Extended desktop issue under XP SP3

I'm running Windows XP SP3 on my MacBook. The Intel GMA 965 driver will allow me to do the following combinations:
Just the laptop display
Just the external display
Mirrored displays
Extended desktop with the notebook as the primary display
Surely there must be some way to do an extended display with the external as the primary display?

Same problem here... We have about 6 new Macbooks that absolutely need this functionality or they're going back.

MacBook as far as i know only supports mini-DVI to "_" adapters. I'm using the midi-DVI to DVI adapter. i find myself clicking detect display multiple times before the mac initialize the external monitor. ...and when it does it sometimes doesn't recognize the name of the monitor and labels it display, or it starts up at a 90 degree angle. could it be a driver issue thats causes this?
In addition, I use some audio editing software in windows. It shows that the computer supports extended desktop, but no action is on the monitor. Could it just be a hardware problem?

Go to System Preferences -> Displays -> Arrangement
    and check/adjust the positions.

  • Extended Desktop Issues

    Hi Guys,
Tearing my hair out at this.
Since I got my Macbook Pro (2 years ago now) I've always used it with an external monitor to have an extended desktop and had no problems. I've used a VGA cable with an Mini Display Port adaptor.
However, 2 weeks ago I took my Macbook to a company to do a presentation and they connected it up to a huge monitor, it worked fine for the first 20 mins and then seemed to stop working (the extended desktop).
Now at home and at the office when i connect the laptop to any external monitors (the same monitors I have been using for the last 2 years) they sometimes come on and then when I move something (e.g. Safari) to the monitor it flickers and then goes off!
I've replaced VGA cables, change monitors, changed Display Port Adaptor but still no luck. I've done some research and followed instructions to reset the NVRAM but still no good.
I'm not sure what to do now and how to fix the issue. My Macbook Pro (Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5) Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core i5 Late 2011.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    D

followed instructions to reset the NVRAM but still no good.
Did you reset NVRAM with the external monitor connected and powered on? I would try it both ways, viz. with the external active, and without the external connected.

  • Extended desktop issue

I've tried to run extended desktop from macbook air while connecting it with an external monitor. But I can't control or move the cursor to the external monitor when there is a window popping on the external monitor. Thanks.

  • Airplay display issues: "extend desktop" not working properly. Secondary display continues to mirror.

Whenever I turn my airplay display on and set it to "extend desktop," my secondary display (TV) continues mirroring my mac book pro (hereinafter MBP). It doesn't fully mirror my MBP, but my secondary display registers every time I switch between my desktop 1 and my full screen apps. Moreover, When I do switch to a fullscreen app on my MBP, I get a blank (blue-ish) screen on my TV.
    Any solutions!?!
Additionally, "extended desktop" for my Airplay display worked properly when Mavericks was first released.

    Try this:
Click on the Apple TV Icon on the top toolbar
Then, select "Mirror Built in Display" instead of extend desktop
In the same menu under "Match Desktop size to:" select "Apple TV" (or keep it on "built in display if that works"
This solved a similar problem for me.

  • Extended Desktop (video out) issues

Hi, I'm having trouble figuring out how to set up an extended desktop onto another monitor using my iMac G5, 1.8 GHz. Mirroring the desktop is fine, and the help screen says that if there's no "Arrangement" option, then it won't be able to set up the extended desktop. I don't see this, but I seem to remember having this computer use a second display as an extended desktop before. Is there a solution for this or am I destined for mirrored desktops only?

yep, sounds like your computer doesn't support spanning, only mirroring...
As someone else said there is a firmware extension script called 'screen spanning doctor' (google it). I wouldn't call it a hack as you can remove it by resetting your pram, i think... however, it can mess your computer up, so really think before you want to use it!!

  • Issue when playing movie on full screen with extended desktop.

I'm running Itunes on Windows and I'm using a dual monitor configuration. When I play a movie and go to full screen, Itunes will go full screen on the current screen but also will set black the second monitor. So, when I go full screen I lost the second monitor. Why!!?
Is there any way to go full screen without touching my second monitor? I usually see movies while I do other stuff in the second monitor.

lame.. but how come its not the same in all cases. if I view
the flash video on nbc.com that will full screen in the extended
    desktop, as will youtube
    whats the difference in implementation?

  • Extended Desktop Mode on iBook G4

I am trying to configure my iBook G4 to use extended desktop mode with a Dell M780 monitor. I currently have the Dell monitor mirroring the iBook display, but would like to have it in extended desktop mode.
OS X Help Viewer tells me to go to System Prefs > Displays > Arrangement, but when I go to the Displays section there are only two tabs: "Display" and "Color", and there are no other buttons, menus or anything related to arrangement.
My graphics card, which perhaps has something to do with this, is an ATI Mobility Radeon 9200. There are 32 MB total of VRAM. Core Image is not supported on either the iBook display or the Dell display.

