Extended network fails after 24hrs

Hi,
This has been bothering me for a while now. Hope someone can help.
I have an Airport Extreme offering a wireless network in my home. I've set it to allow an extended network.
Recently I purchased an Airport Express and set it up to extend the existing network.
This all works fine for a while, but after about a day the network falls over. My Mac says the network is still there, however I can't access the internet (w/ Safari) anymore.
When I reset the Extreme (i.e. power off/on), the network comes back on for another 24hrs at which time I have to reset the Extreme again... This can't be the intended design.
If I switch off the Express, there are no problems whatsoever. Its when I switch the Express on that the network "expires" after about 24hrs and requires a daily reset of the Extreme.
Also interesting to note is that I have a computer connected to the Extreme via UTP-cable and *that* doesn't suffer from any connectivity problems after 24hrs.
However, running the Airport Utility when the network is down -- either wirelessly or on the wired PC -- doesn't find the Extreme until I've reset it.
Any suggestions as to what might be the cause and what I could try before calling Apple would be greatly appreciated.
[UPDATE]: My problem looks a bit like this: http://is.gd/tqU7GJ I'm trying the solutions offered there and updating here as I I try out stuff. Don't let that stop you from offering extra/alternate options though ;-)

Sofar (since May 11) nothing new. Everything working flawlessly. As far as I'm concerned it looks like the logging level on the Express did the trick.
For future reference, here are the (I think relevant) settings that currently seem to work best:
Airport Express:
* Wireless mode = Extend a wireless network
* Using DHCP
* AirTunes enabled
* Syslog level = 3
* Allow SNMP = off
* IPv6 mode = Link-local only
Airport Extreme:
* Wireless mode = Create a wireless network
* Radio mode and channel selection = Automatic (using wide channels)
* Guest network enabled
* DHCP reservation enabled for the Express
* DHCP lease time: 1 day
* NAT enabled @ 10.0.1.253
* Syslog level = 5 (hmm...)
* IPv6 Mode = Link-local only

  • Network fails after upgrade

hey guys, i just installed Arch Linux, and the first thing i did waas update the whole system via pacman -Syu.  (i installed arch using the BASE iso only, so only the base system was installed)  it downloaded all the updates for my system and installed them.  I then installed Xorg, then gnome, then the Nvidia modules and put it in my rc.conf modules section.
upon rebooting, it says "network   [FAILED]" resulting in no internet (on the bright side my Nvidia xorg worked out)
Trying a ifconfig eth0 down then back up results in it doing nothing. When looking at the output of ifconfig, eth0 does not show an ipaddress, however its jhardware address, so i fugre it is no accepting an IP address. I tried dhcpcd eth0 and again, it stalls for a bit then nothing.  I checked my Dmesg and nothing relevant appears after running those commands except it sayins Eth0 link changed 100Mbps or somthing along those lines.
Keep in mind, the internet worked fine, obviously, since i updated the whole system upon a fresh install.  I am stumped on what has happened!
    Any ideas?

If I had to take a guess, your /etc/rc.conf was overwritten and perhaps the necessary kernel module for your nic isn't being loaded.

  • Extending wireless network fails after 7.5.2 update

I have two Airport Extremes; one creating a network that is allowed to be extended and the other is used to extend the network. This worked fine until the 7.5.2 update I installed. Now the relay is unable to connect and I get the error "This wireless network cannot be extended". All I did was to update the firmware on both airports; I am running the latest 5.5.2 Utility, latest Snow Leopard.
    Did Apple break this feature?

    Welcome to the discussions, Paul!
    Did Apple break this feature?
Not that we can tell based on forum questions, and our own experience, but anything is possible, especially if you tried the update over wireless.
Have you power cycled the complete network? If not...
Power everything down, order is not important. Wait a few minutes
Start the modem first and let it run by itself for 4-5 minutes
Start your AirPort Exptreme the same way
Start your AirPort Express the same way
Start your devices the same way
Any other troubleshooting steps that you have taken to this point?

