Extended view display for 2 monitors

I have set up a second monitor and I want to be able to have two files on the separate screens. I am not able to drag any application, file or mouse to the second screen. I am in extended display. Unsure as to what is blocking it and how to efficiently
be able to use both screens... Help !!!

Please try the methods mentioned in the following thread:

Hope that helps.

  • How can i use my old iMac as a extended desktop display for my new iMac?

I recently purchased a 21.5 in iMac and wanted to use my old iMac as a extended desktop. My new iMac has thunderbolt and USB 3.0 connections while my old iMac has firewire (400 and 800), USB 2.0 and mini-DVI. Is this posible?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
If your iMac has got Mini-DVI, you have a 17, 20 or 24-inch iMac that doesn't support Target Display. Late 2009 and Mid 2010 27-inch iMacs, and iMacs with Thunderbolt can be used as external displays. Read > http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11302?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
If your old iMac doesn't support Target Display mode, you can use ScreenRecycler to use your old iMac as an extended display for the new iMac. The only thing you need is that both Macs are connected to the same network

  • LCD display for Hardware Monitor?

    Hardware Monitor...
    http://www.bresink.com/osx/HardwareMonitor.html
...supports certain external, USB-based LCD displays for providing system status. Is anyone using one?
Can anyone recommend a nice, already-assembled unit to set on the desk here? Thanks.
    blakespot

Sadly none of the above unit will work w/ Hardware Monitor.
I just received this email from the author after inquiring about the above displays compatibility w/ Hardware Monitor:
Unfortunately, these vendors are completely unknown in Europe and
they only offer drivers for Windows, so no support for these modules
    is possible so far.
If not, is there a ready-made, external (already in a little
    enclosure) unit that does?
No, I am currently not aware of any ready-made units. Unfortunately
the market for these devices seems to be so small that no worldwide
vendor has established an industry standard yet, or could provide
an open software layer for Mac OS X. When such a solution exists, we
will immediately support it in Hardware Monitor.
For more information about LCD unit support please see the chapter
"Controlling external alphanumeric displays" in the reference manual
    of Hardware Monitor.

  • Changing iBook display for external monitor

does anyone know how to change the screen resolution past 1024x768 on an iBook G4 12 inch? I'd like to set it at 1280x1064 on my 19 inch monitor, but its not an option in the displays preference page. Does anyone know a way around this?

There are a few ways the display resolutions and/or settings can be
changed; you can use custom controls offered by some applications
and there also are unsupported "hacks" that can add features or
resolutions not originally intended by Apple for certain models.
So, since some choices (if failure results) may void your warranty,
some people are reluctant to use an unsupported feature hack.
That said, one of the better sites with a product that seems to be
well crafted (which I have not tried) is SwitchRes X
Another less polished and maybe more on the edge (?) is one that
adds the ability to expand the desktop between two displays and
not just mirror; such as the PowerBook supports. That may work,
or it may not. Some hacks may be bad on the video card.
    Extended Desktop
With the second display attached to the iBook, you may be able
to use one of these utilities listed to add features and resolutions.

  • How do i get the slideshow to display on my external monitor in extended view with powerpoint?

i have my T500 (windows 7) connected to a large external monitor with extended view.  when i run powerpoint it displays the slideshow on my laptap screen instead of the external view.  how can i have the presenter view show on my laptop, and the slideshow show on the external monitor/projector?
    thanks!

You can do it that way, (Clone) but everything you do on your laptop will also be displayed on the monitor.
Assuming you would like the display on the external and freedom to navigate on your laptop without broadcasting, you would need to adjust your slide show settings in PowerPoint.
    To use this procedure:
In PowerPoint, On the Slide Show menu, click Set Up Show.
Under Multiple monitors > Display slide show on drop down menu:   select the monitor you want the slide show to appear on.

  • All Things Being Equal, Is the Apple Display The Best Monitor For A Mac

Let's put price aside for a second....
Is the Apple Display the best monitor to hookup to a MacBook Pro (or any Mac for that matter) because the Apple Display is specifically configured for Macs where other monitors are probably more configured for PCs/Windows? In other words are Apple Displays the best out of the box for your Mac (minimal configuration, maximum clarity and crispness, etc.).
    Thanks.

