Extending a home network with two WRT160N routers.

Hey guys,
I have a WRT160N and a WRT160N v2 router. I would like to extend my home network so that I have stronger bandwidth throughout different areas in my house.  Would I have to set one of these routers up as a repeater or maybe even a bridge? If so, how would I go about doing that?
Thanks!

1. If you are referring to Wireless bridging, this router's are NOT capable of that. You need to use separate wireless bridge to connect to the 2nd router;
2. Wired bridging, though is possible. Here's the setup of that one;
3. Instead of a 2nd router, use a wireless access point instead

  • Can I configure a wireless home network with two cable routers (both with separate connections to the same cable company)?  Issue is poor signal strength even with multiple Airport Expresses added to the network.

I have a wireless home network consisting of a time capsule, two airport expresses and a cable modem.  Even with this configuration I get a very weak signal in much of be condo - the walls, etc. are solid concrete. I want to see if I can add another separately connected cable modem and connect one of the existing airport express to it by Ethernet cable.  If so, this would give me two wired hubs and greatly improve signal strength. I do not know if this configuration will in fact work or if I will just wind up with two, separate and unrelateable networks.  Unfortunately, there is no way to run any additional Ethernet cable and I doubt simply adding more Airport Express will help. Thanks.

Try Ethernet over Power adapters.. these are very popular for your kind of environment.. being able to make non-wireless link to another area where you can setup a wireless access point.
Airport Express are not great for wireless power.. if you really have issues with wireless strength in a bad environment apple stuff is not the way to go.
    The comparison chart here.
    http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/lanwan/router-charts/bar/58-2_4-ghz-dn?see=P_F
This is their worst test location you can also see averages.. the latest airport extreme.. is there a long way down.. and that is a much better wireless device than Airport Express.
The Ubiquiti power AP is small cheap and designed for precisely this duty.. useless in an apple wireless network.. you will need to run ethernet or EOP adapters back to the main router.. but if the normal omni directional antennas don't provide enough signal you can get directional ones.. I suspect you can cover your whole apartment with a pair of these and high gain directional antenna.

  • Extending a wireless networking with two AirPort Extremes...

    Hi All,
So I have two AirPort Extremes (both are 4th generation) and I have been using one as a network extender with my DSL and all was working perfectly.  I was getting about 5MB downstream with my DSL, with my iMac hardwired to my extended AirPort.  Yesterday, I switched my service provider to Comcast and, of course, I rebooted all of my devices.
Now, when I use the hardwired iMac connection with my extended AirPort, I get very low throughput - like 2 MB downstream.  If I wirelessly connect to the AirPort that is wired to the Comcast modem, I get crazy high speeds - like 60MB downstream.  (I'm using http://speedtest.net/ to judge these speeds...)
What the heck is going on???
    Here's some more info:
Both Extremes are on the latest firmware, 7.6
The extended Extreme is showing that the upstream Extreme is wirelessly connected, with a Signal of -62, Noise of -68, rate of 144, Type Wireless (of course).
I've tried allowing wireless clients on the extended Extreme and not, both ways have the same behavior.
Lastly, and I don't think it matters, but my iMac has the latest version of Lion installed, 10.7.2.
    Anyone have any suggestions???
    - Thanx!
    - Jon

    Hi Again,
I'm pretty sure that this issue is going to be pushed farther and farther down in the discussion board.
I would really like to get it solved.  Would any AirPort gurus out there like to make 10 bucks?  I'm happy to PayPal you if you solve my issue...  If not, I remember that there was a website where you could submit an issue and make an offer of payment for solving it.  Anyone know what that is?

  • Home networking with two different Operational Systems

I have Internet Fios and am using now two computers wirelessly. One is PC and the other one is Mac. If I create a network would it stop me from losing my connection? If so, how to? At Verizon website, under network, the solutions refer only to Windows OS. I appreciate any help,
    Sergio

What are you trying to accomplish.  When you connect your computer to the router whether its wired or wireless you are on a network.  What do you mean "create a network".
I have all sorts of devices on my network (PCs, smart phones, TVs, Blue Ray Players, Apple Devices etc.) and all access the internet or other devices on my network without issue.

  • How do I hook up a G3 iBook to my home network with only Windows machines?

I'm completely ignorant of Apple technology but pretty good for a novice with Windows PC's. To help a family member with an iBook (Mac OS 10.3.9) back up a gazillion family photos (at least 3.2GB in the iPhoto Library), we want to connect his iBook to my home network with two Windows machines (one of which is connected via UBS to an external drive for backup). But before I just connect his iBook to an Ethernet port on my Westell modem+router, what should I know?
I need to know all the basics and all the steps, in as detailed a manner as you can stand to tell me.
And when it all looks good, what are the steps to copy the iPhoto Library to a designated spot on one of the Windows machines (or that external hard drive)?
By the way, this is the iBook:
    Machine Model: iBook
    CPU Type: PowerPC 750 (2.3)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 800 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 640 MB
    Bus Speed: 100 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.6.4f1
    System Version: Mac OS X 10.3.9 (7W98)
    Kernel Version: Darwin 7.9.0
    Many thanks!

    Hello,
When I got my first mac this ( http://macs.about.com/cs/tipstutorials/a/xposxsharing.htm ) article helped me enormously.
It's very easy to write to the disc once you've set up the network.
On the mac locate the iPhoto library (normally open finder and click on pictures).
Open another finder window and locate the windows PC on your network, then mount the folder to which you will back up the iPhoto library.
Drag the iPhoto library to this folder.
    Wait.
    Wait some more.
When the copy is complete check the images can be accessed from the PC.
Unmount the folder from the mac by dragging it to the trash.
    Congratulations.
Beware though, if you're like me you'll find this apple thing adicitve!!!