  • 881 VPN fails after 24hrs/IKE key lifetime

    Hi all,
This is my first post on the support forms and I only just got my CCNA, so please bear with me and don't shoot me if I pose a slightly newbish perspective on things. Thanks in advance.
We've got a central office (actually quite small) where several IPSec connections connect to. Two of these connections are Cisco 881 routers. One of them works fine, the other craps out after 24 hours (coincidentally also the IKE key lifetime). When I mean "craps out", it means the VPN worked fine from the get go, until 24 hours later. Only a reload will bring back the VPN tunnel. I've verified my PFS and DPD configurations are solid, because these kind of symptoms would most likely occur when these configurations aren't in order.
The two 881 configurations are quite similar. The only differences between the two are some details in the PPPoE configurations and (quite obviously) the IP address space for the two sites. Both operate on the premise of a point to point connection (no multipoint stuff going on here).
I have examined all I can. It took me two weeks to make sure I exhausted all my options before I post my issue here.
Here is a brief list of things I've done.
    - Checked configuration of central router (which is a Mikrotik RB800 btw)
    - Verified that the central router is not the cause of the VPN not coming back. Rebooted it as a last resort; VPN stays down. Rebooted 881, VPN comes back.
    - I've downgraded the 881 firmware image from version 152.4.M2 to 151.4.M4 (the succesful 881 was running the 151.4.M4 image, and I found some Ipsec issues in the caveat for version 152.4.M2), but to no avail.
    - I've tried to clear several crypto components hoping to restore key exchanging, also to no avail. Only a reload will suffice.
    I've included the 881's config:

Can anyone shed some light as what could be going on?
    Much obliged!

Unfortunately I do not have a support contract for our hardware. I wouldn't even know how to get one.
However, we do pay top dollar for the equipment and it seems one it's components doesn't work as advertised. So if no support is given I will have to try warrenty instead. This does mean I have to replace the unit with a competitor brand which isn't something I'm keen to do because I want to use Cisco as our main brand. This issue effectively nukes my entire plan.
Given our work load, CPU power isn't an issue. The encryption level is set to this level because I'm paranoid. Which I reckon is a good thing when it comes to network security (correct me if I'm wrong). Do you suspect these settings could be of any influence in this particular case?
If I remember correctly I used the "debug crypto isakmp" or "debug crypto isakmp errors" and "debug crypto ipsec" (also perhaps with the "error" suffix), I'm not sure.

  • 802.1x Authentication for University Network Fails After 10.5.5 Update

Hi everyone, I hope that someone might be able to help me with my problem. I used to connect to the internet through my university's network at my dorm using the ethernet connection. Even before when I was using 10.5.4 I had to do the 802.1x authentication manually after every boot.
Now that I updated to 10.5.5 everytime I try to connect it tells me "802.1x Authentication has failed", does anyone have similar problems, solutions??? This is everything the IT department's homepage has to offer: http://www.unibz.it/ict/8021x_mac1/index.html?LanguageID=EN&
    Thanks a lot!
Btw, it seems the update somehow messed up Timemachine as well, but that doesn't bother me as much as the internet connection.

    Hi,
You probably need to install a root certificate into your Mac's system keychain so that your Mac knows it can trust the University's Certificate Authority (CA).
They should be able to provide you with a file for the CA and instructions.
    cheers

  • Wireless networking fails after AirPort Extreme Update 2007-003

I have just tried installing AirPort Extreme Update 2007-003 on a MacBook Pro and wireless networking, which used to work, now no longer works.
My wireless network consists of the MBP and a Thomson Speedtouch 585 ADSL modem/router.
The symptom is that no connection can be obtained - the Airport menubar item flashes continually about once a second, as does the WLAN activity light on the 585.
The Console.log reports (repeatedly) that "configd crashed" and the corresponding information in /Library/Logs/CrashReporter/configd.crash.log says that:
    "Command: configd
    Path: /usr/sbin/configd
    Parent: launchd [1]
    Version: ??? (???)
    PID: 473
    Thread: 1
    Exception: EXCBADACCESS (0x0001)
    Codes: KERNINVALIDADDRESS (0x0001) at 0xb1e0cf60"
(There is a lot more diagnostic info - which I can supply if it helps)
All system software is up to date (Tiger 10.4.9) - I had just run the system updater.
If I disable Airport (i.e. wireless networking) and connect the MBP to the 585 by Ethernet, then it all works fine.
Something similar happened to my system about 4 weeks ago - I got around it that time by rerunning the MacOS 10.4.9 Combo update - but this time that doesn't work.
Any suggestions on why configd is crashing and how to stop it?
MacBookPro 15" Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Thanks for your help
    Curiouser & curiouser!
My answer was going to be that keychain had nothing to do with the problem. If I log in as a different user (even a freshly-created one), I still get the same symptoms. I was also getting the same symptoms with a rescue copy of 10.4.9 on an external hard disk.
However, I thought I would have a look at my keychain using the Keychain Access utility (which, I seem to remember, has some recovery/repair functions). Lo and behold, the Keychain Access utility crashes after about 2 seconds and the crash report in ~/library/logs looks similar to one for configd. Here is a sample:

So it looks as if something is messing up my keychain (all my keychains?) and that in turn crashes both configd and keychain access.
Do you have any suggestions on where to go from here? There are two issues:
How to stop keychain getting corrupted again?
How to repair the corrupted keychain if I can't use Keychain Acess? - can you just delete the keychain file and then re-enter passwords as and when necessary?
Meanwhile I can experiment with reloading my rescue copy of 10.4.9. If this fault is reproducable, then I guess I ought to file a bug report with Apple

  • Network Fails after 5 hours of traffic

There is agroup of network conected to a Cisco 1811 ISR through site to site VPN. Everything goes fine but after 5 or 6 hours of traffic , the users can not reach any more the servers and even when the routers are restarded , the problem remain the same. Only when the server is restarted , the users can log in it. This happen only from users behind the routers. The other users that are in a bridge network , dont have any problem. In routers are configured DLSW for SNA routing.

    Hi
do confirm whether the tunnel is between router to router or router to anyother device ?
during the freeze condition did u try pinging the remote peer from the router or from the LAN from where ur trying to access the servers ?
Also did u try checking whether the servers are respsonding welll in their local network ?
do check out whether correct sizing has been done on the server for max no of simultaneous/concurrent user sessions..

  • Time Machine backup fails in extended network

    Dear all,
I've recently setup an extended network using 2 additional AirPort Express units connected to the main Airport Extreme modem (all working well). I'm using the Extreme for Time Machine Backups, which used to work just fine as well.
However, when connected to the Expresses, the Time Machine Backups fail with the message that the backup file is already in use. I'm guessing the Express modem tries to connect to the backup file, while the Extreme is keeping the file stand-by or something.
Does anybody know a fix to this problem?
    Kind regards,
    Dennis

It took a Snow Leopard a while but after 2 days it started working again. I've checked whether the connection was directly to the Extreme, but the connection actually went through one of the bridged Expresses.
I guys one just has to hope for the best ;-)
I've upgraded to Lion last week and backup works fine with the new operating system as well.

  • For the past few hours I have been trying to download ios 7.0.4 from itunes onto my iPhone after trying many times it would give me a error saying network failed! then i tried to download Ios 7.0.4 manually and then put it on but it keeps failing?

For the past few hours I have been trying to download ios 7.0.4 from itunes onto my iPhone after trying many times it would give me a error saying network failed! then i tried to download Ios 7.0.4 manually and then put it on but it keeps failing? i have tried everything that i have came across and nothing seems to work please help!

I venture to say you have a Windows PC.
If so, before beginning the download try temporarily disabling your antivirus, anti-adware, anti-spyware, and any other anti-whatever that is required with the insecure OS your computer is running.

  • [AT&T 4S] Phone forced to Extended Network, won't come back

My phone recently showed that it was in the Extended Network despite being in an area of 4G/3G coverage. I know that there is valid coverage in the location because I had another iPhone 4S/AT&T user sitting right next to me with 4G service and full bars. It will remain in "Extended Network" (complete with reduced speeds) until I apply the only solution that I've found after numerous other solutions failed.
I tried the following solutions to no avail:
Turning on Airplane Mode and then turning it off
    Resetting my network settings
    Resetting my cellular data settings
    Turned off/on Settings>Cellular Data, Settings>Data Roaming
    Hard restart of the phone
    Turning phone off/on
    Removing and reinserting SIM card
The only solution that I've found to work is to do the following:
    Remove the SIM card
Find another person that has a 4S on a DIFFERENT CARRIER (i.e., Verizon)
Remove their SIM card and insert it into my phone
Wait a minute or two to force the phone to go into "Activation Required" mode
I eject the DIFFERENT CARRIER SIM card
    Put mine back in
Wait a minute or two until finally it somehow re-establishes itself onto the network and my 4G comes back
My question: is there an easier way to force the "Activation Required" mode to come up, or to achieve what this is doing? Like I said, simply popping my SIM card out/in doesn't work - that other carrier's card seems to be a key part of the process... I'm just worried that there won't always be someone with a 4S and a different carrier somewhere where I can use their SIM card....
    Thanks!