It's a very good sRGB monitor. The 30 is outstanding. I still think the 23 is a little sketchy; it seems prone to an issue where for as much as an hour you can just discern a ghost of a window that has been up for a few hours; and there are still sporadic reports of weird color casts and "sparkling" effects that can make it difficult to focus on fine details when you're working. The 20 is very good unless you're in a bright environment, in which case you might find its backlight does not go up enough. The 20 has a certain rarity value right now; it's about the last really good wide-format monitor in its size class, though there are still plenty of good 20 or 21 inch 1600x1200 displays out there.
Bear in mind that because OS X (including, most importantly, Safari) still thinks everything is sRGB, if you get an extended gamut AdobeRGB monitor like the latest 90-series 26 incher from NEC, all the colors in iApps like iPhoto and Safari will come out looking Day-Glo.
The very best monitors out there -- and here we're talking 24-inch monitors that cost $1,200 and up once you consider tax and/or shipping -- will tend to have things like a polarizing filter on the display itself, HDCP support, dual or even triple computer inputs, and 10 or 12 bit color support that enables profiling within the monitor independently of the graphics card on your computer. Of the above features Apple is particularly overdue on implementing HDCP, which Hollywood in its stupidity has made a requirement for HD movies (why they want to enrich monitor manufacturers rather than themselves I don't know), and the polarizing filter thingy, which further improves the blacks and the viewing angle on IPS panels such as the ones Apple uses in its displays.
Every now and then a cheaper one comes along -- DoubleSight's latest 25.5 inch ("26 inch" in name only) display comes to mind -- that fulfills all those attractive specifications but usually has some deficiency or other. The most common aggravating feature of cheaper displays, and this has shown up in forums on the DoubleSight display, is you can't turn the brightness control down far enough for domestic use without resorting to hardware calibration and/or pulling back on the individual RGB sliders, which makes color accuracy a problem. But for a brightly lit office environment, and if you're OK dealing with the (hopefully temporary) OS X issues with wide gamut, the DoubleSight is an attractive HD option.
Now will someone help me decide which of the ACD 20 or 23 causes less eye strain when dealing with text? Thanks in advance.

  • What Color Space to choose for viewing jpegs on a monitor

After reading many webpages and watching many tutorial videos about which color space to use, I get odd results.  I understand that sRGB is more for web applications, and that Adobe RGB 1998 has a wider gamut, and that ProPhoto has the widest gamut of colors, particularly helpful with printing.
However, in LR 4, when I export to jpeg as sRGB, Adobe RGB, and ProPhoto, the differences are very noticeable.  sRGB looks the most vibrant, Adobe RGB looks flat, and ProPhoto looks dark with a greenish cast.  I expected ProPhoto to look best, or is that only for printing, and I have to process differently?
What am I misunderstanding here?  TIA.

    It depends on three factors:
    1. The monitor - normal, which means with a gamut close to sRGB, or "wide gamut" with a gamut that approaches Adobe RGB (and today there are plenty of medium priced "wide gamut" monitors).
    2. The viewing application and whether it is color managed. In a nutshell, color management translates the image color numbers to eqivalent color numbers in the monitor's color space.
    3. Whether the monitor is calibrated and profiled. In order for color management to work properly the application must know what the image's color space is (embedded profile) and what the monitor's space is (monitor profile). Any display on the monitor is always in the monitor space, but in order for the display to be accurate the translation must be made.
If all three conditions are fulfilled, alll images, no matter what their spaces are, will be displayed more or less the same because they have all been translated to the same display space. I say "more or less" because if the image is in a wide space that needs to be compressed to fit in the monitor space, there may be slight differences in the way colors that are out-of-gamut for the monitor are rendered, but the differences are slight.
Without those three factors, only images in the space closest to your monitor's native space will be properly displayed. So if you have a "normal" monitor, choose sRGB and if you have a "wide gamut" monitor, go with Adobe RGB, but keep in mind that other people with "normal" monitors and without color managed browsers/viewers will not see it properly.

