Extended features error

I have created a form in Adobe acrobat 10 and produced a fillable form. This is used by students who use it using Reader (various versions) over the period of their course and revisit it and save it on multiple occations.
For some students it is fine and never has a problem. For some students it breaks and gets the error, 'This document has been changed since it was created and use of extended features is no longer available.
They are using the new versions of reader and this is still occurring. They are also using this for some time and then it breaks.
Does anyone know what causes the error to occur?
I don't think that it is a time and dates errors with the users computer and I am also aware that 3rd party reader products also break it.
Could it be a problem with emailing it between different computers or if it is saved as copies, rather than as saving over the existing?
Please help!

What is the error message that you are receiving? Could you please post a screenshot of the same.
Also, could you please check your system date, and verify that there is no issue there.

  • Extended features error in Adobe Reader X

    Friends,
I am trying to fill out some application forms available at the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website. I have saved these forms on computer hard drive. Although the forms say that they can be filled and saved on computer in order to make future changes, I am not able to do so. Everything seems fine when I fill out the form the first time but when I save the form and open it up at a later time, I receive the following message in Adobe Reader:
"This document enabled extended features in Adobe Reader. The document has been changed since it was created and use of extended features is no longer available. Please contact the author for the original version of this document."
After this message is received, I can open and see these forms but cannot edit it any more. Due to this, I have to start over from zero in order to make even a small change. Please help me solve this problem. I am using Acrobat X and Windows 7 operating system.
    Your help is greatly appreciated.
    Sincerely,
    Joe Sekhon

Thanks very much for looking into this Pat. Here is the link for one of those forms:

Hopefully, when you download it and save it on your computer, fill it and close it and then reopen it for editing, you will get the same error as me. Once again, thanks very much.

  • Extended Features Error... please help

I have a document with forms that lives on my desktop.  I keep this as my master, then use the "save as" with completed documents.  Out of the blue, I am getting the "use of extended features is no longer available error" when opening the master and the form fields have disappeared.  Thinking I somehow corrupted this document, I opened one of the "saved as" documents, and got the same error.  I had a co-worker send me her version of the master, and again I got the same error, even though the forms work fine on her computer.  I even restored my computer to previous time before this error started occuring, and even that didn't fix the problem.   I should add... I don't have Acrobat of any of the Pros, and I'm using Reader X.    Please help!

Well... I found a fix to my own problem.  I installed Adobe XI and the error message disappeared and my forms returned!

  • Remove Extended Features with JavaScript?

    A LITTLE HISTORY:
At first I was manually trying to crop a PDF using the Document > Crop Pages option in Acrobat Pro.
However, it told me that I could not crop the document because the document "restricts some features to allow for extended features in Acrobat Reader" and that I should Save a Copy in order to remove the restrcitions and be able to crop the document.
That was fine and that did indeed work by saving a copy. And, I was then able to crop the document.
However, now I have been given hundreds of these documents to crop and they all have this "extended features" thing enabled on them.
I was going to write a JavaScript batch command to crop the files (which I have done for previous projects) but it wouldn't work (I assume because of the extended features).
Then I tried writing a javaScript to saveAs all the documents with the asCopy option set to true.
That did not seem to work either because when I then tried to crop one of the saveAs files, I got the same "extended features" error.
    QUESTION:
Does anyone know how I can programmatically get around this problem? Can I disable "extended features" via JavaScript? Can I do some sort of save or exprto or something that will strip it out? Am I simply doing something wrong? Or, is it just not possible?
    Any assistance is greatly appreciated!
    Mark

I haven't even gotten to the code part yet.
Here is a word-for-word transcription of the error message:
This document restricts some Acrobat features to allow for extended features in Acrobat Reader. To create a copy of the document that is not restricted (and has no extended features in Adobe Reader), click Save a Copy.
This is an Adobe Acrobat dialog where I have a Save a Copy button and a Cancel button.
This warning message appears when I manually try to crop the document by using the Document -> Crop Pages option from Adobe Acrobat.
    As I was originally asking:
Does anyone know how I can programmatically get around this problem via JavaScript? Can  I disable "extended features" via JavaScript? Can I do some sort of  save or export or something that will strip it out?
I have 320 documents I need to crop. I really don't want to have to manually Save a Copy for each document.
    Thank you very much!