  • How can I extend my wireless network with the Time Capsule?

I recently bought a Time Capsule and set it up, backed up all my data, etc. It is currently plugged in to my AT&T Uverse wireless router via a LAN CAT5e cable. I am wondering if it is possible to wirelessly extend my preexisting network with the Time Capsule so I can move it somewhere else in my house where it can still pick up the signal but extend it. And if possible, how so? Or does it ALWAYS have to be wired'connected to my router for the internet to work?
    Thanks in advance.

I am wondering if it is possible to wirelessly extend my preexisting network with the Time Capsule so I can move it somewhere else in my house where it can still pick up the signal but extend it.
Sorry but no.  Extending using only wireless would require that the Time Capsule connect to another Apple router that is producing the wireless network.
Another way of saying the same thing is that you must have two Apple routers to be able to extend the signal wirelessly.

  • Extend Time Capsule network with WRT54GL?

I have set up a home network with Time Capsule as the primary router. I would like to use my WRT54GL to connect to the network via ethernet and extend it for wireless access at the opposite end of my house. Is this cascading?  I connected the ethernet cable to one of the ethernet ports on the Time Capsule and the Internet port on the WRT54GL.  I changed the Linksys router settings to disable the DHCP server, I named the network the same as the Time Capsule and duplicated security mode and password. I can connect with my laptop, and it initially connects with full internet access, but after about 10 seconds, I can see Airport searching for a network. It reconnects, but for about 45 seconds I have no internet access and then access returns and works fine. On my iPad, however, although it shows I am connected to the network, there is no signal indicator at the top of the screen, and all connectivity seems to be through 3G -- not the network. I assume there is a setting on the Linksys that needs changing, but I can't figure out what it is.

yes, it is cascading. but you need to do it right. when you connect the time capsule to the WRT54GL, you should put one end of the ethernet cable to the TC and the other end to a regular (numbered) port on the WRT54GL, not the Internet port. that is important. disabling the DHCP on the Linksys is correct, as you already have DHCP on the TC, but you'll need to set the WRT54GL to the same IP range as your TC. since your TC uses 10.0.1.1 as its default IP, you may set your WRT54GL to 10.0.1.99 (for example) so that it's on the same IP range. hope this helps.

  • Can I extend my wireless network with my old Airport?

Can I extend my wireless network with my old Airport? I have the airport extreme 802.11n & my old Airport (translucent white) base station. Can I mix the two to expand my range?

No problem; ask as many questions as you need to.
How do I reconfigure the Snow as a bridge to allow the AEBSn to continue to provide both NAT & DHCP services for the entire network?
I don't have a Snow to verify this, but it should be similar to the later base stations when using the AirPort Admin Utility.
To set up the Snow base station as a bridge, either connect to the Snow's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the Snow, and then, using the AirPort Admin Utility (located in the \Applications\Utilities folder), make these settings:
    Network tab
    o Distribute IP addresses (unchecked)
    o Apply the new setting.

How do I use Home Sharing with two different apple accounts?

    Morning Saintine,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Home Sharing enables you to stream or transfer music, movies, TV shows, apps, and more among up to five authorized computers in your household. To do so, you will need to Turn on Home Sharing on each computer using the same Apple ID.

  • I'm trying to extend my wifi network with time capsule but it can't find the existing wifi network

I'm trying to extend my wifi network with time capsule but it can't find the existing BT wifi network even though it is there with a good signal strength. The Time Capsule is connected to a Netgear router via ethernet.

You will need to start over on the setup of the Time Capsule as follows:
Disconnect any Ethernet cables that might be connected to the Time Capsule, but leave it powered on
Hold in the reset button on the back of the Time Capsule for 8-10 seconds and release. The reset button is located next to the AC power socket.
Allow a full minute for the Time Capsule to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
Connect the Ethernet cable from a LAN <--> port on the Netgear to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule.  The Ethernet cable must remain connected at all times.
Click the WiFi icon at the top of the Mac's screen
Look for a setting of New AirPort Base Station
    Click on Time Capsule
The example below shows an AirPort Express. You will see Time Capsule on your screen.
That will get the setup wizard going. It will take a minute to analyze the settings, then display a screen that looks like this, except you will see a picture of the Time Capsule
Network Name..........Type in the exact name that the Netgear wireless is using
Base Station.............Type in a name that you want to call the Time Capsule.  Use something short and simple. Mine is TC, for example
Password..................Type in the exact password that the Netgear wireless requires
    Verify.........................Verify the Password again
    Click Next
The setup wizard will configure everything for you automatically.  When you see the message of Setup Complete, click Done.
That's it.  Now you have one big "extended" network.  Technically, this is called a "roaming" network.

  • HT3819 Is it possible to share a printer (attached to a Windows-7 PC) on my home network, with an iPad, iPhone or a Mac?

Is it possible to share a printer (attached to a Windows-7 PC) on my home network, with an iPad, iPhone or a Mac?

Possibly. You'd need to see if your printer has any programs you can put on that attached computer to allow it to be a print server.
I'd start with your printer manufacturer first. See if they offer anything. for your model. If not, then you can look for any printer apps or programs.

  • How to hook up a G3 iBook to a home network with only Windows machines?

Before I attach an iBook (Mac OS 10.3.9) to a home network with only Windows machines, what should I know? (I intend to connect the iBook to an Ethernet socket on my Westell modem+router.) My reason for doing this is to back up a million family photos in the iBook's iPhoto Library.

Please give me as much detail as you can stand to write, because I know nothing about Apples. It's for my dear old Dad, who has no other way to back up priceless photos.
For example, when things are working well and the iBook "sees" the Windows machines, how do I copy the iPhoto Library?
