Extending 27" Cinema Display A Great Distance

Hey all,
I have purchased 2 cinema displays and I have my computer located about 100 feet away in a separate machine room. Normally i would buy a KVM extender to extend the display over Cat6. However since the LED cinema displays i have only have a Mini Dv Male as the only means of connection I've hit a bit of a road block. Can any one help or can any one point me to a female mini Dv adapter  or extender that is compatible with these Mac displays? Thanks!

Sorry,
Should have been more clear. I meant Mini- Display Port not dv. I have a 27" Cinema Display. I am comming out of my mac pro via DVI to a Gefen KVM extender. So Essentially I have a DVI Output from my computer and the only way to hook up my particular Cinema Display is via the Mini DisplayPort. SO i need a Female Mini-Display Port  to DVI-D Male but i have yet to find anything.

  • 24" Cinema Display Compatibility with New MBPs

Need advice: Considering a new 13" 2.53GHsz MBP and a 24" Cinema display -- laptop for travel, display for desk. Like the portability of the 13". Or do I need upgrade to the 15" 2.66Ghz MBP with enhanced graphics and video support? Not a gamer, but would enjoy the display for movies, etc. Thanks in advance.

Update: Apple store sales advised me to buy 15" MBP (vs. new 13") due to concerns re: graphics and speed. So I purchased the 2.8Ghz. Set up with cinema display works great. Done.

  • 23" Cinema Display: Can't disable MacBook display to use only the cinema?

    Hi,
I just bought a 23" cinema display with the intention of using it exclusively while I use a wireless keyboard and just keep my MacBook closed. I notice that when I set the display preferences to "mirror," the quality of the cinema display reduces greatly, since it's only able to be set at the maximum display resolution allowed for the MacBook when mirroring. This seems to defeat the purpose of having the cinema display. So, I guess I have several questions:
    1. Can I close the MacBook without it going to sleep?
    2. Can I make the cinema display the primary display (with application menus, etc.)?
    3. Can I disable the MaBook display and use only the cinema display?
    Thanks,
    Stew

    1. Can I close the MacBook without it going to sleep?
No, but if the power adapter is connected, you can wake it with the external keyboard or mouse (make sure wake-up is enabled in the Bluetooth system preference), and it will continue to run with the lid closed.
    2. Can I make the cinema display the primary display (with application menus, etc.)?
Yes. In the "Arrangement" pane of "Displays" system preference, turn off mirroring and drag the picture of the menu bar to the picture f the external display.
    3. Can I disable the MaBook display and use only the cinema display?
    Yes. Close the lid.

  • IBM T23 and Apple Cinema Displays??

I have just purchased an Apple 23" Cinema Display for my 4 computers. I have a DVI switcher as well. I have 2 Desktop PCs, a PowerMac G5 and a T23 laptop (for work). My cinema display works great on the 3 other computers because they all support DVI. I have the port replicator for my T23 and thought it would support DVI based on the connector on the back. Problem is, it doesn't. (Found this out after reading alot online).
To make a long story longer, I cannot use remote desktop on my T23 because I use a VPN to connect to work all day and that negates RDP from one of my other computers.
I have tried a passive VGA to DVI adapter, but the Cinema Display will not see the signal. I am sure it is not powerful enough, or in the right clocking speed...or that it is not digital.
I was wondering if anyone else with a T23 has had any success with this type scenario. I am trying to not have to buy a $299 powered VGA to DVI adapter.
Any info would greatly be appreciated!!!
    Thanks,
    Doug

If you have a 8th inch to RCA(the three red, white, and yellow prongs) adapter. Then yes.
Other than that, apple sells a cable that you can plug into your iPod that will allow you to plug the iPod in to a TV(or anything with RCA in).

I think that is what you are looking for.
Just joking. I didnt see that you wanted to use it with the cinema display thing.
I dont have that, so I really dont know. Sorry. It was worth the try.

  • Extending Ddsplay image onto 2 x 20inch Cinema Displays.

    Hi,
I have two 20inch Cinema Displays, and a 15inch G4 Laptop. Is there a device available that would allow me to extend my desktop onto both monitors (not as a mirror of my desktop, but as a true extension).
    Example: Display (1) = Safari
    Display (2) = iPhoto
I hope I am communicating my question clearly. In a nutshell, one monitor would be used for one application, and the other running whatever else. In this config, my mouse would "float" from 1 display to the other, as if both displays were joined together, seamlessly.

If your laptop has a CardBus slot you can use it with a VTBook
<http://www.villagetronic.com/vtbook/index.html> for a second external display. The other display uses the laptop's DVI port.

  • Ideal viewing distance to a 30 inch Cinema display

    Hey
What is the ideal distance to sit and view the 30 inch cinema display to work on lLife and Apple's Pro apps?
    Philip

Is there some science to this? Are there some recommended distances when you take into account the size of the display and the Dpi?