  • Display disappearing in viewer and in ext monitor

I am at my second project using Color, so I'm pretty new to it.
The first time it worked out fine.
This time I am encountering a strange problem.
I send the project from FCP, it takes me a couple of times to get it to open in Color, but I finally make it.
Once in Color I start grading my shots. As soon as I drag a grade from one shot to another though, the displays disappear, either my external display than the one in the viewer on my computer monitors, and there's nothing I can do to get it back. I have to resend the project back from FCP, just to have the same problem occur.
Anybody has any idea why it's doing that?
    Thanks

Nope. We aren't looking over your shoulder so how can we tell based upon the information you've not given?
It would nice to know what video format you're working with. It would be nice to know if you've followed the stringent rules for prepping your sequences for Color. It would be nice to know your equipment software/hardware infrastructure.
But to throw a guess out there, since you're using a G5, I'm guessing your video card is substandard and not liking what you're using for video.

  • What are Sys Prefs for View desktop on TV monitor

I have the cable connected to the computer and a flat screed TV.
i get the startup display on the monitor, the mouse tracks and the screen saver works but the screen saver pictures are not the same.
I cannot get the computer desktop on the TV monitor so that I can use the computer super drive as a DVD player to watch a movie.
Is there a specific setup fot the system preferences?

I am assuming you have a mini-displayport/thunderbolt to HDMI adapter and of course a HDMI cable.
Set the TV to the input you connected the HDMI cable to.
On your computer, if you open the Displays preferences and do not see an Arrangement tab (or there is an Arrangement tab that shows only a single monitor) then there is something physically wrong with your connection.  Try clicking Detect Displays just to see if the computer can now sense the presence of the connection. Check your cables and make sure the mini-displayport plug is pushed firmly in so that essentially all the metal part disappears inside the socket.  Mini-displayport plugs can be a little tricky in that you need to make sure the plug is fully seated in their socket.
If you do have an Arrangement tab, and it shows two screens, then click Gather Windows to bring the TV's Displays preferences on to your main screen if the TV is not yet showing an image.  Set the proper resolution (probably 720p, 1080i, or 1080p).  Set the refresh rate (probably 60Hz) if that preference is shown.  You should see a picture at this point.  I  recommend turning off mirrored displays if it is enabled (more about this below).
You may have to play with the underscan/overscan settings on your TV and the displays prefs for the TV if the picture is too small or larger for the TV screen.
Also, you need to set your Sound preferences to output to the HDMI connection.  If the MBP doesn't support audio through the mini-displayport then you will need to connect your stereo audio out to your TV (3.5 mm  stereo jack for the compter to usually RCA jacks on the TV).
Arrangements, Menu Bar, Extended Displays, and Mirrored Displays
When you have multiple monitors (and the TV is considered just a monitor) only one monitor is designated as the "main" monitor.  That's the one with the menu bar.
If you look at the Arrangement tab in your Displays preferences you will see both monitors.  One will have a little white "menu bar" on it.  That's your main monitor.  You can drag the little menu bar to the other monitor if you wish to make it the main monitor.
You cannot make both monitors main monitors.  However there is a third party app called MenuEverywhere that allows you to do that (it has mixed reviews).
Your two monitors can be spatially arranged with the Arrangement in Displays as well.  Drag the monitors around each other to define their relationship.  Then you can drag the mouse or windows across with in that "space".  This is extended desktop mode and I recommend that to be able to use all the available screen real estate.  However there is a checkbox in the Arrangement to run in mirrored mode.  Now the two images are identical on both screens albeit the max screen size is determined by the smallest screen in the mirrored set.  You would of course have the menu bar on both screens since they are mirrors of each other.  But I think it's a waste of good screen real estate.

  • PSE 7 - Set Up for 2 monitors.....display is really messed up.

I have a Dell laptop with a 2nd monitor plugged into it.  In, I think, full screen mode the PSE 7 editor page is properly displayed on the laptop.  If I click the center box in upper right to reduce page size for drag and drop, it narrows vertically to about ¾ of screen height, but extends across about ¾ of both monitors.  Any image I try to edit lands right in the middle, split between both.  Trying to adjust size by grabbing a side of the page has no effect - no arrows appear, tho' I can drag the whole page back and forth between monitors to some extent.
If I click on the reduce/full size box in center at upper right when the page is partly onto the 2nd monitor, the full screen page will be offset on that monitor to where the bottom is about an inch above the bottom, the boxes at upper right are out of the screen and un-usable, and the whole thing is ¾ out of the screen to the left.  The only way I've found to get back to anything useable is to right click the icon in the bottom taskbar of laptop screen, then left click "Restore."  This brings it back to the original full screen on the laptop.
Laptop is 15", 2nd monitor is 23".  I'd really prefer to edit photos on the 2nd.  I've never seen or heard of anything like this and see nothing in the Help menu.  Does anyone have any ideas on how to get a normal display ??
    Thanks
    Lar.

