Extended hardware test question

i am running a hardware test on my macbookpro and the test says that "Estimated time to complete: 1 hour or longer , depending on the amount of memory installed." it says "Test" in the bar with no more progress bar shown and under "Test Results" it says "no trouble found" and "Pass Number: 3, Total Time Testing 2 hours 22 mins 16 secs".
the fan started blowing loud and hard when i started the test (unlike the mac pro test) and i am just wondering if this sounds right.
the fan blew loud and hard through the whole test. loud and hard enough to be concerned about it.
is this all normal? normal for a certain MBP model, all MBP's?

If there is an update to your particular graphics firmware, Software Update will let you know; if there is nothing showing there, it means there is no update available for your configuration. Do not simply download from the Apple website and install something that could cause havoc on your machine.
I'm not sure what the problem might be, but it could be graphics card and/or logic board related. Since you've already done the SMC and PRAM resets, unless someone else has another idea, I'd suggest booking an appointment at your nearest Genius Bar for a free evaluation and diagnosis. If the problem is intermittent, take screen shots or video of it so you can show it to them.

    Hi!
    My mid-2009 13-inch Macbook Pro's performance deteriorated last month. It become super super slow.
    So, out of curiosity, I performed an Apple Extended Hardware Test. And here is the error code: 4HDD/11/40000004: SATA (0,0)
    I didn't expect that problem to arise so I don't have any back-up of my essential files. I tried to copy my files to an external drive but copying a 600MB folder required me to wait for more than 30 min before receiving the error code which said somthing like "files cannot be copied"
    Then, I bought a new 60GB Kingston SSDnow V+ and 4GB Trascend 1066Mhz RAM. I successfully installed Snow Leopard on my new SSD and installed the new 4GB memory. Things went well. I even booted my mac so fast using my new SSD via USB enclosure.
    But the problem came when I installed my new drive internally. Flashing question mark appears when starting my Mac. Internal drive is also not recognized by Disk utility when booting my Mac from OS X Installation Disk. Installed my old drive and no success.
    I don't know if the problem is the compatibility of my SSD or the SATA cable. For now, I'm booting my Mac on my new SSD via a USB External Enclosure. My old drive is installed internally but it is not recognized. And I find it too inconvenient to use my Mac booting externally (even though the performance is ultra fast) since I'm a college student.
    My problems:
    a. What to do so that my SSD will be recognized when connected on my Mac internally via SATA?
    b. What to do so that I can have a back-up of my very essential files saved on my old drive? (I remember booting from my old drive connected via USB Enclosure took me more than 1 hour, then logging in to enter my password took me to watch that spinning rainbow wheel forever)
    P.S. Sorry if you find grammatically incorrect sentences.
    I also leave here in the Philippines. And there is no Apple Store here. Apple Authorized Service Centers don't sell the SATA cable. Purchasing the cable via internet is not feasible due to the following reasons: a. My location. b. I'm still a student and I don't have a credit card to pay an online purchase.

    You need to use DW from either an external boot disk or the DW CD since repairs cannot be made on a volume that you are booted up from.

  • Extended Hardware Test Results

    Hi All
    I have been having a lot of trouble lately (G5 1.8GhZ, 1GB RAM (2 x 512) 10.3.9) with kernel panics and freezes. I have fully reinstalled OS X but the problem remained. Eventually I ran the Extended Hardware Test (which took 45 mins) and I got the below error:
    2MEM/5/4:DIMM1/J4001
    I took this to mean that one of my RAM modules is the problem, but, this is only a guess.
    Can anybody shed light on what this error is and maybe how to resolve it?

    Just to load the fodder, that is exactly what was happening on my 4 month old PowerBook Pro; (including all the same software/system troubleshooting) and I got a 4MEM/1/40000000 error code. (it was also causing my Win setup on Boot Camp to wig out -- even worse)
    What I was looking for here (somewhere) is a quick online reference to the code breakdown to tell me which module/slot is bad (one is from Apple the other from 3rd party -- both should be covered)

I cannot fully restart it, cannot make repairs with disk utility, and cannot reinstall OS X to the harddrive volume because it doesn't list any available volumes. This information doesn't show up anywhere in the disc utility diagnostics/profile - leading me to the thing the harddrive is busted - but the hardware test found no problems. Is it possible for the hard drive to be busted but the hardware test to not recognize this? Any suggestions?   • Hardware test question re:FCP4.5 on 10.4.3