  • Extended displays MacBookPro to Cinema Display

I have a mid 2012 Mac Book Pro and a cinema display. Have the right connector between them but cannot get the CD display at its best high resolution - at BEST FOR DISPLAY it uses lo-res 1280x800 and same on SCALED.
    Help?

Have the right connector between them
    Probably not.
You need an ACTIVE Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI to get resolutions over 1920 wide. Apple sells their adapter cable for US$100.

  • FCP7 2 apple cinema displays & 1 sony HDTV issues

Hello, I am having issues with connecting my 3rd montior which is a SONY HDTV.  I am able to connect all 3 montiors and they all work fine as far as the workspace goes, but one thing I was used to when editing using a SONY DSR-11 was having the 3rd montior, in this case the Sony monitor, as the video ouput monitor, you know, to be able to see what I was editing rather than what I do now wich is drag the canvas window to the SONY monitor and enlarging it.  It's kind of annoying to be honest.  Anyway, anyone out there experience the same issue?  I have an ATI Readeon 5770 card which has the two mini dislay ports for the 2 apple cinema displays and the DVI to HDMI port on the card.  Also, I am able to view the cut on one of the apple cinema displays (i don't want this as i want it on the SONY display) when i hit view>external video>all frames and then for video playback the only options I getr is the apple displays AND its the wrong aspect ratio when i play it but when i pause, it goes back to the aspect ratio i shot it in.   ANY help would be greatly appreciated!

    Turn OFF [√] Mirror Displays
Then you get something like this:
The screens are connected along an edge of your choosing to make one large "Extended desktop". For your sanity, you arrange then in the same way (by dragging the blue boxes that represnt each display) to the same order they are in on your bench.
The mouse moves freely across the divide between screens, and it can carry a window with it. The little white bar is the menuBar, and it can be moved as well.
If you move a window onto another screen, it can be re-sized to fill almost the entire screen. If you split a window across displays, it scrolls and updates "the right way".

  • What connector is on the Apple 20" Cinema Display, DVI-I or DVI-D?

Sorry if this is a noob question, i just have never bothered to clarify this fact before. I have an Apple 20in Cinema display. Is the DVI connector on it a DVI-I or DVI-D type. I'm not sure what the difference is but there is obviously one so i figured i'd ask.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi 30inch-
    Welcome to Discussions!
To extend the cable on the ACD, a cable such as that which Gefen offers will serve the purpose. At issue with the 30", is the dual link requirement. As well, with all ACD's, the USB connection is important. The firewire is for convenience, more than anything, but is included in the cable set from Gefen.
The booster that is included, is important to keep signal strength, and maintain picture clarity over the distance of the cable.
With distances of less than 10', one might get by with a quality dual link DVI-D (or DVI-I) connected cable, though the issue of signal strength may be a performance limiting factor. The picture quality and monitor performance from a passive (non-boosted) cable, will be determined by the strength, or weakness of the graphics card.

  • Mid-2012 MBP with 27" Cinema Display SCREEN GOES BLACK WHEN USING USB PERIPHERALS IN DOCK

I haven't been able to find any straightforward answer as to why this is happening and it's becoming one of the most infuriating things in my life, impeding my workflow and costing me unmeasurable time in waiting, rebooting, screwing with cables, etc.
I use my MBP as a DAW for multitracking live audio events to ProTools through a digital console where I work. Here's my gear list that I use every day:
    Mid-2012 MBP - Yosemite, 8GB, i7 quad 2.5, mechanical hd
HengeDocks dock for my exact model machine - has set-screw jacks for CinemaDisplay power, Tbolt, FW800, USB, USB, SDcard, headphones, etc
    USB wired keyboard
Anker 1x4 USB3.0 hub - I have a TimeMachine 1TB drive, 3TB project backup drive, audio interface and MIDI I/O or PT iLok, depending what I'm working on
    Magic Mouse (BlueTooth)
    Here's what's happening:
SCENARIO 1 - I insert the CinemaDisplay (cD) power connector and TBolt plugs into the dock, tighten the set screws, close the lid of my MBP (already logged into Yosemite & linked with MagicMouse [mM]) and stick the MBP into the dock... everything comes up on the cD and I can go about my day. At this point, I can plug the USB hub into the back of the cD and the system sees the hub & all peripherals listed just fine.
SCENARIO 2 - Install cD powercon, TBolt connector, USB3 hub, USB keyboard into the dock, close the lid on MBP (again, logged in), insert into dock... cD comes up, looks great for about 15 seconds then goes completely blank. No response from key presses, mouse clicks, threats with a hammer, etc. Then, of course, I have to yank the MBP out of the dock, which hard-disconnects the external drives (backup and TimeMachine... good for them, right?) and causes the MBP to flake, thinking it's still in the dock, then not, then logging me out & requiring a password (not a big deal- I deal with copyrighted stuff, so passwords aren't the issue).
***EVEN IF I DO NOT PLUG THE USB3 HUB INTO THE HENGE DOCK, THE cD STILL GOES BLANK AFTER 15 SEC... IT ONLY SEEMS TO LIKE THE TBOLT AND POWER... NO OTHER PERIPHERALS (fw800, USB, etc)***
It seems like the MBP freaks out when the lid is closed and there are USB/FW peripherals plugged in while using a secondary TBolt display as the main output... seems stupid... if I need a closed-lid dock, the MBP shouldn't care what I have plugged in while the lid is closed. I had the same issues with Mountain Lion & Mavericks and now it's being repeated with Yosemite.
My goal in this exercise is simply to free up the USB jacks on the back of the cD for two reasons - #1) from time to time, I have extra things to plug in and I don't want some massive USB 1x8 hub on my desk... looks stupid; #2) the bottleneck created by plugging in the hub to the back of the cD (another hub via TBolt) almost triples the time required to back up/copy files. I move files from system drive to backup drive & back VERY often due to the nature of my job... speeding up this process would greatly improve my efficiency in the matter. Why would Henge create a dock with all the jacks on it to allow someone to plug into a cD that won't frickin work with said cD? Every other dock I've found makes the user stick the MBP on a slanted, goofy-looking stand and have the lid open or something dumb like that... what I have is the setup I need... just need the USB stuff to work while lid is closed and everything from powercon & cD to USB3 hubs will work without making the cD freak out.
    Any ideas out there?

