Extending a graphic across artboards

CS4. I am primarily an illustrator and logo designer. I don't do booklets very often.
I have a four-page, full bleed promotional piece to design, an outer spread (front and back cover) and an inner spread (pages 2 and 3). The inner spread will have artwork that spans left to right, across the fold. Due to printing requirements and the printer's imposition preferences, each artboard represents a page, not a spread. In other words, I have artboards for front cover, page 2, page 3 and back cover, and I'll deliver four press-ready PDF pages to the printer for his shop to assemble.
How do I set up the artboards and the artwork to cross the fold on the inner spread? Do I abut the artboards (allowing the opposing bleed guides to overlap? Do I place the artwork on page 2 and let it overlap page 3 or do I duplicate the artwork on pages two and three?
It's not clear how this should and will work if I'm submitting separate pages. If I place the artwork on artboard 2, then produce the four separate PDF pages, won't page 3 be blank? (I'm sure this is easy, I'm just inexperienced with it.)
Thanks.

Thanks again, Scott. As you probably have deduced, the nature of my work keeps me in Photoshop and Illustrator pretty exclusively. I think I've done maybe 10 jobs in InDesign and its page layout ancestors in 20 years. Even before Illustrator, I'd do the occasional multi-page job that came my way with FreeHand's extremely flexible multiple pages, even though I had PageMaker on my machines. So, like all of us, I gravitate to what's familiar.
I appreciate your helping me out on this. Good, practical, easy to follow advice, as always.
Shunith, nothing weird in the slightest. It's not that this printer "can't" handle artist-generated spreads. They can and they have. It's that they have some pretty impressive, modern equipment whose software does all imposing with precision and reliability. So they prefer single pages from the artist. Because they're so incredibly and consistently good, I give them exactly what they want. Thanks to Scott, I can on this job too.

  • Extending my desktop across 2 (DVI) displays from 15" MacBook Pro Retina

    Hi. I bought a new 15" MacBook Pro Retina a few days ago and am trying to connect 2 Dell displays with a view to extending my desktop across them both. At the Apple shop I was told I simply needed to buy 2 Thunderbolt to DVI converters (my 2 displays both have DVI out) and hook them up... Not true. If I try this my desktop only extended across 1 display. The other display isn't even picked up by my MacBook Pro.
    So does anyone out there know how I connect 2 DVI displays to my MacBook Pro without buying a Matrox Dual Link? If I bought an HDMI to DVI converter cable and connected one display via the HDMI port, and the other display via the thunderbolt port, would this work?

    May not be an upgrade issue ..
    You have a fast processor. and 8GB of RAM is more than sufficient.  (The processor cannot be replaced)
    Click your Apple menu  top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage
    Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space. Less can slow the system down.
    If your Mac seems to running slower, try the suggestions here > Mac troubleshooting: What to do when your computer is too slow | Macworld
    If you have not done so, especially with school files stored on the hard drive, make sure to back up your important data on a timely basis.  Help here >  Mac Basics: Time Machine
    Not a good idea to post the serial number of your Mac on the net. I have asked the moderators to edit that information for you. It has nothing to do with upgrading.

  • Extending video layers across the time line simultaneously

    Any one Know how to extend video layers across the time line simultaneously?
    I have been working on a Video for a few days and have all the layers I need to make my video but when I came to start creting the clip on the timeline there was no promt asking me how long I want the clip to be. I want to extend all the layers on the clip to 21:10 seconds similtaniously. Ther is about 600 layers in numorous groups and I dont want to have to extend each layer across the time line to 21:10 seconds individualy?
    can any one help?

    it is currently lacking the ability to adjust the length using multiple layers at once. However that said, if you are done animating the layer individualy, you can select all layer (or a partial) and convert them to a smart object. That smart object can then be extended in time. Playing in photoshop maybe slower due to the smart object.

  • Third party tools to extend Webi graphic capabilities

    All,
    Is any one aware or uses any good third party plug-ins to extend webi charts/graphic capabilities?
    We are looking for a plug-in that will help us extend webi charting or in general report formatting capabilities.
    Thank you in advance for your help.

    Webi currently has limited charting options. For e.g: You cannot have a stacked vertical chart with a line chart.
    I did come across

    i haven't got a chance to check it out. I am basically looking for more such third-party options.

  • Extending header/footer across entire page

    I was wondering how to extend the header and footer of a web page so that it will always extend all the way across the width of the page no matter what the size of the screen is. I have heard removing the padding works but I am not sure how to do so.