    Upgraded to 10.4.3 - QT 7.0.3 running FCP4.5
    In DV25 sequence, loaded a few clips on single layer [video 1] the time line (plenty of handle, all clips) applied a transition between ALL clips, dissolve. On a NTSC monitor. Safe RT - Playback HIGH - Output Full Quality.
    This is my problem: after hitting play, the time line cursor starts slowing down as it approachs any transition, when it arrives at the transition it skips through the transistion. This happens about 80% of the time...on a NTSC monitor it appears the same as the computer monitor. In other words NO realtime transitions, even in a DV25 NTSC project with a single layer. Yet, it shows the transition needs NO rendering.
    This is the same computer that had 10.3.9 running FCP4.5 using QT 6.5.2, no problem....
    I ran the Hardware test from the OSX.3.x disc and this is what I found:
    Quick test: fine (including RAM)
    Extended test: not so fine, this alert MASS STORAGE
    2STF/8/3:A (UPPER)
    Does the above alert mean I've got a bad OS Drive?

    This bit says the Quicktime setting in System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming tab is not set.
    However it is seeing your Netgear so someting is working.
    The Broken Pipe message normally means that the app is not seing the support folder properly. Now this could be the App or the Support folders that are at fualt.
    You need this FAQ and the Hard way instructions for the support folders and the Upgrade info at the bottom of the FAQ.

  • Apple Hardware Test Question on iMac

    I did an advanced Apple Hardware test on my 09 iMac today to test it and to see what was making the buzzing sound. The advanced test revved up each fan when it tested the logic board and I can say it is the lower left fan making the buzzing, however once it reaches 2000+ RPM the buzzing goes away.
    The question i want to ask is after the test the optical drive fan stayed revved up at over 2000 RPM for a few minutes after the computer restarted, unlike the other two fans that went back to normal this fan took atleast 3 mins to go back down to normal rpms. Is this normal?

    Also does the HDD run when in a hardware test? as now and then during the test I heard a weird static sound coming from the HDD.

    I looked at iStat after restarting from the test and it showed that only the optical drive fan was running at high speed after the test, with the slight buzzing fan still buzzing at low speed. I could hear that the optical drive fan was slowly revving down getting slower and slower, iStat showed it was as well and now its back to normal rpm and not revved anymore. I just thought all fans would return to normal after the test unless the optical drive got hot during the test.
    The buzz is not too bad and is only noticeable in a quite room but I'm more concerned about the random grind/static sound the HDD is making ever so often. The sound is very quiet but can still be heard but i don't know what it is, well I know its not the sound of a HDD breaking as I know what that hears like.

    Thanks for the advice. I will have a harder look for it over the weekend, but failing that might try the apple store, then auction sites.
    Reason i wanted it was because I was curious why when I turn on the G5 I get the grey screen with the timer dial, then a blue screen which stays momentarily. I then get the blue screen cascading away down from top to bottom very quickly to reveal a black screen which only remains very briefly. Very briefly as the black screen disappears I see a split second distortion across the bottom of the screen (becomes slightly pixelated and white) before screen goes blue again after which I get the Leopard log in screen. I recently replaced the original HD with a new one, having first cloned my original HD contents to the second HD bay. Then with the new one I re-installed Leopard and migrated across all files from the cloned drive. Everything else works absolutely perfectly, but never noticed the boot up sequence as described above before I did the change over. I guess I just wondered if it was a clue to something that might end up failing in time?
    Anyway any advice on the above would be helpful, otherwise I will source the AHT.

  • Apple Hardware Test Question

    I have a macbook that is currently not starting up from it's internal HD. The drive will not even show up if I hold down option at start-up and attempt to select it as the start-up disk.
    I have the install disks that came with a white macbook, but the computer that I'm working on is a blackbook.
    I have attempted to start-up into AHT by holding down 'd' as instructed, the system configuration test runs, I select the language, but then it says that this version is incompatable with the machine.
    The AHT verison is 3A118
    Is this the right version? Or is there a different version for the blackbook?
    I'm going to try to run TechTool Pro a little bit later.
    Secondly, I am even unable to re-install the OS from the disk that I have. Could this potentiall be a total failure of the HD that I may not even be able to recover the data from?
    Any and all help will be greatly appreciated!

