Extended Network Error

Hey guys, I hope one of you have an answer for this problem I am facing:
I bought an Airport Express (v. 7.6.4) about 6 months ago and it was working perfectly. I haven't moved the A.E. at all.
I come home one day and there is a flashing amber light on the A.E. I go to my iMac (v. 10.8.5) look on Airport Utility (v. 6.3.1) and its says Extended Network with an orange light beside it.
It tells me to make sure that it is in range (which is irrelevant because above it says that the connection is excellent, and it is physically well in range), and the password is the same (which it is), and that it is set-up correctly (as far as I'm concerned I set it up correctly - just go to 'Other Wi-Fi Devices' and follow the instructions from there) and that it is working correctly (-maybe thats the problem??).
If I click 'Ignore', the A.E. turns green, but doesn't actually extend the network.
I've tried hard, and factory resets, and nothing has changed.
Thanks in advance for the responses.

Full network reset.. restart in order.. modem.. AE.. then Express with a few minutes gap between them..
Otherwise a full reset of everything and start over.. make sure the AE first is fully connected and working to the router.. probably in Bridge as your NZ ISP do not support PPPOE generally.. then setup Express again.. if it fails.. no problem do it again..
This time lock in down.. and most important DO NOT USE 7.6.4 it was is and ever shall be a lousy revision.. go back to 7.6.1 which was the last one that actually worked.
Factory reset.. use all smb naming.. ie short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric for everything in the network.
Then fix the wireless channels so they don't wander all over the place..
Install 5.6 airport utility since that is still possible in Mountain Lion.. it is far superior to v6.. or at least you can see what is happening.
There is no log view in v6.. you can see the whole log and how the wireless clients are working in v5.. all at once..
How to load 5.6 into later Lion & ML
1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
Leave the package open on the desktop so you can see the file. AirportUtility56.pkg
2. Download and install unpkg.
http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. If your Mac refuses to run the software, because it wasn’t downloaded from the Apple store, go to security in preferences and allow other software to work.. this is limitation of trade methinks. You can set back later if you like.
Now drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. in finder, open the new directory, drill down.. applications, utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall version 6 (now 6.3 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. although I have had no problems when doing so.
Here is what v5 offers.
Here is the equivalent from v6 toyland utility. Notice how pretty pictures predominate.. No hard core info .. whatsoever. No idea really what is going on.
Even the dotted lines to indicate wireless are actually wrong.. they do not connect like that all.. so the picture is not even accurate.. both extended routers are connected independently to the main router.. not as shown in this shot.. with pretty lines drawn that seem to indicate they are connected to each other.

  • "extended network" error with airport express

i have my time capsule set up in my living room as the primary, and since there are several concrete walls in my house, i need to extend the wifi connection in order to get signal from my room which is located at the very end of my house.  I've had my airport express placed near the doorway of my room which should be getting a clear signal from time capsule in the living room.
everything works fine for few days, and the blinking amber light started going off on the airport express.  and from the airport utility it shows 1 notification on my airport express.  It said an error of "extended network", if i choose to ignore it, the indication light turns back to green, but then i wont be able to connect to the internet.
is there some kind of settings need to be adjusted?  please help~~~
    my settings on airport express:
    Router Mode: Off (Bridge Mode)
    Connect using: DHCP
    Configure IPv6: Link-Local Only

i've tried to plug the airport express literally right next to the time capsule, and it still showing the "extended network" error message.  so it can't be the signal strength issue.
    Help please....
    additonal info:
    my time capsule (primary) :
    Connect Using - DHCP
    Router Mode: DHCP and NAT
    DHCP Range: 10.0.1.2 to 10.0.1.200
    my airport express (extension) :
    Connect Using - DHCP
    IPv4 Address: 10.0.1.10
    Router Address: 10.0.1.1
    DNS Servers: 10.0.1.1

I am getting an un expected error message when updating the setting to "extend network".  Is there an obvious setting I may be missing?  Cisco router being used.

If you are trying to "extend" using wireless only, you may not be aware that Apple designed the "extend" feature as a proprietary setting to only work with other Apple routers.
It is extremely unlikely that this will work with a Cisco router.
If your plans call for connecting the AirPort Express to the Cisco router using a wired Ethernet connection, it should be possible to configure the Express that way.