    Hi Mathew,
    Welcome to the forum.
The iBooks do not support extended desktop. Should you wish to have this feature, you can with a third party solution. More details here:
    http://www.rutemoeller.com/mp/ibook/ibook_e.html
Be aware, if your iBook is under warranty or you have AppleCare, this could be void if there is any damage caused as a direct result of applying the above. That said, a lot of people have done this without any issues. Infact I have yet to come across anyone who has had issues.

  • Tablet PC calibration error in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator CS3 whilst in Extended Desktop Mode

    Hey everyone!
I've run into a snag which hasn't bugged me before because I never used a second monitor, but now that I do, Photoshop and Illustrator don't function properly.
I am running my Adobe products on my Lenovo X61 Thinkpad Tablet, which is Wacom PenEnabled. It's got the basic digitizer pen and pen pressure features, no stylus tilt or anything.
Whenever I run Photoshop or Illustrator in Extended Desktop Mode so I can have a different window open on my external monitor and the Adobe app on my tablet screen, my stylus goes strange. It seems to think that the extended desktop is part of the Adobe window, so when I move my stylus to draw, the cursor will appear on the external monitor, usually proportionate to the size of the screen...ie. It interprets the external and tablet screens as one desktop and the top left corner of my tablet screen is the top left of my external, whilst the bottom right on tablet IS the bottom right on tablet, if that makes any sense...sorry.
So I can't draw anything in photosho unless I set it back to standard desktop mode, or mirrored desktop. I've searched over the net and these forums and I can't find a fix for this. I was walking in harvey norman the other day and the Wacom Cintiq 12" was there on display, and it had the same issue with extended desktop and photoshop.
Has anyone had this issue before and/or does anyone know of a fix for it? I'll keep searching around and playing with the computer until I fix it and I'll post any solutions I find here if noone else has one.
    My system details are:
    Abobe Photoshop CS3 10.0.0
    Adobe Illustrator CS3 13.0.0
OS: Windows Vista Build 6001, Service Pack 1, 32bit
    RAM: 2GB
HD: 18.2GB free Disk Space (out of 66.3GB on the Active Partition)
Video: Intel GMA: Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family

I'm using an HP tx2011au tablet pc, using adobe flash cs3 and have the exact same problem. it becomes decalibrated only while the flash window is open, and only while flash has a file open, and only when using an extended desktop. even if flash is open and it has no files open it works fine.

  • Dual Display, 2 Monitors - Extended Desktop

    Hello Everyone:
There isn't a clear cut answer or solution in connected a Macbook Air to 2 external monitors in an attempt to create an extended desktop. I have read older posts that it's either doable or not doable. My questions are the following:
-Is it possible to connect a new Macbook Air to 2 external monitors for extended desktop purposes?
-Some users have reported lag issues (mouse dragging , delays, etc.). Will this happen for sure with a Macbook Air or is it a monitor issue?
-What's the best non-Apple monitor brand that would work best with a Macbook Air for dual display purposes? I've read that Dells have a problem in this regard.
-What would be the advantage or disadvantage of using a dock station in setting up a dual display environment? Would this add to the lag, latency factor?
I'm thinking of investing in a new Macbook Air, but I want to make sure I dont end up with silly issues - such as latency, monitors, etc.
Thank you for all your help and advise.
    Best,
    G.

Yes, extended desktop works with monitors set to differant resoultions. the Monitors pref pane allows you to select relative arrangements and rez of all monitors composing the extended desktop.
    personally I run a dell CRT at 2304 X 1728 @ 60Hz along with an NEC 6FG a 2048 X 1280 @ 60Hz off a radeon 9800pro on an MDD.

  • Using extended desktop mode with ThinkPad x220

I have an Acer AL2216W external monitor. It has a resolution of 1680 x 1050
    http://support.acer.com/acerpanam/monitor/0000/Acer/AL2216W/AL2216Wsp2.shtml
When I use extended desktop mode with the external monitor set as the primary display, everything scales properly on both the external and internal monitor.
However, if I set the internal monitor as the primary display, the external display does not fill the screen (there is a big black border around the desktop).
In both cases, the resolution setting for the external monitor is 1680 x 1050.
    Is this normal behaviour?

    Hello,
That's how Windows behaves.  Supposedly Realtime Soft Ltd.'s UltraMon gives you more precise control over wallpaper under Windows, but I have not used it myself.