Yes.  I don't have the version you pay for.  I also tried the free version
of EchoSign.  Maybe that caused the problem.
Any more suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Extended features getting disabled

We have two computers in our organization that do not want to send forms to each other!
We created a form - one user (user A) tried to send a filled out form to another particular user so that he can sign off on it (using a signature field), but this particular user (user B)cannot modified the form at all!
    User B gets this message:
"This document enabled extended features in Adobe Reader. The document has been changed since it was created and use of extended feautres is no longer available. Please contact the author for the original version of this document."
However, user A can send the same form to anyone else, and they can open it and use the form just fine - no message.
It gets even better - User B can open other PDFs/forms from other people and use them just fine as well.
Not to mention - if user A sends the form to someone else (user C) first, then user C forwards the form to user B WITHOUT MAKING ANY CHANGES - it works fine; we don't get that message.
If you can follow all of that and have any idea what may be causing this issue, I would greatly appreciate hearing about it! Both users have Adobe Reader 9, and the form was created in Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional. All on Windows XP. The person sending the email is using Outlook, the person receiving the form is using a web based email (but saving the document to the computer first does not help).
    Thanks for the help!

I'd like to piggy-back on this thread. I am also having this issue and closing and reopening the document until the error message goes away is not a solution.
I'm using Acrobat Pro 9.2.0 for MAC and enabling extensions for Reader. The Reader version our company uses is Reader 9.1.3 for PC.
As in the original post, it's a single user that continues to have these issues. All the other people that touch these files have little/no problems with this. Tech Support has tried reinstalling Reader and it seemed to work for a few days and now the issue is back. Anyone have a clue on this?
Here's a screenshot of the error, which is also stated in the original post.

  • Acrobat Pro 8 and Reader X - Enable Extended Features for Form

Using Acrobat Pro 8.3.0, I "Enabled Usage Rights for Adobe Reader" for a fillable form created in LiveCycle Designer 8.0.  The following error message occurs when opening this form in Reader X:
"This document enabled extended features in Adobe Reader.  The document has been changed since it was created and use of extended features is no longer available.  Please contact the author for the original version of this document."
The form has not been changed and as mentioned, I am the author.  Any solutions to allow user in Reader X to fill-in form?  Do I need to upgrade to Acrobat Pro X?

I am having same problem with a 2011 year tax PDF fill in form I JUST got from IRS website.  The actual form is the 2011 8829.
I can not open the PDF from the web browser or if I save it to my local drive.
I have not been able to open it at all ... thus I have made NO changes.
    I am running Windows 7 64 bit, Adobe Reader X version 10.1.4.
After trying to open the doc (nothing displays) I go to properties, and it says ...
    Title: 2011 Form 8829
    Author: SE:W:CAR:MP
    Created: 12/23/2008
PDF Producer: Adobe LiveCycle DSesigner ES 8.2.
    PDF Version: 1.7 (Acrobat 8.x)
    Tagged PDF: No
    Fast Web View: No
What do I do to resolve this ... I only have this version of Reader ... nothing else.

  • How can I edit a form that has "Extend Features in Adobe Reader"?

I created a form in Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 and added Extend Features in Adobe Reader. I need to edit the form, but "Save a Copy" isn't removing the "Extend Features...". I get an error message that I can't edit the form & to "save a copy" in order to edit. What can I do?

When I saw the responses, I pulled out an old version and started over. I already deleted the one that wouldn't revert from extended functions and the copy I created to edit it based on removing extended functions with "save a copy". Thanks anyway. I'd love to know why it wouldn't remove extended functions.

  • The Document Enabled Extended Features in Adobe Reader.

Our requirement is like we received a PDF template from client. we added an image field by using Adobe LiveCycle designer to achieve user signature on the field & save the PDF form, once signature field is added; PDF form is opened in Adobe Acrobat X pro to enable readers extensions (open PDF form in Adobe Acrobat X pro -> File -> Save As - > Readers Extended PDF -> Enable Additional features.).
Once this reader Enabled PDF form is uploaded in sharepoint Document library where from user can download this form on their local, open this PDF form is opened in Adobe Reader on their local system the Above mentioned message appears.
Here we are using trial version of Adobe Acrobat X Pro, Can you please confirm if this error is because of this trial version? or some alternate approch.

  • Enabled Extended Features?

I am getting an error message which contains the verbage "...use of extended features is no longer available..." This is disallowing me from modifying an existing saved document. Do I have to recreate all documents which have this error message?
    Thanks, Doug.

"Extend' or "Enable" of a  PDF is accomplished by use of Acrobat Pro or an enterprise level server application Adobe markets.
Cannot do it with Adobe Reader.
    Be well...