Your phone is hacked, or inserting a SIM card from a different carrier would hot trigger a request to activate - it would tell you that no SIM is inserted.  The hacking/jailbreaking is the source or this problem. No further help can be given here.

  • Packet Loss When Extending Network?

    Hi there, everyone.
I just purchased the Airport Extreme AC after upgrading to 802.11AC devices in the home. On its own, the Extreme AC performs flawlessly - consistent connections, max speed my ISP provides, no-lag, no studdering, no packet loss. I was dissapointed with the range of the device at the far ends of my home, so I set up my previous generation Airport Extreme to extend the network.
It extends the network fine, speeds are about half of what I get at the source, but the issue is that when it is part of the network, I experience packet loss, anywhere from 3% to 8%. I've tested this multiple times, unplugging, testing, replugging, testing. It happens both wirelessly and through ethernet. The issue is no question caused by the previous gen Airport extending the network.
Any help here would be great!
    Setup:
    - Motorla Surfboard SB6141
    - WAN into Airport Extreme AC
    - Previous generation Airport Extreme to extend the network, no special settings.
Don't be afraid to use techincal terminology to help me. I can follow and understand the majority of it, as I'm pretty into all of this.

I'm not aware of anything that has changed in the 802.11ac version of the AirPort base stations that would induce the packet loss that you are seeing with an extended network over using an earlier generation. I am assuming, of course, that you are extending another Apple wireless router ... correct?
Typically I would recommend that you would review the placement of the extending base station to be sure that it is in the optimal spot to reproduce the signal with the greatest amount of bandwidth possible. (Ref: This AirPort User Tip)

  • Time Capsule & Airport Express Extended Network loses connection!

OK, so I am an Apple virgin of 2 months experience, after many many years with Windows based PCs, so please be patient and gentle with me. Sorry about the long explanation.....
My set-up comprises of a Time Capsule, which is connected to the Internet via a NetGear ASDL modem. Both pieces of equipment are situated in my wife's office on the first floor of our house. My office is on the ground floor, where I have a 27" iMac and an Airport Express which is connected to a printer via the USB port. The Airport Express is sited about 10 feet from the iMac.
All software and firmware are lastest versions - TC v7.5, AX v7.4.2 & Airport Utility v5.5.
For the past 2 months, I have only been using the AX to print wirelessly and the set-up has worked faultlessly.
Earlier this week, I decided change the configuration to extend the network to allow me to use my laptop & iPhone in areas of the ground floor where I had no signal. I followed the online instructions and first changed the TC to check the box to 'allow this network to be extended', after updating the configuration successfully I moved to the AX. Here I changed the wireless mode to 'Extend a wireless network', selected the network name and checked the 'Allow wireless clients' box. This also updated successfully.
Everything ran correctly and the range of the network was greatly increased.......great, job done...not!
After about 3 hours the iMac lost the connection and the TC disappeared from the Airport Utility pane and refused to reappear. I checked but also couldn't connect or see any network on the laptop or iPhone, so have dismissed a fault with the iMac. I finally got things back up after doing a power reset of the TC, but after a few hours same problem occurred, and occurred and occurred. By clicking the Airport Utility icon on the top right of the screen and following the prompts from 'no Internet connection', I can at least get things up and working without a power reset of the TC, but the connection still drops after 2-5 hours each time.
My first call to Apple Support led to a full reset and re-config of both the TC and AX, setting the extended network up as I had done originally. The only difference was an iMac reset (alt/cmd P&R on power up) and changing the 2.4Ghz channel from 1 to 11. This had no affect and the connection drop-out problem continued.
My second call to Apple Support led to me being passed to a Level 2 Techie, who first suggested that I tried disabling the Guest Network - tried it, and it made no difference. I was then told to try a WDS network, which whilst not losing connection, is slower and has less range than the original extended network and frankly sounds a cop-out.
Has anyone had a similar problem, anyone solved the problems, can anyone offer any help or advice please.. I'd appreciate any input....thanks.

