Extending 30 inch ACD to 12 feet

I need to extend the video cable length of my 30 inch ADC to 12 feet. I know Gefen sells a DVI DL Booster for $250 which will work but does anyone know of something less expensive OR if the following will work...
I have an Apple DVI to ADC Display Adapter that I have used for the original 20 inch display with ADC. It has a DVI that plugs into the video card, a 6 foot long cable and an ADC connector out. If I were to get an inexpensive ADC to DVI adaptor like the ADC to DVI Adaptor that Gefen sells then I could make the physical connection from my computer to the 30 inch ACD. I'd end up with a DVI to DVI powered extended cable.
Now, will this work with the 30 inch ACD? Why or why not? Has anyone tried this?

Pretty sure that won't work - I believe the DVI/ADC converters are single-link only, and you'd only be able to get 1280x800 resolution.

  • Single 23-inch ACD or Dual 20-inch ACD's?

I will be purchasing a Mac Pro to increase my CAD and Photo editing capabilities....Should I go for a larger 23-inch or go for two little guys? My theory with the two 20-inch ACD's was that I can edit and view on the main screen and have the CAD render on the other screen. One bigger 23-inch would be nicer for normal work and CAD with the extra real estate and quality.   Any Ideas?

This is an iMac forum, if you considering a Mac Pro please post on the Mac Pro forum! Personally if I were considering a Mac Pro I'd only consider the 27" Apple Display! Look at Apple's online store or visit your local Apple Store and see one in the flesh and you will see why it's recommended.

  • 30-inch ACD and iMac won't go?

I have a 30-inch ACD which I have run for a couple of years from a G4 Powerbook. Very good, no problems. Now I want to semi-retire the Powerbook (keep it for the road and home use rather than office). I was thinking the iMacs look to have the power I need for the office, plus they would work as a second screen, with the 30-inch as the main screen. I do print and web graphics but very little video so I don't really need a Mac Pro.
But today I went into my local Apple reseller and was told the iMacs won't drive a 30" ACD as a second screen. They did a poor job of explaining why that is, when the iMacs have 256Mb graphics against my PB's 128Mb. Is it this to do with the dual link thingy, and if so is there a way round it? (you'll have realised that like my local reseller, I don't really know what I'm talking about here). Hoping for one-eyed person to lead me out of here...

The 30" display needs dual-link DVI to run at full resolution. The only current Macs with dual-link DVI are the MacBook Pro and the Mac Pro. There is no way to add dual-link DVI to other models.

  • Snow Leopard and Apple 20 inch ACD Problem

Installed SL using the defaults on one of my White MacBooks - no problems, except its not any quicker.
As everything seemed ok, decided to intstall SL on my Mac Pro with a 20 inch ACD. Part way through the install the display started flashing between blue screen and installed progress screen.
Install finished OK, and rebooted. The screen just now switched between all light blue and showing the desktop. If I use a Macbook and screen share, all is OK with the desktop. I have tried changing the screen settings using screen share and not had any luck getting the ACD to work.
    Anyone any ideas?
I assume it is still the ongoing problem of the screen drivers Apple screwed up with the last "update" to Leopard that was never fixed. I had thought they might have sorted it for SL
    SPB

I had a very similar problem.
On my MacBook Pro, half way through the screen went black, and looked as if the brightness was turned all the way down. I held a flashlight to the back of my screen and logged in, and the brightness returned to the normal level.
On my Mac Pro, I have 6 monitors with 3 dual head cards, factory installed. One of the monitors, is black. Again it looks like the brightness is turned all the way down. There is no way for me to change the brightness level in the System Preferences.
After talking to Apple Support for 45 minutes and trying different things, they recommended that I reinstall Snow Leopard. I am in the process now.