  • Extended Features in forms become unavailable when sent to other users.

I'm trying to create an application form that I can email to clients and get them to fill in, save and send back. I'm creating in Adobe Acrobat Pro X, saving as Reader Extended PDF, to enable more tools. Save and re-open the file myself and it works perfectly. However send to another user opening it on the free (fully up to date) Adobe Reader and this message appears:
"This document enabled extended features in Adobe Reader. The document has been changed since it was created and use of extended features is no longer available.      Please contact the author for the original version of this document."
I have racked my brains and tried so many different things but nothing seems to work.
    Any help would be amazing!

This type of thing is often difficult to diagnose. If there's something wrong with the file, Reader will attempt to correct it if possible, which causes the contents to change, which causes the validation of the digital signature associated with the usage rights to fail. The source of the error is often related to fonts. There also seems to be forward compatibility problems, so it is best if you can enable the document with the most recent version of Acrobat, which is currently 11. Without seeing the file it's difficult to say what's wrong.

  • Extended Features

Please help me resolve the following, it does not allow me to fill in, fillable forms, the exact same form works on other computers when I send it to them, so the error message is not valid and has got nothing to do with the Author it states the following - This document enabled extended features in Adobe Reader. The document has been changed since it was created and use of extended features is no longer available. please contact the author for the original version of this document.

What is your operating system?  Reader version?
How was that document received and saved?

  • Extended use error for PDF form

    Hi,
I have created a form with a pdf background that is stored on a shared server.  Most users access the form with Adobe Reader X.  When originally created, the feature to enable usage rights in Adobe Reader were enabled.  I updated the form to correct the text length allowed in a particular field.  Now when you access the form via Reader X, the following error message appears and the form no longer works.  This does not occur if the form is opened in Acrobat Professional or Standard, but most users have Reader X.  Can anyone please help?

You lose the extended features on a PDF any time you modify a PDF with Livecycle.
After modifying your PDF with Livecycle you open it again with Adobe Pro X and save this PDF as a Reader Extended PDF.

  • How to Update Extended Feature Forms and Keep Extended Features?

In the company I work for we have a bunch of PDF certificates that our Customer Service department uses, namely for international sales.  Only the Customer Service manager has Adobe Acrobat so she uses Extended Features so the other people in Customer Service are able to update the forms.  The forms were updated for the new year and then saved in a new folder for 2014.  Now people that are using Adobe Reader get an error about the document being changed and so the extended features are no longer available.  I have read that it can be fixed using Acrobat and saving a copy of the form so that the extended features are disabled and then saving it again to enable extended features, but they have over 60 of these documents so that would take a long time to complete.  Is there an easier way to re-enable the extended features?

Not without spending (tens of) thousands of dollars on an application that can apply these rights in batch.
60 files is not that much, though. Sit someone down and they should be able to do it in an hour.
Also, if you upgrade to Reader XI then you won't need those rights anymore, as that version can save filled-in form fields even without them.

  • Reader can't open file saved with "Extended Features"

    Any help would be appreciated.
File created with Acrobat Pro 9.
File opens fine under Windows and Linux, but can't be saved.
Enable "Extended Features in Adobe Reader" in Acrobat Pro 9.
File can be saved under Windows, but gives an error in Linux.
"This document enabled extended features in Adobe Reader.  The document has been changed since it was created and use of extended features is no longer available.  Please contact the author for the original version of the document."
The file opens, but is unusable.  Nothing can be entered into any of the fields.
    Thanks,

I had the same problem earlier this week -- I created a PDF with Acrobat 9, enabled for commenting, sent out to coworkers, who then reported the "use of extended features is no longer available" message. After many, many troubleshooting permutations, I finally found the problem to be related to the timestamp on the file.
I am on the US east coast, and the document was sent to coworkers on the US west coast, 3 hours earlier. When they opened the document, it appeared to be "from the future" (lol) and therefore suspect. This was born out by the fact that the next day, the file behaved as expected for them. I also verified this on a test system, where I was able to switch the time setting. By the way, this happened with both Reader 8 and 9.
So, I guess the workaround is either to change your computer's time before sending a file with rights extensions to someone in an earlier time zone, or create it and hold it until they have caught up with the time in the file's timestamp.
That has to be about the weirdest bug I have encountered to date...and I have no idea why it showed up this week. I have been sending out PDFs enabled for commenting for a couple years.