    For best results, use pen and paper to rough sketch out the layout you want. Then choose an appropriate pre-built CSS layout or grid/framework to build your own.
    Example of a liquid header and footer layout.

  • Span Graphics across THREADED text frames

    Hello there,
    I am working at a 60 page document that includes plenty of footnotes, graphics and tables.
    I have a 2 column layout. I need the graphics and the tables to span across the 2 columns.
    I need the footnotes on each page to span across 2 columns.
    Now.
    Indesign puts the footnotes into their own separate column. I found a script that will correct this but will only work if the 2 columns are not part of the same text field.
    In other words, to have a 2 column layout I would need 2 threaded text fields onto 1 page, instead of 1 single text field with 2 columns.
    The problem is that once I have 2 different text frames, all the graphics and table will not span across the columns.
    I need a fix!
    Either a new way of dealing with footnotes spanning across columns, or a way of having tables and graphs spanning across threaded frames.
    Thanks!
    Federico

    There is no easy way to span footnotes across several columns.
    I had to do it several times in the last month and I did following:
    Work consequent with paragraph, character and object styles.
    Create an Object Style for your 2 column text.
    Finish your article with your normal footnotes.
    Try to find a scipt which converts footnotes to endnotes (and the other way too). There are several for free download available
    Install that script.
    Convert footnotes into endnotes
    Create for the first endnote a flair of the paragraph style which will start in a new frame (not necessary, but makes things much easier).
    Now you have at the end of the story a + which indidcates a text overflow. Click on this.
    Now create a new layer above the text and lock the text and draw a rectangle on the bottom of the page where the first footnote number (now endnote number) is found.
    For this reference text frame create  now (or do it before) an object style which will wrap text away to make place for the "footnotes" and let the text vertically align at the bottom. Apply this style to the "footnote" frames.
    Drag the frame as high as all footnotes of that page are found in this frame.
    Click on the overflow indicator and follow up with the previous steps until the last footnote.
    For graphics and tables spanning accross the columns I don’t anchor them in a multiple column layout out because if the anchor is in the right column, text wrapping will not work properly.

  • Extending div's across the width of the browser

    I wan't to extend some div's across the width of the browser, for eg: background colors. My container has a max width, so its not straightforward. If I remove that constraint, I lose the ability to demonstrate the max width behavior, which I don't want either.

    Yeah, the grid in reflow is really just a visual and snap aid, it doesn't have any implications except for the min/max width in relation to the breakpoints. We use a lot of full width background images which don't really snap to the area outside the grid unless they're set to body, but want full page or at least much wider than half a gutter (via show outer gutter) content images and bgs.
    So it really depends on the min col grid you need and the hard 16 col limit is an issue for a grid that that has a higher common multiple for it's column variations. I.e. a 5 and 3 column design would need 15 for the content and 2 for the outside margin but that's over the limit.
    For simplicity's sake we've moved to mostly 2-4 column designs which we can make work with a max 12+2 cols, but you have to figure out multiples that work out cleanly while maintaining a natural looking relationship of content to margins.
    For that reason, and because of the platform on which we build most projects (NationBuilder) requiring a sidebar,  we've gone heavily to 3,2,1 col layouts which we can break into just six layout cols.
    But another workaround we're using is to flop the grid and gutters so that we have 7 gutters of 12% and 6 cols of 4%. The grid is largely just a visual aid so it doesn't seem to have any implications so far. The issue we were having was that the outside gutters are only half width which doesn't work for our designs which tend to have a lot of common match ups and lineups. In that case you have the larger gutters which have a central snap guide as well which you may be able to repurpose to many more cols if you can come up with a clean grid is a lot of experimentation or a spreadsheet, the only way we were able to calculate all our variables into nice round numbers…
    The simplest fix though is probably a lifting of the arbitrary limit on number of columns. I saw on another thread the devs were willing to consider that, they just needed a solid usecase to do so. A grid that accounts for a design with both 4 and 5 columns in it would require at least 20 cols, and 2 extra on the outside would probably be pretty useful so a 24 col max should allow for almost all contingencies…

  • Extend wi-fi across many acres?