  • 27 inch ACD for an iMac i7 27 inch

I've got an iMac i7 27 inch at home, and about to order a 27 inch Cinema Display to connect to my iMac. Any experiences with this? I haven't been able to see them together, and I am wondering if the height of the screen fit the iMac? I would obviously want the two displays aligned properly. My concern is that the ACD is slightly lower, which would be quite bad planning if that's the case. I haven't been able to find any photos of this setup.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks guys, appreciate it.

see my post i'm trying to get a third display....but second monitor works great....the only downside is that you can only choose 1 output for the speaker. either the imac or the display...but i have my setup hooked to some bose speakers so it doesnt matter but its more like "if i wanted to do it i can factor".

  • I'm having issues with my Time Capsule Generation 3. The wifi range no longer extends past 30 or so feet and it happened very suddenly. Any ideas?

My Time Capsule Gen 3 which I have had for around 5 years and had been working like a champ for that time suddenly won't extend the wifi range past 25 to 30 feet. It happened quite suddenly and is wreaking havoc in the house. Any ideas on what the problem could be and any thoughts on quick and affordable solutions?

5 years is well and truly past the lifespan of modern domestic electronics that does 24/7 operation.
    SImply replace it.
You can get a Gen5 AE second hand dirt cheap now.. around $50. and they have much better wireless than earlier gen TC.
Otherwise just get another new TC.

  • Dancing pixels in large black areas of my new 30 inch ACD

I posted this on a thread in the 2004 forum, and then thought to post it here since I just bought my 30 inch LCD new from the Apple Store yesterday.
I have a dancing pixel / pixel static problem, which happens whenever there are large black spaces on the screen, such as the black computer name screen saver, or the black screen where you enter your password to get back into your account from secure sleep. The dancing pixel static also appears in Terminal windows that are set to have a solid black blackground.
To deal with this problem, I just decided to set my Terminal and gvim backgrounds to dark grey. This seems to be a tolerable solution. I also took all the firewire and USB cables out from the back of the display, which was proposed by Apple support as a fix to this sort problem last year, as someone reported in the forum.
I still have to deal with the dancing pixel static in the short interval between the time I activate any screensaver with a hot corner, and the appearance of the same. And the static is all over the place when I try to get out of the screen saver and have to give me password.
I think I can live with that as long as the problem doesn't get worse... Anyone have a similar experience?
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

OK I went to the Apple Store today and they let me trade it in for a new 30 inch LCD. This one is definitely better. There is some pixel static still in large black areas. But much, much less. I hardly notice it, though I can if I look for it. But overall I'm very happy with it now. I love the screen. 30 inches really makes a huge difference.
I wonder though what's the deal with large black areas that causes this to happen on the LCDs.

  • What graphics card or cards Mac Pro and Dual 30 inch ACD's?

I am hoping that you can all help with a few questions regarding running two 30 inch displays in a new Mac Pro and using Final Cut Pro, Motion, and After Effects.
My issue is which card(s) to order... Two NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512MB or the ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB.
Can FCP work off of two different Graphics Cards? I would hook one display to each NVIDIA card via the Dual Link DVI port.
Or with the ATI, I would hook one monitor to the Dual Link DVI and one to the Mini Display Port with the adapter.
The ATI is obviously a more powerful card individually; but, two NVIDIA cards would allow for each monitor its own "lane," which seems like it would be an advantage.
Any advice would be great. I am primarily an FCP user and probably hit After Effects for 25% of my work.
Thanks in advance for any advice!

Neither Motion or Color support dual graphics cards.
FCP used to have issues but they have been addressed in v7 (reportedly).
The 4870 is the better card by far but don't know if it will support 2 30" monitors. In any case, you are spreading the VRAM over a lot of pixels. You'd probably have better response driving 2 24" monitors.

fwiw - I don't see the benefit of gigantic monitors. They take up an enormous amount of desktop space, draw a small city's worth of power and don't offer that many more pixels.