Have now taken the 27" display into the repair shop and after 24 hrs got the phone call - "appears to be nothing wrong with it, will check again on Tuesday and let you know".
I can't seem to find anything on the net describing a similar problem. Everything is working fine right now with the Mac Pro connected to the older 20 inch Cinema Display. In fact, everything seems to be working about a second faster.
I was told by the local retailer that Apple no longer makes the 27 inch LED Cinema Display product and the new display, the "Thunderbolt" will not work with my 13 month old Mac Pro.
***??? In 20 years of owning Mac equipment, this is my first major "uh-oh".

  • Cinema display 24" burned and died

I wonder if anyone can give me any advice. I bought the £650 24" Apple Cinema Display 18 months ago from the Apple Store. On Friday I got a burning smell and it died.
Took it into the Apple store on Monday. They said it is out of warranty and that they could repair it for £500 - LCD fail.
Does anyone know if I have any consumer rights with this? Surely I should expect a £650 monitor to last longer than 18 months? At the time of purchase they didn't even offer me an extended apple care warranty.
Apple products usually have such long lives. I have an 8 year old ipod and 4 year old MBP and they are both still going strong!

Update: This may be useful for anyone else who has had the same issue.
Took my display to an independent but Apple Authorised repair centre where I had them run a diagnostic test on it. Turns out it was the logic board which had burnt out which they said was a manufacturing fault.
So the £500 repair quoted by the Genius Bar actually turned out to be £80.
I also had this repair done free of charge as I used my my consumer rights - the Sales of Goods Act 1979. This applies to the UK only and should cover you for up to 6 years.
It also states on the Apple warranty page that in the EU they cover items for 2 years if it's proved to be a manufacturing fault.
Thanks Apple, my cinema display is now back on my desk
Hope this post may help someone else in the same predicament!

  • Cinema display won't turn on

So my cinema display will not turn back on if I have it on, remove the cord from computer then try to put the cord back in. However if I put the usb back in and put my mouse in the cinema usb port the mouse still works. I restarted my computer and the display turned back on but I am afraid of ever taking the cord out again. My main computer is a MacBook Pro.

I have an early 2011 MBP and a 27 inch Cinema Display. Sounds like I am having the same issue. So far, no solution.
If I unplug the MiniDisplay port cord (All Original Apple cables) from the computer, when I try to replug in the MiniDisplay Port cable - the Cinema Display does not activate. I must try several unplug-replug ins to get the Display to light up. Usually takes about 10 attempted unpluggings and replug attempts for the display to come to life.
An SMC reset - has not effect.
I am now on my second Cinema Display - My first display was replaced at the Genius bar - they said it had a defective "logic board". The second display - operated normally for about 6 months, but over the past month has been exhibiting these same problems. I still have a bit of time before the one year anniversay for the Display so the warranty is still valid. Given that this is the same issue that happened with the first display - I guess I will need to buy the extended warranty. Don't like the idea of having to pay to have this problem fixed on a regular basis.

  • Cinema display resolution oddity

My Cinema display is set at 1680 X 1050, and normally works as it should.
However, when waking from sleep, the desktop background will shrink at
the bottom and right, to show a gray background.
Changing the resolution manually from and back to 1680 X 1050 fixes
    this.
Hardly a major problem. Is this unique to my machine / display?
    harv

You need to switch from Mirrored to Extended Desktop mode in the Displays pane of System Preferences. In Mirrored mode, the external display is always set to the same resolution as the built-in display. In Extended Desktop mode, the resolutions of the two displays are set independently.