    Is it possible to extend a wi-fi network across many outdoor acres?  Think hundred-acre cattle yards.  I know very little of networking, but thinking power and "repeaters" could possibly do it?  Of course, we don't have power out to all corners of these yards.  Is there now some sort of solar panel with battery that a router could plug into?  And lastly, even if we could get power out to these places, doesn't signal strength (or at least speed) diminish the farther you go from the office?
    I'm just trying to detemine if it's realistic to "wi-fi up" an entire cattle yard, or if it's too difficult/not very realistic (in which case we'd have to write apps to be disconnected and just communicate with the server whenever close to the office).
    Thanks for any info.

    but i always thought all airport devices had to be connected to an existing network via ethernet?
    Now you know that this is not the case.
    Apples advice & the instructions all say you have to connect via ethernet
    Not sure exactly what you are referring to here. For example, this well known popular Apple support article....with specific steps to extend a network wirelessly......has been around for about 5 years in its present form, but it is a revision of another support document that was available long before that.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4145
    Is this something that the newer airport devices now support?
    No, all AirPort devices for the past 8 years or so have supported wireless extension. But, that does not mean that any device will work any other device...... you have to have devices from similar generations to insure compatibility.

  • Suggestions on extending wifi coverage across a street

    Thanks, Ferdinand, I'll look into that!

    We have an office and warehouse across the street from our main building. It is currently connected to our building via an old underground connection that goes out pretty much every time the weather is bad. Running another physical line is not an option at this time.There are currently only 2 users in that building - one that only needs email access and occasional web browsing capability. The other user does not stay at that station and only uses it maybe once or twice a month. That user needs to be able to access our corporate network via our internal Citrix client.Currently the underground line is run into a router that feeds into a switch that distributes to those two systems.Across the street at our main building there is a room with a large window that offers a clear line of sight to the large window of office in question across...

  • Extending VLAN across Data centers

    I hope you can help, I have 2 data centers connected via a L3 10gb (dark fiber) now I have a few more fiber strands available between the 2 data centers; so for Disaster Recovery and server clustering (requiring same subnet) does it make sense to extend certain vlans across using these extra fiber strands or is it best practice to keep the layer 3 separation, thanks in advance!

    Borman
    It does make sense in terms of clustering. Not sure exactly what you mean in terms of disaster recovery, that really depends on your topology/addressing.
    Basically i would route where you can and extend L2 when you have to. Be aware you are extending L2 between data centres and tha brings STP issues. Obvioulsy make sure you only allow the vlans you need on this link and route all else.
    There are other ways to extend a L2 vlan across a L3 link - L2TPv3 springs to mind.

  • Extend Graphics OBJECT

    Hi!
    I need to add functionality to existing Graphics objects, like in:
    interface ABC {
      public void drawString(String,int,int);
      public void m();
    class ABCGr extends Graphics implements ABC {
      public void m() {}
    class Sth extends JPanel {
      public void doSth(ABC d) {}
      public void paintComponent(Graphics g) {
        ABC d = (ABCGr)g;
        doSth(d);
    }(This does not run, of course.)
    The crucial point here is that doSth() is also called with something else than an extended Graphics object (i.e. another ABC).
    Is the only way to achieve this to write a wrapper that contains a reference to the Graphics object and wraps all Graphics methods explicitely? This would be a bit clumsy!
    Any hint to a more elegant (and probably better performing) way would be greatly appreciated!
    Best regards,

    As much as I hate to say it, you really can't extend the graphics object.
    Here's why, basically the graphics object is supposed to be an interface to a canvas so it sit right on top of the thing that you are drawing to, be that the screen, an image in memory or the printer. SO you really can't extend it. You'd have to extend every seperate instance.
    What it sounds like you want to do is provide a bunch of utility functions to the Graphics object. This is probably better done with a class of static functions like this.
    class GraphicsUtil {
    static void doGraphicsFun( Graphics g) {//do stuff
    }I know that it's not the most elegant solution, but the graphics class is an abstract class and you can't really add functionality like that. Think about extending an interface, if you extend an interface, you can't make all the classes that implemented the old interface implment your new functions.
    I wouldn't write a wrapper, this will only slow your code down, static functions are the way to go.

    Hello. I have the HP Pavlilion dv6t-7000 with the NVIDIA GT650M 1GB grpahics card. Now because of my work, i need to extends my graphic card memory. So I want to ask if my laptop is possible to upgrade to GT650M 2GB card.
    My product number is A5F74AV. And my wannary is end on 8/24/2013.
    And this laptop is a gift of my aunt from USA, and I'm living in Viet Nam now. So if yes, can HP Vietnam do the upgrade for me? My aunt's family is very busy so I can't resend my laptop and ask them to return to you.
    Thank you very much!

    Hi:
    The only way to upgrade the video card in your notebook is to replace the entire motherboard which would cost as much as buying a new notebook with better graphics.
    If you had HP do the upgrade, it would probably cost more than buying 2 notebooks with better graphics than yours.
