Extend time capsule with a time capsule

I have two time capsules.  Can I wirelessly extend the range of one with the other?

Yes, you can if the "extending" Time Capsule is located where it can receive a strong wireless signal from the "main" Time Capsule.
Keep in mind that an "extending" device can only extend the quality and speed of signal that it receives, so a good general location for the extending Time Capsule would be a point that is about half way between your main Time Capsule and the general area that needs more wireless coverage.
Your next question might be "how do you do this?"
The answer will depend on what version of operating system that you have on your Mac or PC, or whether you want to use an iPhone or iPad to configure things.
If you have a Mac, and do not know what opeating sysem it is using, click the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen, then click About This Mac. Post back with the OS X version number that you see there.

  • How do i use my time capsule and extend the network with airport express

I have a new iMac and Time Capsule, how do i extend the network with airport express. My time capsule does have a guest net work, and logins and passwords? I am no computer person. So for me it would have to be spelled out.

Use the search as this has been done to death ..

This has been automated in the v6 utility. I am used to doing it manually in v5 utility which is also fairly easy.
Apple doco is also good to read.

    Note.
You cannot extend the guest network unless everything is up to date 7.6.3 firmware. And that is only with the TC as the main router in the network.
All apple routers can be configured as the main wireless or as the extend wireless.. so don't worry if a post uses express or extreme or TC.. they are for wireless, the same thing.

  • Weak signal on AX extending time capsule

I just extended my network with an AX, using a new Time Capsule as the base station. Airport Utility sees the correct setup, Time capsule as the base creating the network and the AX as extending the same network.
When I move to a range close to the AX, the signal is down to one bar - if it's extending the network, shouldn't the bars be full?
    thx for any help

An older b/g AirPort Express and your Time Capsule can be configured in a WDS (Wireless Distribution System) arrangement, but the setup is a more complicated process. The upside is that your wireless coverage will improve. The downside is that WDS cuts the bandwidth of the network in half, so you may notice slower operation on the network.
Both the Time Capsule and AirPort Express must be configured for WDS. For step by step instructions, refer to the Designing AirPort Networks guide, pages 42-44.

  • Can I extend time capsule by adding external drive connected TC via USB?

    Hi,
I use my TC drive for backups, i's now full. Can I extend time capsule backup drive by adding external drive connected TC via USB? If yes, how do I his? I have 1TB WD external drive connected via the TC's USB, I can see the WD drive in the finder and the TC set-up...but I don't know where to go from here...
    Thanks for your help

    Welcome to the discussions, Steveru!
I think what you are asking is can you simply continue Time Machine backups by adding the new USB drive, correct? The answer is not exactly. See below for details.
To use the new USB drive for Time Machine backups, you'll need to Open System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock and open Time Machine. Click on Select Disk and click your USB drive to highlight it, then click Use for Backup. Here's the rub....Time Machine will make a new full complete backup of everything on your Mac's hard drive. There's no way to avoid this. After that, it will continue to make scheduled incremental backups just like it did before on the Time Capsule.
If you ever need to go back to your original backups on the Time Capsule, you'll need to right-click the Time Capsule icon on the dock and choose Browse Other Time Machine Disks.
When the USB drive start to fill, you may decide that you no longer need all the old backups on the Time Capsule disk since you should have a good history of backups on the USB drive at that point.
So, you could erase the Time Capsule disk and then start backing up to the Time Capsule disk again. At that time, it will also make a complete backup on the first pass and then normal incremental backups from that point forward. When the TC begins to fill again, then you could erase the older backups on the USB drive and start backups again on that drive. Then switch to the other drive in the future to keep things going indefinitely. If you go with this type of flip flop plan, you should always have a solid history of many months of backups at any given time.
Will a plan like this work? I don't answer a question on the forum unless I've done it myself. This has been working well for me for almost 3 years.
Pondini, the resident expert on Time Machine and Time Capsule affairs, may have some comments on this as well. If you haven't already seen his excellent guide, Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule or +Time Machine FAQ+, these are the best available sources of information on this subject on the Internet.
Or, if you don't want to erase any your backups, you could of course keep adding a new USB drive when the current drive is about to fill.

