Extended Network-Problem joining with Extreme

Hello,
I have been using my landlords wireless network from upstairs with no problems on my powerbook but now have got an airport extreme and want to extend the network in my apartment and connect the airport extreme to my printer and stereo.
When I use the airport setup assistant, to extend the network, it goes through all the steps, then, after saying "waiting for airport to reset", it says that "there is a problem joining the network, try using the airport menu". It then disconnects me from the network connection.
The network uses a 10 digit WEP 40/128-bit hex password which I can't change because it is set up in my landlord's apartment. I have a feeling this might be the problem, but don't know how to fix it. Any ideas greatly appreciated.
Peter

Unless your landlord uses an Airport Extreme Base Station, Airport Express, or one of a couple of non-Apple routers that support the creation of an "extended" network (like the Linksys WRT54G) your plan is simply not possible.
You could configure the Airport Express to simply "join" this wireless network. However, anyone else in the building connected to this wireless network would also have access to your printer, and the additional traffic from everyone else on the network might create problems with iTunes streaming to your Airport Express.

• Slightly different extend network problem

Hi gang,
Got my time capsule (1 TB) today. It was to replace one of my Airport Extreme basestations. My network was set up so that another Airport Extreme basestation was extending the range of the main station. The network is 5 GHz 802.11n only.
The time capsule is set to create a new network, and allow the network to be extended. When I go to configure my other Airport Extreme basestation and set it to extend a network, the drop down list has the name of every network in the area except for mine! Has anyone else been unable to get their network name to appear in the list of extendable network?
Cheers!

Type in the name of your network by hand (since it isn't in the pop up list); That worked for me.

• Problems joining AirPort Extreme network from 10.3

I need to bring an old iMac back into our family network. I erased the HD and installed 10.3. The airport card in the iMac sees our network and knows the password (I also reset the base station tonight so I know the password is correct and works with 2 laptops in the house.). However, each time I enter the password for the AirPort network, I get, "There was an error joining the selected AirPort network." Does this have anything to do with the type of password (WEP, etc?). When the iMac requests the password for joining the network, it simply requests, "Password."
Thanks!

If you temporarily set the security on your main router to "none", can the iMac connect that way?
If yes, what base station are you using?

• Network is created with extreme, devices dont see expresses

Hello everyone, i will try to explain my dilemma as clearly as possible.
Recently we recived the 2WIRE u-verse ATT router, which is terrible on giving a wireless signal.
So i decided to buy an airport extreme, and 2 expresses.
I disabled the wireless of the 2Wire router,
Then set up the network with the Extreme,
and placed the expresses in the room that has terrible signal.
(other rooms do not have any ethernet ports, but do have the phone line things on the walls)
The issue that i am having is those two other rooms.
The room with the Aiport Extreme is fantastic, and runs smoothly.
And yet my iPhone and iPads, cant receive a signal, the computer can but its so slow. And yet the Expresses are in those rooms.
The Expresses are set to extend the range, and the signal to the extreme is "excellent"
The ony information i could find to resolve this is to buy a powerline adapter, is that the only way?
If so/If not, how do they work?
I did every confiquration possible, very rarely the connection would be great, but dead again the next day.

Without knowing the exact layout of your home, it may be possible that both of the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Stations (AXn) may be just outside of the useful signal range coming from the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) to successfully extend it.
One way to find out, is to make Signal-to-Noise (SNR) measurements at the locations where the AXns are placed to see if the signal quality is sufficient enough.
SNR (in dB) = Signal (in dBm) - Noise (in dBm)
For example, a signal level of -53dBm measured near an access point and typical noise level of -90dBm yields a SNR of 37dB, a healthy value for wireless LANs.
SNR Guideline
40dB+ SNR = Excellent signal
25dB to 40dB SNR = Very good signal
15dB to 25dB SNR = Low signal
10dB to 15dB SNR = Very low signal
5dB to 10dB SNR = No signal
If you have a Mac laptop handy, I suggest downloading a copy of iStumbler. You will use iStumbler's Inspector feature (select Edit > Inspector from iStumbler's menu) to capture the Signal & Noise values. Be sure to power-off each AXn as you only want to measure the SNR of the AEBSn. Start with your laptop near the AEBSn, note the readings, and then, take the same measurements at each of the locations where the AXns are placed.
The SNR, as measured from the laptop, decreases as the range to the base station increases because of applicable free space loss. Also an increase in RF interference from microwave ovens and cordless phones, which increases the noise level, also decreases SNR.
If the SNR is 25dB+ at each of these locations, then you should be getting reasonable signal quality from the AEBSn at all of these locationst. If less, either try to locate the source of the Wi-Fi interference or try relocating either of the AXns until they are within a 25dB SNR range.
If, after relocating the AXns, you still do not get a high enough SNR, then you may want to consider employing Powerline adapters.