  • Display goes to Extended Desktop when awoke in Closed Clamshell on TV

I use my 13" MBP in closed Clam Shell mode nearly all the time. I have it connected to my Sony 40" HDTV using the Griffin adapter and it works great most of the time.
BUT sometimes when it comes off sleep mode. All my desktop icons are on the extended desktop (TV) and the dock is on the main screen (Closed Laptop Screen)
So I have to Open up laptop. Make Laptop go to sleep. Close Laptop to closed clam shell again then everything is good on TV again.
Not sure why this is happening. Probably 1 in 10 sleeps it does this.
    Any Ideas anyone.......
    Thanks in advance

Yup. I have no issues using an external display in clamshell mode. It's only when I try to airplay to my apple tv while in this clamshell mode that I run into problems. So to clarify, there are 3 devices in my situation: my macbook, my external monitor, and my apple tv (which is connected to my hdtv of course, so 4 devices). Usually I just use my external monitor with my macbook closed. That works fine. But when I occasionally want to airplay to my apple tv as additional mirrored/extended monitor, I have to open up the macbook first to exit clamshell mode. Otherwise if I just go straight into airplay while still in clamshell mode, my hdtv shows a frozen image, my external monitor goes black and I have no choice but to manually turn off my macbook. Hope that makes sense. I think it would be easier if I could draw a diagram haha.

  • PowerPc G4 Extended Desktop

    Hi there,
I was wondering if someone could help me? I have a 533 MHz PowerPc G4 and have just attached 2 monitors... hoping for an extended desktop. 1 of the monitors connects to the VGA port direct and I also purchased a ADC to VGA Adapter to connect the 2nd monitor. At the moment it only shows mirrored screens and the display option in preferences will not let me click arrange.
I have a Ge Force2 MX graphics card, and looking through the apple forums, it says that I should be able to have extended desktop? I am running OSX 10.3.9.
Is this a graphics card problem? If so, do I need a whole new graphics card or is it possible to install a second graphics card. At the moment there is 3 slots free (1 is being used for a sound card) and the graphics card is in the AGP slot.
    Hope someone can help.
    533 Mhz PowerPC g4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

An ATI Radeon 9000 Pro Mac Edition would be one relatively cheap and easy option. It's an AGP card and would replace your existing one, has an ADC and DVI connector and comes with a DVI to VGA adapter, so with your existing ADC to VGA adapter you'd be able to connect two VGA monitors. It came in 64MB and 128MB versions and was discontinued some time ago, although they seem to appear on eBay regularly.

The ATI Radeon 9200 Mac Edition is the only Mac compatible PCI graphics card I'm aware of that's still readily available new. It should work in conjunction with your existing card to drive a second display, has a DVI and VGA connector and comes with a DVI to VGA adapter. It doesn't seem compatible with OS 9 when installed in some G4s (including yours), but is supported under OS X.

Failing that I guess you could look for a twin-view version of the GeForce 2 MX or GeForce 4 MX on eBay that someone's pulled from their Mac whilst upgrading. As far as I'm aware they were never available retail. Which ever card you choose though, it needs to be a Mac version as a PC graphics card won't work.

  • Setting Up Extended Desktop

I am trying to set up an extended desktop for my iMac.  The operating system on it is 10.6.8 and I am trying to set it up so that the extended desktop utilizes my Macbook Pro system 10.7.5.  I have the thunderbolt cable and have connected it to both computers and tried the following:
System Preferences -> Displays -> Arrangement
However, when I go into system preferences there is no option under displays for arrangement.  What am I doing wrong or what should I be doing to make this work?  Is it even possible?  Thank you.

There is no MacBookPro model that I know of that you could use as an extended desktop for your iMac.  I don't think any MBP's ever supported use of the MBP as a display for another computer.
Only certain iMac models support(ed) their use as a monitor for another computer connected to it via miniDP.  If you have such an iMac, you may be able to use it as an extended desktop for your MacBookPro, but not the other way around.

  • IMac 27" extended desktop problems

    Hi!
I own a 2011 iMac 27" and I am having issues using a Samsung SyncMaster T240M display as extended desktop.
It works fine when I am just using the computer for a while, but if the displays go to sleep mode, when I return to the computer the iMac display restores right away but then the Samsung display starts to go on and off repeatedly until it finally stays on, but then all my applications are on the iMac display.
It is pretty much like what would happen if I had unplugged the monitor and plugged it back in.
Is there a way to fix this or do I just have to live with that? Has anyone experienced the same problem with other displays? Maybe this Samsung display is not syncing well with the iMac?
Anyway, any help will be very much appreciated.
    See you,
    JP

If the machine is covered by warranty or even better by AppleCare then contact AppleCare. They will be able to do in-home service if you are within 50 miles of an AASP. You will have to request this service but they will do it.