Similar problem here. Cable Modem (Moto SB6120)->AEBS (802.11n dual-band)>AX (802.11n) for wireless connection to MacBook Pro running Mac OS X 10.6.2. AEBS configured as dual-band: 801.11a/n at 5GHZ and 801.11b/g/n at 2.4 GHZ. AX configured to wirelessly extend the AEBS 5GHz 802.11a/n network. I am able to run on the extended 5GHz network (via AX) for varying lengths of time, until the internet connection dies. When this occurs, I am able to switch over to the 2.4GHz network to get back online. Solution up until now has been to unplug the AX, then plug it back in. After the AX restarts, I am able to hop back onto its 5GHz signal and get to the internet. However, the internet connection on this band will drop again after some time.
I was on the phone with Apple Support twice in the past week to get this resolved, but no joy. Senior Advisor seemed to think that my AX was working properly, and that that the problem could be with my AEBS -- perhaps the 5GHz antenna might be bad in my AEBS? Seems odd to me, since both my AEBS and AX are less than 2 months old...
I just read the post from LocoDoc and decided to see if I could replicate the problem. Sure enough, when I am connected to the internet via my AX extended 5GHz network signal and a Time Machine backup starts, the internet connection quits. Only recourse is to restart the AX. Note that I do not experience this problem with Time Machine while connected wirelessly straight to the AEBS 5GHz signal. Only when I am connected to the "extended" signal via the AX.

  • Migration Assistant fails after showing 157 KB or 0 KB to transfer

I spent 4 days trying to get OS X Migration Assistant to successfully migrate between two desktop machines, both running Mavericks 10.9.3.
The two machines were connected by an ethernet cable, and all migrations would fail after 16-24 hours, with the progress bar stalling out at "Less than one minute remaining".
Before every failed transfer, Migration Assistant would inaccurately show "157 KB selected" for transfer if the "Computer & Network Settings" option was checked, or "0 KB selected" for transfer if only the "Applications" or "Documents & Data" options were checked.
I finally realized that the migrations were failing because I was opening and clicking through Migration Assistant on both the source and target machines at around the same time.
The eventual solution was to open Migration Assistant on the source machine first, and click through as far as I could until the source machine was actively looking for other machines on the network.
As long as I waited until then to open Migration Assistant on the target machine, it would correctly calculate the size of the files to be transferred and the migration would succeed.
So, the order in which you open Migration Assistant seems to make a big difference: source first, then target.
My problem is solved, but only after several days of hassle, so I wanted to post this in case other people had a similar issue.
(I tried many suggested fixes that did not work, included reinstalling OS X on the target machine, running disk repair and fixing permissions on both source and target, changing file sharing on the source machine to include the whole drive, trying to migrate Applications and Documents & Data separately, turning off wifi before the transfer, etc.)

Thanks for posting this.  I was having the same problem.  You saved me hours, maybe days, of frustration!

  • [Solved] Atheros Wireless Fails after Update

After the update to kernel 3.6.37 the wireless on my Macbook pro is close to useless, but used to work very well before. Madwifi was upgraded as well but I suspect another problem.
Using WICD there is no wireless at all! With networkmanager the available networks are visible and sometimes logs on. However, the network fails quickly and starts asking for the password - most of the time it is useless typing in the password again. So the wireless is basically working but very unstable with networkmanager and non-existent anymore with WICD.
    Any ideas?

Found out more which might be significant for madwifi users:
According to the wiki I loaded the following modules in rc.conf: ath-hal, ath9k, wlan
Beside this one line in the modprobe.conf should be added: alias ath0 ath_pci. This way wicd as well as networkmanager used ath0 for connecting to wireless.
After the update I noticed that there is another wifi device in ifconfig listed: wlan0. So I suspected that 2 devices pointing at the same hardware may cause the instability, but de-activating one by ifconfig didn't help. Now I noticed by loading the modules one by one that the new ath9k is already defining wlan0 and the wireless starts working without loading the module wlan. It looks stable so far, but if I should be right I'm impossibly the only one having this trouble.
Confirmation would be nice, but I will mark this thread "solved" now.

  • Extended network often goes to zero

    Hi.
Surprisingly my extended network often goes to zero. I've a traditional wep encripted extended network using two airport extreme. When the network goes to zero I see the indicator on the upper right corner disappear anche the green light of the airport becomes flashing yellow. After 30 seconds the situation auto-fixes.
How can I solve the problem? I've just checked the main range, it works properly!.
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Regards.

try putting the second router in bridge mode, use Airport Utility manual button to do that. Choose the internet tab/connection sharing/bride mode