• Bridge or extend network using Apple TC & Extreme?

I have the following setup:
Uverse router (wifi off) -> Apple Time Capsule (creating wireless) -> Imac through ethernet
From the TC, there is a powerline adapter, which on the other end connects to a 4 port hub and other ethernet devices.
Accessing any of the devices at the end of the powerline kit is slow, as is transferring files to/from one end or another through the A/V kit.
Would I be better off Creating a wifi network on the uverse router, connecting that via ethernet to my Imac and to the powerline kit. Then on the other end of the powerline kit, have the TC set up in bridge mode with the same wifi information and just get rid of the 4 port USB hub?
Or, should I consider picking up an apple express to create the wireless network and connect my Imac, and move the TC in to place as an extender of the AE wifi network?
Would would give the best performance and ability to move files to/from the Imac and the devices that are on the end of the 4 port hub, besides running an ethernet cable (not an option) directly to them?

A media player, TV, A/V Receiver and PS3.
The Uverse router cannot be moved as it is connected to the only telephone outlet available.

• Extended Network bast station is extremely slow

I have an Airport Express base station that when connected transmits at speeds less that 10% of the Airport Extreme it is extending despite full signal.
I am getting around 4500kbps through the extreme and around 300kbps through the Express which is not enough to stream iCloud without rebuffering.
I have checked to make sure I am using WPA2 Personal and the "n" standard. What else should I consider?

"That does work, and I greatly appreciate the suggestion, but that is more of a work around than a fix."
Unitl Adobe fixes Acrobat I guess you'll have to use a work around.

• Update Problem - Join With Another Table

I'm trying to convert few MS Access Queries into Oracle. Following is one of the query from MS Access.

UPDATE [RESULT] INNER JOIN [MASTER]
ON ([RESULT].[LAST_NAME] = [MASTER].[LAST_NAME])
AND ([RESULT].[FIRST_NAME] = [MASTER].[FIRST_NAME])
AND ([RESULT].[DOCUMENT_NUMBER] = [MASTER].[DOCUMENT_NUMBER])
AND ([RESULT].[BATCH_ID] = [MASTER].[LEAD_ID])
SET [MASTER].[CLOSURE_REASON] = "Closed For Name and Document Number Match",
[MASTER].[RESULT_ID] = [RESULT].[ID],
[MASTER].[RESULT_PID] = [RESULT].[PID]
WHERE (([MASTER].[CLOSURE_REASON] Is Null)
AND ([MASTER].[REC_CODE] = "A1")
AND ([RESULT].[EVENT_DATE] = [MASTER].[EVENT_DATE])
AND ([RESULT].[EVENT_TYPE] = "Open")
AND ([MASTER].[DOCUMENT_NUMBER] Is Not Null)
AND ([MASTER].[DOCUMENT_NUMBER)] "null"));

First I received ORA-01779: cannot modify a column which maps to a non key-preserved table Error. I followed different examples (including MERGE) from your
site and modified my original query. Now, I receive ORA-30926: unable to get a stable set of rows in the source tables Error.
Most of the examples showed only one join between the tables but I have to make more joins based on my requirements.
Any help translating this query in to Oracle would be Great. Thanks!

Assuming that the columns you are joining to in the result table are the whole PK or are declared as aunique contraint (i.e. some combination of last_name, first_name, document_number, batch_id, event_date, id, and pid make up the entire PK/unique constraint), then the updateable join view should look something like:
update (select m.last_name, m.first_name, m.document_number, m.lead_id,
m.closure_reason, m.result_id, r.id, m.result_pid, r.pid
from master m
join result r
on r.last_name = m.last_name and
r.first_name = m.first_name and
r.document_number = m.document_number and
r.batch_id = m.lead_id and
r.event_date = m.event_date
where m.closure_reason is null and
m.rec_code = 'A1' and
r.event_type = 'Open' and
m.document_number is not null and
m.document_number != 'null')
set closure_reason = 'Closed For Name and Document Number Match',
result_id = id,
result_pid = pidThe merge version would look something like:
merge into master
using (select last_name, first_name, document_number, batch_id,
event_date, id, pid
from result
where event_type = 'Open') r
on (r.last_name = m.last_name and
r.first_name = m.first_name and
r.document_number = m.document_number and
r.batch_id = m.lead_id and
r.event_date = m.event_date)
when mathed then
update
set closure_reason = 'Closed For Name and Document Number Match',
result_id = id,
result_pid = pid
where m.closure_reason is null and
m.rec_code = 'A1' and
m.document_number is not null and
m.document_number != 'null';However, as Hoek pointed out, the combination of last_name, first_name, document_number, batch_id, event_date, id, and pid must point to a unique row in the result table, whether they make up the PK or a unique constraint. If there are, or could be, multiple rows for a particular combination of last_name, first_name, document_number, batch_id, event_date, id, and pid, then you will need to find a way to determine which of those rows should be used to do the update.