  • APPLE 30 inch ACD and XBOX 360

Hi, I haven't yet bought the Xbox 360, but wonder if anyone could tell me if its possible to adapt my 30 inch screen to an Xbox 360? Is there, or will there be a special adaptor or something, or will it just fit?
    Thanx in advance
    Pete

Osharu, I wondered if you managed to get your Apple monitor to work with your Xbox 360?
I have tried numerous things like buying gender changers and cables and nothing will work with the 30inch, it just will not comply. It seems to me its just not able to convert the appropriate signals. I even phoned Apple, they were useless and I also phoned Xbox people and they were useless too.
    I bought this:
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=9701799431&rd=1&sspagename= STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1
    and this:
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=9701505659&rd=1&sspagename= STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1
    and this:
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=9701507959&rd=1&sspagename= STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1
    and of course this:
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8269589300&rd=1&sspagename= STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1
Nothing gets the 30inch running with the 360.
Now I'm told there are different DVI connectors with different pins, maybe I've overlooked things.
Looks like I may have to buy a high Definition telly when I can afford one.
    Regards
    Pete

  • Set geometry on 30 inch ACD?

There is no Geometry tab in the Display preferences for my 30 inch Apple Cinema Display. Is there any other way to adjust the geometry? Specifically, I have an old video game I'd like to play in Leopard, but the screen size options in the game don't let me go beyond 1024 x 768. (There is a 1280 x 1024 listing in the game, but it's inaccessible.) And in 1024 x 768 resolution the game only fills a third of the screen. In Tiger, the same game and setting filled the whole screen, with the understandable loss of resolution. Any ideas?

I tried your idea, but the game seems to have an override of its own -- no difference in game display size. And now I guess I don't understand how Displays works. If I set it to 1280 x 800 then the whole screen if filled with a much lower resolution. But if I set it to 1280 x 960, only part of the screen is filled (apparently 1280 x 960 pixels centered with a black border) and the resolution is very high -- as good as when Display is set to 2560 x 1600. (This is independent of the game.) Seems rather arbitrary.
I'm also still interested in options for setting the geometry on my display. Are there any 3rd party apps or ways to set it that apparently I don't know about?

  • HELP-My 23 inch ACD will no longer turn on.

Have tried unplugging the monitor, turning computer off and on - nothing seems to work. Monitor was occasionally going blank then when I unplugged and plugged back into the transformer it would come back on. It seems to happen when the computer goes to sleep. Now the screen is blank and will not come back on.
    macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

Apple does not seem to reply on these boards if the solution may involve hardware repairs or replacement. The boards are officially user-to-user.
With regards to this problem, you should try the display with a different power supply unit (of the same wattage). If you do not have one of these, you should take the display to an Apple store and have it tested with one of theirs.

  • Using different resolutions on ACD 20 and 30 inch monitors

I have a Mac Pro with dual monitors. One is the 30 inch ACD and the other is the 20 inch ACD. They are being run off an ATi 1900XT for the 30 and the Nvidia 7300 for the 20. I really want to put the desktop on the 20 inch monitor and run my games on the 30. When I set it up this way the resolution for the games is limited to what the resolution is set to on the 20. Is there a way to do this or is it just a limitation of the OS? Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    J.C.

If mirroring is off, there is nothing in OSX limiting the resolution on the 30" display. The problem must be in the game. If you only have two displays, try removing the 7300, and put both displays on the 1900.

  • Powerbook G4 to connect to the ACD 20 inch,??

I have just purchased the 20 inch acd,, to go on the powerbood g4,, it has the dvi plug ont he right side (the long plug recpetor witha bout 25 little holes). My question is, there are so many dvi adaptors, which one specifically do i need to purchase to get this to work,,,
    thanks in advance,
    Kim kaiser

If it is a new 20" display (metal case, power module) it will have a DVI plug, and no adapter is needed. If it is the old model (plastic case, no power plug, ADC rounded ends with clips), you will need a DVI to ADC adapter.