  • High number of "Network error code 0x2746" in extended events log

In the extended event log of our database server I see 880 consecutive identical errors, all occurring between
17:00:49 and 17:15:25. The message is:
Network error code 0x2746 occurred while establishing a connection; the connection has been closed. This may have been caused by client or server login timeout expiration. Time spent during login: total 27 ms, enqueued 0 ms, network writes 0 ms, network
reads 25 ms, establishing SSL 8 ms, negotiating SSPI 0 ms, validating login 0 ms, including user-defined login processing 0 ms. [CLIENT: 10.127.214.32]
The timings in each message are a little bit different. It might be interesting to know the averages for these timings, so here is the message again, now with the timings replaced by averages (rounded to 1 digit):
Network error code 0x2746 occurred while establishing a connection; the connection has been closed. This may have been caused by client or server login timeout expiration. Time spent during login: total 32.5 ms, enqueued 0.5 ms, network writes 0.9 ms,
network reads 29.4 ms, establishing SSL 8.3 ms, negotiating SSPI 0.0 ms, validating login 0.0 ms, including user-defined login processing 0.0 ms. [CLIENT: 10.127.214.32]
The client is a Citrix server that runs a COTS program. It serves approx. 20 users.
What can be the cause of this? Can it only be the program that automatically tries to reconnect?

  • Extended network  unexpected error please try again

I am trying to re setup my airport extreme network I use two time capsuals and three airport extreme's all of varying generations. all was working fine as an extended network via ethernet for 11 months now trying to reset up the network ... I set up the main one from the modem to a switch no problem plug a mac into any of the data sockets no problem so network works fine. plug airport into sockets and although all airports are found every time i attempt to set up extended network " unexpected error try again " I have reset all airports time and time again, I am trying Utillity 5.6 and 6.1  and neather working better than the other. Any suggestions please

Yuk, your configuration looks like quite a mess. Even Senior Advisors at AppleCare won't help troubleshoot your networking past a limit of just 3 Apple routers
And that's assuming you didn't even have the switches involved...
Technically, what you mean is you have everything set up as a ROAMING network...not really extended.
Are you trying to mix wifi-extentions... to the roaming network? It's still a bit unclear.

  • SQL SERVER 2012 Installed to SMB share Error 59 (An unexpected network error occurred)

I have installed SQL 2012 on a clustered file share. When I try to add space to extend the log file for a database I get the following error
    Msg 5149, Level 16, State 3, Line 1
MODIFY FILE encountered operating system error 59(An unexpected network error occurred.) while attempting to expand the physical file '\\server\share\path to ldf file.ldf'
The SQL service is running under a local domain account that does not have administrator rights to the system.  The service account does have full disk and share permissions and the service starts without any problems.  I have applied all the cluster
hotfixes and all the current Windows Updates.  If I log into the system as the SQL service domain user account I can access the share and have full rights to it.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,

The LDF file is 16 GB
Free space on the drive is 62 GB
Expansion is set to 10 percent
I have several instances on this cluster, some are installed to drive letters and others to the clustered file share.  The error only occurs on the SQL 2012 instances that are installed to the clustered file share.
I installed them to the clustered file share because I am running out of drive letters in the cluster.

  • 7.6.4 killing extended networks?

I've got a 5th gen Extreme serving as my router and dhcp server. Attached to it via ethernet I have a 3rd gen Extreme and a 2nd gen Express. All were running firmware 7.6.3. This config had been stable for a long time. I upgraded all of the units to 7.6.4 and that stability went away. It appears like the router would die - would not pass packets via wif and claimed it lost connection to the internet. I swapped the 5th and 3rd gen Extremes just to see if there was a unit problem. No luck. I downgraded the main Extreme - no luck. Once I downgraded all of the units the network regained its stability.
Anyone else seeing strangeness with 7.6.4 and extended networks?