• Extended network often goes to zero

Hi.
Surprisingly my extended network often goes to zero. I've a traditional wep encripted extended network using two airport extreme. When the network goes to zero I see the indicator on the upper right corner disappear anche the green light of the airport becomes flashing yellow. After 30 seconds the situation auto-fixes.
How can I solve the problem? I've just checked the main range, it works properly!.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Regards.

try putting the second router in bridge mode, use Airport Utility manual button to do that. Choose the internet tab/connection sharing/bride mode

Are you trying to "extend" by connecting both AirPort Extremes together using an Ethernet cable...or.... are you trying to "extend" using wireless only?

• How do I know "Roaming Network" is working with Airport Express and Airport Extreme and should I use extended wireless network for third Express?

Attempting to eliminate a dead spot in Wifi coverage [and implement AirPlay] have one Airport Extreme 802.11n and two Airport Express 802.11n's.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4145
The Airport Extreme is of course connected to cable modem and Ethernet switch, and one Airport Express is connected to the Ethernet network. As per instructions for creating a "Roaming Network", Airport Express is set to same SSID, security type, and Password.
Questions:
1. How does the client device know which Airport to connect to? In other words, will it switch to the closer WiFi transmitter automatically? The WiFi reception problem is intermittent in the fringe areas so what I do not want it for it to stick with the more distant Airport Extreme in the basement when the Airport Express which is closer will work better.
2. How can I tell which of the Airports the attached client device is using?
The third Airport Express will be in a third location - I was planning on using it also for expanding coverage but after reading the warnings about performance suffering when purely using WiFi for the expansion in this location ("Wireless Extended Network" without an ethernet connection) I have figured that the single wired Airport Express will be adequate and will use the third Express to do Airplay only.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4259
Question: Can I use this second Airport Express to extend the wireless network via "Extended Wireless Network" while the other two are in "Roaming Netowrk" configuration? Without bogging down??
Mitch

1. How does the client device know which Airport to connect to?
The Mac computer will automatically connect to the wireless access point with the strongest signal...which is probably the closest AirPort. An iPhone or iPad may not do this and will tend to stay connected to one AirPort.
2. How can I tell which of the Airports the attached client device is using?
On a Mac, open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility. Click on one of AirPorts. In the area to the right, locate the AirPort ID and jot that down. Then do the same for your other AirPort.
Move your Mac near one of the AirPorts and log on to the wireless. Hold down the option key on the Mac while you click the fan shaped AirPort icon at the top of the screen. Look for the BSSID. That is the AirPort ID of the device to which you are connected.
If you are close to the "remote" AirPort, and you see the AIrPort ID of the "main" router when you are testing, then you know that the network is not configured correctly.
Can I use this second Airport Express to extend the wireless network via "Extended Wireless Network" while the other two are in "Roaming Netowrk" configuration? Without bogging down??
There will be a modest 10-15% bandwidth loss with the "extend" setup, assuming that the Express is located where it can receive a strong wireless signal from the AirPort to which it is associated. You can avoid the bandwidth loss if the Express is also connected via Ethernet as part of the roaming configuration.

• Creating or extending a wireless network with Extreme + Express?

The range of my wireless internet at home is fairly poor using my Thomson TG784 wi-fi router. I have an Airport Extreme (802.11) and an Airport Express (both from 2007) that I want to use to extend its range. Using AirPort Utility to configure the Airport Extreme first, which of the following options do I want to select to set it up to do so:
1) "Create a wireless network";
2) "Connect to a network using Ethernet to extend the network or create a second network";
3) "Join a wireless network";
4) "Disable wireless and connect to a computer or network using Ethernet"
If I connect the Extreme to my router, is it a problem if that router continues to transmit wirelessly simultaneously, or should it be configured not to transmit (if possible)? In other words, will the Extreme replace the wi-fi transmission of my router or will it extend it?
Once the Extreme is set up, do I configure my Airport Express to 3) Join a wireless network?
Thanks for any advice you can provide!

You will need to connect the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) via Ethernet to your Thomson. Neither the AEBS nor the AirPort Express (AX) will wirelessly extend a network created by a Thomson device.
You could use either option 1 or 2.
Option 3 won't work for the AEBS since a non-Apple device is creating the wireless network.
Option 4 does not make much sense for an AEBS. It does make sense for a Time Capsule.
You basically want the AEBS to be configured to create a wireless network and as a bridge (not sharing a single IP address).
If I connect the Extreme to my router, is it a problem if that router continues to transmit wirelessly simultaneously, or should it be configured not to transmit (if possible)?
If you disable the router's wireless then you wouldn't be using the AEBS to extend the wireless network. You would simply be using the AEBS to create a wireless network.
Once the Extreme is set up, do I configure my Airport Express to 3) Join a wireless network?
You can. In that mode the AX will simply be another wireless client on your network. You can stream music to the AX or print to a USB printer connected to the AX.

