street...could literally bring my network to a standstill instantly if he was in his front yard talking on his cordless phone. Luckily, he moved.
    To get an idea if there may be other wireless networks near you that are interfering with your network, download a utility like iStumbler. Look for other wireless networks and note the channel they are using. Then set your wireless network to a channel that is as far away as possible from other networks.
    Unfortunately, iStumber cannot detect a "hidden" network if a user has chosen the option on his router to not allow his network name to be displayed. And, iStumbler cannot detect nearby wireless security systems at the neighbors' or cordless phones, so it will be somewhat of a guessing game to figure out where the problems might be coming from.

  • Can't pull off the antenna for AirPort Extreme Card

    Hi,
    I was trying to install an AirPort Extreme card on my G5 iMac...where I couldn't physically pull the tip of the antenna off the gray plastic base...
    I tried turning it to the right and left, but it didn't help me out. Seems like I need a knack or something??

    The first obvious thing to try is to move the AirPort Extreme as far away as possible from the headphones. You can use virtually any length of Ethernet cable to physically connect the AirPort Extreme to your modem.
    After that, the next best bet is to experiment with a different 2.4 GHz Channel setting by manually trying different channels.
    If the interference persists, you may be forced into trying a different manufacturer of headphones, or abandon the BlueTooth communications.
    A few years ago, I had to replace my cordless phones at the house for the same type of reason. Whenever the phone would ring....the wireless signal would crash.

  • Airport express stopped extending the network

    Hi all,
    I have had working an Airport Extreme acting as a wifi base plus an Airport Express to extend the network for more than one year and could receive an excellent wifi coverage all over the appartment.
    Recently, I decided to update my laptop OS version (an old Leopard) first to Snow Leopard and immediately after to Lion. After lots of software updates, at some point I begun receiving warnings to update the Extreme firmware. I did so and that same day I realized that the Express was not working as network extender any more. I further got frustrated to see that the latest Airport Utility didn't even "like" my Express and I had to downgrade to Airport Utility 5.6 in order to be able to configure the Express.
    This was almost one month ago and I have spent many hours and tried all kind of combinations since then. For instance, I checked that the express was ok by creating with it a new network. This worked perfectly. I also reseted the Express to manufaturing defaults several times. I have even created a full new network from the beginning. Nothing works.
    Both devices show green lights, but when I'm close to the Express, the BSSID I get is that of the Extreme, not the Express BSSID. I can see the Express in Airport Utility 6 but it is shown as connected to the Extreme with a dashed line.
    I don't know what else to try. The worse thing is that even by buying a new Express I don't get any guarantee that the problem won't persist, since the network extension has worked perfectly in the past and doesn't work any more.
    Any ideas are welcome.

    I am starting to think that I have a non-functional device.
    That is looking like a possibility.
    Try a Factory Default Reset if you have not done so already.
    Leave the Express powered off for 15-20 minutes
    Hold in the reset button first, and keep holding it for an additional 9-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power back into the Express
    Release the reset button after the hold period and allow a full minute for the Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
    Try to configure the Express in the same room as the main router. Restart the main router before you try to configure the Express. If it works, then move it further away....but do not reset it....to see if it will connect and behave.
    If you still cannot configure the Express after the Factory Default Reset, I think you have a defective Express.