    There have been three MacBook versions. You haven't told us which version MacBook you have, so we can't tell you if that's the right disk or not. The Apple Hardware Test is, as its name suggests, hardware-specific to the model that it shipped with. The correct version isn't dependent on the color of the MacBook, but rather the model/revision. Which processor do you have and what's the speed? Core Duo? Core 2 Duo? 1.8GHz? 2.0GHz? 2.1GHz?
    If the Mac OS X installer on that disk tells you that it can't be installed on that model Mac, then you have the wrong disk. You will need the correct disk for both the Mac OS X installer and the Apple Hardware Test. Or does the Mac OS X install fail at a different place?

    Agree w/ ds store: he's on point!
    I use a Belkin laptop cooler that I picked up at WallyMart (WalMart). has small 11/2 fan also use one for 2TB Time Capsule w/ TC upside down on it to cool. Belkin has USB and works well as TC has a USB port also.
    BTW new iPhone 4S(64GB) runs way too hot w/ AC charger but fine w/ USB as a charger. Battery life, of course is significantly reduced by heat.

  • I have an imac running OSX leopard 10.5.4, and a flashing question mark comes up on the screen. I opened disk utility, and in the sidebar my hard drive is not there. I also did the Hardware test supplied with the install CD, and "no problems were found".

    note: I have not done the extended hardware test yet.

    Can we assumed that the Disk Utility you used was not on your hard disk? If it was on the hard disk you can ignore most of the advice here and we should start again.
    I am am a retired Electrical Engineer with many years electronics and IT experience and advise that whilst it is likely that the hard disk has failed and may never work again this may not necessarily be the case.
    Do you normally hear or feel the disk running and has this changed?
    Have you moved, dropped or hit your Mac while the disk was rotating? - never good for disks.
    Even if the disk is not rotating it may not have failed - there could be an imperfect connection, damaged pcb track, a Mac electronics failure such as disk power etc.
    The disk could be working mechanically and there could be a break in the data route to or from it etc.
    Getting at disks inside some Apple assemblies can be tedious but probably not as bad as you may think - Google for instructions and pictures.
    Much may depend upon how important information on a troublesome disk is. Even with a totally dead disk 90% of data can normally be extracted - ocasionally I have been lucky enough to do this at home - a few years back several experts were offering to to this for about 1,000 USD.
    Trying the disk in another enclosure was good advice.
    You could try gently moving your powered up Mac to see if anything changes.
    It is technically possible for a software (unlikely as issue still exists booting from DVD I assume) or firmware issue to cause your symptoms so it might be wise to try every type of reset you can find before going any further. Firmware normally resides within the electronics - it often affects booting and power supplies etc.

    Hit the 'E' key to select Perform Extended Testing if you are unable to select it with a mouse.
    I've been working on my wife's new iMac (I7 27") that she purchased a few months ago. Because it is so new, I wouldn't even waste my time on it and just sent it back to Apple to have them look at it (currently suffering slow startup times), however we recently moved overseas to Kyiv, Ukraine. During the troubleshooting, I found the following site:

    which informs users how to use Apple's Hardware test. Unfortunately, the app only recognized the wireless keyboard and not the wireless mouse. I didn't know who to contact to have the webpage updated because there is a way you can enable the extended hardware test from the keyboard (by hitting the 'E' key). Unfortunately, I had to figure this out on my own after exhaustive searching on the internet and websites. Hopefully, someone can pass this information along. I wish the app was more keyboard friendly.
    I see some other posts that I haven't tried yet, so hopefully they might resolve me issue.
    If I can't fix the problem, I'm going to have to see if there may be a rep in this country who to replace/fix the unit.

    Yesterday I ran the Apple Hardware test ( Version 3A181 - Perform Extended Testing ) from my MacBook OS Install DVD and Everything passed 100% ( entire test took 57 minutes and 15 seconds )
    Forgot to mention after the Apple Hardware test was finished No Problems Were Found...
    This isn't making any sense to me - Any Suggestions to what the cause of these Safe Boots may be ?

  • Hard drive issues; how to run hardware test

    A couple of weeks ago my hard drive experienced what I would call "minor crashes". The computer booted up to the grey box with the question mark, and would do nothing more. The hard drive also made unpleasant noises. I think I got it back by resetting PRAM, but it happened a second time, and then a PRAM reset again got it back. Needless to say, I'm nervous about this drive.
    I have Apple Care until January '09 (this is an '06 Intel machine) and figure I should try to move on figuring out what's up ASAP (both because I don't want a drive failure, and because I only have a few more months of Care).
    I'm guessing that I should run the extended hardware test, but I can't seem to get it going using the Leopard disk I used to upgrade the OS. Do I need the original install disks (which I can't find, of course!)? What else can I do to determine if I have an issue that calls for hard drive replacement? If I need a new hard drive (it now seems small at 250gb anyhow), will I be able to do it myself (assuming Apple Care won't take care of it)?