  • Extend Time Capsule Wireless Range

I am having trouble with my Time Capsule's wireless range. I am not a networking expert by any means. I own an old building that is 4 stories connected by stairs with thick walls. All the rooms ethernet cables converge in a cubby on the 3rd floor. I placed my Time Capsule in the cubby, but I couldn't receive a wireless signal from the 1st floor. This is ironic because I have an old Netgear G router that sends signals throughout all 4 floors. So I bought an Airport Express to extend my network wirelessly, but the signal has been unstable perhaps because the Time Capsule's wireless signal is too weak. So I want to connect the Airport Express on the 1st floor using the Ethernet link from the 3rd floor Time Capsule which is my main router. From my research, I discovered about WDS networks, which I believe you have to use in order to create a network with multiple Apple base stations linked through ethernet.
I called Applecare who told me:
-To connect from Time Capsule to Airport Express using Ethernet, must use WDS network. Setup Airport Express as Relay, NOT Remote.
-Relay- Direct ethernet connection from Time Capsule to Airport Express, then wireless connection from Airport Express to Macbook.
-Remote- Wireless signal from Time Capsule to Airport Express, then direct Ethernet connection from Airport Express to Macbook
I have several questions for you wise people out there:
    1. To extend the Time Capsule wireless network using the Airport Express, but connected directly via ethernet, do I need to setup a WDS network?
    2. I prefer to just use the simple Apple settings "extend network wirelessly". Will this setting only boost a wireless signal received from the Time Capsule? Can it not extend a wireless signal sent directly from Ethernet?
    3. I'm considering getting a Quickertek Triband antenna to place outside the cubby. Anyone have any experience with Airport external antennas?:
    http://www.quickertek.com/products/timecapsuletriband.php
Any information would be much appreciated! These networking issues have been giving me months of headache.
    Thank you!
    Alexander

    Apple Time Capsule 1TB
    Airport Express N version
Connected with 2.4ghz. band to N capable Macs.

Extending your network with an AirPort Express (AX) won't boost the TimeCapsule's (TC's) range per se. It will expand the network's range by adding another transceiver.
If you'd prefer to avoid using Ethernet to connect the TC and AX, you might get a better signal on the first floor if the AX was on the second floor, i.e, roughly halfway between the TC and the 1st-floor computer. [Extending the range of an 802.11n network|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=AirPortUtility/5.1/en/ap21 24.html] describes how to configure them.
If an Ethernet linkup is no problem, though, that should work even better. In this case, it's best to use different (by 3 or more) channels on the 2 stations to reduce the chance that they'll interfere with each other.
Either way, it's best to use the same network name, network password, and encryption on both stations so you can roam freely through the building without needing to switch manually between them.
[Designing AirPort Networks 10.5-Windows manual|http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/Designing_AirPort_Networks10.5-Windows.pdf] is another good resource you may find helpful.

  • Trying to extend my network with express but it times out

Trying to extend my network with an airport express, but everytime I follow the instructions it prompts me to "switch" networks and then it times out.

What is the make & model of the wireless router that you are trying to extend with the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn)?

  • System freezes after extended time in standby after 10.6.2 update.

After updating to 10.6.2 my laptop freezes if left in standby for an extended time...say 45 minutes. I then have to force the system to crash / shut down in order to restart. I have to do this several times per day. Any one else with this problem...and / or a fix?
    Thanx, Mark

Sorry, topperharly, but I've tried everything suggested with no luck. I did the PRAM ~ NVRAM and SMC resets, I also tried the safe boot....no go. For now I have merely resorted to setting the laptop "energy saver" sleep time to "never." I don 't particularly like doing this to the computer, but it is better than having to force if off several times a day. Even when I shut it down manually, the next time I turn it on there is no video. So, I have to force it off, and the second time the video usually comes up. I'm afraid that one of these times it won't.
I hope Apple is aware of this. There are not many people posting to this thread. I have an extended warranty, and will call Apple tomorrow. If I learn anything, I'll pass it on.
    Good luck, mark

  • Trying to extend time in a template by copying scene & pasting

Trying to extend time in a template by copying scene & pasting in at the end, but with a different video inside the provided video holder.

Hi rick, I have a template that has 6 scenes.
    1. Intro.
    2. Video / Photo placeholder scene.
    3. Video / Photo placeholder scene.
    4. Video / Photo placeholder scene.
    5. Video / Photo placeholder scene.
    6. Outro Scene.
I would like to use scene 2 again after scene 5 but not use the same Video / Photo place holder.
I'm trying to insert a new video in the new place holder that would actually become scene 6, but it keeps dislayin the same video as scene 2.
My new total scenes would be 7 instead of 6.

  • Itunes freezes up when my iphone or ipad is connected and charging for an extended time like charging over night.

Itunes freezes up when ipad or iphone is connected via USB for an extended time like charging over night or even several hours. I am running all current software with all updates on a Macbook Pro. When I hit Eject I get the spinning beachball and have to hit command-option-escape to get out of it or the beachball will stay present forever. Any suggestions?

Looks like new firmware upgrade solved this issue.

  • Extend time in Timeline of imported 3D object for animation in CS4?