I would like to chime in with my similar experience.
My dual-channel setup is Airport Extreme (4th gen) and Airport Express (2nd gen) (wired to the Extreme) in addition to an Airport Express (1st gen) wirelessly extending the 2.4 ghz SSID.
As soon as I upgraded all access points to 7.6.4 I started having intermittent dropouts and delays on what appeared to be all my devices (including iPads and iPhones). By trial and error I singled the culprit out to be the 2nd gen Airport Express. Digging deeper, I found that every time my laptop (with Intel 6300 AGN) was associated with that specific access point I got predictable ping timeouts for 5 seconds every 10-20 seconds ad nauseum. It would sometimes start out ok for a minute or so, then almost like clockwork it would start with the regular timeouts.
The solution turned out to be to downgrade to 7.6.3 for the 2nd gen only (I rinsed and repeated 4-5 times, making me pretty sure).
Other actions I tried (unsuccessfully) to resolve the issue:
Remove the 1st gen from the network
Move the access points around the house to rule out local interference issues
Downgrade the Extreme only, while keeping the 2nd gen at 7.6.4
Connect to the 2.4 ghz SSID (same result)
Admittedly, I did not bother trying to set the 2nd gen as the only ISP gateway/wireless device instead of having it wired to the Extreme. Mostly because of this: One of my co-workers brought a laptop with the same Intel wireless chipset home with him to perform the same tests on his Apple network. Same result - ping timeouts at similar intervals. He is out of luck though - his single Extreme-AC router has no previous firmware to downgrade to...
Now this might seem anecdotal, but it would appear that the newer devices Airport devices are susceptible to this specific issue while the older ones are home free. Anyone got any theory they can share as to what might be causing this? Any glaring oversight in my research?

  • Creating and Extended Network with 2 Airport Express Units

I had an extended network using 2 express units but one of them broke. The old network was setup with an older version of Airport Utility and I can't seem to repeat the set up a new network with the new express unit I have bought.
The simple setup procedure using Airport Utility 5.5.1 only appears to allow you to 'join' the remote Express unit to an existing network, there is no 'extend remotely' option.
I remember doing it last time by creating a WDS network which agrees with instructions I have found here - http://broadcast.oreilly.com/2009/03/taming-an-airport-express-wds.html
I set up the first Express as a base station with a network and select 'Participate in a WDS network' and 'Allow this network to be extended' under the wireless tab. Under the WDS tab I 'Allow wireless clients' and add the hardware address of the second express unit.
I then update the express unit but I get a WDS error which states, "This Airport wireless device is set up as part of a WDS network but no other AirPort wireless devices were found."
This seems to be a chicken and egg situation.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Alan

    Alan, welcome to the discussions!
It appears that you want to set up a WDS arrangment, correct?
But, I can't figure out whether you want to configure it with a "base" and two "remotes", or whether you want to configure it with a "base", "relay" and "remote"
Can you clarify? I'll send you a link with instructions from forum expert user Tesserax with step by step instructions. Just need to know what set of instructions to send.

Any ideas on how to prevent it?

Try the Search function - and You get answer much faster.

Can there be any external hard disks - if so How is/are it/they formatted ? Must be Mac OS Extended (hfs) if used for Video.
UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - works for most but not for VIDEO.
What this means in Your situation is above me.

I fixed the problem.. but it was very, very strange. I had a very long section for credits and set the line spacing to 1.0.. for some reason this caused it. I removed it, and it worked fine. I put it back, and I couldn't preview or play the video.
I don't know why that could cause that big of a problem, but it did..

  • Difference between a roaming network and a extended network?

I am looking to set up 5 new Airport Extremes at the office.  Looking online for the best setup, I came across two network types; roaming and extended.  Which one will be faster.  I have a feeling that a roaming network would be, but I am unsure.  The office is rather large, so I also had a feeling that this would slow down an extended network.  Any thoughts?
Also the network will have around 40 PCs, 20 Macs, and possibly 4 Apple Tvs.