OK, great, I've now got FCP back! Thank you.
However, I am where I originally was. My system has been set up and fully functional with my 2 monitors for about a year now, but I have never used FCP on this 2 monitor system. There must be a setting unique to FCP that tells it there are two monitors. When I go to Window-Arrange-Dual Screen absolutely nothing happens. I can drag each of my FÇP windows to the 2nd monitor, and save as a cutom layout, which is what I think I will do. Just wondering why the Arrange-dual screen does not work, and does not appear in the user manual. Running FCP 5.1.2 if that means anything.

  • HP LP2065- Need to connect 2 together for extended view

    Hi,
I'd like to connect 2 HP LP2065 monitors together for extended viewing. ( Dragging files from one screen to another, not mirroring ). Can this be done without a Dual Monitor KVM switch? Thanks for any feedback or help in advance.
    Note:
I currently run 1 HP LP2065 monitor with 2-3 laptops using a 4 port single monitor KVM switch. This set up works fine for one monitor. Online forums suggest getting a Dual Monitor KVM switch to run 2 monitors. But those switches cost $225 plus. And I can score another used HP LP2065 for less than $75

My first thought would be to add the Radeon 2600, it does work in 2007 models running Leopard. And the cost is acceptable.
As long as the X1900 is fine, no need to swap out for the newer 3870 just yet.

  • Display for a SUNFire V880 flickers with a VGA monitor

    Hi,
I have a SunFire V880 which has been connected to a rack-mounted HP VGA monitor via an Avocent KVM for some years now.
Recently, I found the display for server flickers non-stop, making it impossible to view.
I have tried connecting it to other VGA monitors with the same results.
Only when I connect it to a SUN monitor, did it display just fine.
Could anyone advice on how I can get it to display on a VGA monitor again?
    Many Thanks!

    Ok, I'll bite ...
You provided no useful information as to the actual configuration,
It would have helped to mention whether the monitor was in the same rack as the V880.
(that would inform us as to length of cabling)
It would have helped to note which frame buffer was in the computer.
(that informs us of its capabilities)
It would have helped to describe the current video settings.
    but ...
Does the original display work if you eliminate the KVM from the lash-up
and directly attach the screen to the V880?
If yes, then the KVM is the root cause.
If no, then find the refresh rate settings of the current output signal
and change them to be compatible to whatever those non-Sun monitors need.

Unfortunately, that is not possible. The computer only can "output" your display image, it cannot "input" an image from an external computer and display it on your MacBook's retina display.

  • How to physically hook up for extended dual display

This was originally posted in another wrong topic section today, which was incorrect.
I have a flat panal PC (windows XP) as well as my iMac G5. I would like to hookup the iMac to the PC so that I can extend my PC Desktop onto the iMac. I have a Apple Video Adapter if that is of any help. If this is possible, what would be the physical hookup for this type of arrangement? Once that is done, I think I can get the displays working through the Display/Settings on the PC.
    Thanks

You can do the reverse, using ScreenRecycler mentioned above. That is, using the Windows PC as a second display for the iMac. It has some limitations, because you are using the network connection for the video. However, I do not know of any such program that works in the other direction.
The video port on the iMac is for output only. The only other way to get video into the iMac is using some type of USB interface device, but those are usually designed for capturing video, so it would probably be unsatisfactory, and for the cost of such as device, you could probably buy a low-end LCD display and have a real second screen connected using a real video port.

  • Can you merge monitors for a single display for video playback?

I use a projector for a monitor and it's 720p(1080x768) I'd like to add another identical one to up it to 2160x768. Will the os(or at least in part the applications such as itunes, imovie, dvd player and videos played in safari)play across both as one desktop or am I still going to be trapped to 1 display showing the video? I have a mac mini 2010 so mini diplay port and HDMI.
    is this possible?