I now wish to add a second Airport extreme but am considering a hard wire connection with 100 ft of cat 6 cable from the Time capsule to the second Airport extreme.
Excellent plan.
Can my network operate properly to extend the network with both a wireless and wired extend functionallity?
Yes, but don't get confused about the second AirPort Extreme, as it would not be configured to "extend" a wireless network.....it would be configured to "create a wireless network" using the same wireless network name, security settings and password as the Time Capsule network. Configure the second Extreme in Bridge Mode.
This Apple support document will show you how to hookup and configure the second AirPort Extreme:

• Problems with win vista and an AX to AX extended network

Hi, I'm wondering if someone can help me out with a problem I'm having. I have a house with several floors and had patchy coverage from the Airport Express unit serving as a base station, at least down in the basement where my desktop is located. I decided to put a 2nd Airport Express unit halfway between, and choose to extend the network (using the Extend a Wireless Network option from the dropdown box, rather than WDS). For some reason, my pc won't connect properly to the 2nd AX, I get an IP address assigned, but can't ping anything. When I check the log, I see these entries for the mac address of the desktop:
Apr 25 14:18:18 5 Associated with station 00:1c:10:e4:05:7c
Apr 25 14:18:22 5 Deauthenticating with station 00:1c:10:e4:05:7c (reserved 2).
Apr 25 14:18:22 5 Disassociated with station 00:1c:10:e4:05:7c
Curiously, I have a laptop that works just fine, and I can confirm that it's connected to the extending station using the AirPort utility by seeing the wireless clients attached.
On several occasions I have managed to get the desktop to the base upstairs (in spite of the patchy reception) and reception permitting, it works ok. Very strange!
Other info:
my setup is adsl+ > thomson modem/router (from the isp, O2) > airport express base station (via ethernet cable) > airport express extending station
the desktop uses a linksys wireless g pci adapter, latest driver downloaded
the laptop is a sony vaio running vista business, the desktop vista ultimate
I am using WPA/WPA2 PERSONAL with AES encryption.
I have an integrated modem / router from my ISP that acts as a dhcp server and is connected to the AX base station via an ethernet cable.
My iphone also connects to the AX extending station
The AX base station is broadcasting 802.11n (b/g compatible mode)
Am I stretching the windows compatibility with this setup?

Sounds like it should work to me. I run the following for a network: AExt Dual Band on 2.4 & % Ghz, AExp as extender on 2.4 Ghz, AExp on 5 Ghz as extender, an HP Notebook with Vista 32 connects on 2.4 Ghz, Older IBM Notebook runs XP connects on 2.4 GHz, a new DELL Intel Quad running Vista 64 connects on 5 Ghz. It all works without problems.
I did have some connecting issues when I was using Norton 360 release 2.something. I upgraded to version 3, free with active subscription, and all issues have seemed to go away. Release 3 seems to be much more Apple aware.
Would encourage you to call Apple Support. When I called, I found them to be pretty knowledgeable and they actually speak US English as their native language.
Another tip, if you go to "Network & Sharing Center", you can see signal strength. I found this useful to tell where a particular system was connecting.
Hope this helps, Good Luck!

• Help! Im trying to extend the network on my Airport Extreme with an Express

This is probably such a begginers question but it has truely boggled my mind for the last 24 Hours!
I have brought an airport express to extend my airport extreme network. My Airport extreme is the base and is hooked up to my initial Home model from my ISP which works fine.
I have been trying to connect my airport express and am having no luck. I have plugged the airport in but am having no luck locating it on my airport utility (only my actual Airport Extreme shows)
Can someone please help me Ive been here for hours reading on forums trying to sort this out and Im gettin nowhere fast!
The light on the express is flashing orange. I have tried to reset it but there still is nothing showing.
any ideal on what i could do or follow step by step?

Ok, the question is how can i extend the range with
my airport extreme base,
With an Airport Express or another Airport Extreme
I have A netgear WNP802, it
has a repeating feature.
Which won't work with your Airport Extreme
< But i am wanting to have the
netgear and the apple airport extreme talk to each
other so that i can put the net gear in a seperate
room to extend the range of signal.

This is not possible.
How can i do this?
You can't.
Netgear and Apple use different chips which means they won't and can't talk to each other when it comes to extending networks.

• TS1398 I cannot join with a nearby Wi-Fi network. We have wi-fi in our apt. and our IBM laptop is connecting with no problem; but, when I try to use my iPod touch, the wi-fi is locked and asks for a password. I do not know it.

How do I join with the network that is in our apt? The iPod asks for a password and I do not have one. What to do?

You have to enter the correct password to connect.
Ask the person who setup the router for the password.