A "roaming" network is one in which all of the wireless access points are connected to a common Ethernet "backbone".
Since there is virtually no bandwidth loss in a wire, the overall performance of this type of network is superior to any other type of extended networks.
In an "extended" network, the wireless access points are connected together wirelessly. Since a wireless signal loses strength and speed quickly through the air, or any obstructions in the signal path, this type of network is far less desireable than a "roaming" network.
In addition, an "extended" network is much more likely to pick up wireless interference, which will further degrade the operation of the network.
Check with any networking pro and they will quickly confirm that an "extended" network using wireless to connect access points would not be suitable for a business or any other application where there will be a number of users on the network simultaneously.
Speaking of a network pro, a modest investment that you might make to have an IT specialist come to your site, take some measurements and discuss your requirements with you.....then present you with a written proposal specifying what the network can and cannot do would be a wise thing to consider.
This will undoubtedly save you more money in the long run than trial by error, not to mention the numerous headaches that will occur along the way. Unless you have done this type of thing in the past with success, it might be best to put egos aside and let the pros tackle a job for a pro.
One final thought.....Apple wireless routers are designed for home use.....not commercial applications. There just might be a reason that you will not find Apple routers in the control room of an Apple store.

  • "extended network" warning

    Greetings,
I have a Aiport Extreme running version 7.6.4 which is connected to my time capsule (same version) for my home network. I also have an airport express (v 7.6.4) which i've configured to extend my wireless network. For whatever reason I'm getting an "extended network" warning. The express is in range and configured with the right password and network name. Any suggestions on how to correct this?
    Thanks,
    Ryan.

OK, thanks for the clarification on that.
The shortcut fix to try if you want to possibly save a few minutes:
Power off the AirPort Extreme and the AirPort Express
Wait a minute, then power up the AirPort Extreme and let it run a full minute
Then, power up the AirPort Express to see if it is extending correctly without errors
It will take more time, but is a better procedure:
Power off the Time Capsule, AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express and wait a minute
Then, power up either the Time Capsule or AirPort Extreme (whichever you consider your "main" device) and let it run a minute
Then, power up the other device for a minute
Finally power up the AirPort Express
    Please report on your results.

  • I'm confused please help me...using airport to extend network

I bought an apple airport extreme base station a few days ago. I was told I could use it to extend my networks range. I currently have tv Internet and phone through xfinity/Comcast. My xfinitity router is an SMC and I need to use it cuz the phone runs off it. I live in a 4 level townhome and it's range *****. Doesn't work in all rooms on the 4th floor. So I bought the base station and hooked it up to the SMC via an Ethernet and thought I set up right. But I noticed the range didn't improve so I opened the airport utility on my MacBook pro I clicked on the base station on the next window under wireless under a drop down I chose "extend network" or something like that. It said wait a few moments for update then I got an error. So I called apple to ask what I was doing wrong and they said I couldn't use an airport to extend the network of a 3rd party router. Not unless I put them in different rooms and connected them with a super long Ethernet. So now I'm confused is that right?  All I want is a better signal in my house. Please someone help me and explain to me how I make that happen..

I wasn't able to figure out how to set up the roaming network.
It is the same thing that you have set up now except you use the same wireless network name, same security settings and password as the "main" router and make sure that Bridge Mode is being used.
We can easily troubleshoot this if you want.
Now I'm just wondering if I could have done the same thing with the cheaper express base station?
You could, but it would not be dual band operation like you have now, and no more than 10 wireless clients would be able to connect to the AirPort Express. You also have available Ethernet ports on the AirPort Extreme in case you need to connect a device that way. In addition, the Extreme has a much better Wi-Fi antenna than the Express.

  • Software update - networking error (Mac OS 10.4.11)

    Hi everyone,
I've been having problems running software update on my 867 MHz Powerbook G4. Every time I try to run software update, I get the same message: "A networking error has occurred: timed out (-1001). Make sure you can connect to the Internet, then try again."
    I'm using Mac OS X 10.4.11.
My network is running fine, and I've run Network Diagnostics several times fully through to confirm this.
I've tried repairing the disk permissions through disk utility a few times, and nothing's changed.
I tried copying three files from my Library / Preferences folder, along with my Caches folder (after reading that this could fix the problem), but still, software update doesn't work.
I tried running the 10.4.11 combo update for PPC, rebooted in safe mode, and repaired my disk permissions again, but still, no luck.
There's another problem that might be related: Safari can't load pages. Firefox 2.0.0.18 works fine, but Safari doesn't do anything. Also, closing the Safari window (Ctrl + W) doesn't work, quitting the program is the only way to make it go away.
Thanks in advance for the help, it's much appreciated!

Hi James, and a warm welcome to the forums!
To expand a bit on Sig's great advice...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
Also, how much free space do you have on your HDD?