    +Some Intel-based Macs ship with Apple Hardware Test and Mac OS X 10.4.x preinstalled on the hard drive. If an Erase and Install installation of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard is performed using a retail Leopard installation disc, Apple Hardware Test will be erased and not reinstalled on these Macs.+
    +If you're in this situation and need to use Apple Hardware Test, simply start from the DVD that came with your computer (not the Leopard installation disc) while holding the "D" key. Apple Hardware Test will run from the DVD.+

  • MBA (mid-2012) SSD failure after 8 weeks Hardware Test

    Brand new MBA mid-2012 (8GB RAM, 128GB SSD running ML 10.8.0).
    Failed to startup - Apple logo on grey screen appeared, then the spinning gear wheel, then a blank screen, then the spinning gear wheel, then a blank screen, repeating ad nauseum...
    I reset PRAM and SMC - no change
    I opened in Single User Mode to run fsck - no change, then in Verbose mode to see what messages appeared (flashing messages of appleid verification timeouts)
    Disk Utility - no problems detected
    DiskWarrior - no problems detected
    Tech Tool Pro - (1) SMART check picked up 7 SSD failures/errors:
    [Wear Levelling Count, Program Fail Count(total), Erase Fail Count (total), Power-off Retract Count, Media Wear Out Indicator, Total LBAs Written and Total LBAs Read all 7 FAILED], remainder of SMART tests passed, and SSD PASSED SMART check.
    Then (2) Surface Scan checked all 236+million blocks, NO BAD BLOCKS identified/detected.
    Very strange indeed!! - booted into Recovery Drive, verified and all ok, no problems starting from this partition! Problem lies on normal boot partition (of course...!)
    Was able to boot from external ML HDD and was able to pull all files off Air (interestingly Carbon Copy Cloner reported one text file sitting on bad block and was unable to copy/clone)
    Time to get serious: Spoke with Apple Tech here in Australia late on a Saturday pm (thanks Olin!)
    Ran Apple Hardware Test in Extended mode [took me back to System 7 days with very old icon!!] - took around 1hr and reported error "4HDD/11/40000000 SATA(0,0)" so it looks like new MBA is heading back to Apple!
    I am thinking about re-installing ML from the Recovery Drive in case I can get the MBA running again to make sure I have all my file backed up, but it looks like an 8 week old MBA is no more...
    anyone else seen this in mew MBAs? would hate to think I am the only one! plenty of other discussions around this error on HDD machines, but haven't found anything for this error for a SSD.

    I have a 15-inch, retina, 2.7 GHz, 16 GB RAM, 768 GB flash drive MacBook Pro notebook, running 10.8.2
    I have noticed that if I run the extended hardware test while connected to the power supply I do not get the error 4HDD/11/40000000:SATA(0,0) but if I run the same test while on battery power I get that error.
    Does the same happen to you?
    Any idea of what the problem is?

  • Hardware Test Results?

    I use the istat pro widget on my 15" Macbook pro which told me my right-side fan had stopped working but every now and again it appears to kick in. So I ran a extended hardware test and it returned this code "4MOT/1/40000002:Left_Middle-Front". Can anyone tell me what this is or what to do next? I'm hoping this is not the logic board, fingers crossed.

  • After an apple hardware test on my iMac I got an error code ?

    So I did an extended hardware test on my apple imac and after an hour of testing i got this error code: 4MOT1/140000003: HDD-1363. The next day I did another hardware test on my apple imac but this time iI did a quick hardware test and after about five minutes of testing this time I got the same result except this time the 4-digit code or number after the 'HDD-' changed to a different one, like... 1476. So what does this mean, I mean my computer is working perfectly fine without any problems (except for that one time when my brother punched my iMac's screen really hard a couple of times and a couple of hard punches on the hard drive however it was working fine but he did it again and it froze the time he did it again and i had to restart it but everything was STILL working fine after I restarted it !) but when I do the Hard ware test I get those errors so what does this mean ? Is it possible to fix ? Would apple fix it for free as my warranty has expired ?

    don't know why, but try using Disk Utility to repair the drive:
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
    Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