    Hello guys,
I have very strange problem with CS4 and imported either 3DS or OBJ files:
When I open 3DS or OBJ file, lets say - a car object, I draw some dirty textures over it and then open Animation window and want to animate
it by simple rotation. When I open animation window with timeline, I then go to pull-down menu to the right and open Document Settings.
Then I set time from default 3:10 seconds animation lenght to 10:00 seconds, for example, and set playback speed from 30 to 25fps.
But then - I can NOT extend manually timeline of selected object I want to animate. It is FIXED to 3:10 seconds.
Is it a bug and how to avoid it?
My solution was - to open this object into 3D Studio Max and then in its time line set from 100 frames to lets say - 500 frames animation lenght and then save back again, but this is very slow operation and requires full working 3D Studio that my firm do not have...
Any ideas about how to extend time in animation timeline of imported 3D objects for animating in CS4?
    Thank you very much.
    n.

You did not look down far enough. Below them are some layers in blue (or other solid color) Twirl down the one that says 3D Meshes. Click on the small stopwatch for the object move your playhead ahead in time then rotate your mesh. The easiest way to rotate the mesh is using the text fields in the mesh's properties.

  • How do I extend a network with an AirPort Extreme from an Arris TG862?

I'm using Comcast as my ISP, and after some issues with a previous Motorola modem, they supplied me with an Arris TG862 Router/Modem combo tower. I have two AirPort Extremes, one of which was previously connected to the old Motorola modem to send wireless into the house, but it only reached halfway, so I had the other AirPort Extreme in the middle of the house to "catch" the signal and then broadcast it out to the rest of the house. This worked fine for a while.
But with the new TG862, it doesn't seem to be an option. From what I've read, if I have the TG862 in one room (connected to the cable), AirPort Extreme #1 in the middle of the house, trying to join the existing network (or extend it?), and AirPort Extreme #2 in the far end of the house (to extend from AirPort #1), it won't work. Apple's "extension" technology isn't compatible with all other modems or routers, and even if it was, I'd have to somehow configure the TG862 to "allow to be extended."
So my question is, IF there is a desktop utilizing the TG862 as a direct connection (because it has no built-in Wi-Fi), is it possible to put the TG862 into bridge mode, connect one of the AirPort Extremes and have it act as the router so I can use AirPort Extreme #2 to extend that network out to the rest of the house? I want to ensure the desktop still has a connection, but there's Wi-Fi that actually goes out through the whole house.
The connected-to-the-cable-desktop is a PC; we have multiple iPhones, iPads, and anywhere from 1 Mac laptop to 1 iMac in the house at any given time.

I have a TimeCapsule Base Station with two Expresses for extending the network through the house.
We're doing a 3 room addition, and there is not a convenient place to put an Express in a wall outlet in the middle room of the addition, but there's a perfect place to put an Extreme on top of a piece of furniture.
So, can the Extreme act as an "extender" only, in lieu of using an Express?
    Hiya.
You can absolutely extend a network with an Extreme. I've got a 5th gen. Extreme extending a network created with a 3rd gen. Time Capsule. On the Extreme, you'll have the option to allow (or not) WiFi clients. I recommend having all units updated to the current firmware (7.6.1 as of this writing). Note that extending doesn't work in daisy-chain fashion, meaning that your Expresses or Extremes will each connect to and extend from the TC. As such, you'll want the TC to be in as central a location as possible to offer the best coverage.

  • Can I extend a network with AE, then plug into it?

i have checked but can't seem to answer this exact question:
i have a time capsule and my G5 tower is plugged in using ethernet (no wifi card). I also have a MBP. i am moving my G5 one floor down where there is no ethernet plug, but the wife reaches.
can i extend the network with an AE and then PLUG the G5 into the AE? or will i need a wifi card?
    thanks in advance

You would use AirPort Utility to first check the settings on the Time Capsule
    AirPort Utility - Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Make sure there is a check mark next to "Allow this network to be extended". Otherwise, things won't work.
Note the exact Security setting you are using for use with the AirPort Express
Use AirPort Utility the same way for the Express
Click the Base Station tab to name the device, assign password, adjust Time, etc
    Click the Wireless tab:
Wireless Mode = Extend a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Same name as the Time Capsule network
Check mark next to Allow Wireless Clients
Wireless Security = Same setting as the Time Capsule
Wireless Password = Same password as the Time Capsule
    Confirm Password
Update to save changes. You should have green light in 30-40 seconds and the ethernet port will be active.

  • Can i use airport extreme as wifi range extender in conjunction with a Linksys AE4500 router

can i use airport extreme base station as wifi range extender in conjunction with a Linksys AE4500 router

If you are trying to "extend" using wireless only......Apple tells us that their "extend a wireless network" feature is designed to only work with other Apple routers.
So, in order to use your AirPort Extreme as an extender, you would need to have another Apple router.....an AirPort Express, Time Capsule, or another AirPort Extreme as the main base station.
I haven't tested the specific Linksys model that you have, but have owned and worked with several other Linksys models, none of which were compatible with Apple for the purpose that you ask about....so I would have to say that it is extremely unlikely that your model would be compatible with the AirPort Extreme.
